1.) What unique property of water prevented

the balloon with water in it to burst?

2.) What unique property of water prevented

The Amazing Properties of Water!

Page 4: Bell Work:

All living things depend on water.

Water is essential to life on Earth!

Page 5: Bell Work:

Water is the only substance that can be found naturally in all 3 states—solid, liquid, & gas.

Page 6: Bell Work:

Unlike most substances, water actually expands when it freezes!

When it freezes it becomes less dense (the molecules are further apart) than its liquid form.

This is why ice floats! – it is lighter than liquid water.

Page 7: Bell Work:

Water has a neutral pH. It can dissolve both acids and bases.

Page 8: Bell Work:

Water is considered the “Universal Solvent”!

It can dissolve many substances.

In Fact!

Page 9: Bell Work:

It can absorb a lot of heat before changing temperature.

And, it can absorb a lot of heat before evaporating.

Water has a high specific heat and heat of

vaporization:

Page 10: Bell Work:

This is why water can…

act as a coolant for things like cars and power plants.

regulate the earth’s temperature, making it a better place to live for all living things.

Page 11: Bell Work:

Because of the unequal sharing of electrons between the hydrogen and oxygen atoms water molecules form a polar covalent bond—this causes the molecule to bend creating a positively charged end and a negatively charged end.

Polar Nature of Water:

Page 12: Bell Work:

The negatively charged oxygen atom is attracted to the positively charged hydrogen atoms of other water molecules.

This causes the molecules to stick together.

This is called cohesion--o The ability for a substance to adhere to itself.

Water Molecules “Stick” To Each Other

Page 13: Bell Work:

Is a result of

cohesion.

Measures how difficult it is to break the surface of a liquid.

Surface Tension

Page 14: Bell Work:

Other substances are attracted to water molecules as well.

This is called adhesion• the ability for substances to

adhere to other substances.

Water “sticks” to other things too!

Page 15: Bell Work:

The force that pulls water upward, against the force of gravity.

Is a result of cohesion and adhesion.

This is an essential property of plants. It is how water moves from the roots of a plant all the way to the leaves.

Capillary Action

What did you learn about water today that you did not understand before?

Summarize this at the bottom of your notes and share with your lab partner.
