    1) Environmental Protection (ground-, surface waters, soil, air),

Agro industry the largest polluter in China, in 2007: 20.000 Large and

    medium-sized livestock farms: 3.1 bill t/a waste (2009)

    2) Greenhousegas mitigation (Climate change, Kyoto Protokol, low carbon

economy), 40-45% CO2 emission reduction per GDP unit in 2020

    3) Renewable Energy (substitution of fossil energies, energy safety,

sustainable development,), 2020: 40 m to sceq. including 3 GW from

    MLSBPs

    4) Rural socioeconomic Development

Benefits of solid liquid - gaseous Biomass fuels compared towind solar - hydro:

    1) Locally available distributed Energy source2) As long as biomass from wastes is concerned environmental

pollution is a required win win effect, gate fees apply

    3) Provided a stabile base loud energy production and even peak load

    demand coverage

    4) Biogas can be used fortransport (vehicle) fuels with alt least 30%

    higher efficiency than liquid biofuels

    5) Biogas (- methane) easy to store (f.e in gas grids)

    6) Enhances rural development better than other renewable

Why Biomass Energy in the RE Energy mix ?

Integrated Renewable Biomass Energy Development Project

Improved efficiency of rural biomass renewable energy system and rural social benefits

    Outcome by 2015:

About 90% of the waste of sub-project farms is collected and treated via biogas plants

About 70 million cubic meters of biogas are produced per year for rural energy use

About 41,000 households, including 8,200 poor households benefit from improved access toclean energy

About 27,000 farmers increase their incomes through expanded contract farming

About 9,000 poor households benefit from the use oforganic fertilizers and the sales of

    organic products

Greenhouse gas emissions reduced by about 1 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent

Overall Project Objective* of the GIZ Biomass Utilization Project/ GIZ

to improve the technicalstandard and the (operational)performance of medium- and

large-scale biogas plants(MLBGPs) that produce energyfrom biomass.

In the context of the ADB supported
