Being a part of a Credit Union can be rewarding in so many ways! We offer a variety of services to our
members. These services range from deposit accounts, CD’s, low interest loans and credit cards. We are
also very happy to announce our newest service, Financial Counseling. That’s right, we have a Certified
Credit Union Financial Counselor on site at the Credit Union. What exactly is a financial counselor and
what can they do for you? Let’s take some time for a Q and A with our CCUFC, Jessica Stone.
Who is Jessica Stone?
Jessica has been with BFCU for 5 years and 4 months. She started out as a Member Service
Representative in 2015 and quickly worked her way up to the Loan Processor. From there, she became
the Assistant Loan Officer and then in 2019 she was promoted to the Loan Manager. This past March
Jessica was certified as a Credit Union Financial Counselor. Jessica is married with 2 kids, 3 dogs and
2 cats. She loves working at the Credit Union and being able to help our members.
What is a Financial Counselor?
A Financial Counselor helps members with budgeting, planning, saving and debt solutions. Their main
goal is to advise and motivate. A counselor can help you understand your credit score, manage your
debt, retirement, estate planning and even get help from public assistance agencies.
Who is eligible for the Financial Counseling Services?
Everyone is eligible! There are 3 types of counseling:
Remedial - helps members cope with debt and poor money management.
Preventative - helps members with good financial habits manage financial challenges due to life changes.
Productive Counseling - helps members identify the ways to use their resources to improve their financial
status.
Is this a one time session or will I need to come back?
The whole counseling process can take a couple hours to several weeks and even months. She will need
to gather as much information as possible. Some examples include: income, expenses, debt and
payments going out or coming in. She can then discuss ways to consolidate debt by paying off high
interest loans and budgeting for future success.
How much does the Credit Union charge for these services?
The Financial Counseling services that we offer are absolutely free! You can have peace of mind knowing
that we are here to help you every step of the way to a better financial future!
