emotion that can spur us

toward God and others

But when feeling lonely

becomes a constant part

of our lives it can turn

into a problem But once

we let the Lord meet our

deepest need for emo-

tional connection we can

begin to work on our

interpersonal relation-

ships In this study

youll learn about Gods

heart for you regarding

companions and youll

discover helpful tips for

making friends

Dear Heart of God

In my anguish I cried to

the LORD and He an-

swered by setting me

free (Psalm 1185)

It is possible for people

to become so accus-

tomed to their bondage

that they resist efforts to

free them The Hebrews

had been slaves in Egypt

for four hundred years

Slavery meant that they

were not free to do Gods

will or to go where they

wanted Moses had come

to tell the Israelites how

they could experience

freedom yet they were

more concerned about

the reaction of their task-

masters than they were

about pleasing God For

them to be free would

mean that the pharaoh

they were serving would

be angry It would mean

that the Egyptians they

had served all their lives

might attack them Free-

dom from their slavery

did not seem to be worth

the hardships they would

inevitably endure When

God sets out to free us

there will often be a

price we will have to

pay Grief can be a terri-

ble form of bondage yet

we can become comfort-

able with it We can

grow so comfortable

with fear that we dont

know how to live with-

out it As destructive as

our sinful habits and

lifestyle might be we

may prefer living with

the familiar rather than

being freed to experience

the unknown We may

recognize the harmful

influence of a friend but

choose to reject Gods

will rather than offend

our friend As incredible

as it seems the Israelites

were angry at Moses for

disrupting the life of

slavery to which they

had grown accustomed

Have you been lulled

into a comfortable rela-

tionship with your bond-

age Do you fear change

more than you fear God

Are you willing to allow

God to do what is neces-

sary in order to free

There is a lot God is say-

ing to me about being

free He sung a Freedom

song over me He

declared ldquoYou are freerdquo

song about deliverance

You know you are free

when you can tell your

testimony of how God

has broken your chains

of sin and released you

from bondage When you

can tell your friends and

family I must go now

and follow Jesus You

know you are free when

the darkness of that place

you once were is behind

you and you can feel it

but the calling of the

Hope of Glory is before

you Jesus

I received a vision and

asked God for clarifica-

tion He showed me a

person bound by dark-

ness and in a dark room

with no windows but a

door God sent His Son

Jesus to deliver this per-

son and their chains were

broken and fell off of

them and they were free

Jesus opened the door to

the bright and wonderful

glory The glory illumi-

nated the room but there

was a small dark spot in

the corner The person

hid in the dark place

and comfortable pain I

God even came to the

door to call their name

and they would not come

into the Light of Glory

God called out My

beloved you are free no

longer bound come to

me and see I sought the

LORD and He answered

me He delivered me

from all my fears

(Psalm 344)

I asked God for more

clarification of this vi-

sion I prayed for those

that were bound by de-

pression pain shame

and fear I did not know I

was really praying for

myself because I was in

a place where I found

myself not willing to tell

my story because I was

more concerned with

what people thought I

would tell the clean testi-

mony of Gods goodness

but not the story of my

sinful betrayal and yet

He still loves me and

calls me into His glory

My heart is burning with

the passion for freedom

like never before Your

glory story has the power

to unlock someonersquos

Ingredients

12 cup soy sauce

14 cup cider vinegar

2 tablespoons honey

2 tablespoons canola oil

10 large mushrooms cut in half

2 green onions minced

3 skinless boneless chicken breast halves cut into chunks

12 pound sliced thick cut bacon cut in half

1 (8 ounce) can pineapple chunks drained

Skewers

Directions

1 In a large bowl mix the soy sauce cider vinegar honey canola

oil and green onions

2 Place the mushrooms and chicken into the mixture and stir to coat

Cover and marinate in the refrigerator at least 1 hour

3 Preheat grill for high heat

4 Remove the mushrooms and chicken from the marinate and shake off the

excess Pour the marinate into a small saucepan and bring to a boil over

high heat Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer for 10 minutes set

aside

5 Wrap the chicken chunks with bacon and thread onto skewers so that

the bacon is secured Alternate with mushroom halves and pineapple

chunks

6 Lightly oil the grill grate Arrange skewers on the prepared grill Cook

15 to 20 minutes brushing occasionally with remaining soy sauce

mixture until bacon is crisp and chicken juices run clear

Last month we began our

Suffering Savior series

with ldquoWhyrdquo Jesus suf-

fered for us and we con-

cluded that it was be-

cause He loved us Now

I eagerly continue the

with how Jesusrsquo

ldquoModeledrdquo suffering

In the last few days of

Jesusrsquo life found in Matt

26-27 Mark 14-15 Luke

22-23 and John 18-19()

we see the Son of Man

revealing and sharing

with His disciples and

people the very purpose

of His life In the synop-

tic gospels the Son of

Man was portrayed as

one who lived a lowly

and humbled existence

(Luke 958) One who

came to suffer many

things be rejected die

YET rise again (Mark

831) One who would

come again in glory

(Mark 838) As well as

one that came to serve

versus be served as He

gave His life for a

ransom for many (Mark

1045) In fact when-

ever you see ldquoSon of

Manrdquo in Daniel and

throughout the Gospels

think of the theme Suf-

fering and Glorified

There are many similari-

ties within the gospels of

Jesusrsquo last twenty-four

hours and how He mod-

eled the suffering con-

tained therein but briefly

follow this non exhaus-

tive list of a perfectly

modeled sufferinghellip

-He reclined at the table

for dinner as He encour-

aged others (Matt 267

-He gave thanks and

sang hymns for His bro-

ken body and poured

-When Jesus did cry out

it was as He looked only

towards His Father to

whom only He commit-

ted His mind body and

I share all that to say

from the beginning of

time Jesus knew that

Hersquod be purposed to

come to earth live suf-

fer die and be glorified

and He modeled it per-

fectly Not only was His

suffering endured for the

cost of our sins but it

was endured as a model

for us as to how we are

to take on the tests and

trials of life Jesus hav-

ing understood that His

suffering was at hand

wasnrsquot restless He actu-

ally relaxed at a table for

food and fellowship He

praised and sang thanks-

giving for the suffering

soon to come When

feeling troubled in His

spirit He resorted always

and only to His Father

first in prayer He will-

ingly endured the stripes

spit slaps sweat scorn

and sorrow for you and I

with the hope of joy

Furthermore He com-

mitted His every word

deed and breathe to the

Father even when He

felt alone in this world

Family I encourage us to

not simply read the gos-

pel accounts as marvel-

ous parables but as mod-

eled perfection for us to

follow when we are in

the face of tests and tri-

als Peter tells us in

I Peter 412-16

surprised at the fiery

ordeal that has come on

you to test you as though

something strange were

happening to you 13 But

rejoice inasmuch as you

participate in the suffer-

ings of Christ so that

you may be overjoyed

when his glory is re-

vealed 14 If you are in-

sulted because of the

name of Christ you are

blessed for the Spirit of

glory and of God rests

on you 15 If you suffer it

should not be as a mur-

derer or thief or any

other kind of criminal or

even as a meddler 16 However if you suffer

as a Christian do not be

ashamed but praise God

that you bear that

namerdquo

Though Christ suffered

for righteousness sake

therersquos a lesson for us to

learn during our suffer-

ing The reason for our

suffering may be because

of our dedicated life and

love for the Name of

Jesus It may be because

we are experiencing the

loving rebuke of a chas-

tening Father It could

be because we are pres-

ently reaping that which

wersquove once sown Or it

could simply be that God

has us in the forging fire

as to purify us and make

us strong Far too often

we Christians are trou-

bled in our spirits to the

point of spiritual conten-

tion when we face tests

and trials as if wersquove

forgotten that our current

sorrow and suffering will

soon be transferred and

transformed into glory

and joy

Jesus said to His disci-

ples in John 1620

ldquoVerily verily I say unto

you That ye shall weep

and lament but the

world shall rejoice and

ye shall be sorrowful but

your sorrow shall be

turned into joyrdquo

You see Jesus endured

His cross despising the

suffering and shame be-

cause He knew it was the

same cross that required

suffering that would

bring Him joy and His

Father glory The writer

of Hebrews 210 tells us

that Jesusrsquo perfection

was obtained through

suffering James tells us

that through the perse-

verance of trials perfec-

tioncompleteness is ob-

tained that we may lack

nothing Jesus taking

on sin on our behalf was

made sin and became

imperfect through suf-

fering however He was

perfected God gives us

numbered days and mo-

mentarily light afflictions

to allow us to fellowship

in the suffering of His

Son so that our charac-

ters can reflect Christrsquos


and we be perfected in

His likeness when our

suffering is completed

sufferings arenrsquot worthy

to be compared to the

eternal glory that awaits

us Jesus knew that He

believed it thus He mod-

eled it

Brothers and Sisters

Jesus bore His sorrow

and suffering so that you

and I could be reconciled

back to God and one day

perfected He and His

Father knew that we who

believed and accepted

Jesus would too need to

pick up our cross and

follow Him so Jesus

lovingly modeled suffer-

ing that would result in

His joy and Godrsquos glory

for our benefit He did-

nrsquot stress during His test

and trials He sat back

and chilled He didnrsquot

have a pity party He

praised sang and lifted

up the Name of His Fa-

ther He didnrsquot buckle to

the ground in defeat or

run from the Father in

pursuit of lsquoself-

happinessrsquo He bent His

knees in prayer searching

for and submitting to His

Fatherrsquos will He didnrsquot

fight the callingpurpose

placed on His life He

willingly and eagerly

accepted it like a good

Warrior despite the cost

with a God centered fo-

cus so His Father would

get the Glory He didnrsquot

utter bitterness and blas-

phemies as He ldquothought

desiredrdquo His Christian

life to be easy He com-

mitted His breath fears

sorrows praises pa-

tience concerns and

cryrsquos to His Father with

His head lifted kneersquos

bent arms open and

trust and confidence in

ONLY HIS FATHER

every single time right

until the very last Our

Suffering Savior mod-

eled for us with perfec-

tion the way we as sin-

ners will one day have

Godrsquos glory revealed in

us as we enjoy our eter-

nal joy

Whatever cross yoursquore

persecuted for kicking

butt for the Kingdom and

going hard for Jesus

growing pains on the job

in your marriage with

the kids in your body in

your pockets because of

unreleased pain the past

whatever it may be

donrsquot resent the suffering

because itrsquos the transfor-

mation of suffering that

produces the joy and

glory Keep fighting the

good fight of faith as

I Tim 612 tells us so

that as we struggle in the

present our eyes may be

fixed beyond our situa-

tion and on the eternal

It doesnrsquot matter what

your temporary sorrows

sufferings tests or trials

may have been yester-

day today or tomorrow

What does matter is the

fact and reality that they

are all being divinely

allowed and ordered as

to strengthen your inti-

macy with the Father

provide you fellowship

with the Son and in-

crease character within

and relationships with

people on earth so that

God gets the glory Our

suffering isnrsquot about us

itrsquos about God Jesus

didnrsquot endure for Him-

self He did it to glorify

God and reconcile us

The same is true of us

our suffering isnrsquot about

us itrsquos simply so God

can get the glory as we

share the story of how

He sustains(ed) us So

please letrsquos model Jesusrsquo

likeness as we bear our

crosses so that we may

like Him one day soon

obtain our joy and per-

fection for eternity

Jesus perfectly model

how to endure suffering

and persecution pleas-

ingly by a steady out-

poor of love until His

last breath Yes Is that

what we are called to


imitate Yes Did Jesus

tell the church Smyrna

that theyrsquod receive the

crown of life if they en-

dured suffering faith-

fully even to the point of

death (Rev 210) Yes

So if we want the perfect

prototype for enduring

the hardships of life we

must study the life of our

gracious and gloried
