DNY 1000C: Discover New York

Professor ConnFall Semester 2019

20

• Professor Conn’s Global Passport students toured historic central Rome on a walking tour they designed and researched.

•Our group administrator helped our student guides as they planned the tour.

•The experience helped students learn to navigate Roman streets from the very beginning of our trip.

Learning, Independence, and Support

21

• Students in my sections of Discover New York study historical immigration and migration patterns in New York City during the semester.

• When we’re in Rome, we learn how immigration and migration shaped ancient Rome; medieval and Renaissance Rome; and contemporary Rome.

Academic Connections Between New York City and Rome

22

• My students served at food pantries, immigration assistance centers, education outreach centers, and other locations in New York City.

• In Rome, we served at the Joel NafumaRefugee Center, where we interacted with refugees from Angola, Libya, Afghanistan, and other places.

•Then we compared contemporary migration patterns and experiences of the two cities.

•Many of my students told me that our service at the Refugee Center was the most important part of our trip.
