What is Slam Poetry? • Slam Poetry is a form of competitive poetry that brings together different poets to test their creative abilities. • Slam Poetry was born from the late eighties and became more prominent in the early nineties and came about from poets like the Beats. • Slam Poetry can be performed by two individuals or even in groups. • In Slam Poetry there are usually strict rules to which type of poetry can be used in the contest; the most popular forms are either free verse or haiku.• Slam Poetry is competitive because it makes the poet: be creative, have expressive performance skills, and peer feedback.
