PetroSA regards BBBEE as a deliberate socio-economic process or intervention strategy designed to redress the imbalances of the past and to facilitate the participation of black people in the economy. The drive for societal and industry transformation is not only an attempt to redress historical imbalances, but is in recognition of the fact that promoting transformation in the workplace will ultimately improve organisational performance.

Our main focus is on five of the seven BBBEE elements as per the BBBEE Code of Good Practise, namely:1. Employment Equity2. Skills Development3. Preferential Procurement4. Enterprise Development5. Socio-Economic Development

The CSI programme focuses on:• Education • Community Development• Environment and Sustainable Development • HealthPetroSA’s CSI programme supports the overeaching objectives of creating a better life for all South Africans. To this end PetroSA has invested more than R210 million on developmental projects.

EDUCATION: PetroSA recognises the value and importance of education, as such the company spends a substantial portion of its CSI funds supporting programmes which are aligned to education.

HEALTH: PetroSA’s contributions in the health sector are primarily aimed at addressing the critical challenges of HIV/Aids by concentrating on areas of deficiency in healthcare services. These contributions are meant to benefit areas and communities in the disadvantaged areas.

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT: In this area, preference is given to integrated community initiatives that target the needs of previously disadvantaged. These may include poverty alleviation, Adult Basic Education and Training, job creation and disaster relief.

ENVIRONMENT: PetroSA is committed to protecting the environment, and ensuring that it is kept as prestine as possible. Support in this area is directed towards conservation projects, including sustainable clean-up projects and subsistence agricultural initiatives.

The forward-thinking approach of Mercedes-Benz South Africa (MBSA) is most evident in the fact that it has led, and continues to set the benchmark, in the local automotive industry at many transformation levels. As a group it is rated as a Level 4 BBBEE contributor, with one subsidiary, Daimler Fleet Management already at Level 2 and likely to reach Level 1 this year.

The group’s strength lies in the pillars of Enterprise Development, Skills Development, Preferential Procurement and Corporate Social Investment. Interestingly, these are the self-same pillars that contribute most to long-term broad empowerment.

“The Level 4 BBBEE achievement of the Mercedes-Benz group in SA is a clear sign that MBSA does not merely pay lip service to the concept of transformation. We focus on transformation because we believe in it. It is the only way to

ensure a sustainable future,” says Dr Martin Zimmermann, President and CEO of MBSA.

“Our philosophy is that what benefits the country, benefits us all,” says Zimmermann. “Ours has been a demanding, but worthwhile journey of change and transformation. MBSA has not only witnessed, but been an active participant in the important socio-political shift in this country,” says Zimmermann.

“MBSA’s corporate vision is not confined to our shareholders, our employees or our industry. We are fully aware that we can only continue to operate successfully in the midst of healthy, stable and prosperous societies. We are committed to actively contributing to those industrial, commercial and societal environments in which we operate. It is about fulfilling our business aims in such a way that we balance our rights with our obligations.”

The BEE Certification Company is a verification company conducting quality BEE verifications for entities across the board.

The company is authorised to issue BEE certificates to EME’s, QSE’s and Generics, in terms of the “Codes Of Good Practice” as detailed by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI). Our verification process is designed to provide a simple and rapid service to any size client.

More than 75 % of companies in the private sector are not Broad Base Black Economic Empowerment compliant, according to a study by DTI (according to a baseline study conducted in 2008/2009). This is a missed opportunity for the transformation of the nation, as well as for businesses in their effort to thrive by mirroring the society at large.

BEEC plays a key role in business’ compliance with the Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment and our government’s plan for more equitable future.

It should play a key role in your company’s future too.

As leaders in B-BBEE, we know how to meet aggressive timetables and bring complex restructuring to a seamless close.

We pride ourselves in being able to issue quality B-BBEE certificates that all parties can rely on with confidence thus enabling South Africa to become a more equitable society.

Our company has verified companies with a combined turnover of +/-R30 billion in various sectors including finance, business services, retail, motor trade, repair services, mining, construction, healthcare, transport, IT and manufacturing.

We use the Broad-based Black Economic Empowerment Codes of Good Practice and Sector Codes, the Verification Manual and the requirements as stated in the South African National Accreditation System (SANAS) to conduct our verifications. We conduct onsite visits to ensure information provided in documentation is accurate.

The verification process is documented in the Verification Agreement, and this process will be followed up with a visit by a Verification Analyst. We use all documentary evidence acquired and notes from the onsite visit to determine the score and reach an opinion on the B-BBEE status of the measured enterprise.

The management team of B-BBEE Certification collectively possess ±80 years of experience in auditing, banking, international trade, finance, law, human resources, project management and strategic consulting.

It’s BEEC’s own entrepreneurship, unleashed to help you make the most of your opportunities.

There is no quick and magical solution to being B-BBEE certified. What you need is a partner such as BEEC that is steeped in common sense and experienced enough to accomplish the goal.

The Experts Simplify the BEE Process

Becoming BEE compliant can certainly look quite daunting at the outset as there are various misconceptions surrounding Black Economic Empowerment. Many believe that it is endless hours of administration and the jargon is often misinterpreted.

The industry experts have some general guidelines.

The first step to becoming BEE compliant is EDUCATION. When you are armed with the correct information, you are equipped to make the best business decisions as well as are able to give your clients the best advice.

A BEE verified consultant can assist your business in compiling a strategy and putting targets in place. This process will help you identify the practices you already have in place as well as outline areas that you can focus on to increase your BEE rating.

The next step is to produce a BEE scorecard and track exactly which practices are already in place and which areas you need to concentrate on. The scorecard is a great starting point and helps you have a clear picture of where your business stands in the rating process. The BEE consultant can provide better insight and clarify any grey areas that may be highlighted.

Maintain your competitive edge with a higher BEE rating

The corporate industry has always been and is becoming increasingly complicated.

For a sustainable and successful enterprise, corporate governance is essential.

Black Economic Empowerment was launched by the South African government to redress the inequalities of Apartheid by giving previously disadvantaged groups economic opportunities that were denied to them in the past.

It includes measures such as employment equity, skills development, ownership, management as well as socio-economic development and procurement.

South Africa is the last emerging market and is becoming more and more attractive to foreign investors. It makes sense for organisations to comply with these regulations and look at strategic ways to increase their BEE ratings. Whether it is public enterprises seeking new business locally or internationally, organisations prefer to do business with BBBEE compliant enterprises. This is most often the prerequisite to ‘sealing the deal’.

Organisations that fail to comply with these practices are losing their competitive edge thus giving away the advantage to their competitors.

The FM Essentials BEE Business guide gives you a comprehensive range of carefully selected services and products to assist you in achieving your BEE status and in increasing your rating.

Corporate Social Investment (CSI)

Our CSI initiatives are aimed at achieving and sustaining positive social development of the communities we operate in. Through various community interventions, our effective community re-investment further reinforces our values and help us achieve our business objectives.

In South Africa, to ensure meaningful delivery against the social requirements of the dti codes we focus our CSI spending on three areas; education, enterprise development and health and wellness. As education plays a critical role in the future sustainability and economic upliftment of South Africa, a large portion of our spend is focused in this area.

Standard Bank Group (SBG) recognises that the private sector must develop innovative solutions to meet development challenges particularly in emerging markets. We partner with organisations that lead global efforts to fight poverty, HIV/Aids, TB and malaria and provide solutions to support agriculture and infrastructure development.

Page 37: Bee Business 2011 | 2012

We are working to make financing available to smallholder farmers, investing in infrastructure across Africa and other emerging markets and support healthcare development through capacity building initiatives.

In addition, financial institutions play a central role in socioeconomic development by providing finance to customers through lending which enhances individual welfare and drives growth in the broader economy. Other activities impacting social development include an emphasis on small and medium enterprises (SME’s), as well as special procurement policies.

Increasingly, African countries are undertaking economic transformation processes including indigenisation, to improve the benefits to local people of their national economies. Standard Bank monitors these initiatives for any material risks which they may present. In South Africa this is articulated through the Broad-based Black Economic Empowerment Act.

The most fundamental contribution Standard Bank Group (SBG) makes to the economies in which we operate is through delivering a robust business supported by sustainable revenues. This allows us to pay dividends to our shareholders, salaries to our employees and tax to governments, as well as create value through the supply chain and investments in community projects. The total wealth created by the group in 2010 was R44,4 billion, an increase of 8,8% from 2009.

Standard Bank has been ranked as the top empowerment company in South Africa by Empowerdex, one of the country’s leading empowerment verification agencies. We achieved an overall BEE rating of 92.83 per cent.

VA DISTRIBUTORS cc, a 100% black empowerment company, opened its doors on 1 October, 2003. We have been in business supplying protective wear for ten years prior to establishing VA Distributors cc.

During this time we found that the quality of overalls were inferior or came at a high cost to customers. We also wanted to get more BEE companies involved in manufacturing good quality branded overalls at a fair price. We approached the best BEE CMT factories to start manufacturing overalls for us, which created ± 60 jobs in the rural areas of KZN.

VA DISTRIBUTORS cc has now cut out the middleman, created more jobs, improved the quality of overalls and created huge savings to our customers. We also supply additional safety and cleaning products for various industries and do in-house branding on clothing for various client’s companies.

We are a Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment company BBBEE and are a level 4 contributor (65 to 75 points – 100% compliant).

SEW Eurodrive offers customised power packs for mining applications

South Africa: SEW Eurodrive recently supplied power packs for the Thorncliffe Chrome mine in the Steelpoort area. This was

the beginning of a long term relationship which has since seen additional enquiries for these units.

These industrial sized geared reducers were customised specifically for the customer to include high and low speed couplings which were assembled on a base plate. It is used to drive strike conveyors in underground mining.

Of particular interest to Thorncliffe Mine was the energy efficiency of the units as well as the option of condition monitoring. “It makes sense to look into the total cost of ownership when

purchasing a unit” comments Lloyd Murenzvi Mine Manager, Xstrata Thorncliffe Mine. “The unit had to be energy efficient and self sustaining. Condition monitoring is invaluable in making sure a problem is solved before it results in a unit seizing.”

THE SOLUTION:

The SEW Eurodrive MC Series of industrial gears, was fitted with high speed MagnaDrive couplings. These coupling have many advantages such as energy efficiency, reliability, disconnected soft-start, low maintenance, reduced vibration and precise process control. The particular MagnaDrive coupling was selected based on the kilowatt of the motor and the fact that it had to be used in a high starting torque. Furthermore the power pack made allowance for a premium efficiency motor which was foot mounted.

As a base plate was required, it was understood that rigid flange couplings would need to be utilized. Rigid flange couplings are a matched pair of flanges which allows fully rigid driving of the shaft connection. Each flange was fastened to its respective shaft by means of a locking element with appropriate bore size. This coupling allows the entire drive package to be connected directly to the driven shaft. The base plate is secured to the group by means of a torque arm bracket.

The base plate was designed and manufactured with additional high and low speed coupling guards to safeguard components as well as any persons working in the direct vicinity.

Xstrata was also interested in monitoring the performance and condition of the geared reducers. To this end the units were fitted with a diagnostic unit which offers drive diagnosis using vibration analysis for preventative maintenance.

The units were also fitted with temperature sensors and a gear unit oil diagnostics item which uses thermal analysis for preventative maintenance.

The entire assembly was handled by the SEW Eurodrive plant in Nelspruit. “We are very proud to be associated with Xstrata and look forward to growing our market share in the mining industry. We offer solutions for various applications in mining. Together with our projects department and our industrial gears factory in Nelspruit, we have what it takes to come up with long term cost effective solutions for this industry” comments Conrad Pilger, GM Sales and Engineering, SEW Eurodrive.

Generic medicines are so similar to original branded medicines that you’ll find it hard to tell them apart. They contain the identical active ingredient and are manufactured against the same strict standards prescribed by the Medicines Regulatory Authority.

As a world leader in generic medicines and South Africa’s number one generic brand, Aspen is renowned for its quality, effective and affordable medicines. So when it comes to choosing a quality generic, make the choice that most South Africans make – choose an Aspen generic.

Because we understand that every brand is unique, The Alchemist PR does not offer cookie-cutter PR plans and never adopts a one-size-fits-all approach. Instead we prefer to partner with clients in understanding their business objectives so that we are able to design a PR programme aligned to their business and marketing strategy.

Our success lies in our ability to keep our fingers on the pulse of an ever-evolving market and socio-economic climate. And while we appreciate the value of traditional PR, we also understand that sometimes success requires an unorthodox approach.

Our unique brand of PR is offered to clients in the financial services, retail and renewable energy sector, including amongst others, Absa Wealth, State Bank of India, Panasonic, Jockey, Vestas, Soitec and South African Wind Energy Association.

The very nature of agri-processing, which is fundamental to the nature of Tongaat Hulett’s operations, includes land management, a basic building block to the creation of wealth in all societies. The potential benefits (for which one may also read wealth) that can accrue from responsible and effective land management are substantial and come in a number of different forms. It is therefore imperative that partnerships, both active and passive, are forged with stakeholders to ensure that the benefits held in the land are realised and equitably distributed. Any negative impacts are to be appropriately managed or better still, eliminated.

Partnerships, in the Tongaat Hulett sense, start within the company itself, between the operating companies, represented by the sugar, starch and land development entities. The synergies and strengths of the entities are used to deliver the best value possible for their respective stakeholders, some of whom are common to all three entities and others who are specific to a particular area of operation.

A typical example is a partnership between Tongaat Hulett, a Local Authority and a community to best develop an area for job creation purposes. This could entail the conversion of agricultural land to urban development with an optimum mix of land uses.

A consequence thereof would be to stimulate investment that leads to more jobs in the area, raises the local standard of living and activates new economic sectors, thereby creating downstream business opportunities.

Simultaneously, expertise and pride in the immediate environment develops to protect the value being created. Such value in whatever form it may present itself, becomes the capital base off which financial, social and environmental programmes can develop sustainably.

Partnerships are therefore a key to unlocking financial, social and environmental wealth to all who are willing to actively and constructively participate in them. Tongaat Hulett is aspiring to be that partner of choice.

You don’t know what you don’t know; never was there a truer sentence spoken.

Organisations are inundated with vast amounts of data.

However, despite the plethora of the so-called business intelligence and enterprise intelligence technologies currently available, business leaders worldwide still tell us that they frequently lack the information needed to make critical decisions.

Their challenge is the data – how it needs to be identified, acquired, cleansed, managed and interpreted to drive business value.

Technology is not the answer. The results of applying the technology provide the answers.

In the conduct of its various business briefs, Cutting Edge Commerce (CEC) realised that a huge deficit existed in terms of information availability and visibility, as well as the lack of meaningful presentation of such information.

Unlocking your Enterprise Intelligence Potential

CEC assists customers with unlocking their Enterprise Intelligence potential through the effective application of expertise and information technology.

CEC provides its customers with the capability toidentify and deliver actionable information to improve top and bottom-line business performance. Increased revenues, reduced risk, cost containment and improved operational efficiency are realised by using the rapid deployment of CEC’s pre-built solution and services.

High-value Information hinges on Data Quality

As businesses look to improve productivity, there is a reliance on systems that provide accurate, complete, and consistent data. Dirty data can erode and ultimately eliminate confidence in corporate information, and render bad decisions that hinder performance and profitability.

CEC has developed a pragmatic data management framework and methodology which addresses various stages of data profiling, cleansing, validation, consolidation and migration. The framework includes the toolsets required to enforce data governance principles – not just in one system but across a variety of systems.
