Ventfort Hall Mansion and Gilded Age Museum will present “A Home for the Holidays” starting November 28 to mid-January, 2009. The Victorian-era mansion will be beautifully decorated and will host a number of special events to enliven the season.

The halls will be decked throughout public areas of the 1893 manor house including the magnificent dining room festooned for a grand holiday meal by Country Dining Room Antiques of Great Barrington; an American Girl Christmas tree decorated with charming Gilded Age ornaments hand made by Ventfort Hall’s American Girl program participants; antique train replicas, featuring one gleaming engine that is 10 feet long, (a real Polar Express!) and more.

In addition, the ongoing exhibit of “Les Petites Dames de Mode” (The Little Ladies of Fashion), a world-class display of sixty 29”-tall Victorian ladies in exquisitely detailed cos-tumes makes for a Victorian holiday feast for the eyes.

The season kicks off on Sunday December 7 from 2-5 p.m. with a “mini” Nutcracker Ballet, performed by the American Dance Institute. This event includes a Victorian Tea with Cocoa, Mulled Cider and plenty of goodies.

On Saturday December 27 and Monday December 29 at 3 p.m. Carl Sprague will return with his popular old-world marionette shows. A rendition of the classic fairy tale “Jack and the Beanstalk” will delight children of all ages.

On the evening of Sunday December 28 composer and pianist Jakov Jakoulov will present a concert/lecture titled “The Neglected Art: The World of Classical Improvisation” starting at 6 p.m., followed by a wine and cheese reception.

During Christmas Week from December 26 through 31, the acclaimed play “The Belle of Amherst”, will be presented. Normi Noel returns to Ventfort Hall to direct as does actress

Ann Undeland who will recount the fascinating story of Emily Dickinson.

Free hot mulled cider will also be included with each paid tour admission on weekends and the week of December 26 through December 31. Ventfort Hall, located at 104 Walker Street , Lenox, is open daily year-round (closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day.) Hourly

AARP is looking for volunteers throughout Berkshire County with an interest in helping others. Each year, from February 1 through April 15, the AARP Tax-Aide program offers free tax coun-seling and preparation to moderate and low-income taxpayers, with special attention to those age 60 and older. Volunteer counselors are trained in basic federal and Massachusetts individual income tax preparation, with an emphasis on issues affecting older adults.

“The AARP Tax-Aide program is a wonderful resource for the American taxpayer,” said Pim Goodbody, Berkshire County District Coordinator. “AARP Tax-Aide volunteers get a great deal of satis-faction from helping people deal with the challenges of filling out their tax forms.”

Nationwide, more than 32,000 AARP Tax-Aide volunteers, trained in cooperation with the Internal Revenue Service and state tax authorities, help more than two million people file their personal income tax forms. The program is expected to be offered during the coming 2008 tax season at seven Senior Centers within Berkshire County: Dalton, Great Barrington, Lee, Lenox, North Adams, Pittsfield and Williamstown.

Volunteer Counselors must commit to attending the annual 4-5 daytime training sessions in early January and provide a minimum of three hours of counseling per week during Tax-Aide's 10-week tax season; February 1 - April 15, 2009.

Thanks to Wheatleigh for their gingerbread recipe:Gingerbread For Making Gingerbread Houses1 cup shortening1 cup molasses1 cup sugar1 Tablespoon ground cinnamon1 tap baking soda1/2 teaspoon salt5 cups All Purpose flour (approximately)

1. combine shortening, sugar and molasses in a pot, bring to simmer2. remove from heat and add baking soda, salt and cinnamon3. gradually stir in flour 1 cup at a time (you may not need 5 cups)4. roll out to 1/4 inch thick- and then chill the dough5. cut shapes6. bake cold dough @ 300 degrees for 20 minutes until firm

Fifth Annual Gingerbread House Competition and Silent Auction

During the month of December, the Lenox Library will host an exhibit of artwork created in Community Access to the Arts’ workshops for people with disabilities. CATA’s colorful art will be on display in the Welles Gallery. The library is open from Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The exhibit is part of CATA Art on Tour, a program funded by Berkshire Life Charitable Foundation and gifts from Carol & George Minkoff, Leslie & Steve Shatz, Elaine & Ben Silberstein, and Marjorie & Sherwood Sumner.

Sandra Newman, CATA’s founder and executive director, created the organization sixteen years ago to nurture and celebrate the creativity of people with disabilities through shared experiences in the visual and performing arts. Said Newman, “Art on Tour really speaks to the mission of sharing our art with the community at large in different towns and in varied settings.”

Community Health Programs (CHP) has been awarded a 3-year contract by the Massachusetts Department of Health to implement a new health care model designed to reduce barriers to service for uninsured and underinsured individuals in South and Central Berkshire County. The new program combines the Women’s Health Network (WHN) and the Men’s Health Partnership (MHP) Care Coordination Program into one entity to be administered by CHP.

Similar women’s services were previously offered in Berkshire County by Project H.E.R.O.A. in Pittsfield, MA. The newly funded CHP program will continue to emphasize prevention and access to preventative measures such as screenings for breast and cervical cancer; now it will also address men’s health issues. Specifically, the program will employ a Program Coordinator, two Nurses and two Patient Navigators to:

Assure underserved populations access to preventative screenings for breast, cervical, colon and prostate cancers as well as cardiovas-cular disease.

Ensure appropriate and timely access to diagnostic services. Provide access to free or low-cost treatment, when needed, for

chronic diseases and conditions.Connect patients to primary care providers. CHP is in a unique

position to connect area residents without a doctor to medical providers at its Federally Qualify healthcare facilities: the CHP Health Center at Fairview Hospital, Barrington OB/GYN in Great Barrington, and the newly-acquired Neighborhood Health Center in Pittsfield.

Refer patients to specialists, when needed.Coordinate care for chronic diseases.Provide ‘risk reduction’ education to help people avoid and/or

manage chronic disease.The WHN-NHP program focuses on comprehensive, accessible,

culturally competent and high-quality care for the most vulnerable populations that comprise many of those who are uninsured and underinsured.

“We are grateful and excited to be the recipient of this award,” said Marcia Savage, Ed.D, Executive Director of Community Health

Programs. “CHP’s mission is to provide quality healthcare and well-ness services to all residents who seek it. There are many among us who, for whatever reason, face major difficulties accessing the servic-es they need. This funding will enable us to reach many more people and, hopefully, help them prevent the onset of serious health issues.”

The program is expected to be up and running by late fall. CHP staff is currently undergoing thorough training to implement the program according to DHP guidelines.

Octavio Hernandez of CHP will act as Program Coordinator. “We are very excited to bring this comprehensive care coordination program to our uninsured and underinsured residents of Berkshire County,” said Mr. Hernandez. “We will now be able to offer naviga-tion, case management, patient education and lifestyle interven-tion services, such as tobacco cessation, diabetes management and healthy living choices.”

Eligibility requirements will focus on low-income, uninsured and underinsured adults age 40-64. Interested parties will need to apply in advance of seeking care to be eligible to participate in the program.

Berkshire South Regional Community Center, located at 15 Crissey Rd. in Great Barrington, will be hosting a com-munity Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings on Tuesday, November 25, Come share the true meaning of Thanksgiving with friends and neighbors. Develop or enhance your ability to identify winter trees by twig and bud anatomy, bark features and plant architecture. Students will practice their skills with win-ter tree dichotomous keys. Participants should have The Illustrated Book of Trees by William Carey Grimm. Instructor Brad Roeller is Manager of Display Gardens at the Institute of Ecosystem Studies in Millbrook, NY where he oversees the Institute’s landscaping projects. He lectures for the New York Botanical Garden, Berkshire Botanical Garden and for many other horticultural institutions on the east coast.

Want your pet to have a Merry Christmas and help the animals at the Eleanor Sonsini Animal Shelter at the same time? There’s a picture perfect way to accomplish both: have your pets’ picture taken with Santa. There are two “Santa Paws” events coming up in December, sponsored by Berkshire Mall, Roxwell Pets, and the Red Lion Inn.

On December 5 from 3-7 pm, the Berkshire Mall Santa will be at Roxwell Pets in the Allendale Shopping Center in Pittsfield.

On December 10, from 3:30 to 6:30 pm, the Berkshire Mall Santa will be on the porch of the famous Red Lion Inn in Stockbridge.

At both events, a photographer will be on hand to take a picture of your pet(s) sitting with Santa for a $10 donation. All proceeds go to fund medical care for the many animals at the Sonsini Shelter.

The Eleanor Sonsini Animal Shelter is a no kill shelter that was voted “Best Place in the Berkshires to Get a Pet” this year. The shelter is run primarily by volunteers and plays a large role in caring for the unfortunate and unwanted pets in the county. In 2007, the shelter returned 192 lost cats and dogs to their homes, and found new homes for another 450.

These numbers are rising in 2008, as economic hard times hit both pet owners and pets. Through September of this year, the shelter had already returned 189 lost pets to their owners, and found new homes for 407 more.

Come to the Berkshire Botanical Garden on Wednesday, December 3, from 1 - 3 p.m. for this hands-on workshop. Materials included in cost of class, Bring pruners and gloves. Create a beautiful evergreen wreath for the holidays, using the bounty of the fields and forests of the Berkshires. Learn about the natural history of common and not-so-common plants that can be used to create interesting holiday decorations. Consider a wide selection of plant material including evergreen boughs, berries, seedpods, fern fronds and moss. Construct a simple evergreen wreath. Take it home and the knowledge to create wreaths for holidays to come. Norman Rockwell Museum received the National Humanities Medal, America’s highest recognition of work by individuals and institutions in the field of the humani-ties. It is one of nine recipients nationwide and the only museum among the winners.

The award was presented by President George W. Bush to Laurie Norton Moffatt, Director/CEO of Norman Rockwell Museum in a ceremony held today at the White House. In his citation, President Bush noted, “Norman Rockwell Museum is being recognized for studying and honoring the life, work, and ideals of an icon of American art. The museum has been the careful curator of the archives, illustrations, and benevolent spirit Norman Rockwell bequeathed to the nation.”

“I am delighted that the Norman Rockwell Museum has received the 2008 National Humanities Medal,” said NEH Chairman Bruce Cole. “Norman Rockwell’s work is an essential part of American art and the 20th-century American experience, and the Museum’s work to preserve the legacy of this iconic American artist is truly deserving of this honor.”

“Norman Rockwell Museum is deeply honored to be the recipient of the National Humanities Medal,” said Ms. Norton Moffatt, who has served as director of the museum since 1986. “Norman Rockwell’s great gift was to

capture on canvas our common humanity and crystallize universal feelings through his sensitive depictions of life’s fleeting moments. He was unsurpassed in illuminating the concerns and joys of everyday Americans. For 40 years, it has been the museum’s great pleasure to contrib-ute to the field of American visual studies by exploring the art of Norman Rockwell and the illustrators who preceded and followed him.”

Fittingly, the medallion presented to Ms. Norton Moffatt at the White House was designed by illustrator and for-mer medal winner David Macaulay—one of over 400 illustrators whose work has been presented by Norman Rockwell Museum.

National Humanities Medal The National Humanities Medal, inaugurated in 1997,

honors individuals or groups whose work has deepened the nation’s understanding of the humanities, broadened Americans’ engagement with the humanities, or helped preserve and expand Americans’ access to important resources in the field. Workshop.Norman Rockwell MuseumFounded in 1969 with the help of Norman and Molly Rockwell, Norman Rockwell Museum is dedicated to education

and art appreciation inspired by the enduring legacy of one of America’s greatest artists. The Museum houses the world’s largest and most significant collection of original Rockwell art, and presents the works of contemporary and past masters of illustration. The Norman Rockwell archive contains more than 200,000 photographs, letters, and other rare mementos. The Museum is online at www.nrm.org.

Norman Rockwell Museum 40th Anniversary In 2009, Norman Rockwell Museum celebrates its 40th anniversary. Since its founding in 1969, Norman Rockwell

Museum has become the preeminent museum of American illustration art through research, publications, exhibitions and educational programming. During its anniversary, the Museum will be announcing initiatives central to the study and understanding of the art of illustration in American visual culture. In 2009, exhibitions curated by the Museum will be seen in 10 states across the nation, and the Museum’s Stockbridge campus will present its 100th exhibition and welcome its five millionth visitor.

Norman Rockwell Museum Receives National Humanities Medal

On Friday, December 5, there will be a free community singing event at Dewey Hall in the center of Sheffield from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., with a potluck dinner beginning at 5:30 p.m. Tim Eriksen will be the singing master for the evening. Eriksen will lead a singing school that focuses on Sharpe-Note music and the Sacred Harp singing tradi-tion. He will trace the oldest living American singing tradition back to its roots in Colonial New England, and at the same time teach participants to sing in the four-part harmonies of the Sacred Harp. Tim Eriksen has taught music and ethnomusicology at Dartmouth, Hampshire, and Amherst colleges and the University of Minnesota in addition to pursuing a varied musical career that incorporates punk, Sacred Harp, and classical South Indian styles. He has sung, written, and consulted for a number of films, including the major Hollywood film “Cold Mountain”.
