NewsHealth

October is Breast CancerAwareness month, and althoughmore and more people arebecoming aware of the fact thatbreast cancer is a significantconcern for females across thepopulation, many fail to realizethe role lifestyle plays in itsprevention and management.Breast cancer accounts for overone third of invasive cancers inwomen. Many medicalprofessionals are recognizing thata physically active lifestyle, combined with weightmanagement and a caloriecontrolled, low-fat diet high invegetables, fruits, fiber, and low inred meat intake are importantcomponents to reducing the risk.

Due to the fact that breastcancer risk is positively associatedwith body mass index and energyintake, and inversely associatedwith physical activity, one of thefirst steps to prevention isattaining an active lifestyle andpracticing calorie control withinone’s diet.

In addition to calorie controland physical activity, the nutrientsin the diet also play an importantrole in reducing the risk of breastcancer development. Due to thefact that breast cancer, like mostforms of cancer, is a

heterogeneous disease, differentdietary factors may affect breastcancer subgroups differently.

Alcohol intake has also beenimplicated in elevated risk forbreast cancer. It is suggested thatheavy alcohol use is associatedwith increased risk, but so ismoderate consumption.Researchers suggest thatindividuals who consume alcoholat moderate to high levels shouldincrease their folate intake, whichseems to mitigate the risk at somelevel. The inverse associationbetween folate and breast cancerrisk was significant among womenconsuming at least one drinkper day.

Researchers suggest that aphysically active lifestyle and adiet rich in fruits and vegetablesand high in fiber is the rightapproach to prevention.Additionally, low-fat dairyproducts seem to offer addedbenefit. To the contrary, a diet richin starch, processed foods andanimal fat, seems to increase risk, and therefore, those should beappropriately limited in the diet.Key nutrients associated withpossible reduced risk includeVitamins A, C, D, and calcium.Vitamins E and B may providesome benefit for diets low inthose nutrients, but high intakeshave not shown statistical value indecreasing the risk of breast cancerdevelopment.
