The word “auction” is derived from the Latin auge which means “I increase” or “I augment”. Auctions have a long
history, having been recorded as early as 500 B.C. According to Herodotus, in Babylon auctions of women for marriage

Joff van Reenen Joff van Reenen is a Director and Lead Auctioneer of the High
St Auction Co. He is arguably South Africa’s most experienced,
competent and entertaining auctioneer and an expert in the field
of property auctions. He is in demand internationally conducting
auctions, by invitation, in Hong Kong, Dubai, England and USA.
He is a specialist in auction techniques and strategies and has
been a member of the NAA (National Auctioneers Association of
America) for the past 7 years. He is also the first non-American
to obtain the CAI (Certified Auctioneers Institute) and AARE
(Accredited Auctioneer Real Estate) designation degrees and is the
first in South Africa to hold such titles. His dynamic style has made
