Peter Menne was born in 1962 as a Westphalien, without much effort on his part. His professional career began in the art room at college in Bielefeld, where every top model became a cartoon through his pen. Today he lives with his wife and two children in Potsdam. He does illustra-tions for magazines, school books and children’s books and designs posters, advertising and cartoons.

To the delight of the town inhabitants and to the amazement of readers, these hilarious animal figures parade through the streets. Cartoonist Peter Menne presents a wonderfully peculiar picture book debut.

Unbelievable, what tricks the dogs perform on their unicycles or the zebras on their rollerskates! Those who don’t see the cool city rats ride by on their motorcycles have really missed a spectacle. Next the fire brigade snails come by – and what did those elks think up now? Simply hysterical! This book teeming full of figures tells tales without words, and yet you will hear all sorts of booms and bangs, cackling and gig-gling, moos and meows when gazing at the pages.

A fantastic animals’ carnival frolics through town …

Lilli is sitting at the window. And whereas the world outside is get-ting whiter and whiter, visitors start to arrive – a horse, a bear and a dragon with a long scarf come by, and a snow girl in a carriage, a spirit of the air and many more.

Lilli’s snow figures become snow stories – and finally, for Lilli and her readers, a whole world is created out of snow. Heinz Janisch’s poetic texts tend to linger quite a while before readers feel like turning to the next page. Søren Jessen’s strong brush strokes invite you to follow Lilli’s tracks in the snow and to continue spinning her tales. A wonderful picture book for quiet hours in the winter season!

Katrin Stangl, born in 1977, stud-ied at the Academy of Visual Arts in Leipzig, where she was a student of Volker Pfüller’s. She received nu-merous awards for her illustrations, including the Design Award from the Büchergilde Gutenberg and a grant for picture books from Troisdorf. She lives and works as a freelance artist with her family in Cologne.

Thieves are a big topic for small children. And »The Thieves of Toulouse« is the classic book read in daycare centers throughout Germany, a book children simply can’t get enough of. Katrin Stangl has found impressive illustrations with intense colours to go with the story, which still leave enough room for children’s own imagina-tions.

Day after day the song about the Thieves of Toulouse is sung and played in daycare centers (also called »The Forest of Toulouse«) – a wild bunch of thieves is hiding among the trees, waiting for people they can steal things from. And finally someone comes along, on a high horse. »Give us your purse, or we will kill you!« And at the same moment the police arrive – and take the thieves with them. »There are no more thieves in the forest of Toulouse …«

A pack of thieves lives in the forest of Toulouse

Discover the answer after turning the page – children will playfully learn more about domestic and exotic animals found in the zoo after listening to the short, informative texts. Maps of the whole zoo and a large map of the world show where the animals are originally from.

Helme Heine, born in 1941 in Berlin, is one of the greatest picture book artists alive today. He created a classic with his book Friends, which is popular all over the world. Today he lives in New Zealand, writes scripts for the radio, television, films and audio books, creates sculptures and designs furniture, is a producer and hopes to live long enough to accomplish all of his projects and plans.

12 Picture Book

Just in time for the 30th anniversary of Helme Heine’s picture book classic Friends this heartfelt gift edition True Friends Are … appears

It is always very precious to have true friends, as Johnny Mouse, fat Percy the pig and Charlie Rooster know – along with millions of small and large children. Like no other, Helme Heine summarizes what makes the difference in a true friendship in 30 amusing, serious, adventurous and tongue-in-cheek scenes involving the three friends. For true friends are really attached, know how to help each other, don’t leave each other out in the rain, are there for each other when the going gets rough, would give each other the shirts off their backs, can develop unknown powers and much, much more. Wonderfully written and with heart-warming illustrations.

The CHILDRENS’ ARTIST BOOKS are cult. Friendship books are, too. High time for the ultimately most wonderful, doodley, crea-tive friendship book ever – the CHILDREN’S ARTISTS’ FRIENDSHIP BOOK. You can never have enough friends!

Enough space for 40 friends to answer amus-ing and serious questions like, »My name is _____ – _____ is what I’d like it to be.«, »Things I like to do«, »very delicious – very disgusting / totally embarrassing – totally cool« or »Have you ever eaten boogers?«, _____ rhymes with my name – _____ rhymes with your name«, »If I were an animal …«, etc. And because the crea-tive aspect is never missing in the CHILDREN’S ARTISTS’ BOOKS, there are also 10 fun double page spreads where everyone can have their fun, including »Our most terrible curse words« and »Instructions for making friendship gift certificates«. There has never been such an ideal friendship book!

LABOR is a studio cooperation in Frankfurt am Main.(www.laborproben.de). The following artists contributed to the Children’s Artists’ Friendship Book: Kirsten Fabinski, Zuni Fellehner, Anke Kuhl, Alexandra Maxeiner, Jörg Mühle, Moni Port, Na-tascha Vlahović, Philip Waechter.

Winner of the German Youth Literature Prize and a real success – 2011 was Anton’s year! Here comes a new story about Anton, the crazy, stubborn little guy, with congenial illustrations by Elke Kusche.

Anton cockily announces to the whole class that he would come to the class trip on his heelies. There’s only one problem – he doesn’t have any … What to do? He could tell his parents to go to the bank and take out the money to buy him the cool shoes with wheels. But the next problem is that their washer is broken and they need their money for that, not to buy some cool shoes for Anton. When Anton’s attempts at getting work as a stuntman fail and he has no luck getting the money from Grandma and Grandpa, he finally has a terrific idea. It should be no problem printing his own money on a new colour copy machine …

Milena Baisch, born in 1976, studied at the Film Academy in Berlin. In addition to writing screenplays for movies and television, she has already written and published numerous picture books and stories for beginning readers. Diving Anton was her first children’s novel with Beltz & Gelberg, for which she received the German Youth Literature Prize.

Elke Kusche, born in 1980 in Karl-Marx-Stadt, studied Visual Com-munication in Weimar. She works as freelance illustrator and graphic designer. Soon she will have finished her medicine course and thus fulfil her second biggest wish: to become a doctor. Together with her partner and two daughters she lives in Weimar.

The flowered rubber boots even make Lu, the cool-est of them all, finally lose her wits. But all the girls’ efforts to ward off the prophecy or change reality fail. After spiritual sessions, investigations on the biker front and strange encounters with lake own-ers, the three suddenly find themselves in Berlin again. Lu begins to use the time she has left – she sings her own songs for the first time, discovers passion for the first time and realizes how terribly beautiful life can be. Her whirlwind happiness ends abruptly when the girls accidentally find themselves in possession of a bag that contains a clue as to who their murders are! They are mortified – particularly Lu. For she knows the murderer all too well...

Jeanette Wagner, Ulrike Molsen and Miram Sachs are screenwriters and producers between the ages of 35 and 41 years of age. The authors are par-tially familiar with small town life from their own youth and finally had to write something about it.

The world in the year 2036 – absolute mobil-ity has become reality. No problem to have breakfast on the Fidji Islands, work in Berlin and attend a concert in Tel Aviv in the even-ing. By using a worldwide gateway network, people can beam themselves, information and even resources from one place to the next within seconds. Then the inconceivable happens – the network fails – and with it, the whole world.

Celia, Alex and Bernie could have been able to enjoy a fast-paced lifestyle and see each other wherever and whenever they wanted to. Yet when Celia’s mother, the inventor of the gateway network dies, a shadow is cast on their friendship. Celia is in mourning and wants to leave everything behind her in her grief. Until catastrophy hits when the gateway network breaks down. Like everyone else, the friends are stranded – Alex in Berlin, Celia in Ireland and Bernie in the wilderness in north-eastern Germany. Everyday the world around them falls apart piece by piece – cities without elec-tricity and water turn into death traps. Disease, famine and violence break out. The civilized world collapses and the friends have to fight to survive. And they have to find each other. For perhaps Celia’s mother’s death has something to do with it all …

A thrilling and disquieting novel by Gabi Neumayer on the effects of the collapse of the modern world still unknown to us.

Maren Gottschalk, born in 1962, studied History and Political Science and lives and works as a freelance journalist and author in Leverkusen. She has published highly praised biographies on Nelson Mandela, Astrid Lindgren and most recently a biography on Frida Kahlo entitled Die Farben meiner Seele (The Colours of My Soul) with Beltz.

22 Biography

As a partisan and member of the »White Rose«, Sophie Scholl (1921–1943) became a legend. Her courage and dauntlessness are even more amazing considering that she was an enthusiastic Hitler Youth leader just a few years beforehand. New sources reveal that Sophie Scholl was more complicated and enthralling than previously known to be.

The Scholl family was split in two after 1933 – whereas the parents regarded Hitler as a danger-ous »rat catcher«, their children were fascinated by the Hitler Youth and the League of German Girls (Bund Deutscher Mädchen). However So-phie Scholl also believed in freedom and altruism and felt more and more disgusted by the con-tempt shown by the NS regime. Her boyfriend, a young officer named Fritz Hartnagel, with whom she had a close, but difficult relationship, told her about his gruesome experiences on the East front. Shortly before her arrest on Febru-ary 18, 1943, after handing out leaflets on the White Rose with her brother Hans at the Munich University, she said, »So many people are dying for the Regime – it is time, that someone does something to stop it.« She was executed at the age of 21. A portrait showing Sophie Scholl from various angles, making her come to life as a person and not just concentrating on her role as a partisan. Maren Gottschalk evaluated many documents, and also letters and diaries that were previously not available for viewing. She was able to receive valuable information from talks with Sophie’s sister Elisabeth Hartnagel.

Youth Book Beltz & Gelberg 23

The story of Bertie and Lisa, two that don’t know about each other and who are attracted to each other as if it were a match made in heaven. A wonderful novel, in which Kordon tells the story of a great love from the Second World War and while doing so, looks back on half a century.

When the two meet, they both have lived half their lives already. Lisa Gerber, a waitress who always has had to be there for others, and in the meanwhile has her own restaurant and two chil-dren. Bertie Lenz, who grew up in an orphanage and works as a mason, living as a lodger. When he runs into trouble with the SA, Lisa helps him flee. Then one day he is standing on her doorstep – and refuses to leave. But they don’t have much time for romance when the war begins in 1939. Bertie is called to serve and has to go to Russia. A time of waiting begins for Lisa, and her only memory of Bertie is a baby boy, Manne, and a small, colourful tin merry-go-round that can be wound up …

»My mother gave me the merry-go-round and asked me to guard it like a treasure. And so I went about the task of restoring it. When I turned 18 and was released from the youth center, I moved back to Prenzlauer Berg and found that my mother’s restaurant had been turned into a shoe store. One day I entered the rooms of the former restaurant, and decided at that moment to write about my parents’ life.« Klaus Kordon on his new novel

Klaus Kordon, born in 1943, lives in Berlin. He is amongst the most renowned authors of children’s and youth books whose work has received numer-ous awards. His latest novels are Kiko and the his-torical novel Im Spinnennetz (In the Spider’s Web).

24 Specialised Book

An unconventional, surprising book for girls with directions for all kinds of things. There are many ideas and in-structions describing what is possible and how to go about it.

Whether it be planting a vegetable gar-den, hooking up a hi-fi system, repairing a bike, mending holes, putting a blog on-line, doing volunteer work or cooking for more than ten friends – you will find out how to do it in this book. You need not do everything, but it doesn’t hurt to know how. And it’s really not so hard to attach the shelf to the wall when you have good instructions. Or to record a radio show, or to get a band together, or to bake party invitations. You can also read how to grow a potato plant and organize a birthday party or to do volunteer work for those less fortunate than you. Sometimes you just need directions and the encouragement to start doing something – alone or with your girlfriends.

Specialised Book Beltz & Gelberg 25

This book offers far more than an average cook-book. It is a book for passionate veggie choppers and for kitchen researchers both young and old. A book for all those who take an interest in food, the kitchen and cooking – with all sorts of ideas, information and join-in activities.

Every child can join in a conversation about food. Why do I like certain things? What does it taste like? What kind of foods do I dislike? But it really starts to get interesting when, together with chil-dren, a closer look is taken at the subject and what is going on in the kitchen. That’s what this book is all about – finding out what kinds of foods there are, where they come from and how they are best prepared. There are practical tips for a healthy diet, for shopping and buying ahead and what kind of kitchen utensils are good to have on hand. And there’s even more, such as basic information about the effects of combining certain foods plus extraor-dinary experiments from the kitchen lab, recipes to try out and lots of encouragement to change reci-pes and create your own combinations. At the end of the book you will find a small kitchen glossary with all the methods, utensils and ingredients you need. Colourful, entertaining and full of vitamins!

Anke M. Leitzgen is both a journalist and author. She was the chief editor of miss VOGUE and a writer for the SZ-Magazin and ZEIT-Magazin. She has worked writing screen plays and filmed documentaries. But her favorite thing to do is to write books for chil-dren and youths. www.anke-m-leitzgen.de.

Lisa Rienermann is a graphic designer, photographer and illustrator. She loves to mix categories – when typography and photography hold hands, text turns into im-ages that tell stories... Her work has already been published internationally and received awards as well. www.lisarienermann.com.

Jürgen Brater, born in 1948, worked as a medical doctor in his own practice. He has been teach-ing medical students since the ‘90s and writes specialist literature as well as popular non-fiction books for adults and children. The latest book to appear on the Beltz & Gelberg list was Warum haben wir Sand in den Augen und Schmetter-linge im Bauch? about 24 hours in the human body.

26 Specialised Book

Children have lots of questions. What do the subway drivers do when they have to go to the bathroom? Do cobras poison themselves if they bite their tongues? What is Barbie’s last name? Jürgen Brater listened to kids and collected the most quirky questions about science, everyday problems, idioms or comics – and provided answers that are easy to under-stand and entertaining to read.

Let’s assume it is raining cats and dogs. How do you stay drier – by running as fast as you can, or just walking slowly? Or when doing arts and crafts – why does super glue make everything stick together, but it doesn’t stick inside the tube? And in the summertime at the lake – are there tides? Answers to these and 77 other extraordinary and amusing children’s questions are provided by Jürgen Brater in this book. As a passionate collector of the bizarre, it’s only natural that he can explain things precisely. Oh, and by the way – this is the answer to the rain question: No matter how fast you move, the same number of raindrops will hit your head, chest, stomach and legs. If you stand perfectly still, then only your head will get hit, so you won’t get as wet. But then again, it depends on how long it rains …
