Duo Returns to Spicewood Vineyards"Albert and Gage have global class, musicality,and charm"

(Houston Press)Spicewood Arts Society presents the fourth concert of the season

on Saturday, January 17, 2015 by bringing back the female/male duet of Christine Albert and Chris Gage. These dazzling performers have a track record of making beautiful music together for 18 years.

Before becoming a couple, offstage as well as on, each had their own brand of music, Christine as a regular on the Austin music scene and Chris as a band mate of Roy Clark. Now they rock, boogie, swing, trot down country roads, and stride down sophisticated boulevards together as they delight everyone in the audience with their energy, humor, personality, and great music.

All performances are held at the beautiful Spicewood Vineyards, 1419 County Road 409 in Spicewood, Texas. Wine from the vineyard is available for purchase before the performance and during intermission. Showtime is 7:00pm with the doors opening at 6:00pm.

music in the hillsTHE MUSIC MINSTRY OF SPIRIT IN THE HILLS

Praising and singing was alive and well at Spirit In The Hills Lutheran Church during the celebration of the Christmas Season. Members of Spirit In The Hills Choir sang at services throughout the Christmas Season and the choir continued the Spirit In The Hills mission of service by remembering those individuals who were unable to travel.

On December 11 the Choir traveled into Bee Cave to Park Manor the newly opened Nursing Home in the area of Bee Cave Parkway and Highway 71.

The Hills were alive with a music service led by the Choir at the worship service at 10 A.M. on Sunday December 14. Christmas Eve our youth musicians greeted worshipers with Christmas Carols as they entered the building. Christmas Eve was a service of Lessons and Carols.

Music is a vital part of Spirit In The Hills where everyone participates at the level with which they are comfortable. There are many talented musicians in the congregation that makes every service a pleasure to attend. The Choir is lead by Sharon French (director) and Jacquie Tomhave (pianist and instructor).

Special music is part of every service including instrumental and vocal offerings with the Choir singing regularly October through June.

THE PUBLIC IS INVITED TO ALL OF THESE SERVICES. Spirit In The Hills located at 3001 RO Drive in Spicewood, is a joint MISSION of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in West Lake Hills, Lakeway and St.Peter’s Lutheran Church in Marble Falls, Texas.

Thanks to the amazing generosity of the Lake Travis community, Green Santa spread the love of Christmas to 656 children from 217 Lake Travis families who are living at or below the poverty line. Our business community supported the program in various ways: Green Santa underwriters include: The Ladies of Charity-Lake Travis, Woofs Pet Salon, Mangieri's, Lakeway A/C & Heating, Lakeway Dermatology, Whitakers Auto Body & Paint, Emilie's Nail Salon, Terrell Veterinary Clinic, Strandz Salon and A to Z Dog Ranch; our donation stations: LTISD elementary and middle school campuses, the Lake Travis Community Library, Bee Cave Chick-Fil-A, World of Tennis, Prosperity Bank, Strandz Salon, Moreland Properties, Don Rucker Tire & Wheel, Bee Cave Family Chiropractic, Kuper Sotheby's, Luxe Salon, Elite Wellness, Lakeway Eye Physicians, Learning Express, Body Balance and Water District 17. We were also honored to be the beneficiary of events hosted by Sing Along, the Ladies Tennis Association of The World of Tennis, Wink Medical Aesthetics, the Ladera Neighborhood Social Committee, Champions Gymnastics & Cheer, Hill Country Bible Church and a Kuper Sotheby's Open House. And of course, we could not have filled the wish lists of our registered children without the help of the many residents of our community who donated toys, gift cards and money to purchase food cards so families could enjoy a special Holiday meal. Finally, a very hearty Ho Ho Ho of thankfulness to our Project Director Harry Kilman, to Western Industries who donated our boxes and to LTISD for providing the space needed to store, sort, box and distribute the over 1500 gifts we received.

Corporation will hold the first Lakeway Community Blood Drive of 2015 on Saturday, January 17. The drive will be held at the Lakeway Activity Center from 8am to noon. Lakeway has been the top producing community drive in the 10 county service area for the last 6 years. The local agency which supplies all of the blood for the area is The Blood Center of Central Texas. All blood collected stays in our service area. In 2014, over 445 units of blood were collected at

the Lakeway Drives. In November, 84 donors signed in and 83 units of blood were collected.

To donate, you can make an appointment by going online to inyourhands.org and follow the instructions. PARTNER WITH LTISD AND LTLOV TO PROVIDE STATE-OF-THE-ART VISION SERVICES FOR STUDENTS

The Lake Travis Lions Club and Central Texas Lions KidSight have collaborated with school nurses from the Lake Travis Independent School District and local non-profit LTlov to provide automated vision screenings for students.

In addition to the traditional Snellen Eye Chart, the automated screenings are performed using a state-of-the-art device called the Spot. LTlov—whose volunteers work to identify local needs, inspire community involvement, and distribute contributions through projects that assist and empower families in the Lake Travis area—provided a $4,000 grant that covered a large part of the cost of the new device. The remainder of the funding was provided through efforts by the Lake Travis Lions Club and Central Texas Lions KidSight.

Lake Travis ISD school nurse Sharmae Erickson said, “I am so excited about this new technology. The device allows us to screen for visual acuity deficits that we are unable to detect using the traditional Snellen Eye Chart. Additionally, we are now able to screen children we previously had been unable to screen due to language barriers or disability.”

According to Erickson, the traditional Snellen Eye Chart is a basic screening tool that only measures for visual acuity at a distance like myopia or ‘nearsightedness.’

“It is a subjective screening as students must identify letters correctly,” added Erickson. “Unfortunately, there are several issues that can lead to visual acuity concerns in children that are not detected using the traditional Snellen Eye Chart. Thankfully, the automated screening device is able to screen for most other visual concerns.”

Similar to the simplicity and speed of a digital camera, the Spot device can detect the following vision issues:• Near-sightedness(myopia)• Far-sightedness(hyperopia)• Unequalrefractivepower(anisometropia)• Blurredvision(astigmatism)• Pupilsizedeviations(anisocoria)• Eyemisalignment(strabismus)In just seconds, Spot provides objective and easy-to-understand results

to help parents and caregivers determine proper follow-up vision care.“We have a large pre-K population at my campus,” Lake Travis ISD

school nurse Laura Gault said. “It has been difficult to screen these children in the past due to decreased attention span, inability to follow directions, or language barriers. The Spot device has a sensitivity that is superior to any exam we currently perform. The technology is simply second to none.”

“Local Lions Club member Jan Johnson had the ‘vision’ to bring this device to our community,” Erickson added. “Jan began a non-profit organization called Central Texas Lions KidSight. The organization successfully promoted a rule change in the state of Texas which took effect in August 2014 that allows for children up to six years of age to be screened with the Spot device instead of eye charts. The rule also allows use of the device as an adjunct to traditional screenings in older children.”

In addition to Johnson and Erickson, Lake Travis Lions Club and Central Texas Lions KidSight members include Seth Brower, Emilia Hayes, John Mann, Larry Swim, optometrist Tristan Wild and other

trained volunteers who will assist with Spot vision screenings at LTISD. “We want all daycares, preschools, and private schools to know that Lions offer this state-of-the-art vision screening with Spot absolutely free” said Johnson.

Odds are good that you know who Tony Robbins is. If you don’t, he is famous for selling his self-help programs to millions through TV infomercials, and he successfully trains thousands of people who attend his events to walk on fire at the end of the first day. So what in the world does a “self-help guru” know about investing?

The answer a couple of years ago was – not a lot. But when Tony wants to learn something, he doesn’t do it in a small way.

Tony decided that he wanted to learn the secrets of investing like the Billionaires do. So he went out and interviewed them. What he learned went into a new book he is releasing called “Money – Master the Game”.

For those of you who want the short version, here are four key points:

1. Don’t lose money. Billionaire investors focus on not losing money over everything else.

2. Risk a little to make a lot. Look for the home run, but only do it with a small amount of your portfolio.

3. Anticipate and diversify. Educate yourself so you can be knowledgeable, and when the moment is there, strike! But make

sure you diversify as billionaire investors always assume that they will be wrong.

4. You are never done. Billionaires continue to learn and never stop. You should do the same.

If you ask me, I would say those are four great investment points to live by. I would also tell you that reading Tony’s book is a good idea.

Empowering Austin Homelessby: Kathleen Highsmith

On Tuesday, August 26th 2014, the Texas State Enactus class started for the Fall semester and I started to see the difference this group makes in central Texas. Enactus students continually work on projects that benefit the community and also help individuals to help themselves.

One of the main goals of Enactus is to empower people through our projects. My favorite project that does just that is Mobile Loaves and Fishes, which is currently building sustainable housing for the homeless in Austin. Along with housing we also provide the homeless with employment by helping them sell crafts and frozen treats during the many festivals in and around Austin. Our ultimate goal with Mobile Loaves and Fishes is to help build a set of skills that the homeless can use to find steady work and help get them off the streets. Enactus is all about helping people help themselves and as an Enactus student I have learned some valuable lessons and grown as an individual while doing just that.
