A MESSAGE FROM WILLIAM AUSTEN, PRESIDENT & CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

William F. AustenPresident and Chief Executive OfficerBemis Company, Inc.

Responsibility at Bemis begins with integrity and reliability – traits that have been a part of our company culture through years of growth and change. As our Company continues to evolve, we will continue to embrace change and uphold our values of ethics, innovation, accountability, and respect.

As you’ll see throughout this report, our activities, processes, and programs support our sustainable business approach. Some examples of this commitment include:

Corporate responsibility is a value embedded in everything that we do at Bemis Company. We believe that our people help make Bemis a valuable long-term investment, a prudent steward of the environment, and a good corporate citizen in our communities around the world. In combination with our three-pronged approach to fix, strengthen, and grow our business, at our core remains our goal to maximize the social, economic, and environmental benefits of our business as we position our Company for enduring success.

We continue to provide a safe and rewarding workplace for our employees. In 2016, Bemis’ global injury rates were 78% lower than our industry benchmark. Our teams have done an outstanding job of not only reducing injuries but also implementing preventative practices that help our employees work and live safely.

We continue to make sound business decisions that position Bemis as a valuable long-term investment. We continue to prioritize creating shareholder value and returning cash to shareholders, in part through our 30+ years of increasing dividend payments.

We continue to be good stewards of our resources as we have made tremendous progress since 2010 in successfully reducing waste to landfill and our use of process water, solvents, electricity, and fuel.

We are proud of the accomplishments we have made toward maximizing the social, economic, and environmental benefits of our business, but we will never stop our continuous improvement philosophy. Corporate responsibility is fundamental to delivering our business goals. Our consideration of responsible business practices, safety, the environment, and our communities guides our daily activities. We look forward to continuing to build value on a sustainable basis.

Global Risk Management Our Global Risk Management program includes a formal Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) process that enables Bemis to govern uncertainty and assess opportunities. ERM is practiced in both strategic and tactical operations of the business; as opportunities and risks are identified and assessed, careful consideration is made about which opportunities to pursue and which risks to mitigate – and investments are made accordingly. A formal evaluation of Bemis’ ERMprogram is performed periodically by the Chief Executive Officer, Chief Financial Officer, and General Counsel. An annual review of the ERM program is performed by Bemis’ Board of Directors and external auditors. Business Continuity Management Our enterprise-wide business continuity plan is an integrated component of the ERM process that is designed to prepare and enable Bemis to continue business-critical functions and meet customer expectations during any significant business disruption. The Bemis BeResilient program focuses on developing leaders who can serve customers in any situation. Skillful management of challenges that could interrupt normal operations requires skilled leaders in our plants and headquarters working seamlessly together to overcome the challenges we may confront. The Bemis BeResilient initiative trains leaders through hands-on workshops and exercises how to be resilient in any situation. We invest time and energy in practicing crisis and incident management to give ourselves the very best opportunity to meet all customer commitments regardless of the challenges to our normal operations. Risk assessment, incident management, and business continuity are owned by our operations team with leadership and support from our Global Risk Management team.

We operate for the long term with a disciplined approach to business management, as evidenced by our long history of profitability and ethical decision-making. It is our responsibility to make sound decisions, follow best practices, and report transparently to our stakeholders, and we do so through the framework of established principles and programs that guide our actions and reflect our core values.

Source Reduction Our flexible packaging products are designed to provide maximum protection using the least amount of material. Less material results in lighter-weight packagingthat uses less space, requiring fewer truckloads for transport. Source reduction also provides more efficient use of fuel, electricity, and water, and the conservation of raw materials lowers CO2 emissions during production. Bemis focuses great effort on our waste management programs. It is our policy not to send any hazardous waste to landfills. We recycle or recover the energy from our hazardous waste in a safe and responsible way to ensure minimal environmental impact. We develop films and adhesives that conserve resources and reduce packaging waste, while continuing to provide performance, value, and convenience.

Product SustainabilityBemis packaging protects products and extends their shelf life. When food stays fresh longer, food waste is reduced. From the field and farm to store shelves to consumers’ homes, food flavor, freshness, and quality matter. In the medical industry, rapidly evolving advancements require packaging that maintains product integrity and sterility. We understand that responsible packaging—packaging that uses the least amount of material— enhances product sustainability. Our polymerchemists and research and development experts develop film structures and packagingsolutions that use less material while providing protective barriers that sustain the quality that consumers expect and the medical industry requires.

Energy & Emissions Management

Our facilities generally operate with a small carbon footprint. Flexible packaging is transported in relatively lighweight rolls that take up less space in trucks and warehouses than glass jars or metal cans, reducing total energy usage throughout the distribution cycle. Bemis is further ensuring continuous improvement of our emissions and energy management through our environmental sustainability goals, detailed on page 14.

Waste Management & Recycling

Our facilities follow strict regulations and procedures with regard to waste management and disposal. Every Bemis facility has a waste minimization plan. Waste performance is tracked monthly and waste reduction activities are implemented to help reduce expenses related to raw materials, waste handling, and disposal. Our waste management processes and associated metrics are an integral part of our everyday operations. Approximately 80 percent of the waste we generate is reused or recycled. As of 2016, we have reduced our unit waste to landfill by 49 percent compared to our 2010 baseline.

WE ARE GOOD STEWARDS OF OUR RESOURCES

Solvent Use

In our manufacturing processes, solvents are used in various printing, coating, and laminating operations. Our EHS Management System monitors the use of solvents from selection through final disposition with agoal to minimize toxicity, volume of use, emissions, and handling concerns. We continuously look for new processes and approaches that minimize the need for solvents and reduce emissions. Since 2010, our use of solvents has decreased by 19 percent.

Electricity & Fuel Use

We continuously invest in projects that reduce energy usage, such as lighting upgrades and energy-efficient manufacturing equipment. Our use of electricity has decreased by 11 percent since 2010, and our use of fuel has decreased by 21 percent.

Water Conservation

We use a relatively small amount of water in our manufacturing processes. The majority of this water is reused in closed loop cooling systems. As of 2016, our process water discharge decreased by 69 percent, as compared to our 2010 baseline.

MAINTAIN & GAINGood environmental practices are woven into every part of our operating model. We have made tremendous progress toward the environmental sustainability goals we set out for ourselves in 2010. We have successfully reduced waste to landfill and our use of process water, solvents, electricity, and fuel. Given the meaningful progress in our goals, we are now simplifying our approach and extending our progress for the long term by adopting a “maintain and gain” philosophy. We aim to hold the progress (maintain) and look for opportunities to continually improve even further (gain) as we grow our business. We are proud of our accomplishments, but we will never stop our continuous improvement philosophy.
