It was just over a year ago when WE’s Andrew Morrison reviewed Vancouver’s fi rst true Neapolitan pizza joint, Gastown’s Nicli Antica Pizzeria, and proclaimed it “the best pizza in Vancouver.” Since then, we’ve been in the midst of a veritable pizza renaissance, with at least a handful of similar restaurants opening up shop. Thankfully, Vancouver’s appetite for chewy, thin-crust pizza doesn’t appear to be waning—and neither does the charge that Nicli (named after the owner Bill McCaig’s Italian mother) is still the best pizza in town. WE named it one of the top ten restaurants in 2011 and the 40-seat restaurant is almost always full, leading us to believe that Vancouverite’s agree.

The pizza is baked in a scorching hot wood-fi red oven (that’s been imported from Naples and made using stone from Mt. Vesuvius) for a mere 90 seconds, giving it an airy, crunchy crust with a bit of char. Ingredients are simple, bright, and as local as possible.

The word on the street is that the McCaig’s new venture, a high-quality Italian eatery and market, Vicino Pastaria and Deli, is set to open in a couple of months. Right next door to Nicli on East Cordova (certainly a market- and food-store starved neighbourhood), the joint will feature homemade casual pasta and deli fare, specialty sig-nature items and sauces, and long-table seating—all presented with the same authenticity the crew brought to their fi rst endeavor, of course. Editor’s Note: This is a repeat of Andrew Morrison’s predictions of restaurant trends for 2012.

Predicting the future of our local food scene isn’t that much of a trick if you view the coming year through the prism of the last. When we do so, we’re reminded of how

turning a page on our calendars doesn’t necessar-ily mean we have to exile the trends that currently have us fi xated.

If I had to make any prediction for the year ahead, it’s that we’ll remain in the same holding pattern that we’ve been in for the last year, treading water not unhappily, but treading water nonetheless. The uncertainty in world markets, the over-saturation of our dining landscape, and the still stupid rules regarding the distribution and sale of alcohol (not to mention the heavy tax burden facing restaurants) have all combined to put innovation and the deli-ciously unfamiliar too deeply into the realm of risk for many restaurateurs to give it the old college try.

Such is life. But does that mean we’ll see more street food, more pizza, and a maintained focus on affordable, casual dining? Though none of that is a bad thing, I’m afraid so.

To wit, Terry Deane’s long-anticipated Pizzeria Barbarella is opening at 654 East Broadway (just west of Fraser), and there are at least two other unrelated pizza joints that are currently in the process of securing their locations. By this time next year, we should have over a dozen fi rst-rate pizzerias, which is up from pretty much zero just a few years ago. That number doesn’t include the many restaurants that have one or two pies on their menus as auxil-iary enticements. The bar menu at Hawksworth, for example, has a lovely pizza ‘alla amatriciana’ on offer,

and the black truffl e pizza at Market in the Shangri La is a thing of happy fevered dreams. Good pizza, it seems, is here to stay, and there was much rejoicing.

For street food, the bigwigs at City Hall are already putting together their new committee to decide the next crop of vendors, so I’m pretty confi dent that we can expect a spring and summer full of new and exciting sidewalk eats. What do you want to see? I’d love at least one newcomer to serve up ramen in the style of Kintaro; another doing nothing but gyozas; another layering peameal bacon sandwiches (a la Toronto’s Kensington Market); another cramming Chinese steam buns with all manner of meats and sweets; another concentrating solely on deep fried arancini; another dedicated to veal and chicken schnitzels; and... what time is it? I blacked out there for a sec. You get the idea. Street food is not a trend. It’s like show that’s too smart for TV but — miracu-lously — keeps getting picked up by the network.

As far as restaurant openings are concerned, we can — as we did in 2011 — expect dozens upon doz-ens. I’ll wager a meal in each that the overwhelm-ing majority will be decidedly casual. That isn’t to say that we’re done with fi ne dining. Far from it. Vancouver is a uniquely casual market, one that is almost wholly bereft of the “expense account” culture that exists in other big cities.

Predictably, all of the restaurant projects that are currently generating buzz are aiming for as broad a clientele as they can manage, and that includes the suits. Witness the coming of James Iranzad and Josh Pape’s Wildebeest, due at 120 West Hastings. Their eccentric wine bar is ostensibly geared toward foodies and restaurants industry types — but that’s a wide net in these parts, and the chef — David Gunawan — will likely draw in the well-heeled that he impressed during his tenure at South Granville’s award-winning West.

Similarly positioned is Mark Taylor’s Siena, at 1485 West 12th. Though famed for his more formal Cru on West Broadway (winner of not a few acco-

lades), his new estab-lishment aims for the everyman with simple, inexpensive Mediter-ranean fare. Likewise L’Offi cio, brand new to 3687 W. 4th. The owners of the critically acclaimed (and white table clothed) La Quercia are primed to open this tiny, evenings-only wine bar right next door for those who looking for a quick Italian nibble and glass without a reserva-tion. There’s also the new Cactus Club which is slated to open in time for the spring rush on English Bay. And if we’re really lucky, Vikram Vij of Rangoli and Vij’s will give us something new to sink our teeth into on Cambie.

BEST VINTAGE CLOTHING STORE: FRONT & COMPANY

While there are plenty of fabulous consignment shops on Main Street, none of them have window displays quite like Front and Company, this year’s winner for Best Vintage Clothing Store. Lush and theatrical, the windows are designed twice a year by creative director Sonia Capriceru and implemented collectively by the staff. It’s high-fashion details like these that put the store (a mix of vintage consignment and new clothing and acces-sories, as well as an eclectic gift shop next door) in a league of its own. After a fi re three years ago, the 18-year-old store expanded and renovated, attracting a wider following with its brand new look. “It revamped everyone’s perception of what Front and Company was really about,” says store manager Dan Carlos. “[People saw that] yes, we really were a fashion-forward store and that we were going to covet Main Street as a more fashion-centered area.”

The store is incredibly selective with the vintage items it consigns from its pool of more than 5,000 consigners. “The selection process is pretty thorough,” explains Carlos. “We pick gems. Instead of taking whatever comes in, we are really thorough, making sure that everything we are taking in is high-quality, fashion-forward, and a one-of-a-kind piece.”

People looking to consign with Front and Co. are encouraged to check out their website, where they post detailed guidelines for what their clientele is after this season. For the spring, expect to see lots of pattern, bright colours, fl oral and muted feather prints, says Carlos. (3712 Main, 604-879-8431, FrontAndCompany.ca) — Anna Killen

HEALTH & FITNESS

BEST NATUROPATHIC RETAILER: FINLANDIAOver the past 35 years, Finlandia Pharmacy and Health Centre has grown to be the one of the largest and most respected natural health care centres in Canada. But as a repeat winner in our annual Best Of poll— last year it took home fi rst place in the Best Naturopathic Retailer category and second in the Best Specialty Health Store category—it’s clear that they’ve still found a way to retain that local touch.

The easy-to-spot green and white storefront on West Broadway is home to scores of hard-to-fi nd homeopathic remedies, an herbal dispensary, beauty products, a traditional, full-service pharmacy and a hearty health-focused book section. But it’s also made a name for itself as a forward-thinking health technology centre (think bone density testing, brain state conditioning, and infrared light therapy—great for the winter blues) with an expert staff of physicians, pharmacists, counsellors, and non-traditional healers.

Founder and owner Harlan Lahti, a former resident pharmacist at Vancouver General Hospital, along with his wife, Beth, ensure Finlandia is a unique blend of European and Western approaches to medicine, and a touchstone in the community—hosting in-store seminars and open houses for those wishing to become more informed about new heath-care techniques and trends and fi nd information about living a healthier, natural life. BEST BIKE SHOP: OUR COMMUNITY BIKES

The fi rst visit to Main Street’s Our Community Bikes, this year’s winner for Best Bike Shop, can feel a bit intimi-dating. The space, one part retail, three parts repair shop (you can fi x your bike yourself, or drop it off and have it fi xed for you), is nothing if not chaotic—packed to the brim with people, spare parts, and smart staff members doing their best to help the masses and be in four places at once.

But conquering the chaos and learning how to fi x your own bike, with your own hands, is all part of the experi-ence, says veteran staff member Jesse Cooper. “Ignore the chaos and focus on your own space,” says Cooper. Be patient, and ask for help. Over the years, he believes the staff at OCB has become more approachable and more accepting, leading to a wider clientele.

Founded in 1993 as a project of Better Environmentally Sound Transportation, the OCB collective broke away in 1999 and became part of PEDAL, Pedal Energy Development Alternatives, an umbrella organization for a variety of bike related projects.

While OCB is their most well-known project, the group has a variety of endeavors on the go, notably their youth-centric programs After School Bikes and Our Community Bike Club, a summer camp for kids. More than just a bike shop, OCB is a social enterprise. “It’s about empowerment through education. We would like people to be more self-suffi cient, grow their own food, fi x their own car, fi x their own bike,” says Cooper. “When we’re able to take a bike that would otherwise be destined for the landfi ll and re-circulate it back into transportation safely and effectively, then you know you’ve done a job well.” (3283 Main, 604-879-2453) — Anna Killen

BEST PRIVATE ART GALLERY: DOUGLAS REYNOLDS GALLERY

Ask Douglas Reynolds, owner of the Douglas Reynolds Gallery on South Granville, what he has planned for his Saturday night, and one gets a peek at what it’s like to be a member of Vancouver’s fi ne art society. First stop, the Vancouver Art Gallery’s 2012 auction, where Reynolds’ has donated a $30,000 carving. Then, it’s off to the Cuban ballet at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre (Reynolds is one of the corporate sponsors), followed by drinks with the Cuban dancers and crew.

Over the past 16 years, Reynolds’ gallery has evolved to become the go-to gallery for the upper echelon of Northwest Coast artists. “When I opened it was much more mid-range,” says Reynolds. “Now it’s much higher end. But we’ve always been a gallery that supports new and upcoming artists.”

Celebrated Haida artist Robert Davidson has a close relationship with the gallery—working on public and large private commissions for people all over the world. “We did a series of fi ve totem poles about fi ve years ago for British artist Damien Hirst,” says Reynolds.

These commissions have become a major part of the business—but Reynolds recognizes that it is his storefront on South Granville (and his Vancouver-based charity work) that keeps him connected to the local community.
