We’ve been so busy since her return that we haven’t really had a good catch up about her travels but I’m sure there are plenty of good stories to come. It would be remiss of me not to thank Peter Safralidis on behalf of the Berri Primary School community for the outstanding job he did while in the Deputy Principal position. Maria was certainly a tough act to follow and Peter stepped into the role as though he’d been doing it for years. His efforts were greatly appreciated by all of us. Pupil Free Day Last Friday the Berri Primary School teachers continued their Visible Learning Training. We spent the day with teachers from all the other schools in the Berri/Barmera Partnership learning more about what teaching strategies have the greatest impact upon student learning. One part that really resonated with me was the importance of strong relationships with children in order to maximise student learning. This is something that I believe we do extremely well at Berri Primary School and is one of the reasons our classroom environment is so calm and settled. School Dog In the next newsletter I will hopefully be introducing you to our latest staff member namely Poppy our school dog. There has been significant research released in recent years outlining the benefits of therapy dogs in a school setting. It is intended that Poppy will regularly visit classes and be a helping hand when some of our kids that are doing it tough. Watch this space. CLASS PLACEMENTS FOR 2019 We will begin the process of placing students for 2019 in the near future. Parents who wish to provide input into the placement of their child can collect a proforma from the office. Educational and social grounds will be considered with the needs of the school. Be aware that requests may not be able to be met. Requests for specific teachers will not be considered. Requests need to be returned to the Front Office by Friday 28th September 2018 (last day of term 3) as we will begin class placements in week 1 of term 4. FROM THE PRINCIPAL

We welcome back Maria Rivera from her amazing holiday overseas. Collaboration!

Is our learner quality focus in Term 3. Our students are talking about how collaboration can help us

with our learning. It’s one of the learner qualities that can help us to climb out of the learning pit!

You may hear your children talk about how collaboration can:

* Help us to learn from each other *Teach us to share and liste

n to each others ideas *Give us a

chance to try out ideas through dialogue * Help us to understand whether we are on the right track

or not when solving a problem *Teach us to ask questions * D

raw out each others strengths

Health and Physical Education with Mr Coote

Hi all,

The growth in mental strength and willingness to improve personal skills continues positively at Berri Primary. With the learning intention and success criteria discussion points included in PE lessons, students are able to continually reflect upon their learning journey and build upon a confident learning experience each week. This is evident in the way students are questioning aspects of team play and supporting other individuals during PE lessons. Last week during PE lessons, students from Year 4 to Year 7 engaged in a series of fitness activities. Here is a short movie showcasing some of the students engaging within each activity:

https://youtu.be/nYhM4f-FPUE.

For the next two weeks, students from Reception to Year 5 will be

engaged in cricket skills and the Upper Primary classes in modified

Aussie Rules.

I hope you talk up Berri Primary in the community as the staff and

students are consistently working towards creating an exceptional

learning environment for all involved.

School Sport Update with Mr Coote

Good luck to the two Berri teams competing at the district Tag

Rugby day being held at the Berri Town Oval. Miss Brown and

Andrew Baker will be supporting the students as they compete

against other school teams from across the district.

Congratulations to Taj R. who has been selected into the School

Sport SA Riverland team to compete at the country championships

on the 24th September. Taj will be competing in Shot Put. At these

championships, Taj will have a chance of being selected into the

South Australia team, depending on results, to compete in

Melbourne later this year.

Recently, a group of year 3 and 4 students trialled to represent

Berri Primary at an upcoming regional Hot Shots tennis gala day on

Thursday 30th August. Two teams were selected consisting of 8 boys

and 8 girls. Each team will continue to train during lunch over the

next two weeks in preparation for the event. This is a rare

opportunity for these year levels to participate in organised

inter school sport so these students were very keen to represent

their school.

The second annual Berri PS versus Barmera PS Challenge Day is

being held on Friday 31st August. Berri PS hosted the inaugural

event in 2017. Both PE teachers from each school discussed ways of

allowing students from their respective schools to meet each other in

a pre-high school fun event. The sports played are 12 a side

Australian Football, 9 a side mixed soccer and 7 a side girls

netball. Each sport has a cup that the winning school can place in

their trophy cabinet for the next year.

District Athletics Wrap Up

On the 10th of August a determined team of 28 students, from

a selected 35, attended the District Athletics day in Loxton. The

journey of these 28 athletes has been amazing. Their positive

attitude in the way they represented and competed for Berri

Primary School showed that they were capable of taking on

feedback and then applying that feedback into improving their

own development.

Winding the clock back a little to term 2, Receptions to Year 7

participated in a vigorous 7 week PE program focussing on

track and field events. The aim of this program was to expose,

instil and then capture within the Berri PS cohort an interest in

track and field (athletics). During the annual BPS sports day

event, many students showcased a significant improvement in

their athletic capabilities – especially in the field events. Many

had noted that they were impressed with the level of correct

technique that was being presented.

And as mentioned, on the 10th of August, 28 determined

students from Berri competed with pride and displayed

excellent skill at the annual District Athletics day. At the district

event, the main focus, other than competing and testing your

skills and abilities against other students, is to gain selection

into the School Sport SA Riverland Athletics team to compete at

the State Country Championships. Gaining selection into this

particular team is always difficult. Especially when there are so

many talented athletes in the Riverland and only the winner of

each event is selected. Now knowing the journey of the students

and the challenge of gaining selection – take a close look at

the results of these amazing students and how close many of

them came to gaining selection.
