Our standardized modular design concept

was formed with a simple goal in mind: to

create a solar power plant, that delivers

The solar power plant unit operates at a

DC system voltage of 1,500VDC thereby

enabling further reductions to system and

maintenance costs. In addition to system

efficiency, the 3.0 MegaWattBlock Hybrid

also sets standards in terms of energy reli-

ability by combining solar energy with fuel-

based energy sources and a battery storage

system. The inverters of the Power Condi-

tioning Unit achieve a staggering availability

rate, controlled and monitored by BELEC-

TRIC‘s Real-time Management system. Low

The MegaWattBlock Hybrid combines the proven MegaWattBlock with a gas or oil fired power plant, the Genset

Power Unit (GPU), and a battery based energy storage system, the Energy Buffer Unit (EBU). Core of the hybrid

power plant is the smart Hybrid Controller. It manages the different energy sources in line with load demands and

grid requirements. The MegaWattBlock Hybrid exceeds the capability of conventional power plants in relation to

ancillary grid services as real-time function.

The EBU is able to store and deliver solar power at any time. That way the MegaWattBlock Hybrid achieves the

highest level of solar energy use - day and night. The EBU enables the hybrid power plant to operate a grid and

to turn off the GPU when it is not needed for power supply. Thus, the MegaWattBlock Hybrid hits the best power

reliability at maximum fuel economy. Furthermore the EBU provides an additional grid service that conventional

power plants do not realize in this quality. With the capability of the EBU to provide its full power capacity from

naught to hundred percent within one second it stabilizes the connected grid at high load variations.

Like the MegaWattBlock the MegaWattBlock Hybrid is equipped to operate under extreme weather environments.

The modular system design of the 2000kVA power unit provides state-of-the-art power plant technology scalable

for energy projects in all utility and off-grid applications.

To match customer requirements the MegaWattBlock Hybrid can be delivered without either GPU or EBU.

The MegaWattBlock Hybrid is a further development of the established MegaWattBlock unit.

The power plant is designed for an efficient use of solar energy in utility-scale business.

Photovoltaics doesn’t need any fuel to generate electrical power. However, this volatile

energy source is dependent of the sun irradiation.

based genset into the MegaWattBlock, the

Genset Power Unit. Thereby our AC power

block generates continuous electricity at

day and night. The Hybrid Controller

regulates the power generation with regards

to load requirements of the grid and

the availability of solar power. The solar

energy production has priority because

of its fuelless operation. A high use of the

photovoltaic capacities will reduce the

operation costs of the hybrid power plant.

Coverage of daily load profiles with hybrid power

The 3.0 MegaWattBlock Hybrid is equipped with the

BELECTRIC Energy Buffer Unit (EBU) to provide the

power of the sun even in the night. The unit helps to

bridge the ramp-up and ramp-down periods of the

solar power generator and the genset unit. More than

ever before, the growth of renewables, the rising

price of energy and an increase in distributed grid

tied and off-grid generation is driving the need to

store electricity.

The EBU supports the PCU to provide advanced ancil-

lary services to the grid. It is designed for flexibility in

use and long lifetime. Proven by its design the EBU is

the most reliable energy storage system on the market.

Module technology

The 3.0 MegaWattBlock Hybrid is designed for thin-film module technology

from First Solar, which ensures stable performance even at low light and

especially under hot climate conditions for an operational lifetime of more

than 25 years. The self-cleaning frameless module design also reduces

soiling losses.

Substructure

The precise alignment of the Triple Support substructure makes it possible

for each pv module to be exposed equally to light. Superior space efficiency

reduces the land consumption significantly. We only use the highest quality,

heavy industrial grade components, to guarantee long durability.

Power Conditioning Unit (PCU)

The specially developed PCU for hybrid application includes

two ProSolar Inverters from General Electric and a transformer

station. The inverter system is optimized for the use of thin-

film module technologies and is characterized by the high level of

system efficiency. The built-in PID protection device reduces the

module degradation effect. A typical grid shows many voltage devia-

tions produced by different power loads. The dynamic reactive power

capability of the PCU stabilizes the grid voltage - day and night. The BELECTRIC 3.0 MegaWattBlock Hybrid is a hybrid power generation unit which consists of the most advanced

components on the market, ensuring a 24/7 power supply. The standardized unit is developed for the construction

of hybrid power plants in 2000kVA steps.

The block design includes innovations like the Triple Support substructure of the solar power plant, specially

designed for First Solar thin-film modules, which speeds up the construction process, increases the space efficiency

and saves raw material. Another essential part of the system is the 1,500VDC technology, using the full bandwidth

defined by EU’s Low Voltage Directive. This ensures lower costs in cabling, power conversion, and leads to greater

conversion efficiencies. The state-of-the-art Genset Power Unit and advanced Energy Buffer Unit allow the smart

Hybrid Controller a continuous power supply during day and night - all year.

Hybrid Energy Unit

The MegaWattBlock Hybrid is equipped with multiple energy

sources: the Genset Power Unit (GPU) with its Fuel Tank Unit

(FTU), the Energy Buffer Unit (EBU) and the Hybrid

Controller. The EBU and GPU ensure a 24/7 power supply

with the highest level of availability. The Hybrid Controller

analyses the grid access point and regulates the energy

flow of the plant accordingly. It is responsible for manag-

ing and optimizing the interaction of the solar power

plant with the GPU and the EBU. Voltage sensors and

software algorithms detect emerging grid requirements

and react automatically. The Real-time Management system

delivers advanced monitoring of the hybrid power plant.

Complemented by sophisticated features, the 3.0 MegaWattBlock Hybrid improves solar energy utilization and minimizes power generation costs. With this power

plant unit we not only improve solar power production, but introduce a system, that faces the challenges of a 24/7 hybrid operation.

HIGH TEMPERATURE STABILITYThe advanced thin film solar module technology supplies greater stability and performance in hot as well as humid conditions than crystalline silicon technologies. The excellent temperature coefficient lets the system produce a higher energy yield during peak energy production periods.

ANTI DEGRADATION DEVICEEliminates physical degradation processes like Potential Induced Degradation (PiD) and TCO corrosion which causes yield losses. A dynamically controlled voltage offset in relation to ground potential solves the issue.

LOW LIGHT PERFORMANCEThe thin film solar modules produce significantly more energy during low level light conditions than crystalline silicon modules. This advantage delivers greater production in cloudy weather conditions and during morning and evening hours.

ACTIVE LIGHTNING SHIELDThe active lightning shield reduces the risk of a lightning strike dramatically. The patented technology works also in the night when the solar power plant does not produce energy.

DYNAMIC REACTIVE POWER COMPENSATIONThe reactive power compensation not only controls the feed-in of solar power to the grid, it also supplies reactive power on demand to stabilize the electrical grid - day and night. This ancillary service helps to integrate more renewable power sources into the existing distribution grid.

POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE RAMP RATE CONTROLFluctuating solar irradiation can disrupt the power grid. The Ramp Rate Controller smoothly adjusts exported solar power (AC) to avoid rampant power slopes. This allows a special adaption to grid regulation scenarios and to support grid opera-tors in the daily operation. The EBU of the 3.0 MegaWattBlock Hybrid² helps to bridge the ramp-up and -down periods.

CLOUD TRACKERClouds can cause fluctuating power generation. BELECTRIC works on a solution to forecast the movement of clouds and the corresponding impact to solar power generation. The Tracker predicts abrupt downward slopes of the feed-in AC power and delivers a forward-looking reaction.

HOT CLIMATE OPTION Specially designed components allow the power plant to work under hot climate conditions up to55°C (130°F). The whole system can be equipped with desert proofed components (i.e. special ventilationsystems for dusty environments and air conditioned electrical chambers).
