Southern Barossa Alliance Hosting of the Hostworks First Stage of the Santos Tour Down Under in the Southern Barossa presented many challenges to an enthusiastic group of local volunteers supporting the event. Early on there was plenty of excitement about hosting such a high profile international cycling event with a finish at Lyndoch, three loops through Cockatoo Valley, Williamstown and Lyndoch and two sprints in Cockatoo Valley. The first challenge was to get an organising team together following recent changes in the local Community Committee structure as part of The Barossa Council’s Redefining Community Committees Project. Consequently, the Southern Barossa Alliance, recently revamped to promote both community and business development in the Southern Barossa, took on a leading role to coordinate local volunteer support for the event. Under the mentoring of Councillor Bim Lange, Chair of the Barossa Council TDU Working Party partnerships, with the local volunteer groups, the TDU Working party, the Santos TDU Event coordinators, The Barossa Council and Tourism Barossa were formed. Funding was provided directly by The Barossa Council and the resources of the Williamstown Community Council and the Lyndoch and District Community Group were pooled to support event marketing, street decoration, entertainment, catering and volunteer recruiting. Key goals were to hold a very successful Santos TDU Hostworks Stage 1, to promote volunteering in our community, to promote local food, wine and community groups and to showcase our region to the world. We were very lucky to recruit the support of major event organiser and local Andrew Dundon from Tourism Barossa. Andrew brought with him significant event organisation experience and contacts, venue design skills, artistic flair and enthusiasm for local events. The theme of Forest to Vines was established and local Sam Cowley designed a very professional poster that formed the basis of our advertising effort. Everyone had a great time decorating, lead by Robyn Dennard and Helen Elliott in Williamstown, Reuben Batten and Sharyn Bobridge in Lyndoch and Sue Poole in Cockatoo Valley. A huge number of bikes were donated and Guy Bobridge and Jeff Bellman did a sterling job spray painting them. Hundreds of corflute Guernseys were cut out and painted, the kids at the primary schools handmade hundreds of metres of bunting and many trees were wrapped. A highlight was the team of Lyndoch “yarn bombers” lead by Sonya Batten and Carol Hopgood. What an incredible job they did, crocheting and knitting yarn bombs for over 100 trees and posts. It looked fantastic and certainly was a significant contributor to Lyndoch being awarded the best dressed town for the first stage. Rick Burge was also a key contributor spending many hours shifting sprinklers and providing the water to make sure the Lyndoch Village Green was actually green on the day. The very colourful Super Heroes straight at St Jakobi School was outstanding. The Best Dressed private residence was Sue Poole of Williamstown. The helicopter pilot had the best view of the Paddocks and Schools category winner -the Breakaway’s on Yettie Road, Williamstown they went to great lengths to mow a giant bike into their paddock and dressed it up into a colourful masterpiece. The Kaddatz family of Lyndoch were presented with the Special Innovation award. Andrew Dundon designed our rustic Southern Barossa Gourmet Village, which looked fantastic and was well supported by local community groups, wineries and mainly local food providers. Thanks also to Irene Liebelt and Mark Cooper for organising the market stalls and the Liebelt family and Barossa Young Life for facilities at Jollytown Road corner. Similarly Williamstown set up terrific facilities for locals and visitors. A real challenge was a wind gust demolishing ten stall holder tents during the Women’s Tour on the Monday before the Santos TDU, fortunately the contractor worked hard to quickly replace them. Four days out we were planning on a brilliant, sunny, calm, 28 degree day and a huge crowd. Then things changed rapidly with a temperature of 40 Degrees, a stiff breeze and high fire risks forecast. We invoked our High Temperature Contingency plan and with Council assistance and our great band of volunteers rose to the challenge to provide additional shade and misting tents. Despite the heat on the day the Hostwoks First Stage of the Santos TDU went extremely well with the lower than expected numbers impacting on stall holder and local business takings. Everyone appeared to have a great time, the misters were a hit and many visitors commented on how great the towns looked. The Council staff and volunteers did a fantastic job on the day and packing up afterwards.

"This years Santos TDU demonstrated a coming together not seen to such an extent in previous years. All key stakeholders consisting of the revamped Southern Barossa Alliance representatives, supported by a band of enthusiastic volunteers from Lyndoch, Cockatoo Valley and Williamstown and others from Tourism Barossa, Barossa Council staff including Barossa VIC and Library showcased our magnificent region. Congratulations and thanks to all involved for an exceptional effort." Bim Lange, Chair Barossa TDU Working Party

Highlights were: 1. Solid proof that the Southern Barossa can very successfully support a looped Stage of the Santos Tour Down Under. With the challenges of the weather, this practice run certainly has given us plenty of confidence that we can do even a better job next year.

2. Level of collaboration, innovation and involvement of the communities in the Southern Barossa.

3. Establishment of a passionate core planning team who made things happen, the successful partnership with Council and for Andrew Dundon coming onboard.

4. Level of volunteer support to establish the outstanding facilities on Colonist Corner and the Village Green. Particularly those who worked incredibly hard in the heat on Monday and Tuesday and for Rick greening the green. We have demonstrated that both Colonist Corner and the Lyndoch Village Green are very suitable venues for Community Events and that Cockatoo Valley

5. The level of volunteer support for the fantastic decoration of the towns and the vibrancy this brought to Williamstown, Lyndoch and Cockatoo Valley.

*Another positive* This week a visitor from Gold coast asked what the pom poms were all about. We told her about TDU. She wanted to buy some to hang in her trees as she loved the look. Imagine what she would of wanted had she of seen the rest of the yarn bombing

Volunteer Thank You Thank you so much for all of the volunteers who were really the core of the success of the TDU in the Southern Barossa. We had over fifty volunteers collecting and painting bikes, yarn bombing, decorating the streets, building the Gourmet Village, the misting systems and the incredible effort setting up and packing upon the day. The TDU Event Coordinators, Tourism SA CEO, the Mayor and many others have commented on how impressed they

were with the Community involvement in the event. It was just fantastic to see our community respond and to have fifty people at the Volunteer Thank You BBQ and drinks. Many thanks to the Lyndoch Cricket Club for opening up the Club at short notice due to the very inclement weather.

If you are interested in joining this great band of volunteers, please contact Simon Taylor Ph: 0439509207.

Fringe Winemakers vs Comedians Cricket Match The huge effort on the Tour Down Under has taken a lot of our volunteer effort and we have not been able to source a popular comedian or MC for the Winemaker vs Comedians Cricket Match scheduled for the 28th February. Unfortunately we have had to cancel the match this year and have started planning for running the match next year.

REX TO CLOSE TEMPORARILY February 1, 2016

The Rex Aquatic and Fitness Centre will be temporarily closed

for two weeks, as upgrades are undertaken to improve the

comfort of the facility for users.

Barossa Council, in conjunction with Belgravia Leisure, advises

the Centre will be closed from February 29 to March 11 to

enable the safe installation of evaporative cooling and

conversion to gas.

Mayor Bob Sloane apologises for any inconvenience the

temporary closure causes, but acknowledges the work that is

being undertaken will benefit Centre users in the long term.

“The cooling work will assist with the improved airflow and

reduce temperatures to the sports halls during the hottest

months, while the gas works will result in reduced fuel costings

for the Centre,” he said.

“With work of this nature, it is necessary to close the centre in

an effort to ensure the safety of all patrons.

“We have been working closely with Belgravia Leisure to

reduce any inconvenience felt by centre users and are

investigating possible options for fitness class activities.

“We are still in the process of exploring alternatives for

providing a reduced fitness class program free of charge

(except personal training), and will ensure regular updates

are provided to the community.”

To avoid confusion for users, the Rex car park will be

temporarily closed during the two week period. Council will

liaise directly with schools and users to keep them briefed on

the progress of the work, along with an accurate reopening

date. Direct debit payments for membership and swim school

will be suspended during the period of closure.

Regular updates will be posted on Council’s Facebook page

and also feature on

www.barossa.sa.gov.au.
