important information

program overview:

Sign up now to embark on an experiential learning journey in Germanyʼs capital, which is not only rich in culture and history but also Europeʼs leading hub for entrepreneurship.

In this exciting 2-week program, you l̓l be part of an international group of students who dive into Berlinʼs vibrant start-up culture: you gain insights into cultural differences and German business practices through company visits, enjoy the German cuisine as well as fusion food at trendy restaurants and experience Berlin with all its history and unique neighborhoods from the perspective of a local. You can even discover Germanyʼs second largest city through a 1-day excursion to Hamburg and explore its beautiful harbor, architecture and aviation manufacturing industry.

Your fellow participants in the “Berlin Start-up Experiential Learning Program“ can be from Australia, Brazil, USA and Hong Kong – just to name a few of the countries from which we receive bookings of our programs. With such a diverse student body, you are certain to refine your intercultural communication skills. Besides learning about cultural differences within your group, you will of course also discover what Germans value when doing business (e.g. structure and punctuality). You will not only hear from top managers at companies, such as BMW, Bayer and SAP, but also meet young entrepreneurs who have founded their own (social) start-ups. In order to keep you energized during the 2 weeks we spend together, we l̓l let you try out different kinds of food at trendy local restaurants as well as hip street food spots and the best gelato/ice-cream in all of Germany.

The best part of our program is that you can tailor it to make it fit with your needs when it comes to the cultural activities. You get to choose whether you would like to visit museums, take a ride on a boat and/or go on the half or full day excursions we offer (although we strongly recommend to visit Hamburg, a beautiful city up north, which is completely different to Berlin). ;)

On top of that, you l̓l become a short-term entrepreneur when tackling one of three "Social Start-up Challenge" projects. These projects (highlighted in pink below) represent the guiding theme throughout the two exciting weeks.

teach you how you can turn any business idea you have in the future into actual products or services.

The themes and/or locations of each "Social Start-up Challenge"

project are integrated in the 2-week schedule in order for you and your team to experience them first-hand. On the last day of the program, each team presents its social business idea to a jury in form of a pitch* and the winner takes home a prize.

*a pitch is a short and concise presentation, in which you try to convince your audience of your idea

#insurance

All program participants will be responsible for their own health and travel insurance coverage for their trip to Berlin. The participants are covered for any damages caused, e.g. during a company visit, through People & Friendsʼs professional liability insurance.

#safety

During the program, the participants have at least two emergency contacts they can reach out to: Andreas and Janina are available via their cell phones 24/7. Please note: our digital ̒ Berlin Welcome Info Package ̓will also entail details on how the participants can keep safe while abroad.

#visa requirements

#immigration costs

The program participants will be responsible for any immigration costs, including but not limited to airline, airport, arrival and departure taxes or fees, passport costs and visa costs. The participants should ensure that they are eligible to travel to and stay in Berlin for the entire duration of the program.

#program payments

The People & Friends Berlin Start-up Experiential Learning Program operates in Germany and is paid for in local currency. All program prices are in Euro. Participants can only pay for a program by using the People & Friends online shop on the official People & Friends website at www.peopleandfriends.org. Available methods of payment include: PayPal, credit card and payment by invoice (this last option equals an international wire transfer).

#orientation

We want you to be prepared for the “Berlin Start-up Experiential Learning Program“. We will therefore let you access a virtual orientation video, in which we address the most important topics you should keep in mind before traveling. Some of these include: visa information, travel insurance, safety tips, information about the local currency and common ways of payment as well as packing suggestions. In addition to the video, you will receive our “Berlin Welcome Info Package“ PDF that serves as a more elaborate information package providing further details on the topics mentioned as well as additional ones (e.g. different options of how to get to the hostel from Tegel Airport (TXL)). We l̒l also send you relevant links to helpful websites and a list of useful apps you can download while in Berlin (e.g. the BVG App - a personal trip planner for the Berlin public transport system).

#refunds and cancellation penalties

People & Friends reserves the right to cancel, alter or amend their program at any time. If a trip is canceled by People & Friends, all or a portion of the participants ̓payments will be refunded, pending the cancellation date. If individual participants cancel, it may result in a penalty of up to the full program tuition, depending on the date of cancellation. Verbal notice will not serve as valid cancellation notification.

Arrival Day

You arrive at Berlin Tegel Airport (TXL) and make your way to our hostel (aletto hostel) individually. This should be easy since you received detailed directions on how to get to the hostel in our ̒ Berlin Welcome Info Package .̓

In the evening, you are invited to a small reception in the hostel lobby. Andreas and Janina, as your program coordinators and workshop trainers, stop by the hostel to greet everyone at this reception. A round of introductions is held in order for you to get to know the other participants.

Day 1

9AM: You and your fellow participants are picked up at the hostel by Andreas and Janina, who guide everyone to visit the Education Innovation Lab (EIL) – a start-up that provides innovative learning solutions for high schools, universities and companies.

After a short presentation given by the founders, you and the rest of the group gather in one of the EIL̓ s meeting rooms for your first workshop called “Be Great, Be YOU“. In this workshop, you do not only learn how to recognize and highlight your personal strengths and weaknesses. You also get introduced to entrepreneurial thinking and acting – for this 2-week program Andreas and Janina teach you how to adopt an entrepreneurial mindset.

For lunch, Andreas and Janina take you to two really cool ̒ Berlin style ̓street food spots you can choose from: Curry 36 (the most famous Currywurst (German curry sausage) shop in Berlin) and Mustafaʼs Gemüse Kebap (an immensely popular and delicious vegetarian kebab shop). In order to digest your food and stay awake, you are taken on an awesome walking tour in order to visit the must-see sights in Berlin. Some of the main highlights of the walking tour include: the Holocaust Memorial, the Brandenburg Gate, Checkpoint Charlie and the East Side Gallery (the longest preserved piece of the Berlin Wall).

In the evening, you and the other participants gather at Royals & Rice – a trendy vietnamese fusion restaurant in Berlin-Mitte. During the official Welcome Dinner at this restaurant you also get to watch the oscar-winning movie "The Lives of Others", which gives you a vivid impression of what it was like to live in Eastern Germany during the GDR (GDR = German Democratic Republic (DDR is the short form in German)). The day ends at around 10PM.

Day 2

9AM: You and your fellow participants are picked up at the hostel by Andreas and Janina, who guide everyone to our first company visit at Vattenfall – a Swedish government-owned power company. Upon arrival, a manager gives our group a tour of the company grounds and provides a more in-depth presentation focusing on Vattenfall̓ s sustainable and environmentally friendly energy generation.

Day 6

On Saturday, you can again choose between another free day in Berlin OR opt for the paid optional cultural excursion, the Sachsenhausen Memorial Tour. On this tour, you visit the very first concentration camp the Nazis ever built and learn even more about this dark chapter of Germanyʼs history. Today the camp serves as a museum documenting how life at the camp used to be and showcasing pieces of artwork created by the former inmates.

If you decide to go on the Sachsenhausen Memorial Tour, your day begins at 9AM. You and the other participants who signed up for the tour are picked up at the hostel by Andreas and Janina. Together, everyone makes their way to Sachsenhausen using public transport.

To cheer everyone up after this tour, the late afternoon has something sweet in store for you and the rest of the group: you will get to make your own chocolate at the Ritter Sport Chocolate Museum. Once you have your personal chocolate creation(s) in stow, you l̓l get some free time in the evening. The day ends at around 6PM.

Day 7

Sunday can either be another free day OR you join in for a series of paid optional cultural activities. The activities include: 1. a visit at the Berlin Dungeon (a tourist attraction providing a journey through Berlinʼs dark history in an actor-led, interactive experience), 2. a lunch at the revolving restaurant of the TV tower with spectacular 360° views of the city and 3. a visit of Berlinʼs museum island (including a day pass which grants you access to all museums on the island).

If you choose to participate in the cultural activities, the day ends at around 6PM.

On Tuesday, you are in for a real treat when we visit Restlos Glücklich – a social start-up which aims to reduce food waste in Berlin. Upon arrival, one of the founders of this start-up welcomes our group by providing more in-depth information on their company and subsequently invites everyone to join for a cooking class.

After enjoying a self-cooked lunch, you are transferred to the Social Impact Lab (a popular co-working space in Berlin). There, you meet the founders of another start-up called Jyoti Fairworks – a German-Indian fair fashion label that produces socially and ecologically sustainable fashion. After listening to their short presentation, Andreas and Janina give a workshop on “Team Building“ showing you how to effectively work together as a team. After dividing the group into small teams, you receive your respective "Social Start-up Challenge" project, which you and your team members work on over the course of the 2 weeks.

After the workshop, you are taken back to the hostel and get some free time in order to explore Berlin by yourself. Suggestions on things to do and where to grab dinner are given by Andreas and Janina on our way back to the hostel. The day ends at around 6PM.

Day 3

9AM: You and your fellow participants are picked up at the hostel by Andreas and Janina, who transfer the group to Potsdam – the city of former German emperors and our destination for the morning.

Upon arrival in Potsdam, you r̓e in for an exclusive 1-hour tour of the SAP Innovation Center – a unique combination of the agile start-up world supported by the market leader in business software. This visit allows you to look behind the scenes of SAPʼs own innovations that are developed together with young start-ups and to discover how the company thereby fosters creativity.

Subsequently, Andreas and Janina give their “Design Thinking part I“ workshop, in which they introduce you to the 5-step state-of-the-art method that is used by many companies across the globe. Design Thinking allows you to solve complex problems by being creative and generating new user-centric ideas. In this workshop, you and your team members apply steps 1 and 2 of the Design Thinking process to your own "Social Start-up Challenge" project.

After a lunch break at the SAP dining hall, you are in for a shortvisit of the famous and historical Sanssouci Palace before your return trip toBerlin. (Please note: the short visit of the palace will be cancelled if it rains orsnows too heavily.)

In the afternoon, you are taken to visit Give something back to Berlin – a social start-up that makes social engagement and neighborhood work accessible to the large migrant population of Berlin. Upon arrival, one of the start-upʼs founders gives our group a short presentation on their company and shares some of their current projects with us.

In the evening, you get some (more) free time to explore Berlin by yourself. Suggestions on things to do and where to grab dinner are given by Andreas and Janina. The day ends at around 7PM.

Day 4

9AM: You and your fellow participants are picked up at the hostel by Andreas and Janina, who transfer the group to our next workshop location at St. Oberholz – a popular café in the Berlin start-up scene that also provides meeting rooms.

There, Andreas and Janina give the "Design Thinking part II“ workshop, which focuses on proceeding with steps 3-5 of the Design Thinking process. In steps 1 and 2, you and your team have empathized with your user and defined a common understanding of the problem to be solved. You are now ready to get creative and generate plenty of ideas (potential solutions to the problem) in a brainstorming session, narrow these down to one and finally build a paper prototype to test (present to the rest of the group).

For lunch, you have different options to choose from in a food court at the Gesundbrunnen Center. Right next to the center, an exhilarating cultural activity awaits you: a tour of the Berlin Underworld – a subterranean museum exploring the city's underground history with a focus on World War II bunkers. On the tour, an expert guide leads you and the rest of our group to one of the few remaining bunkers of Berlin, as it was left after the war. There, you l̒l learn more about the life of the average Berlin citizen during the air raids of World War II.

In the late afternoon, you are taken on another company visit at soundcloud – an online audio distribution platform that enables its users to upload, record, promote, and share their originally-created sounds. Upon arrival, a manager gives our group a tour of the soundcloud office and shares more information on the companyʼs current and future activities.

The day ends at around 5PM giving you lots of free time in order to explore the city further.

Day 5

On Friday, you can either stay in Berlin and enjoy a free day OR you can go on a 1-day excursion to Hamburg – a global service, media, logistics and industrial hub as well as the second largest city in Germany. If you decide to go to Hamburg, your day starts early – at 7:30AM. You are then picked up at your hostel by a private VIP bus and are welcomed on board by Andreas, Janina and a private tour guide, who shares some historical and cultural information about Hamburg. Snacks are provided to everyone during this ride.

The day excursion in Hamburg begins with a visit at Airbus. At the entrance gate, an external service provider called Globetrotter lets one of their Airbus grounds tour guides join our group on the bus. After driving across the Airbus grounds, we all assemble in a large meeting room and listen to a presentation about the company as well as its latest innovations.

On our way to lunch, our private tour guide shares some more information on the cultural sights we are passing. You are then dropped off in the Portuguese quarter close to the harbor in Hamburg to choose from a selection of restaurants.

Day 8

Your second week commences with another intriguing company visit at the BMW motorcycle factory.

9AM: You and your fellow participants are picked up at the hostel by Andreas and Janina, who transfer the group to BMW. After a company presentation as well as a Q&A session, you get a private tour of the factory to take a closer look at the production process of the high quality motorcycles.

After this visit, everyone is transferred to the Education Innovation Lab once again to gather in one of their meeting rooms. There, Andreas and Janina give their "Business Model Canvas (BMC) part I“ workshop. With the BMC, entrepreneurs engage in an iterative process, which lets them transfer their business idea into different business models and test whether these have the potential to be implemented as sustainable projects. In this first part of the BMC workshop, you and your team members really focus on your value proposition and customers/users of your "Social Start-up Challenge" project.

Once you have enjoyed your lunch, Andreas and Janina accompany you and the rest of the group to visit a politically important building in Berlin called the Reichstag. This historical edifice was once constructed to house the Imperial Diet of the German Empire; today it is used by the German parliament (Bundestag) to hold their meetings and can be visited by tourists.

The day ends at around 5PM giving you some free time in the late afternoon and evening.

Day 9

9AM: You and your fellow participants are picked up at the hostel by Andreas and Janina, who transfer the group to the Social Impact Lab. There, you are in for the "BMC part II“ workshop. While you have previously focused on the value proposition and customer segments, you and your team now get to tackle the rest of the BMC. After receiving feedback from Andreas and Janina, you create different business models at first and later refine to eventually end up with one business model. Working with the BMC already helps you to focus on the 9 key areas you should touch upon in your final pitches on Friday of this week.

Strengthened and re-energized after lunch, you are transferred to another company visit at Bayer. Upon arrival, a senior manager gives our group a tour of the company grounds and holds a presentation. He is joined by a founder of a pharmaceutical start-up that works in the so-called Bayer CoLaborator – a research lab space for start-ups. The young entrepreneur gives another short presentation on his start-upʼs activities and is then open for any questions our group has.

After lunch at Alexanderplatz (the city center in the East of Berlin), you are off explore another historical and cultural highlight – the GDR Museum. This interactive museum represents a hands-on experience of history. The exhibition at the museum encourages you to touch, feel and interact, so as to reach a fun and full understanding of what it was like to be living in East Berlin during the time when the Berlin Wall was still standing. During your visit you may recognize some items, which you have seen in the movie "The Lives of Others" at the official Welcome Dinner.

In the late afternoon, you can either enjoy some free time OR join in on a unique Berlin street art tour. On this walking tour, a local street art guide takes you to different artistic murals throughout the city while sharing some background information on the pieces of street art (see photo of elephant mural) and artists. If you choose to go on the street art tour your day ends at around 6PM.

At lunch time you can either eat at the St. Oberholz café or choose one of the plenty other options close by.

Wednesday afternoon is comprised of another company visit at Rocket Internet – an incubator and investor in internet companies with proven business models. Upon arrival, a manager gives us a tour of the Rocket Internet grounds and provides a more in-depth presentation on the companyʼs activities.

The day ends at around 5PM giving you some more free time to roam around the city.

Day 11

9AM: You and your fellow participants are picked up at the hostel by Andreas and Janina, who transfer the group to another company visit at Axel Springer – one of the largest digital publishing houses in Europe. Upon arrival, a manager gives us a tour of the Axel Springer grounds and provides a more in-depth presentation on the companyʼs activities.

Thursday morning continues with a visit at Anderland Systems – a social start-up that provides regenerative technology solutions to people, who are effected by climate change. Upon arrival, one of the start-upʼs founders gives us a short presentation on their company and shares some of their current projects with us.

After a lunch break, everyone is transferred back to the Social Impact Lab for a "Review Session“ held by Andreas and Janina. In this session, you and your team members get to prepare for the pitching competition. Andreas and Janina act as coaches and give you the opportunity to receive individual feedback. You can also decide what you wish to work on and when your team is finished.

The late afternoon and evening offer some more free time to explore the city.

Day 12

9AM: You and your fellow participants are picked up at the hostel by Andreas and Janina, who transfer the group to the programʼs last company visit at Berliner Sparkasse – a traditional German bank, which is highly active in the entrepreneurship scene in Berlin providing different financing options for founders.

Upon arrival, the Head of Start-up Financing and his colleague guide the group to an executive meeting room and give a more in-depth presentation about their company. One of the two gentlemen from the Berliner Sparkasse will also represent a member of the jury listening to the consecutive pitching competition. One local entrepreneur, Andreas and Janina make up the remaining three members of the jury to evaluate the pitches.

The pitching competition, as the grand finale for you and your teamʼs work, is also held at Berliner Sparkasse. Each student team gets a challenging 3 minutes in order to present their "Social Start-up Challenge" project to the jury. After a short celebration honoring the winning team with a prize, you can choose between plenty of lunch options around the area of Alexander-platz.

After some free time in the afternoon, our exciting 2-week journey ends with an official Farewell Dinner at a traditional German restaurant called Hofbräuhaus Berlin – a German beer brewery that also serves southern German food. The official Farewell Dinner ends at around 10PM.

Departure Day

You check out of the hostel and make your way to Tegel Airport (TXL) individually.

Day 10

9AM: You and your fellow participants are picked up at the hostel by Andreas and Janina, who transfer the group to Ashoka – a global organization that identifies and invests in leading social entrepreneurs. Upon arrival, a manager welcomes our group by providing more in-depth information on their current and future activities.

Afterwards, Andreas and Janina guide everyone back to one of St. Oberholzʼs meeting rooms for their "Golden Circle“ workshop. With the Golden Circle model, you and your team members learn how you can effectively change your communication, e.g. in terms of a Marketing message from your company to its customers, a personal message through which you wish to convince your friends and family or a pitch of your "Social Start-up Challenge" idea to members of a jury (or potential investors). This model is one of our favorites and prepares you extremely well for Fridayʼs pitching competition.
