it’s that magical time of year once more.as we gather with our families and friends, the holidays bring special moments we’ll always treasure. But making those memories takes planning—and this issue of Bergen Health & Life can help. sprinkled through our pages, you’ll find advice you can trust from pros and experienced hosts alike. check out the tips marked with the snowflake. ❄

look glamorous from head to toe—with minimal fuss (page 40). throw a festive, three-course dinner party designed by a trio of top Bergen county chefs (page 56). or, if that seems too ambitious, match two potential soul-mates—coffee and chocolate—for an easy dessert party (page 50). and throw a bash for the kids that will give you an excuse to mingle with other parents (page 54).

of course, it’s a challenge to get through this temp-tation-filled season without putting on an extra pound or two. in “holidays needn’t go to Waist” (page 34), you’ll learn strategies to avoid weight gain—and still have fun.

are you hooked on House? that popular but quirky fox tV medical drama has folks talking—especially now that the hero has “hooked up” with fellow medic lisa cuddy. on page 38, actress lisa edelstein spills the beans about playing cuddy—and about her Jersey origins.

We hope this issue inspires you to make some great holiday memories. as for me, this magazine’s readers, ad-vertisers and my amazing staff have helped me create some incredible memories of my own. this letter marks my last as editor in chief, a position i’ve held since 2002. But i’m not going far. my new role as Vice President and editor in chief of the custom media group will enable me to work on new products—print and digital—related to the wonderful brands we’ve created, and i’m looking forward to it. so thanks for the memories, and happy holidays!

YOUR LOCAL GUIDE TO TRENDS, TREASURES, PEOPLE & WELL-KEPT SECRETS

BergenB U Z Z

Tomato FEVERIf the chilly weather has you longing for the

juicy goodness of homegrown Jersey toma-

toes, you’re in luck! Bergenfi eld-based TWO GUYS FOOD GROUP (201-954-6051, www.

twoguysfoodgroup.com) has the perfect solu-

tion: canned tomato sauces made with only

Garden State tomatoes.

The idea for the year-old company—

run by longtime friends and Bergen natives

Scott Stark and David Stoff, who met while

studying hotel and restaurant management

at the University of Massachusetts—came

from Stark’s experience selling local farmers’

products through his wholesale produce busi-

ness. “I thought, ‘Why not extend the Jersey

tomato season a bit by making a sauce that

can be enjoyed year-round?’” says Stark.

Sold locally at Fairway Market in Para-

mus, Foodtown in North Arlington and Whole

Foods in Ridgewood, Paramus and Edgewa-

ter, and online through the company’s web-

site, sauce varieties include marinara, tomato-

basil, garden vegetable and “spicy”—a zesty

blend of crushed or whole Jersey tomatoes,

California garlic, oregano, Israeli basil and

crushed red-pepper fl akes.

The sauces retail for between $3.99

and $5.99 per 25-ounce can, and they’re low in

sodium and gluten-free with no added sugars.

A ticket on the Polar Express may be a bit out of reach, but you can give your

little ones the next best thing this holiday season with the Hawthorne-based

Volunteer Railroaders Association’s SANTA CLAUS TRAIN RIDES (973-238-

0555, www.santatrain.net)—fun-fi lled train rides in holiday-decorated pas-

senger coaches. The best part: Old Saint Nick, Mrs. Claus and several cartoon

characters will be on board to greet children and pose for pictures.

Embarking from the Glen Rock Boro Hall station on December 4 at

9:30 a.m., noon and 2:30 p.m., the hour-and-a-half rides run to Suffern

and back on the New Jersey Transit Main/Bergen County Line. Passengers

can enjoy views of the Ramapo River in Rockland County, and each child

is given a candy cane, a stuffed animal and a coloring book.

Paramus resident Judy O’Reilly has taken the ride for the past

two years with her two grandsons, now ages 2 and 5. “The experience

is just magical for the children, and the staff does a marvelous job,”

she says. “It really sets the tone for the holidays.”

Tickets cost $13 for adults and $9 for children under 12; proceeds

help restore the Hawthorne train station. (Infants under age 1 ride free.)

You can purchase tickets by phone, by mail or via the event’s website.

(There’s a 50-cent discount for tickets purchased online, and another

50 cents off each ticket for groups of 25 or more.)

“We usually sell out, so it’s best to buy your tickets in advance,” re-

ports K.C. Smith, president of the Volunteer Railroaders Association.

Say, CHEESE!What’s a holiday gathering without an irresistible platter of fi ne fromage? Happily, you’ll fi nd an abundance of delicious cheeses from around the world at CHEZ CHEESE (201-568-2050, www.chezcheeze.com), a 1,200-square-foot gourmet cheese shop and eatery in Tenafl y.

“About 75 percent of our cheeses are imported, mostly from Europe, though we do offer cheeses from different regions of this country,” says co-owner Pat Lamson, who runs the shop with her brother, Peter Quinn. “We cut the cheeses fresh and offer samples of anything you’d like to try.”

Among the shop’s offerings are Camembert from France, Montagnolo from Bavaria, aged Prima Donna Gouda from Holland and Vermont cheddar. The shop also makes about seven cheeses in-house, including a black caviar and scallion log and a sun-dried tomato and basil torte, which consists of goat cheese, Swiss cheese, sun-dried tomatoes and pesto. For a delicious sampling, you can purchase cheese platters for $45 to $85 each.

The shop also offers a lunch and catering menu of freshly made soups, sandwiches (not necessarily cheese) and other prepared foods.

Sweet treats GALORE

Looking to make the holiday season sweeter? Check out the mouthwatering chocolate confections at CRITCHLEY’S

CANDIES in River Edge (201-967-1800, www.critch leyschocolates.com).

“We’ve got just about any seasonal mold you can think of, from turkeys for Thanksgiving to Santa Clauses for Christ-

mas to Easter bunnies in the spring,” says owner Steve Engle-berg of the 57-year-old shop, open from September through June

each year. Other popular candies in December include butter

crunch, Figaro truffl es, vanilla and chocolate fudge and hand-dipped, dark chocolate-covered strawberries—the shop’s best seller. Watching your diet? Critchley’s also offers 25 variet-ies of sugar-free candies. (Fudge and pure chocolate con-

fections cost $14.98 per pound; specialty chocolates, such as those fi lled with fruit or nuts, cost $21.98 per pound.)

For a tasty gift idea, order a candy basket ($28.98 to $150.98) or box ($4.98 to $49.98), or choose from a variety of kid-friendly treats, such as chocolate ballerinas, jet planes, trucks, soccer balls, baseballs and footballs.

How we met: “One day when

my husband was on a golfing

trip, my daughter talked me

into looking at puppies in a

pet store. When Duke ran to

me and started to cough, I

melted. I put him right on my

credit card.”

Dressing up: “I like to buy

Duke costumes for the holi-

days. He’s been Batman and

a leprechaun for Halloween,

and he loves wearing his

Santa outfit on Christmas.”

On the town: “I often carry

Duke in a big pocketbook and

take him shopping with me.

Although he’s usually very

quiet, he’ll bark and growl if

anyone comes near our car in

the lot.”

ChoColate, Jersey styleIf there’s a more tempting way to indulge your Garden State pride, we don’t know it. Decadent 2¼-ounce JerSey GIrl ChoColate BarS by Chester-based Jersey Brands (908-879-3072, www.jerseygirlchocolate.com), retailing for about $2 each, promise to leave your taste buds in a blissful state indeed.

“I felt the name conjured up a very positive image of women in New Jersey,” says founder Steve Swanbeck of Chester, who started the business four years ago. “and many female customers like the name—especially those who grew up in the state.”

the bars come in four varieties: dark chocolate, milk chocolate, milk chocolate and peanut butter, and caramel and milk chocolate. you can purchase them at several stores around the county, such as Demarest

Farms in hillsdale, abma’s Farm in Wyckoff and happy tuesday in ridgewood, or on the company’s website. (Check the site for all store locations.)

Besides chocolate bars, the company also peddles 2-ounce wrapped pieces of fudge made with Belgian chocolate and Dutch cocoa ($1.75 apiece), known as Jersey Shore Fudge.

It may share a facility with the YMCA, but the YWCA of Bergen CountY

in Ridgewood (201-444-5600, www.ywcabergencounty.org) has had the special

mission of supporting working women and their families since 1920. As the group

marks its 90th anniversary this year, it’s celebrating its rich history—and looking to

the future.

“The organization was established to help young women who were

moving east to enter the workforce,” explains Donna Gould, director of public

relations, marketing and membership. “Many of them came without their families

and didn’t have any kind of support system. The YWCA provided hot meals,

helped them find safe places to live and offered opportunities to socialize.”

Today the organization has 5,000 members and provides childcare ser-

vices, day camps and several health and fitness programs. It also operates the

Rape Crisis Center (hotline: 201-487-2227)—the only one of its kind in the county.

This year’s many special events have included the first annual “Knowledge

is Power” conference in March, which was co-sponsored by Bergen

Community College and featured 30 panelists and speakers who

provided advice on such topics as financial management, man-

aging stress and making decisions on healthcare options. The

conference will be held again in April 2011.

what a fantastic county to live in! Bergen’s varied delights were on display this fall at our third annual Bergenfest at the estate at florentine Gar-dens in River vale. the event celebrated winners of Ber-gen Health & Life’s Readers’ choice awards, and a good time was had by all—thanks in part to the fact that many winning foods proved irresistible. turn the page to check out other stellar happenings in a busy season: the Jcc on the Palisades Golf classic; the Mahwah Regional chamber of commerce’s 19th annual Golf outing, followed by its 2010 humanitarian Dinner; and the tenafly nature center’s wine tasting and “Music under the stars” event.

You can tell from the nip in the air and the car-ols on the airwaves: Most of us will soon be celebrating with

family, friends—and fattening food. From Thanksgiving pump-

kin pie through eggnog on New Year’s Eve, this sumptuous season is the calendar’s biggest threat

to your trim waistline. And while a New England Journal of Medicine study a few years ago had some

good news (we don’t pack on as many pounds as we fear), it brought a warning, too: The weight we do add during this season tends to stay on.

So must you be a stay-at-home sourpuss, munching on celery? No, insists Janet R. Laubgross, a Fairfax, Vir-ginia, clinical psychologist who specializes in weight man-agement. You can be socially active and still face the scales happily, she says, if you heed fi ve tips:

1. PLAN.“It’s essential to mentally prepare for events you know will be stressful, such as Christmas dinner with the in-laws,” says Laubgross. “If you gear up beforehand, you’ll feel less need to soothe yourself with food.”

TIP: “If you’re drinking wine with dinner, wait until your entrée is served to take the fi rst sip. You’ll be more sensitive to your body’s fullness cues and less likelyto overeat.” ~ LAURA CIPULLO, REGISTERED DIETITIAN, ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS

Restaurant meals are easy, because most eateries now post their menus online. Decide what to order in advance, so you won’t be tempted while sitting at thetable—keeping in mind that fried foods and butter gen-erally should be avoided.

Also, never leave home very hungry—or very full. “If you’ve starved yourself beforehand hoping to save calories, you’re likely to gobble every bite in sight!” warns Laubgross. On the other hand, she adds, you should also avoid the otherextreme—a pre-dinner binge: “No matter how stuffed you are, you’ll still be tempted to indulge in tasty morsels.” Your best bet: Prep for an evening fête by eating a sensible lunch, followed by a light snack two hours before you leave home for the social event.

Finally, when you see a party spread, ask yourself, “Which of these foods do I really like?” Permit yourself small portions of these and enjoy them to the hilt—then pass on the other fattening items.

2. DE-STRESS.“I know this is easier said than done,” says Laubgross, “but when we’re stressed we tend to overeat and overdrink.” Work on keeping pressure levels down by sticking to your regular routine as much as possible.

It’s also perfectly acceptable to avoid high-strain sit-uations. “We all have notions about what we’re supposed to do, yet in reality life presents us with only a few real obliga-tions,” says Laubgross. This means it’s OK to skip certain parties or leave others early, especially if the temptation to overindulge is high.

Does shopping in a teeming mall make you want to tear your hair out? Try buying presents online or from a catalog. “And remember: It’s not necessary to get theabsolute perfect gift for every single person you know,” says Laubgross.

When all else fails, just take a break. “Excuse your-self from cocktail hour at your family’s house, and step outside for a breath of air,” says Laubgross. Then you can rejoin the group feeling refreshed.

3. SWEAT.Yes, we know—during this busy time it’s easier than ever to let your exercise routine slip. Don’t! Even if it means break-ing up workout sessions, with 15 minutes on the treadmill in the morning and a 20-minute walk after work, keeping active will help you burn excess calories and thus stay trim.

But it goes beyond the digital “calories burned”display. “Exercise also boosts confi dence and helps lower anxiety,” says Laubgross. “Because many of us deal with feelings of social uncertainty by medicating with food, regu-lar physical activity may just help you avoid bingeing at the New Year’s Eve buffet table.”

4. BE FIRM.“If a hostess offers you a second helping of her famous—and fattening—chocolate caramel cream pie, all you have to do is say, ‘No thank you,’” says Laubgross.

A small voice inside may whisper that it’s rude to say no. After all, food is a symbol of love and a currency of hospitality. So have a smile and ready answer: You need to take care of you. Of course, it’s the job of a host or hostess to make sure you’re offered everything you might wish to consume. But you’d be surprised how few parties will stand or fall based on the amount you personally eat.

“In most cases, I don’t think it’s good to get into a litany of excuses about why you’re passing on that sugary cocktail because you end up apologizing for yourself,” says Laubgross. And you can always compliment a spread without partaking.

5. KEEP MOVING.Remember: If you’re truly tempted by a favorite treat, enjoy it and then move on. “Otherwise you’re likely to overeat the rest of the week, unconsciously trying to get a taste of that delicacy you really wanted,” says Laubgross.

Don’t park yourself in front of the chow cart or dessert table. Circulate, and think of why you decided to attend this social event in the fi rst place. Enjoy your loved ones, friends—and possible friends-to-be. Isn’t that what truly makes the holi-day season special? ■

TIP: “Fill half your plate with non-starchy vegetables, including salad, and eat them fi rst. The fi ber will help fi ll you up and leave less room for those dangerous higher-calorie foods.” ~ SARAH AMER, REGISTERED DIETITIAN, WOODCLIFF LAKE

lisa edelstein isn’t a doctor; she only plays one on tV. But the medical milieu of the Fox drama House is familiar turf for the 44-year-old actress, who grew up in Wayne. “i’ve always loved medicine, and i was around it as a child in new Jersey,” she says, noting that her dad, alvin edelstein, M.d., served for years as chairman of chil-ton Memorial hospital’s Pediatrics department.

edelstein portrays dr. lisa cuddy, girlfriend of the show’s scruffy, cranky title character. “i know the producers are taking this relationship seriously and exploring it,” she says. “i think a lot of viewers wanted it to happen and feel it’s a great way of telling a new story.”

the actress concedes that her character “is certainly not making choices that will simplify her life.” and she has-tens to explain that she herself is way different from her fel-low lisa: “i’m much more relaxed than cuddy.”

still, there’s a feisty independence in the tV medic that wasn’t much of a stretch. edelstein grew up in a tradi-tional Jewish family, but began to make her own distinctive choices early. at 15 she embraced vegetarianism—never to look back—and at 16 she was recruited to fill a cheerleader opening for donald trump’s new Jersey Generals team in the old U.s. Football league.

“they lost one of their cheerleaders, so they called my dance school in new Jersey and i was recommended to fill in,” edelstein explains. she worked six home games—then organized a protest against the team for making cheerleaders

stand in their uniforms in bars—in effect, a cheerleaders’ strike. after graduating from Wayne Valley high school in

1984, she moved across the hudson to study theatre at new york University, then became a fixture in the city’s club scene.

edelstein wrote, composed and starred in the musical Positive Me about the aids crisis. that project showed her independent streak, and so did her early tV gigs—as Jason alexander’s risotto-loving conquest on Seinfeld, rob lowe’s call-girl date on The West Wing and a transsexual on Ally McBeal.

today she maintains a new york residence but lives mostly in l.a., with her two dogs, shazam and Kapow. she’s devoted to daily ashtanga yoga, swimming and taking walks with her dogs. edelstein recently went sugar- and gluten-free and says, “i feel less bloated, and my digestion has improved.” she cites pad thai noodles as a go-to pasta substitute and lemon- grass soup as a favorite snack.

the actress loves traveling, with Japan, thailand and india among recent destinations. “it helps put things in perspec-tive,” she says. “los angeles can be very isolating, so it’s im-portant to get out. new Jersey didn’t have that isolating feel.”

edelstein says she doesn’t know what lies ahead for the house-cuddy amour “beyond what we’re shooting right now.” But it’s a safe bet that this ex-Garden stater will con-tinue to show tart-tongued independence, onscreen and off.

“i’m a work in progress,” she declares. n

Actress Lisa Edelstein fondly recalls her Wayne, N.J., childhood in

a family that was “probably more traditional than anyone else in

town. We attended temple services and observed all the Jewish

holidays.” She shares memories with Bergen Health & Life:

Fave Hanukkah gift: “A pair of Sassoon jeans—very exciting. I still

remember opening them in our New Jersey living room.”

Holiday eats: “My grandparents lived in Coney Island; that was a

favorite spot of mine—we’d go there for dinner to celebrate. My grand-

mother made good rugula, and I recall her making gefilte fish.

But I never really liked latkes or hamantaschen.”

Fast forward: “I try to remember to light the candles on all eight

nights. My parents gave me a good foundation of tradition.”

As Dr. Lisa Cuddy, Lisa Edelstein

matches wits, medical insights

and romantic bon mots with series

star Hugh Laurie on TV’s House.

Put on your party best

“i have nothing to wear!” it’s a com-mon refrain this season. getting decked out in a dra-matic party frock is exciting, but the pressure to find the perfect outfit can leave you feeling more like a desperate housewife than a modern-day cinderella.

the trick is to play with proportion by com-bining a fitted top with a more voluminous skirt. a tailored bodice will accentuate your figure, and a flirty skirt will make you feel like dancing the night away without sacrificing comfort. no need to stick with your favorite little black dress when any color works. experts say it’s more about the fabric and fit as long as you wear a hue that suits your skin tone.

in terms of jewelry, less is more, but that doesn’t mean unassuming. think minimal, but striking, choosing one statement piece—chunky earrings, oversize cocktail rings or a dazzling choker.

to simply your search, we’ve put together a memorable ensemble sure to have you sparkling as bright as any holiday lights.

TIP: “With statement jewelry, wear a simple, solid-color dress or suit with a sweetheart, oval or square neckline to create a backdrop that lets the piece shine.”

TIP: Want to look dressed up rather than made up? Choose a rich matte lipstick in plum or red. Outline your upper and lower lids and apply two coats ofmascara. Go easy on the blush, and finish with a shimmering jewel powderfor a subtle sheen.

Provocative as its name, Swarovski’s stunning Maniac necklace,

$500, is ruthenium-plated and features crystal satin, jet hematite

and jet crystal beads for an enchanting look of holiday elegance.

Complement it with this sea green, pure silk halter dress from

and a ruched empire waist with a cluster of rosettes.

THERE’S NO MAGIC ELIXIR FOR CREATING A festive holiday table other than ensuring that it conveys the warmth you feel for your nearest and dearest and reflects your personal style.

“Table decoration is meant to be viewed from all sides,” explains internationally acclaimed interior design-er Alberto Pinto, author of Alberto Pinto: Table Settings (Rizzoli, 2010). “Three elements preside over its composi-tion: the type of event to be celebrated, the volume of the bouquets—which must be in scale with the size of the tables—and finally the colors of the flowers, which must mesh with those of the porcelain.”

Color, fabrics and lighting are the building blocks upon which your fête will be set. Red, always a hallmark hue for the season, needn’t be your only option. Golds, sil-vers and winter-whites can also add sparkle to your table. And speaking of sparkle, candles will enhance the ambi-ence, especially if you place them near glass or mirrored pieces that will twinkle in their light.

dition. While poinsettias, holly and evergreens are classic holiday favorites, for example, you may wish to embrace other fl oral choices of varying colors and styles. Just make sure your bouquet does not obstruct anyone’s view.

When guests arrive at your table, the centerpiece you’ve carefully chosen will help create just the right back-drop for merriment, garnering attention almost equal to that of your festive feast itself. ■

TIP: “I like to write guests’ names on red and green Christmas ornaments. They serve as both place cards and favors, providing a nice keepsake from the evening.” ~ SHEILA GUARINO, FREQUENT HOST, RIDGEWOOD

PLANNING A HOLIDAY PARTY

and deciding what to serve can be a

headache. This year, why not simplify

things by focusing on those two can’t-

lose crowd-pleasers, chocolate and

coffee? When chocolate’s feel-good

endorphins pair up with the energiz-

ing power of coffee, you can practically

hear them whispering, “’Tis the season

to be jolly!”

To make your “C & C” party look

as good as it tastes, let a tantalizing

assortment of elegant chocolate des-

serts provide visual delight. Create a

rich backdrop for the confections by

decorating in the soft hues of choco-

late, coffee and cream. For instance, try

adorning your dining area with vases

of brown orchids or hypericum (also

known as “coffee bean”). Or opt for

bunches of chocolate cosmos, a fl ower

that actually smells like chocolate.

Happily, there are infi nite pos-

sibilities of creative coffee drinks and

blissful chocolate desserts to highlight

at your no-fret fête. Turn the page for

two libations that unite this power pair.

Skip the usual poinsettias for a nosegay

of thorny rudbeckias: their brown and

gold tones add an unexpected touch of

chocolate-inspired warmth (and whimsy).

is the setting for a sumptuous array of

cake, cookies, tarts and chocolate slabs.

kids’bashdon’t forget the young ones when you plan the season’s entertaining. Kids deserve to party too, and you may even catch a moment to hobnob with their chaperoning parents. you’ll find that a savvy selection of colors, decorations and tasty treats can help make your bash a smash.

Keep children’s ages and genders in mind—along with any special theme you’ve chosen —as you craft invitations to send to your child’s friends. you might consider asking children to dress up and bring a favorite doll or stuffed animal as a “guest.”

set the table with a traditional tablecloth or perhaps an inventive alternative. (In the spread pictured at left, a colorful crocheted bed cover made a party pop.) napkins are also a must to prevent sticky fingers. Choose colorful cloth napkins, which you can tie with yarn or hair ties.

party gurus suggest serving simple, easy-to-enjoy items that minimize mess. If pizza, ice-cream sundaes and superhero cakes seem trite, try tea sandwiches stuffed with peanut-butter-and-jelly or egg salad—or cookies, cupcakes or other finger foods. you can even use a cookie cutter to cut sandwiches and cookies into stars, hearts and other shapes. and top sweets with colorful frostings and toppings, such as M&Ms, jelly beans and sprinkles. display desserts on cake stands and consider filling any gaps between the dishes with dolls, figurines, sports trophies or other eye-catchers. you can serve beverages in dainty teacups (or mugs if it’s an all-male group), whether the children prefer traditional tea, juice, punch, milk or hot chocolate.

after the kids are suitably stuffed, a fun-filled game session is in order. feel free to or-ganize old-fashioned favorites such as the breaking of a holiday piñata, or dream up an in-novative game of your own. at the party’s end, be sure to give each child something to take home, perhaps a holiday “goodie bag” or a chocolate lollipop embellished with a colorful ribbon. n

The Fountain Spa’s spot in the ballroom where the complimentary chair massages and

paraffin hand dips were hits, but so was its raffle for the Spa Harmony Package, complete

with a deluxe full body massage, Hydramemory facial and private jacuzzi. The Fountain

Spa has a lot to celebrate and they got the word out at BergenFest. The big news is

the grand reopening in January of its well established Ramsey location where a new

medical spa will debut. The MedSpa at the Fountain Spa will feature Botox, fillers, and

hair transplants for men and women by Dr. Herbert Feinberg, MD, and a board certified

dermatologist. In addition, cosmetic, plastic, and reconstructive services will be run by

Dr. David L. Abramson, MD, and a board certified plastic surgeon. Topping off services

at the MedSpa will be podiatric procedures by Dr. Jill Hagen, MD, and a board certified

podiatrist. The second phase of the Ramsey remodel will include new, larger ladies’

locker rooms, steam room, and more side-by-side massage rooms along with side-

by-side facials with a couple’s waiting area. “The opportunity is perfect to expand our

medical spa services in our Ramsey location,” says Joyce Fontaine of The Fountain Spa.

Who Was the daPPer gentleman in the tux in the corner at BergenFest?

It was none other than one of Sal Lauretta for Men’s elegant displays, standing alongside

a lovely model, showing off the newest designer menswear fashions from this well-known

clothing atelier known for its meticulous tailoring, finishing, and finely edited line of

designers it carries. The busy BergenFest booth was the site of a many contests, including

makeovers for husbands and dinner for two at Bottagra Restaurant. “A number of wives

were entering their husbands in the contest for the makeover,” says Ralph Lauretta. “One

lucky winner gets a salon makeover, plus a casual Friday night outfit.”

But for ladies hoping to spruce up the men in their lives for the holidays, Sal Lauretta

for Men has a number of unique gift ideas. “We have a complimentary wardrobe

consulting service where we come into your home or office for style assessments,” says

Ralph. “We have an in-store space dedicated to the designer Robert Graham who has a

huge following in the area.”

Another wildly popular holiday gift item is the line of Tokens & Icons’ one-of-a-kind

cufflinks that Sal Lauretta for Men carries. “Cufflinks are crafted from authentic nostalgic

items, such as ancient Roman coins, Scrabble game pieces encased in sterling silver, or the

actual pieces of baseballs—and pieces of stadium seating—ideal for Yankee fans—or, an

ideal gift for the man who has everything,” says Ralph.

h e a r t s that The Valley Hospital gave

out to BergenFest attendees had a clear

message—it’s time to get a free heart risk

assessment at Valley. “We were pleased

to have the opportunity to get the word

out about the importance of being

aware of your risk for heart disease,” says

Maureen Curran Kleinman of The Valley

Hospital.

A leader in cardiac care and research,

Valley offers medical and procedural

clinical trials that are at the forefront

of coronary care. The new Valley Heart

and Vascular Institute builds upon

the expertise of more than 60 Valley

cardiologists, invasive cardiologists,

electrophysiologists, cardiac surgeons,

and vascular surgeons to provide a

continuum of prevention and wellness

services, diagnostic and treatment

services, research, and education for all

types of cardiac and vascular disease.

Opportunities for new and expanded

clinical trials will also increase, which

means Valley will perform more clinical

research trials for cutting-edge treatments

and medications than ever before. By

working together, Valley will be even

better equipped to fight the number-one

and number-three killers in the United

States: heart disease and stroke.

In addition, to raise awareness of

the cause, symptoms, and prevalence of

heart disease, Valley has established The

Center for Women’s Heart Health, and

The Men’s Heart Center, which offer a free

comprehensive Heart Risk Assessment

that can identify if a woman or man is at

increased risk for heart disease.

In 2010 Valley’s cardiac surgery group

was among 50 groups nationwide given

top marks for quality by Consumer

Reports magazine. Valley is one of only

two hospitals in New Jersey—and the

only one in Bergen County—to be

included on the top 50 list.

strategies was Holy Name Medical Center’s goal in exhibiting at BergenFest,

and the crowds at the event made it a success. “Most people have a high

level of curiosity when it comes to healthcare, and as a result, we had a busy

table with many discussions about the proactive screenings which we offer for

cardiac issues and cancer,” says Jane Ellis of Holy Name Medical Center which

is celebrating 85 years as one of the community’s pillars of healthcare. “We

provide the tools and information to help people make wise choices about

their health.”

Holy Name Medical Center was recently recognized as a top-ranked

Community Value Provider by Cleverley + Associates, a leading healthcare

financial consulting firm specializing in operational benchmarking and

performance enhancement strategies. Holy Name was ranked among the top

20 percent of all hospitals in the U.S. and is the only hospital in Bergen County

to receive the Community Value Five-Star designation.

induction cooking is the next generation of kitchen appliance technology,

says John Cioletti, president of Reno’s Appliance. A family-owned and

its overstock specials now available at BuyRenos.com. “Induction cooking

is the most efficient way of cooking, and we offer unparalleled education

about induction technology to our customers,” adds John. “The portable

induction cooktop from Fagor retails for under $200.” Induction cooking

technology heats the cookware, not the element, which makes for a more

efficient way of cooking. For a collection of demo and instructional videos,

Glorious FOOD

WalnutsServing size: 14 halvesCalories: 185Benefi t: They’re high in omega-3 fatty acids, which improve brain function and protect against plaque buildup by reducing artery-clogging infl ammation. Chances are, you need the help: An estimated 60 percent of Ameri-cans are defi cient in omega-3s. Luckily, one serving of walnuts meets your daily requirement.

AlmondsServing size: 23 nutsCalories: 163Benefi t: They’re an excellent source of a type of vitamin E called alpha-tocopherol, an antioxidant that helps neutralize damaging free radicals. Foods containing vitamin E may also protect against Alzheimer’s disease and contribute to healthy aging.

HazelnutsServing size: 21 nutsCalories: 178Benefi t: Of all tree nuts, they’re tops in folate content. Folate plays an essential part in the production of cells, making it a critical nutrient for expectant moms. It protects against DNA changes that can lead to cancer, and it may also ward off depression and anemia.

PistachiosServing size: 49 nutsCalories: 159Benefi t: They contain morelutein than any other nut. Recent research suggests that nutrient can help protect the eyes from age-related macular degeneration. Pistachios also supply eyesight-boosting beta-carotene.

GO AHEAD—REACH FOR THAT HOLIDAY BOWL. A DAILY SERVING OF NUTS—ENOUGH TO FIT in the palm of your hand—packs a much-needed dose of protein and fi ber and offers a heart-health boost.

They’re cholesterol-free and low in sodium (as long as you stick to unsalted). And each type of nut shines in its own way.

CashewsServing size: 18 nutsCalories: 157Benefi t: They’re among the few nuts containing a signifi cant amount of vitamin K, which is mainly found in leafy greens. This multi-function-ing vitamin maintains proper blood clotting, helps prevent bone-density loss and works against hardening of the arteries.

Brazil nutsServing size: 6 nutsCalories: 186Benefi t: Here a little goes a long way: One nut provides more than the recommended daily value of selenium. This mineral regulates thyroid function, supports the immune system and may help relieve arthritis symptoms. It’s also a possible cancer-fi ghter. But too much selenium can cause adverse ef-fects (abdominal trouble and hair loss, for example), so it’s best to limit your Brazil-nut intake.

PecansServing size: 19 halvesCalories: 196Benefi t: When it comes to antioxi-dants, they’re the number-one nut. The Southern treat is also in the top cat-egory of antioxidant-containing foods. That means pecans may decrease the threat of coronary heart disease, cancer and neurological diseases.

PeanutsServing size: 28 nutsCalories: 161Benefi t: These popular poppables boast a variety of nutrients, including cancer-fi ghting beta-sisterol. A 10-year study found that eating pea-nuts two or more times a week was associated with a 58 percent reduc-tion in the risk of developing colon cancer in women and a 27 percent lowered risk in men.

Ranked number 1 on Web mD’s list of top take 5 to 10 Years off Your appearance 6 anti-aging breakthroughs, Fractional Co2 laser Resurfacing is the latest and greatest weapon in the battle against the ravages of time. although laser resurfacing has been around for decades, recent advancements in the technology has made this treatment a realistic option for just about anybody wanting to look younger.

You no longer have to put up with months of down time. in less than 5 days, your old skin peels off and your new face will be

unveiled.in 7 to 10 days you will look at like you traveled back in time. this revolutionary treatment induces your skin to keep producing new collagen for up to 6 months. that means your skin just keeps getting better and better over time. after just one treatment you will notice:

• Reduction of fine lines and wrinkles• Elimination of sunspots• improvement of texture and pore size• tightening of loose skin around the eyes and jowls• softening of acne scars and “smoker’s lines”

this treatment is similar to the popular Fraxel® procedure, but make no mistake, older fractional laser treatments don’t even come close to delivering the amazing results we are having with our proprietary omni resurfacing protocols. Come in for a free consultation with Dr. song and learn how our smart skin Co2 laser resurfacing treatments can take 5 to 10 years off your appearance.

WERE THIS A GAME OF FREE ASSOCIATION AND the word were “Aldo’s” the automatic reply would have to be “abbondanza!”—Italian for “abundance.” That Aldo Cascio is a generous soul comes across on the plate. From the bread basket (don’t miss the signature cheesy bruschetta—its sharp-ness and saltiness make for a unique ap-petite opener), to the pastas, to the entrees, everything is supersized. And that’s just one reason families, friends and casual ac-quaintances fl ock to this inviting BYO. (No bottle handy? No problem! Pane e Vino, a wine and spirits store also owned by Cascio, is just two doors down. You can even sip a cocktail at its handsome wooden bar before your meal; you’ll be called when your table is ready.)

The other reason? The food delivers what folks come here looking for: red and white–checked tablecloth staples like spie-dini, spaghetti, pizzaiola, primavera and parmigiana this and that. Indeed, the hot antipasto platter is straight from the red-

by Maria Lissandrel lo

sauce classics cookbook. Piled high with shrimp, mussels, artichokes, eggplant, pep-pers and stuffed mushrooms and clams, all swimming in pomodoro, it may not be cutting-edge cuisine but it’s certainly all-out comfort—the kind that leads to sauce-soaked pieces of bread and crackling conversation.

Hankering for just a taste of starch, we ordered a half-portion of the gnocchi al pomodoro. So much for getting just a taste—each of our bowls was fi lled to the brim. And wouldn’t you know, the dump-lings were good. Really good. Their robust potato fl avor and fi rm texture, beautifully played

up by the mild tomato sauce, made it tough to leave a single gnocchi behind.

Entrees follow suit, with not one, but three big slices of veal in the Milanese. They’re lightly breaded and fried to a nice crisp. And the dish comes with a giant heap of tender

steamed escarole, a delicious bittersweet foil for the buttery veal.

If you’re thinking of ordering shrimp francese to be virtuous, here’s fair warning: Each of the mighty jumbo shrimp (six in all) is coated with an egg-and-fl our batter that enhances its bulk. And the substantial wine, lemon and but-ter sauce makes it a heavy dish overall. Make the mistake of eating as much as we did beforehand, and you too will likely take most of it home.

Desserts are not Aldo’s tour de force; most of them are not made on the premises. The carrot cake and the German chocolate cake (more coconut, please!) were passable … and easy to pass up. My advice: When such abundance can be had at such a rea-sonable price (our bill was just about $90), skip the sweets and go for the savory. ■

What your favorite holiday movie says about you

If your fave film is …A Christmas Story, National Lampoon’s

Christmas Vacation or Home Alone

You’re … FUN-LOVING AND ADVENTUROUS

Always enthusiastic, you tackle every situa-

tion with a smile, like the leading characters

in these comedic gems. Your bright, bubbly

persona attracts many a friend and admirer. So

does your inclination to create fun wherever

you go—mixed, of course, with a bit of twinkle-

in-the-eye trouble (a la Clark Griswold). Your

solution to most problems? Thinking positive!

If your fave film is …Elf, The Nightmare Before Christmas, or

The Santa Clause

You’re … CREATIVE AND WHIMSICAL

Like Buddy the elf on his gleeful winter romp

through New York City, you are a spontane-

ous soul who finds joy in the little things. You

see life’s possibilities as endless—and seize as

many as you can. Your uniqueness and quick

wit likely make you the life of the party. And

you’re determined to generously share your

magic-loving spirit with others.

If your fave film is …It’s a Wonderful Life, A Christmas Carol or

White Christmas

You’re … IDEALISTIC AND LOYAL

Just as George Bailey declined the plum job

offered by the villainous Mr. Potter, you put

true values—love, friendship and traditional

ideals—over worldly gain. That’s why your

loved ones appreciate you, maybe more than

you know. You rival the awakened Ebenezer

Scrooge in your appreciation of this season’s

special joy: gathering those loved ones near at

home and hearth.

If your fave film is …How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Miracle on

34th Street or A Charlie Brown Christmas

You’re … WISE AND EMPATHETIC

Your key traits recall Charlie Brown’s soulful per-

severance as he tends to a neglected Christ-

mas tree, determined to keep the holiday’s

true meaning alive. The upright characters in

these films speak to your ability to maintain

a level-headed perspective and the indepen-

dence that lets you stand up for what you be-

lieve in. You’re passionate in your endeavors—

especially if they bring happiness to others.

They’ve become as ubiquiTous

as mistletoe, menorahs or last-minute

sales—those holiday movies most of us

know by heart and watch repeatedly this

time each year. but did you know that

your cinematic preferences can be a secret

clue to your personality?

“The movies you watch can reveal

aspects of your inner self,” says Risa Wil-

liams, a psychologist who with behaviorist

ezra Werb wrote cinescopes: What your

Favorite movies Reveal about you. They’ve

established personality types keyed to spe-

cially selected groups of favorite films.

and bergen health & Life developed the

guide at right based on their ideas. Just

name your favorite holiday film. (if several

movies spring to mind, think about which

one—if you only had time for one—you’d

hate to miss.) Then look for your choice in

our guide, and see if the description fits you
