In 1993 the Tamarindo marsh won the degree of World Important

Wetland by the RAMSAR Convention.

The Tamarindo Wild Life Natural Shelter protects

a wetland that covers the 80% of its territory. It is

made up of many mangrove species (Tamarindo’s

marsh).

It has a coast area starting from Punta Ventanas

up to the east side from the Tamarindo’s marsh. It

has a mix territory, from both: private and state.

It is found on the transition to dry tropical life

zone. It has a coast forest with shades ideal for

great migratory bird populations; black oak

forest, hot and sunny; guacimo forest with crab

colonies and fauna variety.

Rincón de la Vieja is one of the most active volcanoes in Costa Rica. During this nature hike you

will find bubbling mud, steaming sulfur and fumaroles while you explore the two miles of trails

through the forest. It is a rigorous, but spectacular, and breathtaking hike around the area of Las

Pailas. Along the hike, some 32 rivers rise out of this protected area, including the Colorado River

and the Río Blanco, which carve through a white volcanic ash call ignimbrite. These rivers pro-

vide water to the Tempisque River, one of the most important in the province of Guanacaste.

RINCÓN DE LA VIEJA NATIONAL PARKS

MONTEVERDEThis story starts in the early 1950s, when a group of Quakers from the

United States left their homes in Alabama and arrived in Monteverde at a

time when the region was just beginning to be settled. The Quakers estab-

lished a simple life in this area which centered on dairy and cheese produc-

tion. In 1972, this rainforest was threatened by local farmers looking to

expand their property and homestead on certain forest sites. With this

prospect in mind, scientists joined forces with longtime residents to pro-

mote the establishment of a nature preserve and, as a beautiful result, the

Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve was born; an area that is acclaimed as

one of the most outstanding wildlife refuges in the Tropics of the New

World. You will experience it from treetop walkways. This feels like walking

into a grand, green Cathedral, as you see majestic, tall trees festooned with

orchids, bromeliads, ferns, vines, and mosses. Imagine yourself in a beauti-

ful garden. Now, imagine over 100 beautiful hummingbirds flying cheerfully

around you! For the finishing touches, you will be able to explore a commu-

nity that gathers more than 20 species of butterflies, and learn about their

life cycle, their special abilities and behaviors that have helped them evolve

into each different species.
