Township government is the oldest form of government in North America, beginning in 1636 and in Illinois in 1848. Belvidere Township began in 1850 There are nine town-ships in Boone County and these elected officials represent what is most commonly referred to as the government closest to the people. General Assistance, Property Assessment, and Road & Bridge Maintenance are the three basic services provided by our Township. Other services pro-vide a link to the community that includes, but is not limited to, senior citizens programs, youth programs, assistance to the disabled, and cem-etery maintenance. Townships serve their citizens from the cradle to the grave.

THE BELVIDERE IOU CLUB was established in 1924 by twenty down-town businessmen to engage in charitable activities involving Belvidere/Boone County children. The club has grown to a 50 local businessperson organization that annually hosts the Easter Egg Hunt, Halloween Parade, First Grade Christmas Program and IOU Club Shopping Tour. The IOU Club contributes to many local youth-focused organizations such as the Belvidere Family YMCA, Belvidere Park District summer camp program, Boone County Conservation District summer camp, Belvidere Youth Baseball, School District 100/Rock Valley College Running Start Program and many other worthwhile youth activities. The Club meets weekly on Friday, Noon - 1 PM at the BackStop Grill and Don Banks is the current president. To contact the IOU Club, email [email protected].
THE BELVIDERE ROTARY CLUB, established in 1920, is one of the oldest and most prominent fraternal and social organizations in Boone County. Rotarian service focuses on strengthening fellowship, vocational service, community service and international service encompassing ac-tions to expand Rotary’s humanitarian outreach. The Belvidere Rotary Club supports over 30 local and international charitable causes. Club members meet every Wednesday at Noon. From May through October they meet at the American Legion and from November through April at the Belvidere Family YMCA. BOONE COUNTY ARTS COUNCIL, (P.O. Box 311, Belvidere) formed in 1987, is a local arts organization established to encourage and facilitate the use of public and private resources for the development and support of the Arts. The Council presents art enrichment programs for schools, performances by artists, summer concerts in Belvidere Park, a county wide student art show and mural promotion & enhancement. Appleton Road, Belvidere, IL, operates with a mission of preserving natural areas, pro-moting environmental education and facilitating passive recreation. Since its creation in 1964, the district has preserved more than 3,000 acres of parks, trails, and preserves. Features include 900 acres in the Kish-waukee River Valley, 800 acres in picnic areas and parks, over 30 miles of hiking, biking trails, including 15 miles of the Long Prairie Trail which stretches across northern Boone County. The Nature Center/Visitor’s Center, open year round, is utilized by schools and the public. It includes a summer day camp, public programs, and distribution of a newsletter. On site there is a historic trail which includes two historic log cabins and 5 heirloom gardens as well as an herb garden, a butterfly garden & a rain garden, which peak with the annual Autumn Pioneer Festival held the fourth weekend of September. BOONE COUNTY FAIR: Country Star Josh Turner will be headlining the 2015 Boone County Fair, 8791 Rt. 76, which runs from Tuesday, August 11th trough Sunday, August 16th. Josh Turner performs Saturday, August 15th at 8:00 PM. Hear his latest hit single ‘Lay Low’ plus other hits such as ‘Long Black Train’ and Time is Love’. On Wednesday evening at 7:00 PM hear the iconic sounds of the band ‘Chicago’ as performed by the pre-mier tribute band ‘Transit Authority’. Then there’s Pro Bull Riding Friday evening at 7:00 PM, Tractor Pulls all day Thursday with the Super Tractor & Truck Pull at 6:30 PM. Then Sunday, two great Demo Derby Shows at 1:00 & 6:00 PM. The Boone County Council on Aging is a multipurpose agency dedicated to all older adults, their families and their caregivers by reaching out with programs to help enrich and im-prove their quality of life. Services include: Computer lab, educational programs, information and assistance, in-home care, medical car escort, nutrition programs, outreach, public transportation, recreational and so-cial programs and volunteer opportunities. Support groups include Dia-betes Self Management, Low Vision, Parkinson’s, Caregivers, Grief and Veteran’s Club. A limited variety of medical equipment such as wheel-chairs, walkers, canes, bath chairs, and other assistance devices are available through the Lending Closet. Educational programs such as To Your Health, Memory Café, My Decisions, Powerful Tools for Caregivers, Chef on the Run, Smart Drivers are offered throughout the year. People of all ages are invited to this facility. Services of the Boone County Council on Aging are made available, in part, with funds provided under Title III-B and Title III-E of the Older Amer-icans Act, GAP Filling Funds, and the Illinois General Revenue Funds through Northwestern Illinois Area Agency on Aging. Funding for trans-portation is received through a Section 5311 grant with Boone County from the Illinois Department of Transportation and Downstate Operation Assistance Program funds through Rockford Mass Transit District. Funds for transportation are also provided by the State of Illinois Donated Funds Initiative from Title XX of the Social Security Act administered by the Illi-nois Department of Human Services and the Illinois Department on Aging. Reimbursement is received from the Illinois Department on Aging for ser-vices provided under the Community Care Program. Funding is addition-ally provided by Boone County, the City of Belvidere, Belvidere Township, Poplar Grove Township, Bonus Township, Flora Township, Boone Town-ship, Spring Township, Caledonia Township, Manchester Township, and the United Way of Boone County. A significant portion of the BCCA budget is derived from contributions from individuals, groups, clients, users and fundraising projects. See our advertisement on page 37.
BOONE COUNTY HISTORICAL MUSEUM Hours: Tuesday-Friday 9-5, Saturday 9-3. The museum is located at 314 S. State St., in historic downtown Belvidere. Madison), was established in 1883 when General Allen Fuller donated $5,000 to the city to establish a library in memory of his daughter, Ida. Belvidere Township has 79 miles of road, 73 subdivisions with approximately 120 cul-de-sacs and 4 su bdivision pending outside the city limits of Belvidere.
Belvidere Township is involved in many programs throughout the year. We sponsor a Shred Day Program to destroy unwanted documents each Spring. We provide a drug collection site for unused and outdated medicines in the s ummer. In 2012 local voters authorized Belvidere Township to negotiate electric rates for residents and small businesses in the township.
For your safety Belvidere Township has five tornado sirens. The sirens will use the following tones to indicate weather warnings. These are used in Boone County. Neighboring communities may have other signals. Regular testing is the f irst Tuesday of each month.
Steady Tone: When the tornado siren goes off with a steady tone, and sounds for three (3) minutes (that is a long time), it means the Weather Bureau has issued a tornado warning. A tornado warning is issued when a tornado has been si ghted in the area. Go to the basement or nearest tornado shelter.
Tornado Watches: There is no siren signal for a tornado watch. If you get this message over the television or other media, it means the Weather Bureau has issued a tornado watch. Conditions are right for the formation of a tornado, but none has been sighted. Be alert for the warning siren.
