BIFEM’s mission is to give the citizens of and visitors to our city access to the most innovative and virtuosic concert music from all around the world. In this first edition, music from 15 different countries will be performed across three recitals, eight concerts, two talks, a lecture, a workshop and a vernissage. Of these 16 elements, five are free, and nine are about the price of a cinema ticket. BIFEM’s promise is clear: our doors are open to you, if your ears and minds are open to us. Come explore.

ELIZABETH WELSH, Violin and Baroque Violin (Melbourne)With an equal passion for new music and early music, Violinist Elizabeth Welsh brings these worlds together in an exciting concert that features the world premiere of works by two important new compositional voices, Jeanette Little and Alexander Garsden (who will join Elizabeth as guitarist). Welsh also makes her performance début of the legendary Sciarrino Sei Capricci (Six Caprices) the most significant breakaway work for solo violin of the 20th Century.

SAMUEL DUNSCOMBE, Clarinet (San Diego)Samuel Dunscombe is fast becoming a Clarinettist and composer reputed for his engaging, dynamic electro-acoustic recitals. In this BIFEM 2013 exclusive, Dunscombe presents a terrific programme of mostly Australian premiere performances that include his recent composition Poetic Cartography for Clarinet and Rainforest, which has become a USA and Asian festival hit in 2013. Now based in San Diego, this recital is a rare chance to see Dunscombe performing in Australia.

MATTEO CESARI, Flute (Paris)“Outstanding” Sunday Times

BIFEM in association with Bendigo Art Gallery is proud to present the Australian début performance of Italian born virtuoso flautist Matteo Cesari in a dynamic programme of works for solo flute and bass flute. Cesari has won awards and scholarships including the Kranichsteiner Musikpreis in Darmstadt. Currently based in France completing a doctorate at the Conservatoire in Paris and University Paris IV Sorbonne, his teachers have included Mario Caroli and Sophie Cherrier. Cesari has performed with ensembles including Ensembe Intercontemporain, L’Itinéraire and Nieuw Ensemble and has worked with leading contemporary artists including Pierre Boulez, Barbara Hannigan, Peter Eötvös, Salvatore Sciarrino, Ivan Fedele, Brian Ferneyhough, Stefano Gervasoni, Bruno Mantovani and Michael Finnissy.

The meditative work by Austrian composer Klaus Lang is another BIFEM Australian premiere. With a post-Feldman sense of mood and time, Lang creates a unique sound world, at once familiar and new, trance-like, yet electric. Eloquently performed by Melbourne ensemble Six Degrees with guest flautist Melissa Doecke, einfalt.stille (simplicity.quiet.) is a spellbinding work from an important composer, whose work is mostly unheard outside Europe.

Sydney exploratory music champions Ensemble Offspring appear for the first time in regional Victoria presenting an energetic concert structured as mini-portraits of the group’s two founding composers and 20th century iconoclast Iannis Xenakis. Offspring are joined in this programme by guest violinist James Cuddeford.

BIFEM proudly presents the exclusive Australasian premiere of US composer Morton Feldman’s epic String Quartet No.2. This quartet, which plays without break for more than six hours, is a free event for audiences to come and go, or to settle in for a once in a lifetime experience. This concert will be one of the most talked about Australian musical events of the year.

An intense electric hour of this work by Italian composer Pierluigi Billone makes for an unforgettable inaugural BIFEM midnight show. 1+1=1 showcases the remarkable talent of clarinettists Aviva Endean (also playing with Argonaut) and Samuel Dunscombe (a BIFEM 2013 featured Recitalist) following their successful collaboration at Tokyo Wonder Site Academy this year. Dunscombe and Endean present this dramatic Bass Clarinet duo under BIFEM’s special events umbrella.

NATASCHA STELLMACH (MELBOURNE/Berlin)In 2008 Natascha Stellmach installed a joint in a commercial Berlin gallery, containing the alleged ashes of Kurt Cobain. An international call was sent out – via press release – inviting six members of the public to join her in a private, undocumented ritual to explore commemoration and attachment. This ignited public and media furore and interest. Complete Burning Away investigates the emotional responses associated with idolatry and critiques the role of the artist, the media and contemporary art in society. This site-specific installation includes six of the ten works. Presented by La Trobe University Visual Arts Centre, BIFEM is proud to host the vernissage of this talented, dynamic Australian artist and her important work under our special events umbrella.

Australian-born pianist, composer and musicologist Alistair Noble has taught at The Australian National University since 2006, where he has also served as Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Social Sciences. His primary research area is mid-20th century music, with a special focus on the work of Morton Feldman, Stefan Wolpe and Edgard Varèse. Drawing from his new book Composing Ambiguity: The Early Music of Morton Feldman, Dr Noble will discuss the remarkable consistency of Feldman’s compositional method, tracing links in compositional language from his early works in the 1950s to his late works of the 1980s, including the Second String Quartet.

BIFEM invites you to spend Saturday afternoon with Benjamin Kolaitis and Richie Cyngler from OpenLAB, learning how to build your own mini Synthesiser.

Make a simple oscillator and learn how to control it using all manner of weird and wonderful things like pot plants, light and even touch! All you need is some imagination and enthusiasm. All workshop materials provided.

OpenLAB is a monthly forum, based in Melbourne, where artists, musicians, engineers, performers and designers can come together and share their work and creative passions. Soprano sensation Jessica Aszodi continues to forge a stellar career as a unique and dexterous voice of power and beauty. Aszodi returns to Australia for an exclusive Bendigo performance of her lauded interpretation of Morton Feldman’s iconic work Three Voices.

Completed the year before Feldman’s Second String Quartet, Three Voices is the perfect piece to close BIFEM 2013: an echo of the previous night’s epic quartet, and a foreshadowing of technology-led works that will form a core part of the BIFEM 2014 programme.
