Pick – A Bridge or A Buffalo?Gr1 Champions Cup Hollywoodbets Greyville SaturdaySaturday’s R1 million Gr1 Champions Cup is the swansong appear-ance of Klawervlei sire prospect Undercover Agent who bids to go out on a winning note and give trainer Brett Crawford a third straight victory in the race.

Crawford’s record in this race is impres-sive. he also trained Jackson in 2013 and Futura to win in 2014. The latter regis-tered the double in 2015, but by then he had moved on to Justin Snaith. If under-cover agent wins on Saturday, Crawford would have won the race five times in the last seven renewals – with exacta’s the past two years.

While he was runner-up and beaten two lengths by his now retired stablemate Captain america in 2018, undercover agent is undoubt-edly at his most lethal from 1400m to a mile. he has twice tried past the 1600m – when beaten by Captain america and then in the Sun Met, where he was beaten 2,20 lengths into fourth by Rainbow Bridge at level weights. he came out fresh after that Met effort to win the Drill hall Stakes and was then probably run off his feet when carrying top weight and just over a length off Chimichuri Run in the Golden horse Casino Sprint. he had every chance in the Gold Chal-lenge, where, defending his 2018 title, he plodded late to run 2,55

lengths behind the superior Do It again – with Cirillo, Rainbow Bridge and Eyes Wide Open all in front of him.The Sporting Post top-rated Sun Met winner Rainbow Bridge reunites with his original successful pilot Richard Fourie, who has enjoyed a royal sea-son up here in KZN. With really smart placed efforts in the Drill hall, the Gold Challenge and a second best

in the July, this is the race that affords Rainbow Bridge the most likely oppor-tunity to score what would be a deserved first away victory. Super-fit, he

Scottsville sprint day, and Justin Snaith have dominated matters with four Gr1’s each, with Mike de Kock lifting the Gr1 Daily News with the enigmatic and slightly errant star, hawwaam. Those three men have, coincidentally, also domi-nated our national trainers championship for a decade, with Charles Laird the last ‘outsider’ back in 2008/9 – the dawning of the emergence of Markus Jooste’s Mayfair Speculators. The top jockeys ride for the top yards and reigning Sa champion Lyle hewitson and his senior counterpart Richard Fourie have ridden three Gr1 winners each, leaving one each for anton Marcus, Raymond Danielson and apprentice Luke Ferraris. So who can buck the trend on Saturday and pull a few back for the ordinary people?Veteran Tobie Spies has Golden Slipper winner Cockney Pride (Craig Zackey) taking on Gavin van Zyl’s Gabor (Warren Kennedy) in the Gr1 Thekwini.Nathan Kotzen saddles Gatecrasher Stakes winner Kaydens Pride (Muzi yeni) taking on Sean Tarry’s unbeaten bomb Eden Roc in the Gr1 Premiers Champion Stakes.Paul Gadsby’s Vision To Kill (Stuart Randolph) bumps Snaith sprint powerhouse Kasimir in the Gr1 Mercury Sprint.Candice Dawson saddles Infamous Fox (MJ Byleveld) who takes on the might of Rainbow Bridge, Buffalo Bill Cody and Soqrat in the Gr1 Champion Stakes.a few longshots and dream hopes they may well be – but they all start at the same place and they all want it badly. kasimir - the Mercury ManGr1 Mercury Sprint Hollywoodbets Greyville SaturdayOur Equus Champion Sprinter of the 2017/18 season, Will Pays is back to defend his R1 million Gr1 Mercury Sprint title at Hollywood-bets Greyville on Saturday.

The Mike and adam azzie-trained 7yo son of Imperial Stride beat attenborough a length in the 2018 renewal of the 1200m weight-for-age contest, and while the runner-up surprisingly failed to make the cut for Saturday’s contest, Will Pays jumps from the 1 draw and gets the services of top heavyweight Bernard Fayd’her-be in his bid for a back-to-back win. But his form profile is not as inspiring as the lead up to last year, where he had won the ha-

waii Stakes, been placed in the Drill hall and then came in off a Pinnacle Stakes score. he hasn’t won since last year – so it may be best to look elsewhere.a likely favourite for Equus Champion Sprinter, the consistent Sporting Post top-rated Kasimir probably needed the outing when running on late to be beaten 1,5 lengths by La Bella Mia in the Post Merchants last time. The son of Captain al should strip fitter and sharper and beat the best in the Cape summer. Look for a big effort!his talented stablemate Snowdance has drawn very wide and mixes it with the boys again – the last time being her unplaced effort in the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate. her recent placed efforts behind Celtic Sea in the Sa Fillies Sprint and Garden Province are indicators of her fitness and well-being. But she will need to be at her best to beat Kasimir.

now knows the track, has a top jockey in the irons and will be a popular choice.Mike de Kock saddles a top-class coupling of Soqrat and Buffalo Bill Cody, and looks the most likely party crasher for the Eric Sands challenger.a serious 3yo miler, horse Chestnut Stakes winner Soqrat gets the services of anton Marcus as he goes beyond a mile for the first time. he ran on strongly for fourth (2,40 lengths) behind July third-placer Twist Of Fate in the KRa Guineas and then pulled the same move when fourth again (1,80 lengths) off Do It again in the Gold Challenge. Either Soqrat doesn’t enjoy hollywoodbets Greyville too much, or he was given two rather ordinary rides by regular pilot Randall Simons. Saturday should half answer that question as he tries 1800m for the first time.his year older stablemate Buffalo Bill Cody finally gets a stab at a Gr1 trophy – and the son of Redoute’s Choice laid his claims with a hammering of Gold Challenge runner-up Ciril-lo last time out after a six months rest. This is his first start at hollywoodbets Greyville, but he comes with a massive reputation and the label of being ‘a machine’. We will find out how good he is on Saturday.Cirillo pulls the best draw and gets an opportunity to show he stays the 1800m. The son of July winner Pomodoro enjoys a 3kg turnaround at the weights after being beaten 3,25 lengths by Buffalo Bill Cody over a mile at Turffontein last time. his Drill hall Stakes and Gold Challenge efforts were top-class and Lyle hewitson may ride him more conservatively.his yard companion Matador Man ran third in this race in 2017 behind Sail South and Captain america but his recent attempts at the Gold Challenge and KZN Breeders Million suggest he will need to find more to challenge here.Candice Dawson’s Infamous Fox has continued to surprise friend and foe and put in a really brave effort to win the Listed Engen Performance Stakes on July day with a brave run up an almost non-existent gap up the inside rail. Reg-ular man MJ Byleveld climbs aboard again and while not troubled by the trip, the aussie-bred grey will find this a bit tougher.Daily News runner-up Twist Of Fate put up the courageous performance of the Vodacom Durban July when somehow clinging on to third position behind Do It again and Rainbow Bridge. he has more to do at the weights on Saturday, but will no doubt run his usual top-class game race.Regarded by many to be the hard-luck story of the July when knocked off his stride by eventual winner Do It again, Eyes Wide Open will be looking to improve on his third behind Captain america in this race last year – but has some finding to do at the weights with the likes of Rainbow Bridge.Cup Trial winner Kampala Campari is a dangerous front-run-ner but should struggle to assert at these weights.all told, it looks like a straight duel between Rainbow Bridge and the exciting Buffalo Bill Cody. It could come down to luck in running- with a bit of nervousness around the possi-ble myth of the second run after a rest monster in the case of Buffalo Bill Cody.

Super Saturday – But Watch Times Saturday’s race meeting at Kenilworth will start and end early in order to enable the first four races to be included on the PMu (French tote) betting menu. The first race at Kenilworth will start at 11h15 with 30-minute inter-vals between the first four races. The last of the eight races at the track will be run 15h30.French tote betting turnovers on South african races in such in-stances are huge and starting and ending the meeting early will earn significant revenue for the horseracing and tote betting operators in this country. There will be an abundance of five-star action for horseracing fans to bet on before and after the Kenilworth meeting. The eLaN Gold Cup race meeting at Greyville also takes place the same day with a 12-race programme, beginning at noon and ending at 19h40.There is also racing from Mauritius, Borrowdale Park in Zimbabwe and ascot in England. The ascot fixture includes the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Qipco Stakes, the premier race for older horses on the English horseracing calendar. The Gold Cup will be run at 16h20 and the King George 20 minutes later. The day kicks off just after 05h00 with flat racing from five australi-an racecourses.

‘Proper horse’ looks the PartGr1 Premiers Champion S. Hollywoodbets Greyville SaturdaySean Tarry could cement his claims to another SA trainer’s championship title when he saddles a powerful three- pronged hand in Saturday’s Gr1 Premiers Champion Stakes. The top trainer last won this event with The Hangman in 2012.Tarry has not had his best season ever but it’s been one of consistency and he could end it with a flourish on Saturday.his Sporting Post top-rated Var colt Eden Roc looks the banker of the day and a serious contender for Equus honours. The Varsfontein-bred galloper is now unbeaten in three starts.he has gone from strength to strength, proving his debut success over 1400m at Turffontein was no fluke when producing a turn of foot under hong Kong bound champion jockey Lyle hewitson – who retains the ride on Saturday – to impressively defeat highly rat-ed Frosted Gold a lot easier than the 0.60-length margin suggests in the Gr1 Tsogo Sun Gold Medallion in May.he then produced his most polished performance at hollywood-bets Greyville earlier this month when cruising to victory in the Gr2 Golden horseshoe.“he shows a lot at home and we know that he is a proper horse. he’s got a future and I think he is a horse we can be excited about.” That was a recent assessment of the lovely bay by his top trainer - and his charge looks to relish the step up to the mile. his stablemate Putontheredlight has unfortunately drawn wide and does not boast the same credentials as Eden Roc. But he was a deceptively pressured 0,30 length runner-up in the Golden horse-

winning chance, though – she gets the blinkers fitted.Kasimir is the standout at the top of the SP ratings and he has the credentials to win here. Frosted Gold is an interesting runner- don’t dismiss his prospects!

Pick 6 – R8 Million Expected

The 2018 Golden horse Casino Sprint winner Bold Respect is a solid citizen and always runs a gutsy race into the money. he has not won in over a year though but ran a decent prep when third in the Post Merchants after showing his customary toe.Sa Fillies Sprint and Garden Province winner Celtic Sea is a top-class filly who should be in the mix. her jockey is concerned about her drop back in trip after her mile success last time – but don’t leave her out.Golden horse Sprint winner Chimichuri Run has top-class Gr1 sprint form, with close-up places in the Diadem and the Com-putaform Sprint. The son of Trippi has a wide draw to beat here but will be running at them late and must go into all calculations.First of the De Kock australian-bred duo, alyaasaat has been a touch disappointing but has the advantage of a good draw to bring him into the reckoning for a place cheque.Top lightweight jockey Ryan Munger rides the 2yo Sa Nursery winner Frosted Gold for Mike de Kock. The smart son of all Too hard was a storming runner-up behind Eden Roc in the Gr1 Gold Medallion and comes in with just 52,5kgs on his back. It is very rare to see a 2yo in open Gr1 company and the De Kock genius could be a master move.Search Party was runner-up in this race behind Bull Valley in 2017 but has lost his better form and cannot be fancied from a wide draw. The former 2yo Gr1 winner Van halen has won 3 of his last 5 starts since a bleak Cape campaign and appears to relish the Greyville track. his formline is patchy and misleading. But he has the ability at best to challenge.africa Rising is a game consistent sort and is threatening to register his eighth win. he ran a cracking third to Chimichuri Run on the big hollywoodbets Scottsville speed day, and ran on strongly in the KZN Breeders Million Mile when only beaten 1,20 lengths by Morning Catch. he never runs a bad race.Paul Peter’s Potala Palace 3yo Palace Chapel was only beaten 1,65

lengths by Chimichuri Run in the Golden horse Sprint when report-ed coughing. he now takes on the Tarry charge on 2kgs worse terms.Post Merchants winner La Bella Mia led the boys a merry dance in that course and distance rout on 14 June. That was on handicap terms though and this will be infinitely tougher. The Kildonan mare Vision To Kill

has drawn well and must have a place shout on her penul-timate effort, when a mer-itorious third to Celtic Sea in the Gr1 Sa Fillies Sprint. her overall form does not suggest a

Var Rocks!avontuur’s champion sire Var, South africa’s Leading Sire of 2yo’s for the past two seasons running, made the news on 25 May when Saturday’s Premiers Champion Stakes favourite Eden Roc and his year older paternal half-brother Vardy won the Gr1 Tsogo Sun Gold Medallion (1200m) and Gr3 Winter Classic – the later over 1800m down at Kenilworth. They thus became Var’s 46th and 47th stakes winners respec-tively, with Eden Roc the ninth individual G1 winner sired by the son of Forest Wildcat – who is currently responsible for 23 individual Gr1 performers in total. The Sean Tarry trained Eden Roc was the second Var son to win the Gold Medallion – with the Vaughan Marshall-trained Villan-dry having won the race back in 2009.Out of the Gr2 winning Captain al mare Townsend, Eden Roc is bred on the same Var/Captain al cross as fellow graded stakes winners Ghaalla and William The Silent.

a smashing victory on July day in the Slipper. Craig Zackey was highly complimentary in the post-race interview, suggesting she was an athletic filly that gave him the feel of a very decent horse. On Saturday she gets tested over 200m further and needs to beat her draw.Runner-up to Cockney Pride in the Slipper, Captain Of all’s Listed Devon air Stakes winning daughter What you are has also had no luck with the draw. The Spies duo had the race to themselves that day and they could repeat the feat on Saturday.Just 1,70 lengths behind in third there, after jumping from the worst of the draw, smart hollywoodbets Greyville debut winner Gabor will have the advantage of a nice 2 gate here and looks a live challenger.True To Life faded out to a 3,35 length fifth there and had no ex-cuses with the draw. The manner in which she was backed - and then coasted into the lead, grabbed the attention. But she had little to come when asked and went rather one-paced. anton Marcus keeps the ride, which is a good sign.It looks tough for the balance.Kayla’s Champ was beaten 4,35 lengths in the Golden Slipper and will need to improve.Victoria Paige was a further 0,55 lengths in arrears after winning her first two starts well. She has a more advantageous draw on Saturday and hails from a top yard.Richard Fourie takes the reins on David Niewenhuizen’s Mill Queen, a winner of her last two starts. She has shown good gate speed and has a top jockey in the irons.

Recent polytrack maiden winner Jacks’ Bird has more to do here but has done little wrong in two starts.Castellano is another with three good runs to her credit – the last over 1500m when beaten 1,25 lengths by Simply Russian. The Paul Peter yard have been in red hot form and the recent Vaal

maiden winner Swept Off My Feet takes her chances. She showed good toe at her first two starts a two-time winner in lesser company,

Snaith’s Gold Watch Gr3 Gold Cup Hollywoodbets Greyville SaturdayJustin Snaith has had a great run with the progeny of Twice Over. His 4yo Doublemint has now reached the stage where he can step up and demonstrate his undoubted ability and give the Cape team a tick off their feature bucket list.

Despite returning season after sea-son with a powerful wave of equine diversity, Justin Snaith is yet to win the Gold Cup and nothing would give them a bigger thrill to lift the coveted 3200m marathon trophy after a long, hard season. Our Vodacom Durban July top-rated runner – and again top rated here – and a dark horse in many calcu-

lations, Doublemint looked dangerous halfway down the home straight in the big race only to fade to finish ninth and 3,70 length off his illustrious stablemate. he is yet to race beyond 2400m and won the Winter Derby of his year. If he stays, he looks a massive contender from a nice draw with anton Marcus in the irons. There are some who may prefer his stablemates Strathdon and Made To Conquer.Fourth in this race last year, Strathdon is the mount of first choice Snaith jockey Richard Fourie and was forced to play an active roll for a long way in the Gold Vase before being run out of it late by Walter Smoothie. If allowed to be ridden more conservatively here, he could be in the mix.Made To Conquer finished just behind Strathdon last year after going close in the July three weeks earlier. he must be considered. Topweight Roy had Enough was suggested as a possible Gold Cup candidate by anton Marcus after his Track & Ball Derby win. The son of Pierro did not run a bad race in the July (seventh and 2,75 lengths behind Do It again) and gets the services of Piere Strydom – looking for a second Gold Cup win.Dawn assault was third in the Track & Ball Derby and is a hard-knocking entire who can challenge if he stays. Dark Moon Rising was beaten 4,80 lengths into sixth behind Its My Turn in the Gold Cup last term. he has the scope and ability to challenge for place money.Lonsdale winner Liege is an enigmatic sort but must have a chance if he strips fit.The Dynasty mare Dynasty’s Blossom ran a cracking prep when flying up late down the inside to be beaten a quarter length by Walter Smoothie in the Gold Vase. While she hasn’t won in ages, her form has been decent and she tries the 3200m for the first time. She is also the most expensive purchase in the field. The 6yo Wealthy probably earned his berth here after catching the eye when staying on late and under two lengths behind Walter Smoothie in the Gold Vase. his form prior to that was a bit iffy – but he is bred to go all the way and could have found a late niche in his racing career.Sa Oaks winner Secret Potion has been a little quiet recently and may just have needed the run when beaten ten lengths behind

Magnificent Seven | Chase Liebenberg

Roy had Enough in the Track & Ball Derby. Brett Crawford’s Gimme One Night has enjoyed something of a dream prep for his main target this season and the 5yo’s storming runner-up finishes in the Lonsdale and the Consolation July bring him straight into the reckoning. The Chairmans handicap winner stays the 3200m and looks a serious candidate for top honours.Track and Ball Oaks runner-up Flichity By Farr stayed on without threatening in the Gold Vase on July day. She has mixed it with the males at the top levels of the staying ranks and is always a danger.Consolation July winner Shenanigans is a temperamental sort but stays very well and has a big chance if he settles. The Dynasty entire is given a decent chance by jockey Lyle hewitson, who says that can go close if he settles.Fourth of the fairer sex quintet, Sunshine Silk has drawn wide out but has always had this race in her sights since winning the Gold Bowl in May. She stays all day and will strip fit.her stablemate ali Bon Dubai stays well and ran a decent prep when staying on for fifth and under two lengths behind Shenani-gans in the Consolation July. PE Gold Cup champion Onesie is in a rich vein of form, having won her last three races on the trot. She is the only Eastern Cape challenger – Cereus the previous winner from that region in 2001.Snaith holds all the aces and he could dominate the finish with Doublemint and Strathdon set to hold Made To Conquer and Roy had Enough.

93 Years Of GoldFirst run in 1926 for a stake of just 2000 pounds, the Gold Cup boasts a proud history – despite tumbling to Gr3 status in recent ears.Sun Lad won the first running and carried just 46 kgs when winning at odds of 9-1.he raced in the silks of leading owner-breeder Sir abe Bailey, and the Gold Cup was one of just two wins for Sun Lad during the season. he is frankly unlikely to be regarded as one of the race’s better winners. The first horse to win the Gold Cup on two occasions was humidor, who was victorious in 1933 and 1935. Candican put up one of the greatest weight carrying achievements ever seen in the race, another gallant effort came in 1930, when Glen albyn ran second under 9 stone 10 – or 136 lbs. he was beaten just half a length, giving the winner, artist Glow, one stone. To date, four horses have won the Gold Cup twice, but the last horse to win South africa’s premier staying race in consecutive years was highland Night, who won the race in 2002 and 2003.In 1977 Don The Stripe and Pacer shared the spoils – the only dead-heat in history. The late Charlie Barends won the Gold Cup seven times, including back to back wins with Chez Monty in 1949 and 1950. Felix Coetzee equalled Barend’s achieve-ment when he won on Bella Bianca in 1998 surpassed that record when he registered his eighth win on In Writing in 2012.

Black ‘n GoldGr2 Gold Bracelet Hollywoodbets Greyville SaturdayJustin Snaith is well represented in his double bid to win the R400 00 Gr2 Gold Bracelet at Hollywoodbets Greyville.

The fillies and mares 2000m contest is run at weight-for age plus penalties for Gr1 and Gr2 victories in the past 18 months. The Sporting Post top-rated is the Den-nis Drier stalwart Lady In Black – one of three daughters of the late star Dynasty in the line-up. With three tough races against the boys behind her, the 4yo

looks set to bounce back – if the exertions of the Gold Challenge and the July have not taken the edge off her.The Justin Snaith pair of Miyabi Gold and Woolavington winner Silvano’s Pride have to be taken very seriously and with Fourie riding the title holder, we are leaning towards her.a very smart 4yo, Miyabi Gold ran on the heels of the placed horses in the Vodacom Durban July – just over two lengths separating her and her illustrious stablemate, Do It again. If she strips fresh after that big effort, she must have a serious winnin chance from the draw.Silvano’s Pride went all the way to win the Woolavington and comes in fresh off a six week breather. She will need things to go her way -but has master pace judge Bernard Fayd’herbe in the irons.Roy’s Riviera has lost her form and needs to improve on her re-cent showings to have a shout here.Running Brave is one of the most consistent 3yo’s around and she was rewarded with a lesser prize when she put her host of places behind her to beat Rockin Russian last time out. She has run close to the best and showed plenty of enthusiasm at her last holly-woodbets Greyville start when fifth in the KRa Guineas.Sabina’s Dynasty appears much better than her recent form and

despite a wide draw, she must have a decent chance of finding the winner’s enclosure again after an extended absence. There is not much between her and Miyabi Gold on their Scarlet Lady clash.Sylvan On Fire appears to have lost her better earlier form but is a capable mare who runs for Gavin Lerena.

a Gr1 winner earlier this term, the gutsy Camph-oratus ran a cracking 2,60 length sixth in the July and if her pulling up distressed has not left her flat, she must

Fleetfooted SarahGr2 Umkhomazi Stakes Hollywoodbets Greyville SaturdayAnother race to enjoy upgraded status, the R300 000 Gr2 Umk-homazi Stakes has attracted a capacity quality field - including four members of the fairer sex.Trainers have achieved some success with the strategy of running their fillies, for a host of tactical reasons, against the boys – Sean Tarry and Tobie Spies probably the two standout tacticians.Interestingly, for Saturday’s race, two of the quartet of fillies are amongst the Sporting Post’s top-rated trio.Paul Peter’s Sarah is top of our ratings and this daughter of What a Winter will have plenty in her favour with Piere Strydom in the irons and the advantage of a 1 draw. She is a winner of three of her six starts, with her worst ever run being ten lengths behind Mercury Sprint candidate Frosted Gold in the Sa Nursery. She will have to be at her best to beat recent KZN yearling Sale Million winner african Warrior. Dean Kannemeyer’s smart Vercingetorix gelding has been a model of consistency but now has to contend with a bad draw.Drawn just inside of him, the superfast Strelitzia Stakes winner Singforafa reverts to the sprints after being outgunned and fading in the Golden Slipper.Mike de Kock’s alramz may be better suited to the 1200m after being caught late by Kaydens Pride in the 1400m Gatecrasher Stakes. he looks a promising sort and can make amends here.

Stars On ShowSome Equus championship titles will have already been wrapped up by the time the Gr2 Gold Bracelet is run under the lights at hollywoodbets Greyville on Saturday.Interestingly, the Gold Bracelet defending champion Miyabi Gold is a daughter of Silvano, while her stablemate and recent Gr1 Woolavington winner Silvano’s Pride shares the same sire. The latter is out of the Jet Master mare, Mary’s Pride.and it is Maine Chance Farm’s Silvano, who also has Sylvan On Fire in the Gr2 feature, who will be crowned the champion sire for the fourth time - while seven-times national champion sire Jet Master will be champion damsire for the first time. The Freshman Sire title is still open with Captain Of all (Cap-tain al), Vercingetorix (Silvano) and Soft Falling Rain (National assembly) in the running. The Breeders championship has been wrapped up by the Mary Slack and Jessica Jell-owned Wilgerbosdrift and Mauritz-fontein Stud breeding operation. Slack and Jell are harry and Bridget Oppenheimer’s daughter and granddaughter respec-tively and this will be the first time the renowned Oppen-heimer family have won the championship.

An open RaceGr2 Debutante Hollywoodbets Greyville SaturdayWith so many of our features under threat or already having been downgraded, it’s good to note that the R300 000 Debu-tante has been elevated to Gr2 status. The quality of the past winner roll is testimony to a platform for future achievement. The form is sketchy, so it is best that caution is exercised. The Sporting Post top-rated is the promising Time Thief filly yessiricanboogie, a runaway winner on debut and a subsequent decent fourth in the Gr1 allan Robertson Championship. Rested nine weeks she comes in with a wide draw to beat.Sean Tarry’s two-time winner Montreal Mist is a promising daughter of Soft Falling Rain with track experience and fair form

Duke’s IcebreakerThe 2018 Gr3 Debutante was the race that gave Paarl-based trainer Glen Kotzen the honour of saddling a first Sa-bred stakes winner for Drakenstein stallion Duke Of Marmalade .The lovely chestnut Temple Grafin also gave the combination of Richard Fourie and Chrigor Stud a nice double in the race after Princess Peach won in 2017.a R300 000 Cape Premier yearling Sale graduate, Temple Grafin was bred by Fran Cowe and is a daughter Duke Of Marmalade (Danehill) out of the one-time winner Inner Temple (Greys Inn).Duke Of Marmalade is represented by Tobie Spies’s Favour Stud bred Impressive Duchess in Saturday’s renewal. Cartier Cham-pion Older Male in 2008 and a five time Gr1 winner, Duke Of Marmalade has grown in stature in the ensuing year to build on his success on the international stage. his latest was the Gr3 Champagne Stakes winner Nastergal at Kenilworth last Satur-day. Read more about the Duke’s success on page 19

What a RunThe umkhomazi Stakes was won in 2018 by Saturday’s Gr1 Mercury Sprint contender Chimichuri Run, who was ridden by S’manga Khumalo. The Drakenstein Stud-bred son of Trippi was saddled by Sean Tarry and raced in a partnership of Mayfair Speculators and Chris van Niekerk.he now races solely for Chris van Niekerk.Out of the versatile three time winner Spiced Gold (Kahal), he cost R1,1 million on the Cape Premier yearling Sale and was earlier placed in the Sa Nursery and the Gold Medallion. Chimichuri Run recently achieved a career peak victory when storming home to win the Gr1 Golden horse Sprint at Scottsville at end May.he has won four races so far and earned over R1,5 million.

The upwardly mobile Gauteng raider De La Cruz has won 3 of his 4 starts and with Richard Fourie in the irons will have his supporters. It won’t be easy from the 11 draw at his first start at hollywoodbets Greyville., though.Master Jay looks held by african Warrior on their KZN yearling Sale Million clash.

It looks tough for the bal-ance.

The Equus Awards organising com-mittee has commenced preparations for this year’s Equus Awards to hon-our the champions of the turf, both human and equine. The awards ceremony will take place at the Convention Centre, Emperors Palace on Tuesday 13 august 2019.The voting panel, represented by David Thiselton, alistair Cohen, Matthew Lips and Lennon Maharaj with Larry Wainstein as non-voting Chairperson, submitted their first round of nomina-tions after the Vodacom Durban July Day.The final nominees and voting will be finalised after this Saturday’s Gold Cup raceday. The equine awards are based on grad-ed races, and in particular Gr1 races.as regards the stayer category, the winning horse will be at the discretion of the voting panel. This decision was taken as the only Gr1 race in Sa is the Sa Derby, which would mean that this should be the obvious winner based on a single run. This would also have excluded fillies and mares. The awards take the form of a for-mal black-tie gala event which is an important event on the annual racing calendar.Clyde Basel will be the master of ceremonies for the evening and guests will be treated to dinner and an array of entertainment with an after party at the same venue.a limited number of seats will be available to members of the public. In-terested parties should contact Penny Morsner at 011 683-3220.Press release issued by Larry Wain-stein, Chairman of the Equus Commit-tee, on 19 July 2019

Falcons To The ForeThe KZN Falcons lifted the New Turf Carriers inter-Provincial Rider Cup trophy for the first time at Holly-woodbets Greyville on Sunday. The popular jockey interprovincial clash produced a tight tussle with the Natalians preventing their rampant Northern neighbours, the highveld hawks, from securing their third con-secutive success.Ryan Munger came in as a late re-placement for an indisposed Gavin Lerena in the defending champion team, made up of Lyle hewitson, Muzi yeni and S’manga Khumalo. The favourites, the highveld hawks, got off to a good start when Muzi yeni won the opener on the Sean Tarry-trained highveld raider Over The Limit. De Melo was just touched off on Duchess Lane and that was a boost to the Falcons chances. however, S’Manga Khumalo and Lyle hewitson finished third and fourth in this race and Ryan Munger sixth, to give the hawks a tally of 54 after the first with the Falcons on 32 and the Cape Eagles on 26.But as the afternoon progressed, the KZN Falcons team of anton Marcus, Warren Kennedy, Keagan de Melo and Sean Veale were unstoppable and secured the trophy, with the in-form De Melo awarded the victor ludorum, with the highest individual total. The Cape Eagles team of Greg Cheyne, Richard Fourie, Bernard Fayd’herbe and Corne Orffer were third.De Melo collected an impressive 59 points to Bernard Fayd’herbe’s 47. yeni was third on 44 points. The final team standings were:Falcons 161hawks 135Eagles 130

Cape Jock Makes A Plan

Going into the final weekend of the season Richard Fourie has ridden 138 winners, and is ranked third in terms of stakes earned, with a whopping R21.3 million.and that’s without leaving Cape Town all that often.Tabnews reports that the bad news for his rivals is that Fourie plans to up his game in the new season, and as a first step has linked up with yvette Bremner in Port Elizabeth.“I’ll be travelling a lot more, and if the championship is within reach come March or april I’ll give it a full go.“yvette Bremner has very kindly agreed to assist me as her first choice Lyle hewitson is off to hong Kong. So I will be travelling to PE most Fridays.“I’m very happy to link up with such a highly consistent, respected, well estab-lished and successful yard. There is not enough racing in Cape Town to keep us going anyway” he adds with a laugh.

Why The World Loves SA RacingThe Snaith brothers have created their own kind of marketing alchemy, learning to turn South Africa’s tedious isolation by export restrictions and a relatively weak local currency, the rand, into advantages in recruiting international owners. The beauty of Cape Town, a jewel of a city lying at the base of picturesque mountains and caressed by the converging waters of the Indian and atlantic oceans at the southwestern tip of africa, also is a powerful elixir in drawing owners from abroad.Justin Snaith said that up to 80 percent of his current clients are based in other countries but love to compete in africa.“There’s something special about Cape Town, and it’s still one of the best value-for-money places in the world,” Snaith said. “We do a lot of work in Cape Town on the beaches and everyone just loves that. They come down and watch the horses work and then go for breakfast afterwards. “you can race for minimal amounts compared to say hong Kong or Singapore or England — we are a lot, lot cheaper,” he elaborated. “But, in saying that, the quality is still here — our stock is good. Because of our problems with exporting, we’ve kept a lot of our stock in South africa, whereas, like you saw in South america, their best horses are [sold and] exported and all of a sudden the quality diminishes a little bit. While [the export restrictions have] been against us, it’s also been an advantage for our racing.”Read Michele Macdonald’s full editorial on www.thoroughbredracing.com

Countdown to FestivalA rematch between Stradivarius (John Gosden) and Dee Ex Bee (Mark Johnston) is set to provide the best possible start to the Qatar Goodwood Festival on Tuesday, July 30.The two stayers head 13 confirmations for the highlight of day one, the £500,000 Gr1 Qatar Goodwood Cup over two miles.a length separated the duo last time out in the Gr1 Gold Cup over two and a half miles at Royal ascot on June 20, with Stradivarius coming out on top.Stradivarius, who was homebred by owner Bjorn Nielsen, is seeking a record-equalling third success in the Qatar Goodwood Cup following victories in 2017 and 2018. The five-year-old Sea The Stars horses is now unbeaten in his last seven starts. If successful on Tuesday and in york’s G2 Weatherbys hamilton Lons-dale Cup on august 23, Stradivarius would scoop the Weatherbys hamilton Stayers’ Million, with its £1-mil-lion bonus, for the second year in succession.Stradivarius is the 4/5 favourite with unibet, official betting partner of the Qatar Goodwood Festival, for the Qatar Goodwood Cup.Dee Ex Bee (5/1 with unibet) represents Britain’s winning-most trainer of all time, Mark Johnston, who was responsible for the only three-time winner of the Qatar Goodwood Cup, Double Trigger (1995, 1997 & 1998) as well as Royal Rebel (2000) and Darasim (2004).Prior to his Gold Cup second, Dee Ex Bee had won two G3 contests over two miles in 2019 – ascot’s Sagaro Stakes and the henry II Stakes at Sandown Park. The highlight of his three-year-old career was filling the runner-up spot in the G1 Derby at Epsom Downs be-hind Godolphin’s Masar.Charlie Johnston, assistant trainer to his father, gave an update on Dee Ex Bee today: “Dee Ex Bee is in good form and everything has been a1 with him since Royal ascot.“It is all systems go for the Goodwood Cup, but we are under no illusions about the task facing us with Stradivarius once again.Dee Ex Bee has been ticking over nicely and not much has changed with him or indeed the field he is likely to face on Tuesday. We will be facing the same rivals as in the Gold Cup, but we’re looking forward to running. It is going to be a big chal-lenge to win the contest, but he’s a top-class horse and hopefully he can serve it up to his rivals!”also going forward for the Qatar Goodwood Cup is Godolphin’s Cross Counter (Charlie appleby, 4/1), win-ner of australia’s greatest race the Gr1 Melbourne Cup in 2018 and a close fourth at Royal ascot to Stradivarius.

Lucinda, daughter of Geoff and Carol Woodruff, manages the famous family’s satellite yard at Milnerton.

ChangesChanges to the Cape racing programme sees the Cape Fillies Guineas moved to the second Saturday in December and the Cape Guineas to the third Sat-urday in December. This allows three weeks from the Dingaans, which is at the end of November, to optimise highveld partici-pation in the colts Guineas. The Fillies Mile will also be run three weeks before the Cape Fillies Guineas for the same reason.Winter

WarmerDiscussions are in place to restructure the Cape Winter Series for 2020. The platform of many top horses over the years has lost momentum for a variety of reasons. Plans are afoot to open it to all age groups.

SAD DAYuK Racing is mourning the loss of one of the best fillies it has seen this century after Sea Of Class died on Monday. Last year’s Prix de l’arc de Triomphe runner-up and Irish Oaks winner was initially showing signs she would recover from the colic surgery she underwent on 3 July and be saved for a stud career, but the discovery of a second tumour forced connections into a heart-wrenching decision.

Klawervlei Stud’s promising sire Pomodoro (Jet Master), the Leading First Crop Sire of 2017-2018, had a pair of smart winners on Saturday. The former Gr1 Vodacom Durban July

winner’s first success on Saturday came when his three-year-old son Destruction Boy made much of the running to break his maiden over 1200m at Kenilworth on Saturday. Pomodoro also enjoyed success at Turffontein on Saturday, when his three-year-old son Culture Trip scored a courageous win over 1400m. SnITzEL STARS

Lyle Hewitson

Twenty-one years old and with the world at his feet, reigning record-breaking South African champion lyle Hewitson jets out to Hong Kong on 11 August to build on the dream that took roots when the son of a jockey was just twelve years old.Locked in a tussle for his second consecutive national champi-onship title with his talented colleague and perpetual motion Winning Form-sponsored workaholic Muzi yeni, Lyle bids a fond farewell to his legion of fans and admirers at hollywoodbets Greyville on Saturday.Just nine wins ahead of the industrious yeni before Tuesday’s Vaal meeting, the avontuur-sponsored Lyle told the Sporting Post that he would be riding every day until the season ends on Wednesday 31 July.“It really has been a privilege and experience to feel the vibe and the way the racing public have warmed to the battle at the top of the log. at every racetrack I ride, the racegoers are egging us on and I believe some guys have resorted to only backing Muzi, anton Marcus and myself as part of their strategy. It looks like it will go right down to the wire and hats off either way to my colleagues. anton is a master jockey and Muzi never lets up – he keeps us all on our toes and is living proof that hard work reaps rich rewards,” says Lyle, in a compliment to his arch-rival.We asked him about the timing of the move East and how difficult it would be leaving behind win-ning partnerships that he has enjoyed with the likes of Sean Tarry and yvette Bremner.“I have been really fortunate to enjoy such fantastic support from so many people. yvette Bremner has always been supportive and that’s where I started – they understand my childhood dreams and ambitions and are right behind me. In Mr Tarry’s instance, I can only say that it is the mark of the man that he is that he has only ever encouraged me to take my chances in hong Kong. We have built a special relationship of trust – I have been riding work at his yard practically six days a week for four years. There is a massive mutual respect - despite my relative inexperience. I can give honest feedback and he can be critical - and I can take the input and use it positively,” he said maturely.

Lyle, who has six Gr1 winners to his credit, has enjoyed a mete-oric rise through the ranks since his Kearsney College days as a workrider. he hails from a family steeped in horseracing, with Mom Sam and Dad Carl both accomplished horse folk. While he says he has had long chats about hong Kong with Karis Teetan, who was visiting Sa this week, and the likes of former fellow avontuur rider Callan Murray, Lyle will be stepping on to hong Kong soil for the first time next month. We asked what was the most important aspect that was on his mind before he fell asleep at night.“I think that I’m going now for the right reasons at the right time. I’m starting on a clean slate. I believe that a good start is vital. Just like I did with my apprenticeship here, I got going quickly. Momentum and confidence go hand in hand. Let’s face it - luck will play a part, but I’m focussed and have the self-belief and the grounding to give it my very best shot.”he has been watching the hong Kong racing regularly.“It’s different to ours. The tempo and pace is on from the jump. The tracks are tighter. Getting a good position early is vital. I’d probably

liken the Greyville polytrack as the closest example.”Lyle has only ever ridden in abu Dhabi and then

Singapore last year.“This experience is part of my career growth

path. It’s what every jockey aspires to and I’m just so fortunate to get the opportunity now. It’s never easy making the break when one is established - but I have to do it.”Lyle’s 20 year old girlfriend hannah-Re-becca Runnalls will accompany him on the adventure. The hong Kong Jockey Club have requested he arrives three weeks before the season starts.

“I am really excited about the challenge. and glad I will have hannah there for the moral

support. I just have to thank so many people – the South african racing public have been wonderful; the trainers have been so helpful; the stable staff make it all happen behind the scenes; my sponsors have embraced me every step of the

way; my family are my foundation. I’m talking now as if I’m going to live on the moon!

But I really owe so many fantastic people so much. My success

has been a team effort. I’m a very lucky guy.”

Pippa Says...Lyle became one of South africa’s youngest ever sponsored riders when he joined the avontuur team on 1 November 2016.he was spotted as the ‘real deal’ by ea-gle-eyed avontuur GM Pippa Mickleburgh.Over the years, avontuur has utilised jockey sponsorships to carry the well-respected brand on tracks around the country and media outlets worldwide, linking into their successful stud and wine business.Pippa says that the core of the successful relationship that she enjoys with MJ Byleveld and Lyle hewitson is that it has always been a win-win for both sides.“Each of our jocks are ambassadors for avontuur and we appreciate their loyalty and support. The sponsorships assist with our brand building but also supports their dreams and aspirations, which makes it a win-win situation for all of us.”She said that Lyle would be missed by the entire South african horseracing fraternity.“he is a remarkable young man and is such a bright young talent. he ticks all the boxes. he is eloquent, mature, carries himself so well and has a professional attitude to everything he does. The fact that he became a champi-on along the way was a terrific achievement for him – and a bonus for us. he has become a part of the avontuur family over the past three years and we wish him every success in hong Kong and beyond. We know that he will make us all proud.”

Lyle’s Rides On SaturdayFirst race: Shango

“With capacity for improvement and scope amongst most of the youngsters, the 2yo races over a bit of ground can be a bit of a lottery at this stage. Shango stays well and I’d be happy with a quartet finish in a tough race.”

Second race: Moon In June“She is my only ride outside of the Tarry yard on the day. Robbie and Shannon hill’s stable has been in good form and I expect her to earn in a competitive race.”

Third race: Spiritofthegroove“a diminutive but very strong filly, she has answered the questions every time we have asked her. She is up against it but won’t be disgraced.”Fourth race: Spring Break“She is a speedy and tough filly and is very capable of earning against the boys.”

Fifth race: Keep Smiling“She is a very decent filly and I believe she warrants the opportunity of being thrown in the deep end. I think we’d be really thrilled with a top four finish.”

Sixth race: Eden Roc“Eden Roc is my best and most impor-tant ride of the day. he is a really classy

son of Var. he is in a good space and doing well. If there is one reservation it could be the question as to how he handles his first attempt at the mile. But he will be right there!”

Seventh race: Shenanigans“he stays well, but is an aggressive horse and it all hinges on his demean-our and behaviour – and whether he relaxes and allows himself to use his ability.”

Eighth race: Celtic Sea“She is a champion filly and loaded with class. It is a privilege to ride a horse of her ability and she is fit and well. If there is one concern, I believe the drop back in trip to the 1200m could count against her – and it’s never easy taking on the boys.”

ninth race: Cirillo“This is the golden race of the day – every one of the runners is a major talent in their own right. Cirillo has proven he is top-class, but does he stay 1800m? This will be his acid test – but he is fit and well and has a big heart.”

Eleventh race: Social Order“Social Order is a course and distance winner and really impressed me last time. he is fit and well and I expect him to be in the mix.”

SIRE OF 5 EUROPEAN G1 WINNERSSire of 61 International stakes horses

Sire of winners of over 1000 races in 33 countries

Sire of R320 million in earnings to date

The 42nd stakes winner sired by Duke Of Marma-lade in total - he is the sire of 70 black type performers in total thus far - Nastergal is the fifth individual South African graded stakes win-ner by Duke Of Marmalade, with this tally including Aus-sie bred Gr3 Tommy Hot-spur Handicap winning sire, Moofeed, and the likes of Santa Clara, Seville Orange, and Temple Grafin. Encouragingly perhaps, each is out of a mare by a differ-ent broodmare sire, with Moofeed out of a mare by Encosta De Lago, Temple Grafin out of a Greys Inn daughter, Santa Clara being produced by a Lomitas mare, Seville Orange out of a Galileo mare and Nastergal out of the Black Minnaloushe mare, Royale Noir. Duke Of Marmalade’s first Sa crop also includes black type winners out of daughters of Spectrum and arch, in Duchess Of Bourbon (Winter Oaks) and Princess Irene (Jamaica handicap) respectively.Duke Of Marmalade’s first local crop consists of 62 runners, of which 31 are winners, and six are stakes winners - or just under 10% of his first South african to race are black type winners.

Bright FutureWith some good sized and well-bred crops yet to reach the local tracks, this total looks sure to grow substantially over the coming seasons. Duke Of Marmalade’s 2yo’s include 17 runners who have won or been placed, including three black type performers.Moofeed, Nastergal and Temple Grafin have won graded races at 1000m and 1200m, suggesting Duke Of Marmalade is not just a source of classic performers (Santa Clara also ran second in the Kenilworth Fillies Nursery over 1200m), while Duke Of Marma-lade’s second crop include the very smart looking True To Life, who was third in the Gr2 Sa Fillies Nursery over 1160m. This an intriguing achievement by a horse whose better known progeny included much-loved stayer, Big Orange, and Cartier Champion, and Gr1 Ladbrokes St Leger winner, Simple Verse. Big Orange scored his signature win in the Gr1 Gold Cup (over 4014m), while Simple Verse landed her British classic victory over 2921m. Their sire, also responsible for Melbourne Cup runner up, Marmelo, is clearly a versatile one, and one whose results suggest he can yet sire his share of speedy performers.Duke Of Marmalade’s high-class performers, Simple Verse, Nutan,

Traffic Jam, and Marmelo are, however, all out of mares sired by stallions best known as classic influ-ences rather than speed.Duke Of Marmalade’s international record suggests - not surprisingly given that he is by Danehill and a half-brother to an Epsom Derby winner by Galileo - that he would do well with mares by Sadler’s Wells and Galileo. Galileo is already damsire of Duke Of Marmalade’s group/graded stakes winning daughters, Venus De Milo - 2nd Gr1

yorkshire and Gr1 Irish Oaks - and the aforementioned, Seville Orange.an interesting aspect of Duke Of Marmalade is that a number of his family have stood at stud in South africa, including the likes of al Mufti (Roberto), Sportsworld (alleged) and Mambo In Seattle (Kingmambo). This suggests that he should be suited to a number of their daughters/granddaughters, with al Mufti and his cham-pion sire son, Captain al (both damsire of high-class performers sired by Mambo In Seattle) seeming particularly appealing.

World RulersOther notable relatives of Duke Of Marmalade include legend-ary sire, a.P. Indy, represented in South africa by a number of sire sons, including Judpot and Camden Park, and out of a mare whose influence continues to grow. his dam, Love Me True - a sis-ter in blood to top class uS sire and champion, Lemon Drop Kid - is also dam of 2013 Gr1 Investec Derby winner, Ruler Of The World (Galileo), who has already made an impression with his first crop. The flashy Ruler Of The World’s first crop, now three, includes high-class filly, Iridessa, winner of the recent Gr1 Juddmonte Pret-ty Polly Stakes, as well as last season’s Gr1 bet365 Fillies Mile. Interestingly, Iridessa is out of a mare by Danehill, the sire of Duke Of Marmalade. Love Me True is also granddam of the useful Deep Impact sired 3yo filly, Love So Deep, who ran third in this season’s Listed height Of Fashion Stakes, with Love So Deep having also finished fifth to subsequent Gr1 Kerrygold Irish Oaks winner, Star Catcher, (Sea The Stars) in the Gr2 Ribblesdale Stakes. One of the best performed horses ever to come to stud in South africa, Duke Of Marmalade, who won five Gr1 races in succession in 2008, was given a Timeform Rating of 132 at the end of his career in 2008, making him one of the highest rated sons of his mighty sire Danehill.

Worth A Chance!Sean Tarry has always been high on Jet Master’s gifted racing son, lance. He should know. He’s trained several of the family, including his Gr1-winning brother liege, yet lance was always his pick of the tribe, writes Mick Goss. When Lance stripped the sheen off Louis The King’s burgeoning reputation in the Secretariat Stakes, Tarry was quick to proclaim him a Gr1 horse in waiting. While nobody knew then that Louis The King would go on within a couple of months to become a Triple Crown hero, it was some statement about Lance’s perfor-mance that day.We all know the thin red line that divides ecstasy and agony in the racing game, and our champion trainer has ever since lamented the early termination of Lance’s career, more so now that we know how good Jet Master’s other sons, Master Of My Fate and Pomo-doro have turned out. Not to mention the same ownership’s Skitt Skizzle, who’s been something of a hit himself with five impressive winners from just six foals in his first crop. I guess that ends the conjecture as to whether Jet Master will make a sire of sires; the evidence is written big in racing’s folklore. We had the pleasure of hosting Chris and Erich van Niekerk this past week, and especially in showing them Lance’s first foals at Summer-hill. Those who know Lance will tell you he’s a horse of immaculate physical proportions, beautifully balanced, athletic, clean legged and a fluid, panther-like mover. his foals are like peas-in-a-pod, sol-idly built, grand movers on perfect limbs with big engines, and like their father, deep, rich bays. The problem is that by the time he came to stud, he was virtually a “forgotten” horse, after spending a year and a half in injury-in-duced rehabilitation. attracting an appropriate level of support is never easy in these circumstances, and so Chris and Erich have come up with a novel proposal. In order to understand its value, you should take the trouble if possible, to acquaint yourself with his foals; after that, it’s a “no-brainer”. here goes:you pay R5 000, and provided you send a mare in each of this and next season, you own a share in Lance, which obviously entitles you not only to use the horse every season, but to share in any future surplus income netted. For this and the next season, you will have the option of sending two mares in each of those seasons, at no extra cost.as an expression of the irresistibility of the deal, Summerhill is taking up 25% of Lance, reinforced by the arrival of his first foals. It’s hard to imagine too many prospects carrying better creden-tials. See his pedigree page here

Bomber Barend! One of South african racing’s favour-ite ambassador sons, Barend Vorster rode five winners on the eight-race card yesterday at the opening of the new Murray Bridge racecourse outside adelaide in South australia.Vorster moved to australia recently from Singapore where he is the sta-ble jockey for trainer Tony McEvoy.

McEvoy saddled six winners, five with Vorster in the irons. his sixth winner on the day was ridden by Raquel Clark.

Test Of TimeTrainer Tobie Spies has a host of se-rious contenders on Super Saturday and will be a man to watch in the Gr1 Thekwini Stakes where he sad-dles a strong quartet, including the Golden Slipper top two of Cockney Pride and What you are. he has been involved in the industry for over 40 years in various capacities and

saddled his first winner – a grey filly called Mantilla that was a present from the Goodman family – in the 70’s. Tobie grew up with horses on his father’s farm haasfontein between Bethal and Middelburg in Mphumalanga.

Red HotTrainer Paul Peter and KZN-based jockey Warren Kennedy are the hot-test combination in Gauteng racing and after a six-timer on Thursday 4 July at the Vereeging track, they were amongst the winners again on

Tuesday. Kennedy, who achieved a fourth placing in the July, also rode a third winner on the day - that for Candice Dawson. The Kennedy –

Peter strike rate is a healthy 22% with 33 winners from 153 starters.

Maverick Stuff!Ryan Munger knows the yvette Bremn-er-trained 5yo Maverick Girl well and although he had never won on her previ-ously, the young jockey rode a beautifully judged race from the front.using the back stretch tail-wind and her long-stride, Maverick Girl kept them guessing on her favourite surface as she turned into the short all-weather straight full of running.Staving off every challenge, Maverick Girl kept rolling and had a half length to spare at the line over the ever game 3yo Mad-ame Speaker, who looked menacing down the inside after a rest and was bidding to give alan Greeff his fourth consecutive success in the end-of-season feature. The winner clocked 95,68 secs for the 1600m.Studio Blues and the well-related Perfect-proportions rounded off a R38 000 quartet dividend, with just 0,65 lengths covering the top four home.Bred by the Fenix family’s Optima Trust, Maverick Girl registered a well-deserved first stakes success and she may well have made it a winning swansong.a daughter of our 2009 Equus Champion Sprinter Rebel King (National Emblem), Maverick Girl is out of the five-time win-ning Classic Flag mare, Seductress – who raced in the same silks.a winner of 7 races with 15 places from her 33 starts, Maverick Girl has banked R580 863.

Gr3 Champagne Stakes (F&M) R250 000

Champagne CelebrationThe disappointment of having to make the tough precautionary call to scratch their australian-bred star Run Fox Run in view of the prevailing going, turned into a cel-ebration for the Ridgemont Racing Team at Kenilworth on Saturday when Nastergal came to the party and scored her first stakes success in style. The withdrawal of two serious contenders in Brett Crawford’s Run Fox Run and the Marshall runner Canukeepitsecret reduced the R250 000 Gr3 Champagne Stakes field to just seven. With a trio of representatives, Candice Bass-Robinson would have fancied her team’s chances of lifting the honours – and enjoying the distinction of saddling the final feature winner of the 2018/19 Cape season. But it was the lesser fancied Nastergal who was to deliver the thrills. With each of the seven runners hard against the steel 100m after the gates were sprung, Ridgemont-highlands sponsored jockey Greg Cheyne’s initiative to, possibly reluctantly, take up the running on Naster-gal was to prove a match-winning move. The prospects of Cheyne’s calculated tactical gamble got brighter as the race went on and after the challenge of the fancied Dynamic Diana folded late, the daughter of Duke Of Marmalade finished her race strongly to hold off various flying challenges and win by 2,25 lengths in a time of 79,64 secs.Ostinato came out of the pack to hold off Crowded house and Too Phat To Fly.The fancied runners were outgunned.Ross and Wayne Kieswetter were on hand to lead the winner in with Craig Carey. It was their second home-bred success of the afternoon after their Dynasty colt york-town impressed when a runaway winner of his maiden earlier on.Bred by Ridgemont, Nastergal is out of the unraced Black Minnaloushe mare, Royale Noir. She is by Drakenstein Stud’s Cartier Champion Duke Of Marmalade and be-came the high-class son o Danehill’s fifth local and 41st individual stakes winner.Nastergal has won 3 races with 7 places from 12 starts for stakes of R335 575.

Course Variant: 2.17s slow (straight) – 2.17s slow (bend)A further 32mm of rain fell on the track during the

week leading up to this meeting and as a result the penetrometer read 30 in the straight and 31 on the

turn. The going then was posted as soft. There was a 2km/h south easterly head wind, and the rail was in its

original position with a 2m spur at the 470m mark.

Gr3 Final Fling Stakes (F&M) R250 000

Class Countsafter days of rain, the winter sun brightly and with the going officially soft, the only doubts around the hottest favourite of the afternoon was her first try at the 1800m.But, as observed by Drakenstein’s Kevin Sommerville, the Silvano progeny mature with age and it was no sweat as Richard Fourie had the stocky bay relaxed at the back of the six horse field as Morne Win-naar tried to make every post a winning one on Glen Kotzen’s Glamorous Life.at the 350m Platinum Class (7-20) was sent for home and she lengthened her stride to come home powerfully and unchallenged down the centre to win going away by 2,50 lengths in a time of 117,75 secs.her stablemate Libra edged the gallant Glamorous Life out of second to make it an exacta for the high-riding Snaith team. The winner looks to make a lovely brood-mare and her first Gr3 success could mark her retirement – although that is not final.Drakenstein’s Kevin Sommerville said that the decision for his boss Gaynor Rupert was a ‘nice problem to have’.Platinum Class has won 7 races with 7 plac-es from 19 starts for stakes of R662 000.a R210 000 National yearling Sale gradu-ate, the winner, who races for Drakenstein Stud, was bred by Mauritzfontein and Wil-gerbosdrift and is a daughter of champion sire Silvano (Lomitas) out of the four-time winner Express Queen (Jet Master).

SPORTING POST DIGEST • ThuRSDay 25 JuLy 2019 26

Domestic Population MR IncreaseOver the past few seasons it has been observed that a general decline in the Merit Ratings of South African domiciled horses was occurring, and that the trend has continued despite the ‘blanket’ six pounds raise to all Merit Ratings which came into effect in March 2018. This is particularly true at the lower end of the spectrum, where some 75% of the horse population are rated 72 and below. The above observations were discussed extensively during the 2019 handicappers Roadshow.

Effects of the Guidelines and Slippage Factor:In large part, the problem of “slippage” in the overall Ratings has been exacerbated by handicapping guidelines which were designed to severely limit increases in horses’ Ratings thereby ‘protecting’ improving horses and which in turn, as a compen-satory measure, resulted in a more vigorous approach towards dropping the Ratings of struggling horses in a bid to equalise the handicapping as much as possible. This practice resulted in 75% of the horse Population being rated below 72 thus causing an extreme imbalance (or congestion) in the National Merit Ratings Pyramid and consequentially to the National Race Programme.

Current Handicapping Philosophy:Since January 2019, the Nha have adopted a more accounta-ble and pure handicapping philosophy by reverting to, where possible, assessing horses on their performance and not on other (often irrelevant) criteria as promulgated by the Guidelines, but the damage had already been done. This current philosophy of handicapping horses more accurately in terms of their actual achievements should ensure that there will not be such a rapid decline in the overall Ratings again in future and, where possible (except where local operators conditions limit the handicappers), a horse’s published or official Merit Rating would reflect the handicappers’ assessments of a horse’s ability.

national Horseracing Population Merit Rating Adjustment:accordingly, it was proposed by the Nha handicapping team, and largely agreed upon at the Roadshows, that another increase in Domestic Merit Ratings be considered in order to balance the Population’s Merit Ratings and the Race Programme as well as alleviate any further degeneration of the Population’s Merit Ratings. This proposal was ratified by the National Board and will come into effect on 1 august 2019. It has been agreed that the Domestic Merit Ratings of all horses domiciled in Gauteng, Kwa-Zulu-Natal and the Western Cape will be increased by 10 pounds.

Eastern Cape:horses domiciled in the Eastern Cape will have their Merit Ratings increased by 5 pounds. This decision was taken in light of the Eastern Cape racing centre being a victim of the ‘creep factor’. an Eastern Cape horse will be defined, for the purposes of the ad-justment, as any horse domiciled and trained in the Eastern Cape that has had two of its last three starts in Eastern Cape.

northern Cape and zimbabwe:The same definition of what constitutes domiciles will be applied to horses based in the Northern Cape and Zimbabwe, but no increase will be implemented in the Merit Ratings of horses in those regions.

Merit Ratings and the Race Programme:This increase will have the desirable effect of uncluttering the lowest divisions as well as helping to boost the higher divisions, where races often attract small fields or fall away altogether due to insufficient entries. horses at the bottom of the Ratings’ spectrum will also find it much easier to get into races than is presently the case, where they are regularly eliminated or have no option but to contest races which are too strong for them. The National Race Programme, as confirmed by the Racing Operators, will be adjusted to accommo-date the impending Merit Rating increase and should ensure a bal-ance between the Merit Ratings and the National Race Programme.

International Merit Ratings:It should be noted that the increase will only affect Domestic Merit Ratings and not the International Ratings of South african trained horses. The International Ratings of South african trained horses are done by the World’s Best Racehorse Ratings Committee.

Handicapping Methodology and Updated Guidelines:a handicapping Methodology Guide as well as the updated hand-icapping Guidelines will be published by the Nha on implementa-tion of the abovementioned National Merit Rating increase.· Press release published by NHA on Monday 22 July 2019

The handicappers felt that the consistent runner-up LIBRa was the correct line horse to use, and so she remains unchanged as well on 89. In rating the race this way, the winner in fact runs to only 94, four pounds below her rat-ing of 98, but PLaTINuM CLaSS did achieve 98 when winning a Listed race three weeks earlier and so remains on that mark.Third placed GLaMOROuS LIFE was raised from 78 to 81 and accordingly would meet fourth placed PEaRL JaM (whom she beat by four pounds here and who remains unchanged on 77) on the correct terms if they were to meet in a handicap. In other changes, MISS KaTaLIN drops from 91 to 88 and CORaL Bay goes from 84 to 81.

Champagne Stakes (Grade 3)NaSTERGaL has seen her rating upped from 88 to 93 after she won the Grade 3 Champagne Stakes for fillies and mares over 1200m at Kenilworth on Saturday. here the handicappers applied some discretion, for in using runner-up OSTINaTO as the line horse NaSTERGaL actually runs to 95. however, the race was run at a crawl in the early stages and NaSTERGaL was enterprisingly ridden to pinch a break at the right time, and it is felt that she is probably flattered by the bare numbers. hence, she was given some leeway.OSTINaTO as the line horse remains unchanged, while third placed CROWDED hOuSE was upped from 77 to 83 (a rating she raced off for much of the early part of the current season.) Fourth placed TOO PhaT TO FLy was dropped from 94 to 91, which is the only other change made to any runners in this race.

Carling Black label Cup Kaizer Chiefs vs Orlando Pirates | Sat 27 July | FNB Stadium | 15:30

The whole country will remain transfixed this Saturday with FnB Stadium being the centre of attention as orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs go head to head in the Carling Black Label Cup. This

fixture may be no more than a glorified pre-season friend-ly, but it has far reaching relevance as it shows fans a taste of what their respective teams have to offer this season. When a match of this magnitude happens after fans have been yearning for club football, we’re guaranteed a showbiz occasion. Let’s take a look at how this sold-out affair is likely to pan out.

To catch up with Benedict Ngwenya previews CliCK HERE

To Win Kaizer Chiefs 2/1 Draw 2/1 Orlando Pirates 13/10

Kaizer Chiefs News coming out of the amakhosi camp is that one of the most-voted players, Itumeleng Khune, won’t feature due to the injury that sidelined him for the better part of last season. This means Bruce Bvuma has to be Kaizer Chiefs’ last line of defence and the Glamour Boys will be hoping the experience he gained from traveling with the Bafana Bafana squad which did national duty at this year’s aFCON pays off. Chiefs fans are also likely to see newly-signed Lazarous Kambole donning the famous gold and black for the first time ever as he is currently the second-most voted striker behind Bernard Parker. I expect Kambole to be the focal point when it comes to offensive play with Parker roaming around. as things stand, amakhosi have no orthodox number six and I expect George Maluleka to do the dirty work in the middle of the park and Siphelele Ntshangase to be the team’s source of creativity.

orlando PiraTesThe mighty Buccaneers have an overly-offensive line up with Ben Motshwari being the only midfielder with defensive capabilities. They have to hope that doubtful Luvuyo Memela doesn’t recover in the nick of time for the game so that Xola Mlambo takes his place to give the team balance in the middle of the park. Milutin Sredojevic’s men have recently visited Cape Town for some pre-season action where they drew 1-1 against Cape Town City and beat newly-promoted Stellenbosch 2-1 with Gabadinho Mhango netting a brace. as things stand, it doesn’t look like Mhango will start as Justin Shonga and augustine Mulenga are leading the voters’ charts by a country mile. The Zambian duo have played in a couple of derbies and they know exactly what to expect in a match of this caliber. PREDiCTiON: orlando Pirates (13/10)

not So Lucky LastHollywoodbets Scottsville 14 July

Very unusually only two of the eight rac-es in Pietermaritzburg on Sunday were run over sprint distances. The not so lucky last, a maiden plate over 1200m was compar-atively the fastest of these, and here the rank outsider of the twelve horse party MaSTER OF FIRE opened his account. Freely available at 70/1 on the off, Michael Roberts’ charge had been unable to get within 8 lengths of a winner in his previous seven starts. he raced clear throughout here and still had two lengths to spare at the wire.

The two 1400m races were both maiden events and in the faster of these the heavily supported SNOW PaLaCE did the business. Soon up handy, the daughter of Potala Palace put her head in front 160m out and cruised clear in the closing stages of the race to score by five.

They also ran two races over 1600m and stopping the clock in the faster time here was GIMME PEaCE when winning the MR64 handicap. Nicely positioned in sixth coming off the bend, the 3yo Gimme-thegreenlight gelding ran on strongly over the final 450m and in a thrilling three way finish he got the verdict by a neck.

Titbits MISS JAGGER was flying at the finish when only failing by the narrowest of margins to collar the favourite Winter Retreat in the maiden plate for the girls over 1950m.

Victory next TimeDurbanville 16 July

Four of the eight races at the country course on Tuesday were run over 1600m and quickest home amongst these was ThE BLuES when getting off the mark in the opening maiden plate. Soon up handy, Paddy Kruyer’s charge put his head in front shortly after passing the 400m marker and comfortably accounted for the odds on favourite JOSEPh JaGGER by two and a half.

The only other distance to stage more than one race was 1000m where the

faster of the two handicaps was the bill topping MR88 affair in which the top weight WhaT a WINNER registered his fifth career victory. another to race close to the speed, Candice Bass-Robinson’s charge ran on strongly at the business end of the race and got the verdict by 0,3 lengths from the luckless aFRICaN VICTO-Ry. The runner up didn’t find the clearest of passages and was flying at the finish.

Race three on the card was a maiden plate over 2400m and here we saw a smart performance from the 3yo son of horse Chestnut WINTER ShaDOW. Guarding the rear as the eight runners swung for home, adam Marcus’ charge ran on best of all in the straight and won going away after striking the front 200m out.

Titbits ELUSIVE RAIN ran on strongly from midfield when getting up in the very last stride to open her account in the girl’s division of the maiden 1600m.

Saving The PuntersHollywoodbets Greyville 17 July

They raced on the poly track on Wednesday where victory in the fastest of the three 1400m races, a MR72 hand-icap, went to the progressive 4yo BORN TO PERFORM. Not the quickest into stride when the gates opened, the son of Silva-no, raced in midfield early on. he began to take closer order coming off the bend and in what proved to be a real thriller, he got the better of the 4yo TOLTEC (led 200m) close home. Born To Perform has now won three from five.

The MR72 handicap was the faster of the two 1000m events and in a race where less than a length separated the first six home the Global One mare ZaDO-Ra gained her sixth win. Freely available at 18/1 on the off Greg antony’s charge raced eighth of the eleven early on. She ran on stoutly in the straight and under a well-judged ride she got up very late.

The afternoon’s feature event was a MR90 handicap over 1600m and here we saw a gutsy performance from the 3yo

Gallant Front RunnerFairview 19 July

This meeting was originally scheduled to take place on the turf. Favourite backers got off to a nice start in Port Elizabeth on Friday when COaTaL STORM did the business in the opening maiden plate over 1000m.Initially scheduled as a work riders race, this event then had to take place with professional jockeys as it was now being run around the turn. Lyle hewitson got the ride on Coastal Storm and soon in touch with the leaders, the partnership were always poised to strike. They did so early in the straight and went on to score very comfortably by a length.

The listed East Cape Paddock Stakes topped the bill and in what not surpris-ingly proved to be the fastest of the three 1600m races MaVERICK GIRL caused a bit of an upset. Soon in her favourite position at the head of affairs, the Rebel King mare answered every call in the short home straight and held on from a wall of horses by a half. Positioned in the backend of midfield turning for home, third placed STuDIO BLuES was flying at the finish and did well to get within 0,6 lengths of the winner.

a MR76 handicap over 1000m brought proceedings to a close and here we saw a very comfortable victory for the yvette Bremner trained LE GRaND ROuGE. always handy, the Western Winter gelding

TRIPLE FaTE LINE. Installed as the favour-ite after the late scratching of SILVa’S BuLLET, the son of Master Of My Fate led a very tightly bunched field throughout. he found extra when the pack tried to mount a challenge in the straight and nev-er looking like being caught, he won well by three quarters.

Titbits At the back easily 8 lengths adrift when the ten runners came off the bend in the maiden plate over 1400m, KNIGHT WARRIOR cut through the field like a knife in the straight and after strik-ing the front 130m from home won going away by three and a quarter.

Blazing A TrailVaal 18 July

Trainer Paul Peter continued his ex-cellent run of form on Thursday with another three winners. amongst these was FLORIDa QuayS when winning the faster of the two 1500m events, a MR74 handicap. Now a winner of four from thirteen, the top weighted daughter of Jay Peg led throughout. She ran on strongly over the final 400m and with the rest well beaten she won by a half from the second favourite PINK.

The two 1600m events were both maiden plates and in the faster of these (the girl’s division) ChaRMZ LuCK got off the mark. Freely available at 15/2 on the off Candice Dawson’s charge was always in touch with the leaders. The veteran of some 28 starts in the maiden ranks SEa LIKE GLaSS got first run and it was only close home that Charmz Luck managed to get the upper hand.

They also ran two races over 1200m. The MR66 handicap was the fastest of these and here victory went to the 4yo MOGGIE BROWN. Easy to back at 22/1 on the off, the daughter of Sail From Seattle

took up the running 400m out and went on to score with authority by a length and three quarters.

Titbits Now a winner of two from thirty two after landing the MR66 Handicap over 1600m here, OKAVANGO DELTA had to wait over 2 years for this second success.
