The RouteFinder Internet security appliance is an integrated VPN gateway/firewall designed to maximize network security without compromisingnetwork performance. It uses data encryption, user authentication and theInternet to securely connect telecommuters, remote offices, customers orsuppliers to the corporate office while avoiding the cost of private leasedlines or dial-up charges. The browser-based interface eases VPNconfiguration and management. The VPN functionality is based on IPSecand PPTP protocols and uses Triple DES 168-bit encryption to ensure thatyour information remains private. The RouteFinder firewall security utilizesStateful Packet Inspection, and provides content filtering, as well asoptional email anti-virus protection.

HighlightsRouteFinder Applications. The RouteFinder combines

Virtual Private Networking (VPN), firewall, email anti-virus protection* and content filtering in one box. It is acost-effective, easy to manage solution that is ideal forthe small to medium business looking to add one or allof the following applications to their network:

Remote User VPN. The client-to-LAN VPNapplication replaces traditional dial-in remote accessby allowing a remote user to connect to thecorporate LAN through a secure tunnel over theInternet. The advantage is that a remote user canmake a local call to an Internet Service Provider,without sacrificing the company’s security, asopposed to a long distance call to the corporateremote access server.

Branch Office VPN. The LAN-to-LAN VPNapplication sends network traffic over the branchoffice Internet connection instead of relying ondedicated leased line connections. This can savethousands of dollars in line costs and reduce overallhardware and management expenses.

Firewall Security. As businesses shift from dial-up orleased line connections to always-on broadbandInternet connections, the network becomes morevulnerable to Internet hackers. The RouteFinderprovides a full-featured firewall based on StatefulPacket Inspection technology and the NAT protocolto provide security from intruders attempting toaccess the office LAN.

E-mail Anti-Virus Protection. An optional e-mailvirus protection subscription ensures the network isprotected against the latest virus outbreaks.

Plug-and-Play Security Appliance. The RouteFinderplugs in at the Internet connection of each office. Itprovides three independent network interfaces (LAN,WAN and DMZ) that separate the protected officenetwork from the Internet while offering an optionalpublic network for hosting Web, e-mail or ftp servers.Each network interface is independently monitored andvisually displayed on the front of the RouteFinder.

Secure VPN Connections. The RouteFinder uses IPSecand PPTP industry standard protocols, data encryption,user authentication, and the Internet to provide high-performance, secure VPN connections. For LAN-to-LAN connectivity, the RouteFinder utilizes the IPSecprotocol to provide up to 256 tunnels with strong 168-bit 3DES encryption using IKE and PSK keymanagement. In addition, it provides very highperformance with 15M bps of 3DES encryptionthroughput. For client-to-LAN connectivity,Multi-Tech provides optional IPSec client software.The RouteFinder also supports remote users that wantto use the PPTP VPN client built into the Windowsoperating system. This provides 40-bit or 128-bitencryption, user name and password authentication andsupport for up to 128 PPTP tunnels.

State-of-the-Art Firewall Security. The RouteFinderprovides network layer security utilizing StatefulPacket Inspection, the sophisticated firewall technologyfound in large enterprise firewalls, to protect thenetwork against intruders and Denial of Service (DoS)attacks. It also uses Network Address Translation(NAT) to hide internal, non-routable IP addresses andallows internal hosts with unregistered IP addresses tofunction as Internet-reachable servers. In addition tonetwork layer security, it provides application levelsecurity using SMTP, HTTP, DNS and SOCKS proxies.The RouteFinder also utilizes filters to block specificInternet content to protect against viruses, dangerousActiveX controls, Java, Javascript, and Cookies. Anautomatic update feature provides the highest level ofsecurity by automatically downloading and installing thelatest system software and security patches protectingagainst any newly discovered hacker attacks with asingle click.

Content Filtering. The RouteFinder includes a one-yearURL content filtering subscription. It utilizesSurfControl®'s content categorization list, the world'slargest database of Internet content, which includes 5million Web sites covering over 900 million Web pages.Daily updates of categorized sites are available fordownload. In addition, it includes URL access and denyreporting. The subscription can easily be renewed on anannual basis.

Optional VPN Client Software. Multi-Tech providesan easy-to-use IPSec VPN client software thattransparently secures Internet communicationsanytime, anywhere. VPN client software is ideal forbusiness users who travel frequently or work fromhome. It provides secure remote access through theRouteFinder VPN gateway for applications such asremote access, file transfer, e-mail, Web browsing,messaging or IP telephony. Encryption andauthentication operations are completely transparentto the end user. In general, IPSec provides strongerencryption than PPTP resulting in better overallsecurity.

SOHO RouteFinder. The SOHO RouteFinder is idealfor the small branch office or telecommuter who needssecure access to the corporate LAN. In addition toproviding a WAN Ethernet port for DSL or cablebroadband Internet access, it also offers both client-to-LAN and LAN-to-LAN VPN connectivity based onthe IPSec protocol. It supports up to 5 IPSec tunnelsand provides 3DES encryption with 700K bpsthroughput. See features comparison chart on the backof this datasheet.

E-mail Anti-Virus Protection. Computer viruses areone of the leading security threats to Internet-connected networks. Users can unknowingly downloadand launch dangerous viruses that can damage data orcause computer crashes. Viruses can also be used asdelivery mechanisms for hacking tools, compromisingthe security of the network, even if a firewall isinstalled. An optional e-mail virus protectionsubscription utilizes a high-performance, ICSA-tested,anti-virus engine which checks both incoming andoutgoing e-mail for viruses in real-time. Automaticanti-virus updates are downloaded at user-definedintervals to ensure protection is current. The e-mailanti-virus protection can be easily renewed on anannual basis. User Authentication. To increase the level of security,user identity can be verified before access to Internetservices is permitted. The RouteFinder supportsauthentication at a local user database as well as atexternal user databases, like Windows 2000 or Radiusserver.

Web Caching Server. To enhance performance, theRouteFinder also provides web caching. By storingfrequently visited web sites on a local drive, web surfingperformance can be improved by as much as 50%.

Robust, Easy-to-Use Management. The RouteFinderincludes robust management support allowing anetwork administrator to securely manage the deviceseither through a web browser or at the command line.The browser-based option uses the HTTP or HTTPSprotocol, also known as SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) toprovide 128-bit encryption to secure the managementsession. The command line interface is accessible viaSSH (Secure Shell) and supports SCP (Secure Copy).

Reporting.The RouteFinder also includes a suite ofintegrated monitoring and reporting tools that helpadministrators troubleshoot the Internet securitysystem and report to management the usage of theInternet. This includes reporting on system uptime,hardware and network utilization. HTTP and SMTPproxy reports provide information about any actions
