Craig BicketGeneral Manager / Beijer Ref Australia

Welcome to the first edition of Beijer Ref Down Under!

Since being appointed General Manager of Beijer Ref Australia I am extremely excited to see the depth of talent across our business and also to be a part of this great team. Talent is the most important attribute of making a successful business and we are in a strong position to take on the next phase of our journey.

Our business will continue to grow over the coming years as we anticipate an aggressive expansion plan to grow our market share. We now have access to world renowned brands such as SCM Frigo, Danfoss, Gree, Frascold and Guntner to mention a few, these brands together with our people give Beijer Ref Australia the platform to become cemented in the top three wholesalers in Australia.

As we continue the merge process we expect to see many positive changes. One of the many exciting things to come is the first Beijer Ref Australia “Capital Products Catalogue” which is expected to be released at ARBS 2016. Our capital products offering coupled with our ability to manufacture give our company a clear differentiation compared to our competitors.

We are now in a strong position to offer our customers a complete solution for all their refrigeration and air conditioning needs, our products, people and our desire to improve will see us all be proud of the business we are building.

I can’t wait to see what the future Beijer Ref Australia will look like!

Everything you could want to know about renovating, expanding or building is at the Courier Mail Home Show. This is Brisbane’s favourite home show and it’s been coming back year after year.

If you’re stuck in a renovating rut or looking to fix parts of your property after all of the rain you should be at the Home Show. Think stand after stand filled with displays galore. The beauty of this show is that you don’t have to drag yourself and the kids to shop after shop or spend hours on the internet. It’s right here for you with real people to discuss your needs.

Over 300 leading Queensland suppliers are on hand to give advice and offer tips. The organisers recommend you bring your photos and plans so that you can have real time discussions with suppliers and tradesman about your renovation and installation ideas. If visitors want to ensure they do get time with an expert for more indepth discussions, just go on to the website, choose the specification eg. kitchen and select to “book an expert” to arrange your free 20 minute consultation in advance.

All of the new innovations in kitchens and bathrooms, interiors and exteriors, going green and going tech savvy are on show at the Home Show. Whether you’re looking for the best in new

tapware, or ideas on saving electricity, it’s here. Aisle upon aisle of products, pamphlets and samples. You’ll come out loaded up with leaflets and information with a good understanding of the latest trends and products in the market. A lot of exhibitors here also often offer home show discounts - if you buy or sign up to a product during the home show weekend then substantial reductions are offered on price.

The show offers the latest in building and construction products including backyard and swimming pool trends.

Well, the time has arrived and I am about to retire.

For me it is the end of an era and I am about to start a new phase of my life!

I started working in the refrigeration

and air conditioning industry in 1971 as a

Sales Rep for Bonaire Industries in Dunedin , New

Zealand and have worked in the industry since that date.

I first joined Patton in 1977 based in Christchurch, then a two branch company, and apart from a ten-year break have continued to work for Patton ever since. This industry has given me the chance to work in New Zealand, United Kingdom and Australia and this has enabled me to meet some wonderful people and has provided many great experiences.

As we all know, Patton Australia has encountered some major changes in the last twelve months and the merger of the two companies has caused a level of uncertainty and disruption amongst some staff. I am sure that as the year evolves things will settle down and Beijer Ref will become a major force in the wholesaling industry.

The Refrigeration and Air Conditioning industry is a small industry and I feel proud, that over the past six years, while working for Patton Australia we have

built up an excellent team of people whose dedication and loyalty has helped to expand our Branch footprint, increase sales and have an impact on our competitors. I am very grateful for that dedication, loyalty and enthusiasm and I trust you will feel as proud as I do with the results achieved.

While I am sorry not to be part of the new venture going forward I wish everyone all the very best for the future and trust that the ongoing transition into the Beijer Ref organisation will be a smooth one.

It will be somewhat of an adjustment for me not having to get up each day and go to work, but I am looking forward to an overseas holiday mid-year to catch up with our children and grandchildren who live in various parts of the world. And I am slightly nervous about the ‘list’ that Moira keeps talking about – maybe going to work might be easier!!!

She doesn’t seem to understand that one of the definitions of retire is ‘stop work’

Don’t forget to give me a call when you decide to have a holiday on the beautiful Sunshine Coast!!

Goodbye and all the best! Stuart.

ACQUISITIONS PROVIDE BEIJER REF WITH A NATIONAL

FOOTPRINT.CCN talks exclusively to Beijer Ref general manager, Craig Bicket, about the wholesaler’s local expansion plans following its 2015 acquisitions of Realcold and Patton.

These acquisitions were big news, both companies were well established in the Australian market. And while Beijer Ref may be new to Australia, the company certainly isn’t a new wholesaler.

It is one of the largest refrigeration and HVAC wholesalers in the world. In fact Beijer Ref is only getting bigger.

Its most recent acquisition spree is a significant step forward in the company’s strategy to broaden its presence outside of Europe.

Last year the company finalised its acquisition of Realcold and Patton with Beijer Ref general manager, Craig Bicket, confident the process of rebranding will be completed by the end of 2016.

Like the company, Bicket isn’t new to the HVACR industry in Australia. He is pretty well known after spending nearly two decades with Actrol.

In his last position, Bicket was Actrol’s state manager for Victoria, Northern Territory, Tasmania and South Australia.

So what’s the main focus for Beijer Ref in 2016? According to Bicket, he is busy consolidating operations with the focus on establishing a truly national footprint across Australia.

“We are in the midst of creating one team with an organisational structure that has a strong focus on engineering,” he said.

“There are six application engineers available to customers plus we have manufacturing operations in Brisbane and Sydney. We have the flexibility and adaptability to respond to the needs of customers.”

With 81 staff across 20 branches, the company’s presence in Australia is supported by administrative staff in New Zealand.

“Heat exchangers are manufactured in Sydney while refrigeration racks and units are manufactured in Brisbane,” Bicket said.

“The core part of our business is refrigeration. That is one of our differientators in the market.”

Another differentiator is the company’s access to exlusive brands such as Gree airconditioning and Italian firm SCM Frigo.

It has been an interesting 12 months for Beijer Ref especially when its Patton acquisition was first announced in March 2015.

When the company acquired Patton, Beijer Ref CEO, Per Bertland, said the company was a great fit.

Founded in 1923, Patton has always had a strong local presence before expanding to Thailand and India. Bertland described the Patton buy as a key accquisition.

“Patton is an established company with a long tradition and a strong growth potential in its markets. The company eminently fits our profile,” he said.

Bicket stressed that the Patton product range is very much still alive, along with the SCM Frigo CO2 transcritical chillers.

While Beijer Ref already had a presence in 32 countries, the company’s focus was on strengthening its position in Asia.

From 2005 to 2014, the Beijer Ref Group has reported average annual growth of 19.2

per cent. During the latest five-year period, operating profit has increased by 12.6 per cent per annum on average.

Beijer Ref aims to further strengthen its position as the leading operator in Europe and to establish itself as a global operator. The objective is to grow faster than the market.

Its most recent expansion plans have focused on Asia with the acquisition of RNA Engineering & Trading, which has its head office in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Local appointments announced

Beijer Ref Australia general manager, Craig Bicket, has formally announced the appointment of local state managers.

The company’s 2IC and Queensland state manager is John McCarrey and the New South Wales state manager is Ashley Joiner.

Andrew Galliano has been appointed Victorian state manager while Darren Bromley is state manager for South Australia.

Beijer Ref has four joint venture operations in Albury (VIC), Perth (WA), Rockhampton and Gladstone (QLD).

In December, Sameer Handa was appointed managing director of Beijer Ref Australasia.

Handa was Group CEO with Patton for 17 years and under his leadership the company expanded its presence in Australia, the Middle East and South East Asia.

We are in the midst of creating one team with an organisational structure that has a strong focus on engineering

Quarter Report

We ended 2015 with a strong fourth quarter, with continued positive development for Toshiba and for the Southern Europe and Africa market regions. The sales increase for Beijer Ref amounted to 13 per cent, of which four per cent is organic and nine per cent consists of acquisitions. Operating profit increased to SEK 134M – an increase of 16 per cent compared with the corresponding period in 2014 and a figure which means that we make our highest annual profit ever.

Spain strong in Southern EuropeSouthern Europe is our most important market region and I am pleased that the strong demand in the region is maintained. In the fourth quarter, both Italy and France did well and especially Spain enjoyed a positive development. Africa’s stable development also continues. In the fourth quarter, the Nordic markets were slightly weaker compared with the corresponding quarter in the previous year. Apart from sales in the stronger market in Southern Europe, the positive development for Toshiba’s sales is due to successful product launches. We have the sole right for the distribution of Toshiba’s air-conditioning units and heat pumps in eleven countries in Europe.

Acquisitions in the United Kingdom and ThailandIn November, Beijer Ref signed an agreement to acquire the remaining 56 per cent of the shares in the refrigeration wholesale company, HRP Ltd, which has 15 branches in the United Kingdom. Since its acquisition of Carrier’s refrigeration wholesale operation in Europe and South Africa in 2009, Beijer Ref has owned 44 per cent of HRP. With HRP as a complement to the Group’sexisting UK refrigeration wholesalers, Dean & Wood and RW Refrigeration, we consolidate our position in the United Kingdom.

This also strengthens its position in Europe. HRP will be included in Beijer Ref’s accounts in 2016. Since our acquisition of Patton in spring 2015, we have owned 60 per cent of the shares in the Thai

company, PattonAero, which manufactures chillers, evaporators and condensers. In December, we acquired the remaining 40 per cent of the shares in the company. With its own manufacturing unit in Asia, this becomes another step forward in the development of Beijer Ref’s OEM activity.

Important steps for eco-friendly refrigeration technologyAt the end of October, we received its first order for eco-friendly refrigeration systems through its subsidiary, Patton, in New Zealand. The refrigeration installation was manufactured by our Italian company, SCM Frigo, and installed in a leading food chain in New Zealand during the fourth quarter. This first order for eco-friendly refrigeration technology in Oceania is in line with our strategy to be a part of the changeover to eco-friendly refrigeration technology with its own manufacturing and, as a result, to contribute to more eco-friendly refrigeration installations.

During the fourth quarter, were given the opportunity, through our Dutch refrigeration wholesalers, Coolmark and Uniechemie, to participate in a pilot project, initiated by a research team which had developed a new propane-based technology for more energyefficient and eco-friendly refrigeration installations and which had sought to work in collaboration with us. The concept has been successfully launched in a leading food chain in Europe under the Triple Aqua brand. The interest is increasing and deliveries are also made to other customers.

Beijer Ref’s Board of Directors proposes an increased dividend of SEK 5.25 (5.00). I am pleased with these positive events and a record profit. With a satisfactory fourth quarter and a new strong year for Beijer Ref, I look forward towards a year which is at least as exciting in 2016.
