DUAL-STAGE AIRBAGSThe driver and passenger*airbag register the collisionforce and adjust inflationaccordingly - with fullpressure for high crashforces, or with reducedpressure if the crash forceis lower. If the airbags arenot needed, only the safetybelt pre-tensioners willbe deployed.

The car can also be orderedwithout a passenger airbag.

SIPS SIDE-IMPACTPROTECTIONDistributes crash forces ina side impact across alarge part of the body ofthe car so as to helpminimise the strain on theoccupants. IC inflatablecurtains for all theoccupants and the frontseat side airbags offer headand chest protection.

I C INFLATABLEHEAD-PROTECTIONCURTAINSOffer protectioni rrespective of whether youare sitting in the front orrear. Inflates in aside-impact accident toprotect the heads of all theoccupants. LOAD SAFETYLoads are secured mostsafely using the eyelets inthe load compartmentfloor. A steel safety grilleprotects passengers fromluggage when brakingsharply. In addition, all theseats are designed towithstand considerablepressure fromunsecured loads.

ENERGY-ABSORBINGI NTERIORAll the panels and doorsides are padded withenergy-absorbingmaterials to help reducethe risk of injury tothe occupants.

PERSONAL SECURITYAn electronic immobiliserand door locks thatwithstand most break-inattempts help protectagainst theft. Approachand Home Safe lighting*make it easy to illuminateyour path to and from thecar. A remotely controlledalarm is standard.

SAFETY BELTSWITH PRE-TENSIONERSAll the seats have headrestraints and three-pointsafety belts withpre-tensioners. In a crash,the safety belt is pulledtight to helpprovide maximumprotection. The front safetybelts then slacken slightlyso that the occupant iscushioned by the airbag ina controlled way.

CHILD SAFETYThe integrated boostercushions in the rear seatensure that the safety beltis correctly positioned onthe child (option). Foryounger children, there areVolvo's rearward-facingchild seats with the ISOFIXattachment system for theouter rear seats and thefront passenger seat if noairbag is fitted (option).

WHIPS (Whiplash Protection System) reduces the strain on thespine and neck in rear-end collisions. It is integrated in thefront seats and is activated by a sufficiently severe rear impact.

Volvo's unique SIPS side-impact protection system uses alarge part of the car body to absorb the force of an impact.The IC (inflatable curtain) and side airbags provide maximumprotection for the head and chest in a side impact.

The Volvo XC70 is an exceptionally rewardingall-road driving experience. The low centre ofgravity and even weight distribution contributeto its stable road behaviour. Multilink rearsuspension provides both first class ridecomfort and well-balanced, consistent roadmanners. Driving stability is further aided bythe electronically controlled AWD system.

Drive is automatically distributed between thefront and rear wheels within fractions of asecond, as current conditions demand. DSTC(Dynamic Stability and Traction Control)automatically detects and counteracts anytendency to skid by braking the wheelsnecessary to retain control.

The new electronically controlled all-wheeldrive system (AWD) is optimised to providesuperior roadholding and get-you-there abilityunder all driving conditions. It respondsextremely swiftly, which makes it possible tobalance understeering and oversteeringtendencies with exceptional precision.

For example, during rapid acceleration orforced cornering, drive is redistributedseamlessly between the front and rear wheelswithin a mere fraction of a second -depending on what is needed to providemaximum driving stability. Behind the wheel,you'll never be aware of when the AWDsystem engages and disengages - you willjust enjoy that superb feeling of total control.

The AWD system communicatescontinuously with the engine, the DSTC system,

the brakes and other functions so as to alwaysrespond optimally to current driving conditions.

WHEN THE ROAD IS SLIPPERY

The advantages of Volvo's AWD system areparticularly noticeable on slippery roads. Sincethe wheel pair with the best grip alwaysreceives most power, the car is outstandinglystable. And making your way ahead on slipperyroad surfaces is no problem. The AWD system'sshort reaction time gives immediate drive tothe wheels that need it so you can make swiftprogress and maintain control even underdifficult conditions. At low speeds, Volvo'santi-spin system, TRACS, ensures that thewheel with the best grip gets most power. So,i n order to get going, only one wheel needs tohave a grip on the road.

Normally, the front wheels get almost allthe power.

If the front wheels show any tendencyto spin, the AWD system respondswithin fractions of a second by engagingall-wheel drive for maximum stability.

I f a wheel spins on one side, morepower goes instantly to the oppositewheel.

When braking, the car disengages driveto the rear wheels the moment youtouch the brake pedal, preparing itself tomaximise control and roadholding.

I n order to get going, only one wheelneeds to have a grip on the road.

If you carry heavy loads, the rear wheelsreceive more power to maximise drivingstability.

ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION

VOLVO XC70 2.5T (210 BHP)The in-line five-cylinder 2.5-litre turbocharged petrolengine provides a beautifully balanced and alert drivingexperience. You have access to full engine torque.(320 Nm) from as little as 1500 rpm - so you canmove off smartly and seldom need to change down forovertaking. The very latest advances in enginetechnology with low internal friction and variable valveti ming for both inlet and exhaust valves provideexcellent performance and cleaner exhaust emissionsunder all driving conditions. And at the same time, youbenefit from a modest fuel consumption.

VOLVO XC70 D5 (163 BHP)Volvo's direct-injected five-cylinder 2.4-litre all-aluminiumturbodiesel engine harmonises with the dynamicproperties of the Volvo XC70. The very latest dieselengine technology featuring common rail directinjection and variable turbine geometry results in alertresponse, exceptionally smooth operation, remarkablepulling power and, not least, superior fuel economy.High torque (340 Nm) from 1750 rpm providesexcellent performance whatever the driving conditions.The low engine weight contributes to thelow fuel consumption and the well-balancedroad behaviour.

MANUAL GEARBOXIf you prefer a more involving driving style and don'tnormally need to haul heavy loads in awkwardsituations, you will enjoy the smooth and distinctall-synchromesh manual gearbox. (Standard in theVolvo XC70 2.5T, not available in the Volvo XC70 D5.)

GEARTRONIC TRANSMISSIONWith Geartronic automatic transmission, you get twogearboxes in one: firstly, an adaptive five-speedautomatic transmission for relaxed driving and

secondly, a manual gearbox if you want to drive moreactively. In Automatic mode, the transmission registersyour driving style and adapts the gearchanging patternaccordingly. The auto transmission is also perfect ifyou need to get the car to crawl slowly with a heavyload under difficult conditions. A separate Wintermode makes it easier to get under way whenconditions are slippery. In Manual mode, you changeup by pushing the gear lever forwards and down bypulling the lever towards you. (Standard in the VolvoXC70 D5 and optional in the Volvo XC70 2.5T.)

DSTC ANTI-SKID SYSTEMDSTC (Dynamic Stability and Traction Control) givesyou the benefits of the STC anti-spin system whileautomatically counteracting a skid as it starts, wellbefore you even notice. If there is any tendency toslide, the brakes are instantly applied to one or morewheels as necessary to retain control. The system alsoi ncludes EBA (Emergency Brake Assistance) whichhelps cut the stopping distance in emergency braking.Standard on 2.5T, option on D5.

ALUMINIUM ENGINE PROTECTION SHIELDProtects the engine, sump and transmission frombottoming when driving on really bad roads(Accessory).LOAD COMPENSATING SUSPENSIONFor more stable roadholding, better comfort andun-affected ground clearance when driving with heavyl oads or using the car for towing. The shock absorbersare automatically adjusted up to the level the carwould have without the extra load. When the load isremoved, the shock absorbers automatically return totheir original position (Standard).
