A European club with an Irish accent

Every GAA club outside Ireland is born of necessity. An Irish emigrant needs a reminder

of home. A player needs an energy outlet. An outsider needs to surround themselves with

friends. Belgium GAA was born and bred of these needs.

Located in Brussels, in the centre of Europe, it benefits from a steady flow of

members. They are divided into two categories: those straight off the boat from

Ireland, or those non-Irish, drawn by friends, family, colleagues or merely word

of mouth, to a foreign club providing a foreign sport in a foreign land.

So welcome to Belgium GAA! This is only a short introduction to the club (for

the full experience you need to spend time with us, at camogie/hurling/

football/ladies football training, social events or tournaments), but hopefully the

message will be clear: Belgium GAA is not just a club, it is a community.

St. Patrick’s Day

The annual St. Patrick’s Day festival is

a huge event for our club, in terms of

fundraising and recruitment. The best

way to demonstrate the Irish spirit is to

see it in action in Parc 50e, with

displays of hurling, camogie, mens’ and

ladies football, kids games, music,

good food and great company.

This is followed in the evening with

more festivities - Irish music, song and

dance.

Of course, sport is what brings us all together.

Even non-playing members came to the club

because of a family connection or a friend

who just wouldn’t stop talking about GAA.

We train in heat, rain and cold. We travel

huge distances to play tournaments. We win

and lose. We celebrate and commiserate. And

we love it.

But that’s not all. There is more to Belgium GAA than just playing. We have to

develop and ensure that our club continues on into the future. This is done

through such activities as fundraising events, social occasions, assisting the

underage GAA teams, and generally creating a network that is invaluable to all.

There is no better way for a young Irish emigrant to find friends, accommodation

or employment than to get involved with Belgium GAA. The more the merrier!
