Berkeley County Schools Comprehensive Assessment System
2021 - 2022
This document outlines the comprehensive assessment plan for Berkeley County Schools. It captures the variety of academic assessments utilized across our district. A comprehensive assessment plan must include a variety of formative and summative assessment data in order to provide information on student progress and the effectiveness of curriculum and instruction. The types of assessments administered in Berkeley County include:
• State and Federally Mandated Assessments: administered by all districts within a state due to state or federal laws, policies, or regulations.
• Benchmarks: common assessments given periodically throughout the school year, at specified times during a curriculum sequence • Universal Screening: brief assessments that are valid, reliable, and evidence-based; conducted with all students or targeted groups of
students to identify students who are at risk for academic failure, and, therefore, likely to need additional or alternative forms of instruction to supplement core instruction.
• Progress Monitoring: scientifically based practice used to frequently assess students’ academic and behavioral performance; involves use of measures that allow comparison over time; conducted at least monthly to estimate rates of improvement, identify students who are not demonstrating adequate progress and/or compare the efficacy of different forms of instruction to design more effective, individualized instruction.

• Diagnostic Measures: assessments that provide detailed information useful in instructional planning • Formative Assessments: “All those activities undertaken by teachers and/or by students which provide information to be used as
feedback to modify the teaching and learning activities in which they engage” (Black and Wiliam in Marzano, 2006). • Common Formative Assessments: “An assessment typically created collaboratively by a team of teachers responsible for the same grade
level or course. Common formative assessments are frequently administered throughout the year to identify (1) individual students who need additional time and support for learning, (2) the teaching strategies most effective in helping students acquire the intended knowledge and skills, (3) program concerns – areas in which students generally are having difficulty achieving the intended standard and (4) improvement goals for individual teachers and the team” (Dufour, Dufour, Eaker, & Many, 2010, p 214).

SAT School Day Why used? State’s general summative assessment administered to all Grade 11
students, except those who take the West Virginia Alternate Summative Assessment. It is a nationally recognized college- and career-readiness assessment administered by the College Board and is accepted at colleges and universities throughout West Virginia and the nation for both college admissions and placement. It also can be used to qualify for the Promise Scholarship.

Tara’s Stuff State Mandated ACT (Spell out)
Why used? Colleges use the ACT for admissions decisions, course placement, academic advising and loans and scholarships. The ACT test measures what students have learned in their courses and measures their skills in English, Math, Science, and Reading. The ACT helps students understand what they need to learn so they can build rigorous high school course plans, identify career areas that align with their interests, and increase the likelihood that they will consider pursuing a college education. Research Support A technical manual is available to review the research supporting the use of ACT for its outlined purpose.
