SUMMER STUDENT EMPLOYMENT
This is a reminder that summer student applications for employment with the Village of
Belledune should be received here at the Municipal Office by June 3, 2016. Please make sure you have a
covering letter and resume in by that date. Students must be enrolled full time in school and returning
to school next year. We ask that you have a letter of acceptance for next year as proof that you are
returning to school; this is required for the funding we get from the provincial and Federal governments.
FROM THE DESK OF THE C.A.O.
Last month I had a number of calls from women interested in finding out more about our fire
department. Way to go for those who expressed an interest. I did have one contact from someone who
thought my comments were somehow discounting and this was far from my intent. So if you are
thinking about it why not give it a try.
As spring is upon us, although you would never know it today, I have had an idea that I would seek some
input on. Currently we mow down grass in our ditches during the summer and we have vacant property
that we do the same for. There is, for example, an old baseball field right at the corner of Chaleur Dr.
and Hodgins street that I look at every day.
At the same time as I look through gardening magazines I see lots of articles on helping bees who
pollinate our food, by planting wild flowers. I wondered, why not plant flowers in the vacant field and in
ditches and save the cost of gas and mowing and help the honey bees at the same time.
The other thing that comes to mind is why not plant cedar trees along road sides where we know we
have drifting every year. Kind of a natural snow fence and wind break .These things take time to take
root but are just examples of things we can do to help the environment and save money.
If anyone has a great idea that you have been keeping to yourself send it in. Why not?
Here’s an email you can use: [email protected] David Hughes, C.A.O.

Notice to all Residents – Tax Assessment
The Belledune Council wish to advise you that in 2015 all properties within the Village limits
have been assessed by the provincial Assessment Office, a responsibility falling under the
jurisdiction of the Province of New Brunswick. A full community assessment had not been done in
Belledune for ten or more years.
In general, property owners will see an increase in assessments, over which the Belledune Council
has no control.
The tax rate, however, which is controlled by Council has seen no increase since 2012 with
the current municipal rate remaining at $0.9513 per $100.00 of assessment for the Fringe zone
(outside industrial area), and the $1.1784 for the Central zone (industrial area).
If you have inquiries about your tax bill when you receive it this year you should contact:
Service New Brunswick, Mr. Richard Leger (Assessor)
157 Water Street, City Center Mall, Campbellton, N.B. E3N 3L4
Tel # (506) 789-2210 Fax: (506) 789-2582 e-mail:[email protected]
If you wish to appeal your assessment, fill in the “Request for Review of Assessment” on the
bottom portion of your tax bill, and submit it to the appropriate address prior to the deadline date.

72 HOUR EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS
GET AN EMERGENCY KIT In an emergency, you will need some basic supplies. You may need to get by without power or
tap water. Be prepared to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours.
You may have some of these items already, such as food, water and a battery-operated or crank
flashlight. The key is to make sure they are organized and easy to find. Would you be able to
find your flashlight in the dark?
Make sure your kit is easy to carry and everyone in the household knows where it is. Keep it in a
backpack, duffle bag or suitcase with wheels, in an easy-to-reach, accessible place such as your
front hall closet. If you have many people in your household, your emergency kit could get
heavy. It’s a good idea to separate some of these supplies in backpacks. That way, your kit will
be more portable and each person can personalize his/her own grab-and-go emergency kit.
What do you put in your emergency kit?
A basic emergency kit should contain the following:
Water – at least two litres of water per person per day for a minimum of 72 hours; include
small bottles that can be carried easily in case of an evacuation order.
Food – that won’t spoil, such as canned food, energy bars and dried food (replace food and
water once a year and be mindful of expiry dates).
Manual can opener
Crank, solar or battery-powered flashlights and radio. Check and replace batteries once a
year.
First aid kit.
Extra keys to your vehicle(s) and home.
A copy of your emergency plan and contact information.
If applicable, other items such as prescription medications, infant formula, pet food, and
equipment for people with special needs (personalize accordingly).
Recommended additional items
Two additional litres of water per person per day for cooking and cleaning.
Candles and matches or lighter (keep candles in deep, sturdy containers and do not burn
unattended).
Change of clothing and footwear for each household member.
Sleeping bags/warm blankets for each household member.
Toiletries.
Hand sanitizer.
Utensils.
Garbage bags.
Household chlorine bleach or water purifying tablets (to make water potable).
Basic tools (hammer, pliers, wrench, screwdrivers, work gloves, dust mask, pocket knife).
A whistle (in case you need to attract attention).
Duct tape (to tape up windows, doors, air vents, etc.).

Rail Safety Tips
The Village Council passed a resolution, at the March 21/16 meeting, that the annual national “Public – Rail Safety Week be held from April 25-May 1/16. Did you know? Trespassing on railway tracks and property is the leading cause of rail-related deaths in Canada. By definition, trespassing on railway property is illegal. Keep these safety tips handy – they could save your life! 1. Speed Misperception – Because of their size, trains appear to be much further away and traveling much slower than their actual speed. Don’t be fooled! 2. Trains Can’t Stop Quickly – Trains can travel at speeds of over 160 km/h and can require over 2 kilometres to stop. Trains can stop, but they can’t stop quickly. 3. Trespassing – Taking a shortcut across the tracks or being on railway property is illegal and trespassers can get seriously injured or killed. 4. Weight Ration – An average freight train weights over 5.5 million kg. Compare that to a car, which weighs around 1,375 kg. A train hitting a car is like a car hitting a pop can. 5. Railway Cars – Stopped railway cars can move at any time. If you’re on one or near one when it moves, you could lose a limb or worse, your life. 6. Tunnels and Bridges – If you are trespassing on a bridge with a train approaching, you have two choices: jump or get hit. Tunnels, bridges, and trestles are only designed for trains. 7. Overhang – Trains can carry loads that are wider than the railroad cars themselves. They can have chains, straps, or other equipment swinging loose from the train. If you are standing too close, you could get hit. 8. Anytime is Train Time – Trains do not always run on a schedule. They can run at any time, on any track and come from either direction.
