PAWS Has Many Great Dogs & Cats for Adoption! If you know of someone that would make a great pet owner and has a fenced-in yard (for dogs), have them give us a call at (918) 686-7297.
Before bringing a new dog into your home, please
carefully consider the needs and characteristics of the breed. Some breeds require a great deal of outside exercise, or even a "job" to do in order to be healthy and happy. Other breeds are real lap dogs or good around children or other animals. Do your homework before you adopt!
Green Paw Efforts: Through our efforts to recycle aluminum pop, beer and
energy drink cans, PAWS earned $625.72 for 2015. Please drop off your donations to our shelter!

Pet Tips
Spaying a female cat before her first heat cycle will contribute to a longer life for her.
Neutered male cats are calmer, less likely to roam and less likely to develop prostrate cancer.
Be gentle, but firm when training your dog. Never hit the dog as this creates fear, not respect.
Dogs who are trained to obey commands are less likely to bite when nervous or injured.
Avoid isolating your dog and give it the opportunity to socialize around people.
CAT FACTS
The domestic cat is the only species able to hold its tail vertically while walking. Wild cats hold their tail
horizontally, or tucked between their legs while walking.
The catgut formerly used as strings in tennis rackets and musical instruments does not come from cats.
Catgut actually comes from sheep, hogs, and horses.
Both humans and cats have identical regions in the brain responsible for emotions.
Electric light or light from your TV set will make your cat shed their fur.
Sir Isaac Newton invented the cat door.
Despite its reputation for being finicky, the average cat consumes about 127,750 calories a year, nearly 28
times its own weight in food and the same amount again in liquids. In case you were wondering, cats
cannot survive on a vegetarian diet.
The Maine Coon cat is America's only natural breed of domestic feline.
2015 PAWS Adoption Summary

A Special “THANKS TO VOLUNTEERS”
These ladies brought homemade treats for the shelter dogs for Christmas. And they brought their sweet little dogs dressed in their Christmas outfits. The little black one was adopted from PAWS 3 years ago. A big thank you to these ladies and their sweet little dogs! Thanks to Rose Mary Lemley, Ranae Bumgarner, Charlotte Palmer, Jessie and Carol Everett and Patsy Rodin for all their efforts on behalf of PAWS. We couldn’t give enough thanks to Louis Farmer, who mows, weed eats and brush hogs the pasture behind PAWS and our front lawn. He also goes to Oklahoma City and elsewhere for loads of food and for supplies here in town. Louis repairs things at PAWS has saved us many thousands of dollars over the years! We truly appreciate Linda Lee for keeping our face book page up and Chad Farmer for many years of doing our web page.
GOOD IDEAS for dealing with pet messes….
A window squeegee works wonders on furniture and stairs for removing pet hair.
A regular rubber glove works to pick up hair but doesn't have to be wet.
You can use a lint roller on your cat. They will love it and they are getting groomed at the same time.
Woolite is a good pet stain remover.
ANIMAL ABUSE & HUMAN ABUSE PARTNERS IN CRIME
Violent acts toward animals have long been recognized as indicators of a violent psychopathology that does not
confine itself to animals. "Anyone who has accustomed himself to regard the life of any living creature as
worthless is in danger of arriving also at the idea of worthless human lives." wrote humanitarian Albert
Schweitzer. "Murders very often start out by killing and torturing animals as kids," according to Robert K.
Resler, who developed profiles of serial killers for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Studies have now
convinced sociologists, lawmakers, and the courts that acts of cruelty toward animals deserve our attention.
They can be the first sign of a violent pathology that includes humans.
A LONG ROAD OF VIOLENCE
Animal abuse is not just the result of a minor personality flaw in the abuser, but a symptom of deep disturbance.
Research in psychology and criminology shows that people who commit acts of cruelty against animals don't
stop there; many of them move on to their fellow humans.
The FBI has found that a history of cruelty to animals is one of the traits that regularly appears in its computer
records of serial rapists and murderers, and the standard diagnostic and treatment manual for psychiatric and
emotional disorders lists cruelty to animals as a diagnostic criterion for conduct disorders.
Studies have shown that violent and aggressive criminals are more likely to have abused animals as children
than criminals considered non-aggressive. A survey of psychiatric patients who had repeatedly tortured dogs
and cats found all of them had high levels of aggression toward people as well, including one patient who had
murdered a boy. To researchers, a fascination with cruelty to animals is a red flag in the lives of serial rapists
and killers.
