Teflon is a fluorinated thermoplastic with outstanding thermal, physical, and electrical

properties.. Teflon is generally restricted to applications requiring its special charac-

teristics because its basic resin and processing costs are relatively High. Teflon is

especially suitable for internal wiring-soldering applications where insulation

melt back is a specific problem. Teflon wiring products are outstanding in their

resistance to oil, oxidation, heat, sunlight , and flame; and also in their ability to remain

flexible at low temperatures. They have excellent resistance to ozone, water, alcohol,

gasoline, acids, alkalis, aromatic hydrocarbons, and solvents

THE ADVANTAGES OF FIBER OPTIC COMMUNICATIONS OVER METALLIC SYSTEMS

C o r eThis is the boundary zone of the fiber. Its function is to provide a different refractiveindex at the core interface in order to cause reflection within the core so that thelightwaves are transmitted down the fiber.

Coat ingCoatings are usually multi-layers of plastic applied to absorb shock and provide extrafiber protection. These buffer coatings are available from 250 microns to 1000microns. The buffer coatings on optical fibers are commercially available in eithermechanically strippable or chemically strippable form.

Fiber SizeThe size of an optical fiber is commonly referred to be the outer diameter of its coreand cladding. Example: 50/125 indicates a fiber with a core of 50 microns, and claddingof 125 microns. Coating is typically not referred to since it is not involved in the actualtransmission of light, and is usually removed when joining or connecting fibers.A MICRON (uM) IS EQUAL TO ONE MILLIONTH OF A METER. 25 MICRONS AREEQUAL TO 1/1000 OF AN INCH. A SHEET OF PAPER IS APPROXIMATELY 25MICRONS THICK.

Fiber TypesFiber can be identified by the type of paths that the lightwave rays, or modes, travelwithin the fiber core. There are two types of multiple pathway fibers, or multimodefibers, step index and graded index, and one category of single mode fiber (seeFig.#2).

FIBER OPTIC CABLE

Step index multimode fiber derives its name from the sharp step like difference in therefractive or reflective index of the core and the cladding. Common step index fibershave core diameters of 100, 200, and 300 microns.

For short distance applications, 3,000 ft. or less and low data-rate applications, astep index multimode fiber is a cost effective and efficient answer to data transmis-sion.

In graded index multimode fiber the lightwave rays are also guided down the fiberin multiple pathways. But unlike step index fiber, a graded index core contains manylayers of glass, each with a lower index of refraction as you go outward from the axis.

The effect of this grading is that lightwave rays are speeded up in the outer layers,to match those rays going the shorter pathway directly down the axis.

The result is that a graded index fiber equalizes the propagation times of the variousmodes so that data can be sent over a much longer distance and at higher ratesbeforelight pulses start to overlap and become less distinguishable at the receiver end.

Graded index fibers are commercially available with core diameters of 50, 62.5, 85and 100 microns.

The single mode fiber allows only a single lightwave ray or mode to be transmitteddown the core. This virtually eliminates any distortion due to the light pulsesoverlapping .

The core of a single mode or monomode fiber is extremely small, approximately fiveor six microns.

The monomode fiber has higher capacity and capability than either of the twomultimode types. For example, monomode fiber can handle a 16 channel videosystem for 15 miles without a repeater.

CABLE STRUCTURELoose BufferCurrently two general cable constructions are employed to contain the optical fibers.The first is a loose buffer tube construction where the fiber is contained in a gel-filled plastic tube that has an inner diameter considerable larger than the fiber. Thisprovides a high level of isolation for the fiber from exterior mechanical forces presenton the cable. For multifiber cables, a number of these tubes (each containing a singlefiber) are combined with the necessary longitudinal strength members.Note: For multifiber (4 through 18 fibers) and “multipurpose” loose tube cables, abreakout kit or assembly is required for attaching single fiber connections.

Tight BufferThe second cable construction is a tight buffer design, such as that used in BeldenBitLite products. In this cable a thicker buffer coating is placed directly on the fiberwhich is concentrically surrounded by a Kevlar layer for added strength andprotection. An outer jacket then completes the structure. The result is a lightweightand highly flexible fiber optic cable.

Breakout StyleBreakout cable is a refined form of tight buffer construction. In breakout cable, atightly buffered fiber is surrounded by Kevlar and a jacket, typically PVC. Thesesingle-fiber subunit elements are then covered by a common sheath to form thebreakout cable. This “cable within a cable” offers the advantages of direct, simplifiedconnector attachment, and installation.

Each construction has inherent advantages. The table on the next page has a briefcomparison.

1. The transmitted signals are not distorted by any form of outside electronic,magnetic, or radio frequency interference.

2. Completely immune to lightning or high voltage interference.

3. Optical fibers emit no radiation, which ideally suits them for tougher standardsin computer applications.

4. Because optical signals do not require grounding connections, The transmitterand receiver are electrically isolated and free of ground loop problems.

5. Safe in hazardous or flammable environments.No chance of terminal-to-terminal ground potential shifts.Safe from sparking and shock.

6. In digital computing, telephone, and video broadcast systems, the high signalbandwidth of fibers means increased channel repeaters.

7. Extremely low attenuation rates result in longer cable runs and fewer repeaters.

8. A single conductor fiber optic cable weighs about 9 lbs. per 1,000 ft. comparedto coaxial cable which weighs about 80 lbs. per 1,000 ft. (about 9 times more).

9. This lighter weight and smaller diameter means easier installation requiring lessduct space.

10. Fiber optic systems are immune to electronic "bugging", because they must bephysical tapped to extract data.

11. Before fiber optics, Telephone companies used two pairs of copper wire to carry24 two way conversations. Now, 1344 two way voice transmissions can beeasily handled on one pair of fiber optic cable.
