Southern Vermont Orchards is a family owned orchard since 1973, located on the east side of Mount Anthony just two miles south of Downtown Bennington, Vermont. Famous locally for its retail store, The Apple Barn, owner Lia Diamond has been helping make Bennington a desti nati on since she took over operati ons in 2004.

November Chamber Mixer
President’s MessageWe had a FABULOUS Fall Foliage this year!!! We are truly blessed to live in such a gorgeous area.
As you know, the Chamber has begun working on the 2015 Bennington Area Guide. Last year the Chamber staff did a tremendous job with the marketing piece. It shows Bennington in a very positive light and spotlights the “Quality of Life” that we are known for. The Area Guide is a great place to advertise for attracting tourists and travelers into your businesses. 70,000 copies of the Bennington Area Guide were published and distribut-ed to Vermont Welcome Centers, the Chamber of Commerce, member
business, and other Tourist hotspots. The Chamber normally uses the entire quantity that is ordered…and we have been able to keep the pricing the same as last year. I highly recommend taking out an ad in the guide, which also gets your business included on the map insert that many of those tourists use to navigate town. In the coming year, we are also plan-ning to order an additional supply of the map inserts to keep up with the demand of our visitors.
Deadline for the ad order is January 15, 2015. Please feel free to call Marie Shutts (802-447-3311) or email her with any questions. ([email protected])

A former social worker and public school teacher, Gómez first made a name for himself by winning at the Apollo Theater’s infamous Amateur Night and later as a member of the renowned Nuyorican Poets Café’s slam team. In 2008, he collaborated with Tony Award-winning tap dance legend Savion Glover on Broadway.

The Chamber will be sending out the Ad Insertion Information to secure your place in the 2015/2016 Area Guide. Advertisers must be Members in Good Standing and submit the ad copy according to the schedule as well as pay by the due date. Our Area Guide is a great mar-keting tool. It has wide distribution, electronic version on our website, is taken to Trade Shows, and is mailed across the country and to Canada. Our website hits have multiplied exponentially
this year. The Welcome Center has enjoyed a continuing rise in foot traffic. Be a part of the expanding good stories about Bennington. Marie Shutts at 802-447-3311 is our lead on the Area Guide so contact her with any questions on how to get your ad in the publication. We need to start now to get the project process completed shortly after the holiday season.
The Vermont Chamber President, Betsy Bishop is coming to Bennington County on December 10th. She is meeting with Manchester in the morning and coming here for a luncheon meet-ing. This is a Legislative Preview to go over topics that concern our businesses. The luncheon meeting will be held at the Mt Anthony Country Club at Noon on December 10, 2014. Chamber Member Tickets are $20/person, non-Members are $25/person. We are inviting other business organizations who sit at the Bennington Econom-ic Development Partnership table so that we can offer a multitude of issues for discussion. Betsy Bishop will facilitate and guide us through the various topics. She will also share the issues the Vermont Chamber has brought forward. This should help us all understand what Bennington’s “Ask” can look like for the upcoming legislative session.
PLEASE RSVP by December 8, 2014 to Marie at 802-447-3311 so the lunch can be planned.
Our Director, Joann Erenhouse has been ap-pointed to another term on the Vermont Rail Advisory Council. The Council holds regular meetings every quarter in Montpelier. Most recently the Rail Division has been developing its 2015 Rail Plan. Statewide cuts in budgets and the unsuccessful bid for the Track II Rutland to Burlington Passenger Service Grant have made the future of Bennington and Manchester rail projects look less likely to move forward in the near future.
With that said, there may be other funding op-portunities down the road. Keeping Bennington at the table must be a priority.
Remember to request Area Guides for your business for the Fall Foliage and Holiday season. Pick them up from the Chamber Office on Veterans Memorial Drive.
A Night of One Act Operas: Menotti’s: The Telephone
and Toscano’s: The Interview.
“The Telephone” is a heartwarming 20-minute comedy about a young couple. HE- wants to propose, SHE - just got a new telephone, which she won’t stop using. It will have you laugh, cry and remember fondly similar events in your own life!
“Made In America, Episode 1” deals with the ongoing Middle East conflict. Two women: Anat, a Jewish woman living in West Jerusa-lem, and Alzubra, a Muslim woman converted from a Presbyterian Maryland upbringing and now living in East Jerusalem, meet and share a dual tragedy. As their friendship grows they decide to create an organization called, Mu-Je-Lif, Muslim and Jewish Women for Life. Concerned, but, not overly so, the U.S. Dept. of Defense sends a journalist, to hear their story. What follows, The Interview, transforms all three of them. DISCUSSION : As part of the performance there will be an audience dis-cussion, question-and-answer period with the cast, pianist and conductor.
Both operas will be performed in English, and because both are short, these could be a per-fect introduction to opera for those who have shied away from that musical form.
Saturday November 8th at 7:30PM Sunday November 9th at 9PM Tickets are $25, Students $10

Public Forum at the CAPA Building, Bennington College November 13 - 6:30 p.m.
The Transportati on Board at 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 13
will hold a Bennington public forum specifi cally
designed to engage young adults (ages 18-34)
in a conversati on about what Vermont needs to
do transportati on-wise to meet their needs and
be an att racti ve place for them to live, work and
raise a family.
The forum is one of eight the Board is holding
around the state, and will be held in The Sym-
posium at the Center for the Advancement of
Public Acti on at Bennington College.
Nati onal studies indicate that young adults drive
less than their older counterparts, and that
their transportati on priories diff er from those of
previous generati ons. The Board wants to discuss
this with young adults to determine how future
transportati on policy can be shaped to best
positi on Vermont to meet their needs and thrive
in the economic marketplace.
For those who cannot att end, comment can also
be submitt ed via email. For more informati on,
