Firebird Forensics for Carrie Evans During the school holidays Carrie Evans (Year 10 Music) travelled to Sydney to attend a selective workshop in Sydney called Firebird Forensics where she worked with 30 other gifted and talented music and dance students from all across NSW public schools to dissect Stravinsky’s Firebird suite under the guidance of Paul Rissmann.

They were given 5 days to re-compose the firebird suite with a final performance at the Conservatorium of Music in Sydney.

We at Bega High are very proud of Carrie following her dreams to become a professional musician!

Opens Girls Hockey On Wednesday 6th April the Open Girls Hockey side defeated Moruya High 11 - 0.

It was evident that many players had not played since last winter, as although we had most of the play Bega High girls just couldn’t seem to score. After what seemed like an eternity the girls strung a few good passes together in the circle to score. It wasn’t long before the girls started working as a team and the goals kept following.

There is no one standout in the team as all team members played well. However, the depth of the side showed that the side will continue to be a force to the Wollongong sides in the years to come.

The next game is due to be played against the 2015 number 4 side in the state Crookwell High School.

Bega High would like to thank Daniel Smith for all the behind the scene work he did along with umpires Sharon Heffernan and Matt Jennings.

The triumph Bega Girls Hockey Side.

Representative Hockey

Early in Term 1 approximately 12 students attended Goulburn for the open girls/boys hockey trials. It was great to see that the following students were selected in the zone side to trial for the South Coast region:

Carla Alcock – Year 8 Jamie O’Brien – Year 9 Jayden Haycock – Year 9 Ethan Jones – Year 11 Rowan Barber – Year 10 Daniel Smith – Year 12

Daniel showed his talent and determination at the region trials and was successful in gaining South Coast selection. Daniel will play for state selection in Week 5 in Sydney. We wish Daniel the best of luck in achieving his goal.

The number of students representing Bega High School shows the depth of talent in the hockey area and we look forward to more representative honours in the future.

Year 8 Advisor Report Excursions - A Chance to Learn Believe it or not my best memories of my high school days in North Queensland are of the days I wasn’t at school at all. By far the best days were when I was on excursion. As you may have noticed I love excursions. I don’t particularly love the paperwork, the risk assessments or the stress on the day but I do love the idea that the relationships we form at school can be tested in a non-school environment while experiencing a different type of educational challenge.

So far my Year 8s have had an in-school Easter egg hunt and pizza party as well as two movie excursions, a community picnic day and an overnight and a three day camp.

I am planning a rather big one for Term 4 this year which will include an overnight trip to the Illawarra region. This trip will include a visit to a couple of the area’s fantastic educational resources as well as a few hours at Jamberoo.

I am always conscious of the cost involved in these excursions so I do my best to make them as affordable as possible. Last year’s all inclusive 3 day camp for $60 is an example of my budgeting efforts. I will again ensure that the excursion will be as affordable as possible but it will inevitably be more expensive than any earlier trips. I am flagging the excursion now to enable families to begin to budget for it.

As before a $20 deposit will secure a place and then parents will have 2 full terms to pay it off. I will let you all know before the end of this term the actual cost.

Paddling through Language English as an Alternative Language /Dialect Camp at Bournda Our five Thai students each invited a friend to join them on our first excursion for the English as an Alternative Language /Dialect (EAL/D) group.

On Monday, 4 April we headed out to Bournda Environmental Education Centre (BEEC) for two great days of learning.

After settling ourselves into the field studies hut we took to Bournda Lagoon in kayaks with the wonderful Bob Ellis from BEEC carefully guiding us. This was a particular challenge for those who could not swim. It was wonderful to see the students’ skills and confidence develop in such a short time.

By the afternoon we had a very competitive game of a version of water polo and finally some students were brave and confident enough to attempt the challenge of walking over the other kayaks.

Back at the field huts all the students helped cook a delicious BBQ and clean up. Mr Freedman joined us for the evening and Ms Teranishi brought her children along to join us for a couple of hours. We all told stories from our respective cultures around the camp fire and then braved the dark on a night walk. All the staff members were impressed with the maturity of the students as we turned off torches and sat looking at the stars, listening in silence to the sound of the bush as night. It was a truly magical experience.

The next morning Mr Freedman treated the students to a wonderfully loud version of “Oh what a beautiful morning . . . “ using the field huts as a percussion instrument to encourage those wanting a lie in to come to breakfast.

Bob Ellis generously gave us extra hours of his time to supervise the ropes course. It may look small, but it is certainly challenging! Afterwards we went to Scott’s Bay and tried some of BEEC’s challenge games. These are designed to encourage teamwork and develop problem solving skills and it is always interesting to see different students’ strengths come to the fore. The situations also encourage great communication skills, for example, one game involved blindfolding a partner and then leading them around, giving instructions of how to move around.

The aim of the excursion was to give the EAL/D students the opportunity to participate in activities they may not have tried previously, to encourage friendships outside their nationality group, to practise using English in authentic situations and to have fun. It was a great success.

Smoking – every cigarette you DON’T smoke is doing you GOOD!

Bega High School is partnering with the Bega Valley Tackling Tobacco Network to support students, teachers, parents and caregivers of BHS to stop, or reduce, their smoking. If you smoke, you can access FREE NICOTINE REPLACEMENT THERAPY and confidential support and advice.

Here are some facts about quitting you may not be aware of –

FACT 1: Quitting smoking at any age will result in major and immediate health benefits. FACT 2: Two hours after stopping, all nicotine is out of your system. In about two days, all the nicotine by products have gone. FACT 3: Within a few hours of quitting, the carbon monoxide is out of your system. After a few months, your lungs work better with less effort and you can do more before you run out of breath. FACT 4: Within two days of quitting, your taste buds come alive and your sense of smell improves. Your breath, hair, fingers, teeth and clothes are cleaner. FACT 5: After three weeks without smoking, exercising will be easier because your body needs less oxygen and more air is getting into your lungs. FACT 6: Within two months of quitting, the blood flow to your hands and feet improves. FACT 7: Within three months of quitting, the cilia (cleaning system in your lungs) begin to recover, and remove the mucus in your lungs so you can cough it up. Your lungs start to work better, and activities like climbing the stairs and running for the bus become easier. FACT 8: After twelve months of not smoking, your risk of heart disease is down to almost half that of a smoker’s. For more information about how we can support your quit attempt contact BHS on 6492 9000 or Liz Scott, Health Promotion & Youth Health Officer, Grand Pacific Health, 0417 520 101 or [email protected]
