Adobe InDesign (CS2 and CS3) - Exporting to PDF

Before exporting a PDF, create a PDF preset. Under the File menu,select Adobe PDF Presets/Define. Choose the [Press Quality]Preset, then click on the “New...” button.

Make the necessary changes so that your settings match thoseshown here.

In CS3 there is an ExportLayers option. Leave it onVisable & Printable Layers.

When finished, click ok and the presetwill be saved.

To export a PDF:Choose File/Export, specify the nameand location for the PDF, then clickSave. Choose the SPI preset, enter thepage number, and click Export.

Make sure the Compatibility has beenchanged to Acrobat 4. If Acrobat 5 isselected, the Transparency Flatteneroptions will not be available.

Use these settings to make a postscript file from InDesign CS2 or CS3. You will runthat postscript through Distiller to make a PDF.

Begin by creating a Print Preset.This way, every time you print, you can simply

select the Print Preset you’ve made, and yoursettings will fall into place.

Name your Print Preset. SelectPostscript File for Printer andAdobe PDF for the PPD.

Click “New”

Under “File” in your menu bar,select “Print Presets” andchoose “Define”.

In CS3 there is a PrintLayers option. Leave it onVisable & Printable Layers.

In the Marks & Bleedsoption, choose onlyCrop Marks and PageInformation. Specify themark weight to .25 pt,and offset to 12pt or.1667 inches.

Do not use document bleedsettings.

Set all sides to bleed halfan inch.

In the Setup option, choosecustom for your paper sizeand specify your width andheight one full inch largerthan your trim size. Scaleyour width and height bothfor 100%. Your page positionshould be centered.

Do not specify any offset orgap. Do not scale your pageto fit any type of paper.

In the Output option,choose Composite CMYKfor your color output.

In the Graphics option, send“All” image data. Download“Complete” fonts. Set“Postscript” for Level 3 andData Format as Binary.

In the Advanced option,select “High Resolution”under Transparency Flattener

Click “OK” to save your printstyle and “Save” when giventhe option in the original PrintStyle window.

You’re now ready to create apostscript. Just click onPrint, and select the PrintPreset you just created.Choose the page range andclick the Save button.

Now run the postscriptthrough Distiller.

If you have Acrobat Professional, you have the ability to set up hot folders in AcrobatDistiller. To set up a hot folder, use the short cut “command-F” (control-F on a PC). Click“Add” and choose the folder where you placed your postscripts. Distiller will automati-cally create “In” and “Out” folders. Move your postscript files to the “In” folder andDistiller will automatically create PDF files.
