Memorable Melody:‘Dance of the Sugar
Plum Fairy’The delicate notes of this
melody are among the mostrecognizable pieces of music fromPeter Tchaikovsky’s celebratedballet “The Nutcracker,” whichpremiered in 1892. The Russiancomposer created the tune’smagical bell-like tone using a newinstrument called the celesta, which looks like an upright piano, but its keys strike metal barssimilar to those of a glockenspiel.Still today, the timeless dancepiece can be heard in variousarrangements throughout theholiday season. We will also beexploring holiday classics such asJ.S. Bach’s Christmas Oratorio,Handel’s Messiah, as well as worksfrom Liszt and Tchaikovsky duringMusic Appreciation onWednesday afternoons.

Winter ConcernsThe winter months can make
life challenging for everyone. Hereare some helpful tips forpreventing common winterdangers that the elderlypopulation face:
• Avoid Slipping on Ice Icy,snowy roads and sidewalksmake it easy to slip and fall.Often these falls cause majorinjuries such as hip and wristfractures, head trauma andmajor lacerations. Make sureto wear shoes with goodtraction and non-skid soles.
• Dress for Warmth Coldtemperatures can lead tofrostbite and hypothermia - acondition where the bodytemperature dips too low.Going outside? Dress inlayers and wear warm socks,a heavy coat, a warm hat, gloves and a scarf (to coveryour mouth and protect yourlungs). In very coldtemperatures, cover allexposed skin.
• Fight WintertimeDepression Because it can bedifficult and dangerous to getaround, many seniors haveless contact with othersduring cold months. To helpavoid feelings of lonelinessand isolation, familymembers should check in onseniors as often as possible;even a short, daily phone callcan make a big difference.
• Check the Car Drivingduring the winter can behazardous for anyone, but itis especially dangerous forolder people. Get your carserviced before wintertimehits. Checking things like theoil, tires, battery and wiperscan make a big difference onwinter roads.
Wintertime certainly poseschallenges for seniors, but with abit of planning and awareness, you will stay healthy andexperience the joys of springtimesoon enough.
