Welcome to the inaugural Brew Bern Beer Fest. I have been asked, “Why a beer festival in New Bern?” I always respond, “Why not!” When New Bern was founded by Swiss and German immigrants 300 years ago, they brought with them a strong brewing legacy from Europe. I can’t think of a better way to celebrate that heritage than with a premier beer festival.

Over the past year North Carolina has been called the great beer state of the south. I would agree with that statement if you live west of the Interstate 95 corridor. You can count on two hands the number of breweries, brew pubs, and beer bars that we have in the 18,000 square miles that make up Eastern North Carolina. While their offerings are superb, the variety and accessibility of different brands pales in comparison to the remainder of the Old North State.

Beer Army’s mission is simple; develop a robust craft beer scene and community in Eastern North Carolina. We feel the best way to accomplish this goal is by hosting a premier beer festival. New Bern has all the ingredients necessary to start this ENC beer revolution.

I hope you enjoy yourself in revisiting and hopefully finding some favorite new brews. I only have one standing request from you. Please drink responsibly. This means being courteous to your fellow festival patrons and under no circumstances, DO NOT DRIVE DRUNK!

FESTIVAL GUIDELINE SUGGESTIONS

With so many beers and only four hours of time where should you start? Here are some tips and strategies to help you get the most from your festival experience.

SMART HABITS�� Start with lighter tasting beers and move to

stronger as you progress through the session. �� Don’t be afraid to try something new.�� Don’t like the sample, no problem, pour it out.

That is what the dump buckets are for.�� Rinse your glass with water between samples.�� Drink plenty of water through out the session.�� Don’t try and sample every beer at the festival.�� Have fun but be responsible.

TASTING 101�� Sniff your sample as soon as it is poured to pick

up on any aromas.�� Now look at the beer and notice the color, clarity,

and the head.�� Sniff your beer again and notice any additional

aromas that have developed.�� Take your first sip and allow it to coat your palate

allowing it to linger a couple of seconds before swallowing. Determine the flavor, finish, and aftertaste.

�� Take a second sip to determine the mouthfeel, body, and other palate sensations.

�� Form your overall impression and discuss with friends.

Beer Army is a philanthropist organization and we are proud to support local charities with proceeds from our festivals.

We are excited to be associated with and raising money for Hope for the Warriors. Beer Army has chosen this charity due to their fiscal restraint in that 92% of every dollar donated goes to those in need. They enhance the quality of life for U.S. service members and their families nationwide who have been adversely affected by injuries or death in the line of duty. Our community has a strong sense of military service as we have three major military bases within a 50 mile radius.

We will also be donating money to the North Carolina Brewers Guild. NCBG’s intent is to support the beer communities in the state and guide the craft beer aficionados by providing the one source that allows access to the breweries, brewers, and their beers where ever they are served, presented, and celebrated.
