Begich M.S. Newsletter Volume 11 Issue 2 December 2017
The last day of second quarter is Thursday Dec. 21st. All student work is due on or before Wednesday Dec. 20th. It is super important to check Q ParentConnect for your student’s missing assignments. Remember we do not print report cards anymore, therefore you will need to log in to Q ParentConnect to view your student’s grades. Keep in mind, second semester grades will be available to be viewed January 9th. Cross Country Skiing and Boys Basketball start right away when we return from winter break. You can turn in the paperwork now and schedule a sports physical with Anchorage School Based Health Clinic here at Begich. This way your student will be ready to go the first day of practice. Congratulations to the 115 students who earned a 4.0 1st quarter We also had 92 students who were NEVER tardy to a class first quarter. Over all our students are doing a fantastic job, 57.14% (567) of our students earned a 3.0 or higher GPA first quarter. Have a great winter break, and if there is anything I or the staff here at Begich Middle School can do to help and support you please give us a call or stop by.

Winter has finally arrived! We are so lucky to live
in Alaska and have the opportunity to get out and
enjoy the outdoors. Depending on schedules,
equipment, and outdoor conditions, classes will be outside to play outdoor games, cross-country ski, ice-
skate, and snowshoe. Students are expected to participate fully in these units and stay with their
assigned classes. Classes will be outside unless the temperature drops below -10 or unsafe conditions
exists. Students need to come to class prepared. That means being dressed in layers to ensure
personal comfort, especially on block days when classes can be outdoors for 60+ minutes.
The REQUIRED outdoor PE uniform includes:
Hat
Coat
Gloves
OPTIONAL: Long, thick socks that cover the ankles, snow
pants, or sunglasses.
Please remember that if a student misses a PE class, those points need to be made up by performing 30
-minutes of physical activity outside of the school day for a Monday and 60-minutes of physical activity
for a block day (T/TH, W/F). PE Makeup Forms are available on the our PE webpage:
https://sites.google.com/a/asdk12.net/begich-middle-school/home/physical-education/PE-Handouts
in the locker rooms, on station whiteboards, or from PE teachers. Makeups are the responsibility of the
student and are due by December 22nd.
Please get out and play 60 minutes every day!
~Ms. Gamble, Mr. Maslen, Mrs. Moore, Ms. Osborne, & Mr. Szymanski
Mrs. Saindon’s and Mr. Shuttleworth’s classes participated in
the Special Olympic Middle School Bowling Challenge. We
had a great time seeing old friends, meeting new friends, and
bowling! Thank you to our fantastic partners; Makiya Singleton,
Henry deHoop and Ana Hokenson!
In November, our Life Skill classes also enjoyed our
annual Thanksgiving Feast! It was an afternoon
filled with food, friends and dancing! Thank you to
all the families and staff who donated dishes,
ingredients and gift cards which made it all possible.
Mrs. Saindon’s class has been busy creating the
school’s annual holiday card that will be sent off to
other schools, administration and school business
partners. The staff and students are very proud of
this year’s card!
From Mr. Shuttleworth’s and Mrs. Saindon’s class, we wish everyone a peaceful winter break!
Second quarter has seen fun, educational, and engaging experiences happening in the 21st Century After-School Program. Here are some of our highlights: • Making spring rolls with our partners at
Botanical Gardens from greens that the students grew themselves.
• Engineering projects. • UAA students leading interactive lessons
about how to live a health life. • Students getting creative with 3D pens. • Rocketry • Students expressing themselves with
watercolor and haikus led by Ms. Teeka. Students were given the prompt to write several haikus - ancient Japanese poetry consisting of only three lines, with the syllables of 5/7/5. The haikus focused on nature, thankfulness, and things that inspire emotion within us. Students then made water color posters and put their haikus atop them. Take a minute to read, reflect and get inspired!
• Reinforcement of foundational math skills with the quiz game Kahoot!
The last day of 21st Century for the semester will be December 14th. We will resume programming on January 16th. If your student is already enrolled in the program there is no need to re-apply. If you are interested in having your student join next semester please contact the coordinator, Ms. Worthy, at 742-0539 / [email protected]

Students that want to join school sports need to have had a physical in the past 12 months. If you want your physical done at Begich’s Healthy Spot Clinic, turn in the updated ASD Physical form with the health history section completed. If additional paperwork is needed, we will let your student know. Many students already have consent through the ASD online registration. When paperwork is received, the student will be called from class for the physical exam. We will prioritize students who need a physical for school sports and then on a first come, first served basis. For families with Bartlett students, our clinic there opened in November. Medical providers will be at both schools weekly in 2018. If you have any questions about our services, please call: 223-2680
