In some ways, it seems absolutely impossible to me that fifteen years have already passed since I first walked through the front door at our community. While I have enjoyed longevity at other places of employment, fifteen years is a milestone for me. In my many years at Belmont Village, I have had the amazing opportunity to become acquainted with so many remarkable residents, family members and staff. I have had the distinct honor of sharing many heartfelt discussions. Residents, families and staff have allowed me into their lives so that I could help them on their particular journeys. I cherish all of these moments as I feel so grateful to have been given the opportunity to help. You have been there for me as well during all the happy times and the sad ones, too. I will never forget how the community of Belmont Village welcomed my aunt when she moved into our community many years ago. The same wonderful welcome was extended to my mom when she arrived here last June. You helped me celebrate high school and college graduations, a wedding and the birth of my granddaughter. Through your sweet cards, hugs and kind words, you helped me endure the loss of my dad and then just three years later, my mom. Thank you for every second of the past 15 years. Thank you for your trust and for opening your hearts to me. I have cherished every moment. I look forward to continuing to serve you for many years to come. I anticipate the future we will share together and the memories we will create along the way.

HEART HEALTHY DIETHeart disease is the number

one killer of both men andwomen in the United States. Ifyou are worried about heartdisease, one of the mostimportant things you can do is tostart eating a heart-healthy diet.Changing your diet can help stopor even reverse heart disease.

A heart-healthy diet focuses onadding more healthy foods toyour diet and cutting back onfoods that are not so goodfor you.

Healthy foods are ones that arehigh in vitamins, minerals, fiberand other nutrients, such as:

Fruits and vegetablesBeans (including chickpeas and

lentils) and whole grains (such aswhole wheat, brown rice, oats, rye, bulgur, barley, quinoa, and corn).

Oily fish like salmon, trout, albacore, tuna, herring, mackerel, and sardines, which containsheart healthy omega-3 fatty acids. You can also get omega-3 fatsfrom omega-3 eggs, walnuts, flaxseeds and canola oil.

Limit foods such as unhealthyfats, such as saturated fats, transfat, and cholesterol.

Saturated fats are mostly foundin animal products, such as meats

and dairy products.Trans fats include shortening,

partially hydrogenated vegetablesoils and hydrogenated vegetableoils. Trans fats are made when aliquid fat is turned into a solid fat(for example when corn is madeinto stick margarine). They arefound in many processed foods, such as cookies, crackers, andsnack foods. Restaurants often usehydrogenated oils for frying foods,so try to limit fried foods wheneating out.

Cholesterol is found in animalproducts, such as eggs, dairyproducts and meats.

Salt (Sodium). You need somesodium in your diet, but mostpeople get far more than theyneed. Too much sodium tends toraise blood pressure. Processedfoods and fast foods often containa lot of sodium. Try to limit thesefoods and try to eat more freshfoods.

Eating foods that containunhealthy fats can raise the LDL(bad) cholesterol in your blood.Having a high level of LDLcholesterol increases your chanceof having clogged arteries(atherosclerosis), which can leadto coronary artery disease andheart attack.

Trans fat is especially bad. Itraises both the level of badcholesterol and lowers the goodcholesterol in the blood. Try toavoid trans fat as much aspossible.
