As a leading provider of software applications for global manufacturing companies, QAD offers innovative products and services to manufacturers in the automotive, consumer products, electronics, food & beverage, industrial, and life science sectors. Innovation marks QAD’s corporate culture as well, with its modern oceanfront headquarters perched on a bluff above Summerland, California, and a compelling array of benefits tailored to the lifestyles and personal needs of its employees.

Thus it’s no surprise that QAD took an acute interest in the BioIQ health screening program as a convenient and compelling way for employees to access the diagnostic care they need.

“Our biggest asset is our workforce,” says Murray Ray, Executive Vice President and Chief People Officer at QAD. “Attracting and retaining talent is critical if we are to remain successful. BioIQ is one of the health care benefits that positions us as a caring employer.”

BioIQ offers several methods for gathering biometric data from employees and dependents: through At-Home test kits, at On-Site screening events, via local Lab Visits, and through Physician Results Forms that are obtained during regular doctor visits. Regardless of which method people choose, they enjoy a cohesive interface for ordering tests, scheduling appointments, receiving reminders, and viewing results, with intuitive graphs to monitor year-over-year trends. BioIQ’s unique technology platform coordinates these various screening methods, uploads the results to personal health records,

and integrates the data with other wellness initiatives and health plans. Optionally, participants can call a health coach if they need help understanding their lab results or want wellness advice about what to do next.

QAD offered the At-Home option to a select group of employees on a voluntary basis. These employees were given the chance to order a test that measures their risk for diabetes and heart disease. One hundred percent of employees who expressed an interest followed through by creating accounts on BioIQ.com and ordering the home test kits.

The participants received their At-Home test kits, then followed BioIQ’s instructions to take a small blood sample and mail it to a certified laboratory for processing. A few days later, their test results were presented through BioIQ’s secure and informative website.

“The At-Home kit arrived really quickly,” said one of the members of the pilot. “It took less than five minutes to complete the test.”

Most of the participants also completed BioIQ’s online Health Risk Assessment, which placed their test results in an actionable context. Based on their results, they obtained practical advice on a wide range of health topics, including prevention, risk factors, and lifestyle changes to encourage good health.

“BioIQ offers a confidential and personal at-home method of identifying medical issues above and beyond our traditional medical plans. So many of our employees travel, and BioIQ offers a convenient alternative to visiting the doctor.” - Carol McGee, Senior Benefits Analyst

To culminate the pilot program, BioIQ generated a report summarizing the overall results. This aggregate report, which contains no personal data, helped the HR department plan for a more extensive wellness initiative in the second year that involved offering BioIQ health screening services to the rest of its employee population—more than 600 people in 38 states. BioIQ screens for diabetes and heart disease in one simple test. The At-Home test kit includes a complete cholesterol/lipid panel and a choice of either A1c or Fasting Blood Glucose.

QAD was motivated to extend BioIQ companywide based on the success of the pilot. Ninety percent of the employees who initially expressed interest completed the online health risk assessment, and 80 percent completed the A1c test. These results, which are typical for BioIQ programs, are much higher than industry averages for corporate health screening programs, which typically have about a 20 percent success rate (measured by the ratio of the number of people who express interest in health screening to the number who follow through to program completion.)

While Ray is well versed in these health statistics, his primary motivation is to improve the employee value proposition. Each year he works with his HR team to review all of the company benefits, from improving 401(k) offerings to selecting competitive health care plans. “BioIQ is the perfect addition to our health care benefits,” he explains. “It lets us turn a very negative thing – the rising cost of health care benefits – into something very positive: a way to differentiate ourselves from other companies and improve our employee value proposition.”

Mr. Ray also knows that helping employees stay healthy will reduce medical claims. He believes BioIQ’s emphasis on prevention, early detection, and personal responsibility fits well with QAD’s desire to maintain an active, healthy workforce.

Meanwhile, the HR professionals on Ray’s team enjoy the turn-key nature of the BioIQ program: they send one introductory message to employees and BioIQ handles the rest: signing up participants, delivering test kits, presenting private lab results, spearheading all communications, and generating aggregate reports for management.

The automated, turn-key nature of the program is one of the reasons QAD has offered the screening service to employees for three consecutive years. Repeat participants enjoy seeing biometric trends in their personal health dashboards, with lab results presented year-over-year in dynamically updated charts and graphs.

“In QAD’s active, fast-paced work environment, we are pleased to provide such an easy and effective health testing program for our employees and their families,” says QAD Senior Benefits Analyst Carol McGee. “BioIQ offers a confidential and personal at-home method of identifying medical issues above and beyond our traditional medical plans. So many of our employees travel, and BioIQ offers a convenient alternative to visiting the doctor.”
