The month of May brings flowers, hopefully more rain showers, and that wonderful day for moms – Mother’s Day! There will be buffets offered at restaurants, perhaps a rose handed to mom, and stores will fill their ads with trinkets and charms that lovingly say “#1 mom” or some other sentiment – which I’ve told my kids never to buy me! I personally don’t care for anything with “mom” written on it to be worn around my neck or dangle from my wrist. But that’s just me! What about you?

This month you’ll enjoy Miranda Bradley’s article on other things NOT to do for mom on Mother’s Day. It will make you laugh until you almost cry…it’s so funny…but true! Our feature story is about a young mom of four children, two with very special needs. Her life as a mom is a difficult one for sure, but

her children bring her such joy – she thrives at the “job” of being a mother. If you know a mother with difficult circumstances, share Venerly Torres’ story with her. Practical Parenting is a must-read this month, reminding us all to slow down and enjoy our children, even if we do think sometimes that they will never grow up!

We hope you find time to read the entire issue cover to cover. We’ve got stories to entertain, offer advice, and simply encourage. Our hometown hero this month is an area fallen officer, Jaime Padron. Be sure to look through the calendar and movie reviews, for fun ideas for the family this month!

Happy Mother’s Day to all you moms! And to all you dads…your day is coming soon! Enjoy…

May’s Student Star Athlete!Bethany

Bethany Brunell (second from left) is a junior

at Moody High School. Her sport is powerlifting and she excels in it.

She narrowly missed making it to Region-als her freshman year and vowed to go to state as a sophomore. She trained year around at ExplosiveU and at school after hours, just to make it to state as a sophomore and placed 4th in her weight class.

This past year she again worked tirelessly, and this past weekend placed 2nd at State as a junior in Cor-pus Christi Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Association. She has exceeded her best lifts at every meet and encourages all others to do their best also. She is a source of encouragement to all those around her whether they be competing against her or with her, always with the best and most positive attitude. She is also an honor student at Moody, a UIL aca-demic competitor, and the Moody Bearcat mascot. She also received the outstanding mascot award at cheerleader camp at Tarleton State University.

Bethany loves people and is planning to take a mis-sion trip to Japan this summer to share her love of faith and God with those most damaged by the Tsunami last year. Her love of life and courage in the face of trials (she has severe dyslexia and was schooled away from home for two years in Austin) is a testament to her outstanding character.

BOOKS:

Greg Kenton has always had a natural talent for making money -- despite the rivalry of his neighbor

Maura Shaw. Then, just before sixth grade, Greg discovers that almost every kid at school has an extra quarter or two to spend almost every day. Multiply a few quarters by a few hundred kids, and for Greg, school suddenly looks like a piggy bank. All he needs is the right hammer to crack it open. Candy and gum? Little toys? Sure, kids would love to buy stuff like that at school. But then, would teachers and the principal permit it? Not likely.

I have four kids who live at home with me and my wife. As I have stated numerous times in my articles, I love them all dearly. When I think about my life and the times that I was hurt physically growing up, with the normal injuries that come with be-ing a boy, and then the emotional injuries that come from other children during childhood, my first instinct is to jump in there and try to save my kids from injury. For instance, when my oldest son tells me the things this little bully across the street says (who is a little older than him), I literally want to go fight his battle for him. However, common sense jumps in and tells me that if I fight his battle for him with the little bully, he will never learn how to deal with bullies and know how to defend himself or fight his own battles.

When I see my kids doing things that I know will inevi-tably hurt them, like climbing a fence they will get splin-ters from, or doing tricks on a bike that I know they will get a skinned elbow or knee from, my first inclination is to run over to them. I want to tell them I love them so much and I know that they are about to skin their elbow from riding their bike the way they are riding it, “So please, just ride it normally!” But here’s the thing. I had so many skinned elbows and knees growing up; and yet, I turned out just fine. In fact, to this day, I have a tolerance for pain that the normal person just does not have. Probably because my mom let me be a boy and let me learn from my mistakes, even if it meant a little blood from time to time, an occasional visit to the emergency room, and some stitches. However, I do re-member my mom letting me watch The Brady Brunch. Although it gave me a thing for blondes (thanks to Mar-cia), I know it caused irreparable psychological dam-age from which I will never recover!

The least I can do is protect my kids from bad television and movies. Here are a few choices:

Dora the Explorer - The songs are horrible! Think about it like this. A writer for the show goes out for a long night of partying and drinking. He is hung over, eyes are bloodshot red, and he still smells like a bar when he enters the meeting where he has been as-signed to come up with a song for the Backpack char-acter to sing. He tells his buddy and coworker next to him that he has totally forgotten to come up with that song, and then all of the sudden it is his turn to get up and sing. He thinks for a second and then this comes out of his mouth, “Backpack-Backpack, Backpack-Backpack.” Yeah, you know the song I am referring to! As the crowd erupts with applause at this song, it be-comes the song they use for the Backpack character.

Reality TV - Really, any reality television show is off limits. There is no redeeming quality about watching rich people famous for absolutely nothing, driving cars regular people cannot afford, dating super models, and staying in hotel rooms where the tax costs more than most of our house payments.

Anything with Nicolas Cage in it - and I mean anything! This also extends to any voiceover animation films.

Child’s Play- I watched this movie at a sleepover at our pastor’s son’s house when I was about 12. Now I am 35 and still check my kids’ toys to make sure they are work-ing because they have batteries in them, and not because they are possessed by Satan. Really, I do. So far, I have not run across one that is possessed, but I’m still going to make sure.

Star Wars I, II, III - Talk about screwing up some-thing that was perfect! I mean, c’mon George Lucas, what were you thinking? Those were the worst movies I have ever seen. I was never a Star Wars junkie like my friend, Andrew, in college who had a Darth Vader phone and would make me ask him trivia questions about Star Wars and Star Trek before we went out to party. I am not making this up, by the way, and I do like the original Star Wars series. The only thing that would have made Star Wars I, II, III any worse would have been to cast Nicolas Cage as a character.

This is my list for right now. Stay tuned for more…

A water bearer in india had two large pots, each hung on either end of a pole that he car-ried across his neck. One of the pots had a crack along its side while the other pot was perfectly made. Its seamless craftsmanship always delivered a full portion of water at the end of the long walk from the stream to the master’s house, while the cracked pot arrived only half full.

For two years this went on daily, with the bearer deliver-ing only one and a half pots full of water to his master’s house. Of course, the perfect pot was proud of its accom-plishments; it proved to be perfect to the end for which it was made. But the poor cracked pot was ashamed of its own imperfection, and miserable that it was able to accomplish only half of what it had been made to do. Af-ter two years of what it perceived to be a bitter failure, it finally spoke to the water bearer one day, by the stream.

“I am ashamed of myself, and I want to apologize to you.”

“Why?” asked the water bearer, “What are you ashamed of?”

“I have only been able, for these past two years, to deliver half my load be-cause this crack in my side causes water to leak all the way back to your master’s house. Because of my flaws, you have to do all of this work, and you don’t get full value from your efforts,” the pot said.

The water bearer smiled wisely at the old cracked pot, and in his compassion he said, “As we re-turn to the master’s house, I want you to pay attention to the beauty along the path.”

Indeed, as they went up the hill, the old cracked pot took notice of the sun warming the beautiful wildflowers on the side of the path, and this cheered it some, but at the end of the journey home, it still felt bad because it had leaked out half its contents. Again it apologized to the water bearer for its failure.

The water bearer said to the pot, “Did you notice that there were flowers only on your side of your path, and none on the other pot’s side? That’s because I have always known about your flaw, and I took advantage of it. I planted flower seeds on your side of the path, and every day while we walk back from the stream, you’ve watered them.”

“For two years I have been able to pick these beauti-ful flowers to decorate my master’s table. Without you being just the way you are, he would not have their beauty to grace his house.”

The Busy Mom’s Perspective: “Many persons have a wrong idea of what constitutes true happiness. It is not attained through self-gratification but through fidelity to a worthy purpose.” - Helen Keller

“Definiteness of purpose is the starting point of all achievement.” - W. Clement Stone

I know that each of us have our own unique flaws. We’re all “cracked pots” (no pun intended!) But I believe that if we will allow it, our Creator will use our flaws to grace the lives of others – especially those of our children. In His great economy, nothing goes to waste and there are no damaged goods if we can only surrender ourselves to a purpose higher than our own.

As you are called to the tasks He has appointed for you, don’t be afraid of your flaws. Acknowledge them, allow Him to take advantage of them, and then you can be the cause of beauty along the pathway that He has set for you. Go out boldly knowing that in your weakness you can rely on His strength, and that in finding your purpose you will truly find the very best of yourself. The greatest gift you can give your children is a Godly example from which to learn.

We can’t be perfect, but we can be purposeful! May we have truly purpose-full lives!

Practical Parenting

i think we parents often try to rush too many things. What do you mean your 6 month old can’t speak three languages? Have you had him tested?!? Seriously, I am as guilty as any parent of rushing my kids to meet some so-called expert’s de-velopmental milestone. After five children, though, I’m starting to chill. I know they would be relieved to hear this, so don’t tell them just yet.

When my second daughter wasn’t saying more than five words by age two, I wondered if something might be wrong and consulted my pediatrician. He did a good job of not rolling his eyes at me and told me to be pa-tient. By the time she turned three, I wished she would hush, and now, at the age of nine, I tell her regularly to hush. Talking early is not an indicator of superior intelligence, but more likely a sign of the need to invest in earplugs sooner. In fact, children who grow up in bilingual homes may talk much later, but then be able to speak multiple languages. Of course, I’m not speaking from experience, unless you count Southern redneck as a language, but it’s more likely a dialect.

Potty training is a hot topic among many parents. Don’t despair if your three year old is still wearing diapers. I’m sure they will be potty trained by the time they enter high school. Again, I tried to rush my older children through potty training around the age of two. No go. A few months later, I made another run at it. One finally submitted, though I suspect it had more to do with be-ing bribed with M&Ms. The other dragged her feet until she was closer to three. That said, they both go potty independently at the ages of nine and 13.

I have two toddlers now, and both were in diapers until just recently. The older one was past the age of three before she showed any interest in bodily func-tions. She thought it quite inconvenient to stop playing, round up a parent or older sister, go to the bathroom, completely disrobe (because, of course, you can’t have any clothes on to go to the bathroom), do her busi-ness, re-dress, argue about washing her hands, finally wash her hands, then resume her playtime. What an utter waste of time! I knew enough from my previous battles in this area that forcing her too early would

only result in the need for blood pressure medication for myself. Instead, I let her take her time. Then, just before she turned three, a friend who taught a pre-school class promised to include her once a week. I seized the opportunity and played up the fact that the “big kids” in pre-school did not wear diapers. It worked like a charm. Within a week, she was out of diapers with only a few accidents. Bingo!

Another area in which I tend to rush my children is school. In our culture’s cookie-cutter approach to edu-cation, some professionals will have you believe that all children should read by age five or be relegated to the “slow” class. In fact, many children may not read until much later, but then have no problems catching up and even passing their early-reading peers. I re-member having my oldest daughter read six pages, or more, from her first grade reader each day. She would sound out each word. It was quite a laborious process, for me – not her. She’s in seventh grade now and reads Jane Austen…voluntarily. Quite a leap in ability and interest, wouldn’t you say?

As for my current first grader, I’ve reduced the number of pages we read from the phonics readers to about two a day. Instead, I have her practice sounding out words on food packages or in books she likes to read. She is more interested in real world information than the play habits of Dick and Jane. However, Whacky Wednesday or Go, Dog, Go always captures her at-tention. While older children may need help in certain subjects from time to time, they probably do not need a tutor in kindergarten. Harvard will not be impressed with their graduation rank from elementary school.

Childhood passes too quickly, at least for the par-ent, and it’s better to enjoy the days instead of rush-ing the years. Don’t pressure children to grow up before they’re ready. That time comes differently for each child. Instead of always encouraging them to do more and correcting every little mistake, let’s savor the funny lisp and mispronounced words, endure the potty training, and patiently (as possible) read the same book 50 times a day while snuggling on the couch. This time is more valuable than you may realize.

Don’t Rush Them!

In a previous published article, I discussed why water birth was a great option for making birth faster and easier. In this article, I will discuss the practical issues specific to setting up and having a water birth.

The first thing you need to do is decide how and when you will use water during your labor and birth. (This is often referred to as Hydrothera-py.) If you are giving birth in a hospital, they may have facilities that allow for hydrotherapy during labor, but few will allow women to actually give birth in the pool. When is water birth an option? How many women use water during labor in a given month? What conditions or circumstances would exclude you from using hydrotherapy in labor? How is the baby monitored in the birth pool? A facility that allows hydrotherapy in labor should be open to these questions, and have ac-curate statistics on the birth pool’s use. Even if your hospital does not offer water birth, you can still use it in early labor while you are waiting to go to the hospital. If you plan on using a birth pool at your home, you need to ask the same questions of your midwife or birth attendant. Birth centers are usually water birth specialists, so you probably just need to bring yourself.

Next, get your hands on a birth pool. Acquiring a pool is easy; many children’s pools can be used for labor, as well as your own bathtub or shower. You can also order birth pools from many places online. A good place to start is www.inhishands.com. I once had a client who bought a horse trough, because it was deep but not very big around, which is ideal for hydrotherapy. Hav-ing a deep tub also makes controlling the water temperature easier. The type of pool you choose does not matter as long as it is clean.

Don’t want to buy a big tub, or any extra equipment? Use your shower! You can get most of the benefits of hydrotherapy stand-ing in the shower. The warm water will be comforting, and the upright position will allow gravity to help your labor progress.

The water temperature should be from 86-91 degrees, which is the temperature of a pool as opposed to a typical bath. If the water is too hot, it can slow labor or cause other harmful effects such as abnormally high fetal heart rate. If the water is too cold, it can cause maternal exhaus-

tion, breathing problems for the baby, or prema-ture separation of the placenta. Use a digital thermometer or buy a floating one from a pool supply company to check the water temperature.

The temperature in the room is important, too. It should be around 80 degrees. It will feel very steamy and tropical to the people who are not in the water. Having the room temperature this warm enhances hormone levels, and helps keep the baby from becoming chilled after the birth. It is easy for mother and baby to get cold when they are soaking wet.

The effects of water immersion peak after 30 minutes in the water, and begin to “wear off” after about two hours. So getting out for an hour or two, then back in, is a good idea. While out of the birth pool, you can get some-thing to eat, use the restroom, or walk around a bit. While in the birth pool you should be able to drink water at will, just as you would be doing at a traditional birth.Jennifer Bennett is a Licensed Midwife at Avanlee Birth & Maternity Center in Killeen, Texas. Special Story by Marcy Lytle

“Give your children all the love, while you can.” These are the words by which Venerly Torres lives her life. She is 24 years old, married to Luis Torres, and is a mom to four children. Venerly is originally from Puerto Rico, but has lived in Texas for the past five years. She shared with us what a typical day is like for her:

“My day starts at 6:00 a.m. I get ready for work…and give my son his medication through his G-tube. My husband gives Emma her medications when she wakes up. Afterwards, I wake Briana and Gaby up and prepare them for school. I head off to work (three days a week) and Tues-days and Fridays are appointment days for both Emma and Louis. When I get back from work my husband usually has dinner done. He gives me a report on how the kids were during the day, tells me if there were any events (seizures, or how many nebulizer treatments Louis and Emma needed), and he will also inform me of stats on both kids and respiration rate. Then I sit down with the girls while they share their day, how it went, what they did, etc. We then sit and eat din-ner, always as a family. After having dinner I give them a break and then it’s homework time. At 8:00 they’ll have to take a shower, and the kids are usually in bed by 9:00. Before going to bed I’ll place Louis’s meds through his G-tube and Emma also receives her medicines.”

Two of Venerly’s four kids live with disabilities, which makes her job as mom very hard, “es-pecially with their condition…not knowing what can happen any given day,” shares Venerly. Bri-ana is 9 years old, in 3rd grade, and she loves to sing and dance! She wants to be a doctor when she grows up. Gabriela is 7 years old, in 1st grade, and is very energetic. She loves animals and wants to be a veterinarian. Emma is 3 years old (almost 4!). She has chronic lung disease, but her mom says, “Even on her worst days, she still manages to be sweet and smile.” Emma has experienced numerous hospitaliza-tions, and is about to undergo a bronchioscopy this month. The youngest Torres child is Louis

– a 2 year old miracle child. He was born with congenital pulmonary lymphangiectasia, suffers from seizures, and is fed through a G-tube. “He is such a fighter,” says his mom. “I have learned so much from him. It’s amazing to see how far he has come. The doc-tors don’t have a prognosis on him because most kids born with this ill-ness die. Basically, he gets supportive treat-ment as needed. It’s hard not being able to control your child’s health.”

Briana and Gabriela help when asked, and are usually good about understanding why their family cannot go to certain places or do cer-tain things. Their mom states, “I feel that they deserve so much more than what I can allow them to do or have.” However, Venerly states that her children give her strength to get up in the morning, to go to work, or to take them to appointments, or to the hospital. “Louis is such an inspiration. If he has fought and has been able to continue, why can’t I do the same?” she says. She knows that her children with dis-abilities have a shorter lifespan than other chil-dren, so she relies heavily on faith. “I believe God has a reason for everything.”

Fear is hard to deal with for this mother of four. She says, “I try not to think of bad stuff and I try to look at the positive things that surround me.” She says not many can relate to her situ-ation, and it’s hard to express herself to others about what she deals with on a daily basis. She appreciates the support of family, who give her a place to “vent.” She works as an orthodontic assistant and states Dr. Barron and Dr. Solo-mon are “great bosses,” as they understand her situation and work with Venerly, so she can be there when her kids need her.

A good day? When no one is sick. “We can all play and laugh together,” shares Venerly. How-ever, there is the constant frustration of not be-

ing able to control how sick the two younger chil-dren get so quickly. A bad day? When one of her children has to be hospitalized. “It’s hard and sad having to divide your time between your kids and not feel like you are leaving one or the other behind.” And the greatest joy for this mom? She says it’s being able to show her kids how to be compassionate, humble, loving, friendly and re-spectful…and to persevere in life. “When I see these traits manifested in my children, I know I have done something right,” Venerly says.

Venerly herself has some awesome desires for the future. “I would like to start a foundation for kids and families with children that have any type of lung disease or lymphatic problems. I would like to do support groups and hope-fully be able to do some type of financial as-sistance. The reason for this is because when Louis was discharged from the NICU back in May 2010 I had to stop working, and my hus-band was not able to find a job. We called and contacted all the foundations that had to do with Louis’s condition and not one offered financial help; they just donated to research. We had to move in with my sister for two months, all six of us living in one bedroom, plus all Louis’ medical equipment! I want to make a difference. I will find a way to somehow....”

Finally, BCF asked Venerly Torres what a “per-fect” Mother’s Day would look like for her. Her answer included things most moms love: a spa, shopping, nails and hair done, and a nice din-ner with the family. Of course, at the end of the day she hopes for that elusive relaxation time after the kids are put to bed…and a little time to do something for herself!

i will never forget my first Mother’s Day. Not because it was a memo-rable, heartwarming experience – far from it. Thankfully, my wonderful hubby picked up on what a big deal this annual event is for us moms. So, get out your laptops, gentlemen, and get ready to take notes. Because I’m about to help you succeed at Mother’s Day. Your wives can thank me later.

I had waited my entire young adult life to become a mother. As a woman with health problems prior to marriage, I wasn’t quite sure I could even con-ceive. So, welcoming my son into this world was a truly magical event for me, just three months before Mother’s Day, too. As I looked into his angelic little face, I wondered what wonderful treasures awaited me the coming March. I was finally part of that adored group of ladies people call moms. I couldn’t wait.

Tip Number One: We say it doesn’t matter. But it does. Mother’s Day matters. Period.

I awoke that morning expecting something. Any-thing. But there were no flowers. No breakfast in bed. No special card selected by my husband from my firstborn (and so far only) child. “That’s okay,” I thought. “He’s probably saving up his big surprise for later.” But as the day dragged on, I continued to encounter disappointments.

When I was a child, mothers in the church con-gregation were each given a rose or a flower of some kind upon entering the sanctuary. I

eagerly waited for when we would arrive at the church and such a gift would be bestowed upon me. But nothing came.

Tip Number Two: Flowers are always a good bet, but a thoughtful gesture is always more appreciated.

Chagrinned though I was, I still held out hope for a special lunch at my favorite restaurant in our hometown. It had kind of been our special place, where we celebrated little victories. Knowing I had outright told him I would love to go to brunch there, I was sure he had remembered. “Where do you want to eat for lunch?” I inquired, blithely. “Let’s not go to lunch. It will be too crowded to-day,” he commented.

Ah hah! He had planned a special home cooked lunch just for us and our baby. How cozy. How thoughtful. How wrong I was.

Tip Number Three: Listen. Boys, I suggest when we drop a very obvious hint about a place we would like to eat, a dress we saw in a window, a bauble that caught our eye or any other such thing, you keep a notebook on your person and write it down. These are things we hope you will remember.

We arrived at our home, and I waited, like a dog begging for scraps, for my husband to finally pull back the curtain and pronounce, “Tada!” and show me this wonderful, meaningful, thoughtful surprise I was sure he was leading up to. In-stead, he asked if I’d like a frozen pizza. I tried to squelch my tears. I tried to hide my disappoint-ment, but I’ve never been good at doing so.

“Sure,” I said, finally realizing that this was my thank-you for the nine months of discomfort. This was the thanks I got for bearing him a son to carry on his name. A frozen pizza.

Tip Number Four: If you are going to make a meal at home as part of a special oc-casion, that’s fine. Just make it memo-rable. Light candles. Bring breakfast in bed. Put out the good china. Anything, to make it differ from the norm.

Instead of going off on a rant, I laced up my run-ning shoes and hit the treadmill. I had just begun to talk myself out of being angry. “He’s never done this before, either,” I reasoned to myself. “It’s his first Mother’s Day, too. He needs more obvious hints …” That’s when he came into the workout room with a sheepish look on his face. “Your pizza’s ready,” he said. “I kind of burnt it.”

This was the breaking point, where I disinte-grated into a quivering mass of tears and snot. I then went on a tirade about my many mounting disappointments of the day, and how I couldn’t believe he could treat me this way after all I went through for this beautiful baby of ours.

After making him feel about an inch tall, I took a shower, got dressed, and took myself out for Mother’s Day.

Since then, Dan has learned that it doesn’t take much more than a little effort to make a Mother’s Day a success. And when prepar-ing for the day, whatever he has in store, he knows better than to mention pizza.

Tip Number Five: It really is the thought that counts. Just make sure it’s your thought and not your secretary’s, your mom’s or your best friend’s wife’s.

Teens Today

www.marcylytle.com

Marcy Lytle

i can remember when my daughter hit middle school and came home to inform me that a boy had asked her to “go out.” Of course, I quickly asked, “Where are you going? He can’t even drive!” It took my daughter and I about both about 24 hours to figure out that “going out” meant what I called “going steady” back when I was in school. She wanted to tell him “Yes!” before she even knew what he wanted! Times change, terminology really changes, but teens and their attraction to the opposite sex – it’s still the same – and it’s scary for parents. I knew I was in for a long road ahead when I picked up this same daughter on her first day back in kindergarten and saw her with a boy pinned to the ground, while she was trying to kiss him!

My husband and I have raised two teens, a boy and a girl, and the way we handled dating was different for both of them. I don’t think there’s re-ally a Rule Book for Parents on dating, although there are many good books out there to read. Some parents do not allow dating until their kids are 18. Others encourage their kids to date and “sample” many different personalities so they can be sure of what they want and don’t want. Some parents never have the “talk” with their kids and leave it up to the school, or other kids, to inform them. Other parents talk so much their kids don’t really listen. So what’s a parent to do, when it comes to dating?

First and foremost, parents need to be a good example to their kids of what a good relation-ship looks like. If you dishonor your spouse, treat each other with disdain and abuse, your kids will follow suit. It’s that simple. If you’ve got marital issues you haven’t dealt with, don’t wait until your teen comes home from a date crying, because they were just treated like they’ve seen you treat your better half. If you’re a single par-ent, talk to your teens about your own mistakes, and share with them what you’ve learned.

Secondly, talk to your teens. It doesn’t matter if you haven’t been a good communicator before, or don’t know what to say. That’s no excuse! Talk to your kids early on, about relationships. Teach them to honor their bodies, to protect their hearts, and remind them that their heart belongs to you until the day you give them away. And listen to them! If kids feel comfortable and ac-cepted when sharing their feelings, they won’t hide what they’re doing from you.

Thirdly, get to know your kids’ friends, in-vite them to your house to hang out, and love on all of them. Don’t blindly let your teen go wherever they want, at whatever time they want, and return while you’re fast asleep. Give your teens parameters and stick to them. Ex-pect the best out of them, and encourage them when you see it!

Fourth, be aware of what your teens are watching on TV and in movies! There are plenty of websites to read about movies before kids see them (www.pluggedin.com is a great source.) And television is sometimes worse! What your kids watch, and what they see you watch, will affect their behavior – because teens idolize celebrities – and they want to be accepted and fit in.

This brings me to my fifth tip. Once your kids are old enough to date (and it’s not at age 13!), help them plan their outings, reminding them to stay in public places, or come home and play games. I know that sounds old-fashioned and out of date, but a little planning goes a long way. Your kids belong to you, they live in your home, and they enjoy your benefits…so YOU are the authority. If they have other op-tions than driving around, watching bad mov-ies, and getting into trouble, they will see that dates can be fun, friends can be made, and the serious stuff can wait.

SO what are some options for teen dating? Take your kids out to dinner and show them a good time…it will be money well spent. Invite your kids for a game night, and make some fun snacks…it will be memories worth mak-ing. Encourage your kids to join a local youth group and become a part of giving to others…this turns the focus off of themselves. And finally, pray for them…encourage them…and make sure they know they’re loved! Teens really do want to please.

Hometown Heroes

HOMeTOWN HeROeS SPeCIAL eDITION:Remembering Senior Officer

Jaime PadronWhat should have been a routine shoplifting call end-ed in death for Senior Austin Police Officer Jaime Padron, 40, on April 6, 2012. Since then, thousands have shown their appreciation and respect for the former Marine. This month, we at Bell County Family want to do the same by committing this month’s Hometown Heroes section to Officer Padron.

At 2:30 a.m., April 6, Officer Padron responded to a Wal-Mart store off I-35 in North Austin, where an in-toxicated man had been reportedly shoplifting items from the store. After talking to the two Wal-Mart employees, Padron noticed the suspect attempting to leave the scene on foot. He ran after the man and tackled him. The men scuffled, and the suspect pulled a pistol from his pocket, shooting Padron in the vest and then fatally in the neck before turning the gun on the two Wal-Mart employees.

Showing their heroic colors, the employees tackled the man again and held him while they used Pa-dron’s radio to call dispatchers for help. They continued to restrain the suspect until help arrived min-utes later, all the while encour-aging Padron to “stay with us.” Padron died on the scene.

In the weeks following, as the story received more press coverage, the public began to show their appreci-ation for Padron’s extensive service

to his country. On the day of his fu-neral, the miles of highway stretch-ing from Austin to San Angelo were flanked by thousands of strangers paying their respects to an officer many of them had never met. They held American flags, stood at atten-tion, and saluted their fallen hero.

Websites were shut down by those submitting their condolences, sta-tion phones rang off the hook, and fundraisers in Padron’s name received thousands of dona-tions. None, perhaps, were more touching than the heartfelt sym-pathies by those who met Padron while he was on duty.

Commander Jason Dusterhoft of the APD Highway Command was manning the phones during one fundraiser when a former suspect apprehended by Padron called in with a donation.

“He said he didn’t have a job, and he’d like to give $5 or $10 but he didn’t have a lot of money,” he said. “I told him we’d take anything. He then mentioned that he’d been ar-rested by Officer Padron. He said, ‘He was a great guy, and he treated me like a human being.’”

Another tribute came from a Face-book comment on an article about

the funeral arrangements by a mother who encountered Padron when she made a 911 call relating to her young daughter.

“Everyone was asking lots of ques-tions and running around all over the place. He took me aside, looked me in the eyes and told me that ev-erything was going to be okay. He was the only one who took time to comfort me. That meant a lot. He was a wonderful officer.”

More than 630 comments have poured into the APD web page remembering Officer Padron. And the tributes continue com-ing. Wal-Mart donated $50,000 to the Padron family and an-other $25,000 to the APD, which they say they will use for a youth program because, “That’s what Jaime would have wanted.”

Meanwhile, his young daugh-ters, ages 6 and 11, grap-ple with the loss of their fa-ther, a former Marine, career officer and, from this point forward, everyone’s Hometown Hero.

Drifting is a natural phenomenon. It happens at the beach. You go out to play in the water, then come back up to shore and notice you’ve drifted down the coast line. It’s a long walk across the hot sand to find your beach towels.

This happens in marriage. It can be a real shock to wake up one day and re-alize how far apart you’ve drifted. The waves of life pull at us. It takes strength, resolve and a concerted effort to kick against the tide, to stay connected, to live united. So we thought we’d offer Ten Ways to Stay Connected.

10. Be Together Sit beside each other during your favorite TV show. Avoid the “kids in the middle” strategy when the family goes out. If there is some-thing that needs to be done….do it together! We love to hang out on the patio in the evening, simply enjoying each other’s presence.

9. Pray Together Take a few minutes every day to pray together. We do this in the morning before we get out of bed. Find the spot in your day that works for you even if it is just before going to sleep. Pray for the needs of others and then pray for each other. There is power in agreement.

8. Listen We can be great listeners for our friends, but tune out over the years to our spouses. Maybe we feel like we’ve heard all their stories. Maybe we focus on their character and less on car-ing. Give your spouse a compassionate ear. Actively listen with your body language and your responses.

7. Share Your Dreams & Goals It takes vulnerability and trust to share your crazy dreams. Sometimes I think I need to be the voice of reason when David shares a dream. That can be a real downer. Believe in each other’s dreams. Support each other’s pursuits. There is incredible valida-tion in knowing that your spouse is in your corner.

6. Touch Each Other Hold hands. Hug. Try a 10 second kiss even if it embarrasses your kids! Snuggle up. Rub your husband’s shoulders. Massage your wife’s feet. We need these touches. Sometimes they speak louder than our words.

5. Date Night We are horrible about date night. It sounds like such a great idea and we know we need to get better at it, but life has a way of stealing away our evenings. What does work for us is a weekly breakfast date every Friday morning at our favorite little restaurant.

4. Give Together Matthew 6:21 states “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Knit your hearts together by giving of your treasure. We love to do this. Every month we plant our tithe and our hearts in our local church. Whenever we have extra funds we have a blast coming together on where to give.

3. Serve Together On the third Saturday of every month, we join a group of volunteers who provide a worship service and a hearty meal for folks who may not otherwise have one. We always leave feel-ing so thankful for our many blessings. This gratitude ties us together and lends perspective to our lives.

2. Forgive Sometimes nearness causes friction. Sparks may fly as you attempt to draw closer. Don’t give up! Have the humility to admit when you are wrong. Get great at forgiving and forgiving again!

1. Glue Spiritually God has designed a powerful way for a husband and wife to connect. One thing we learned in counseling is that physical inti-macy is like spiritual glue. Whenever we feel disconnected, we know it’s time to focus on this area of our relationship.

Drifting is especially dangerous because it is so subtle. We are often un-aware it is happening at all. One of its strongest forces is the feeling of familiar. We get used to living with each other. We take each other for granted. We grow accustomed to our roles and routines. A little spontane-ity goes a long way in the fight with familiar. So, plan some fun this spring. Take time to relax, enjoy life together, and stay connected!
