Vadoo Care for Nature Project
in commemoration of World Environment Day and World Ocean Day, the Green Team of Adaaran Prestige Vadoo organised special activities on 5 June, and 8 June respectively.

World Tourism Day
Innovative recycled project
In commemorating World Environment Day under the theme of ‘Sustainable
tourism: a tool for development’, the team at Vadoo conducted a unique project
creating awareness on recycling and eco-consciousness by designing novel costumes
using recycled produce. These costumes were then worn by staff volunteers who
paraded the Resort to the beat of local drums, whilst Heads of Departments and
others explained the importance of managing waster and preserving the beautiful
Maldives. This was well received by all guests.
Reef-cleaning programme 2017
A reef-cleaning drive was conducted on 27 September to clean and save the house reef. The Resort’s guests and team members joined together to clean up the house reef around the island.
Vadoo Reef Care Project
Adaaran Prestige Vadoo runs a strong environmental protection and conservation programme which includes a coral regeneration initiative bringing new corals to life. As part of the programme, broken coral pieces are collected from the reef and harvested by attaching them to metallic coral trays.
The programme was initiated in 2016 under the guidance of the dive centre staff. Under the project, coral have been placed onto three metallic coral trays as at now, which is expected to increase to seven by 2019.

A beach cleaning program was conducted on 8 June 2017 with the participation of guests and staff.
Energy Management - Energy-saving measure
Waste Management
Waste is separated at the source, recycled and sent to a waste recycling centre for appropriate disposal.
1. All rooms operate on an energy-saving system with the key card activating the electricity and air conditioning.
2. Efficient lighting has been implemented in the garden and a programme is presently underway to replace all lightbulbs with energy-efficient LED lamps in all rooms and public areas.
3. Newly installed timers for outside lights in staff room new building. 4. Photocell system for all water villa outside lights. 5. Newly installed inverter type AC to all guest rooms. 6. Considering energy-efficiency equipment at point of purchase of any electrical
equipment. 7. 20w CFL bulbs were replaced with 10w LEDs in all guest rooms’ glass bottoms and room
bottoms. 8. Avoiding laundry operation during peak hours and after 02:00 when it is possible. 9. Displayed loading capacity of each machine at laundry. 10. Information provided to guests in order to save water/energy
1. The Resort has its own water treatment plant, from which treated sewage water is used for garden irrigation.
2. Garden irrigation takes place during the cooler morning and evening hours. 3. Information displayed in guest rooms encourage the reuse of towels and linen. 4. None of the laundry machines will run without minimum capacity. 5. Reuse of appropriately treated grey water for gardening. 6. Maintaining water flow rates within the targeted range. 7. Information provided to guests in order to save water.
Water Management - Water-saving measures
Compost Project
Composting, known as the natures’ way of recycling has been adopted by the Resort in turning organic waste, such as food waste and garden waste to biodegradable fertilizer. The composting program at the Resort kicked started in mid 2017 which initially produced 100 kg per month.
Christmas décor with environmentally friendly items and leftovers
The Resort joined in the Aitken Spence Hotels overall approach of ‘celebrating with a conscious’ by adopting a sustainable Christmas season. Décor were designed and created by the in-house team using recycled material. Join effort by the team, this initiative brought out the true meaning of the season – of familial bonding and joint happiness for the common good; which in this case, was protecting mother earth.
Community engagement
The Resort’s commitment goes beyond environmental sustainability, and includes social sustainability as a key component of the overarching sustainability efforts. Throughout the year, the Resort participate in a range of social activities as noted below
• The largest local community empowerment is through employment. Over 45 % of the Resort staff are locals and all have the opportunity to work their way up the career ladder.
• In purchasing produce for the kitchen, the Resort gives weight to purchasing locally. Local markets are scouted regularly and suppliers have been identified through whom, a large part of the produce is met.
• Local food and beverages are promoted in the restaurants. • The biggest local management training programme ’Adaaran Kurimagu Management Trainee Programme‘ for
local students was conducted, training 10 potential professionals. • Island-hopping excursions promotes guest engagement with the local community. • Local student empowerment programmes are conducted on a need basis, working closely with local schools and
colleges.
Care for people (Corporate Social Responsibility [CSR] Project)
As part of the Adaaran Prestige Vadoo CSR initiative, the staff organised a blood donation campaign in collaboration with the Maldives Blood Bank on 25 November 2017 to celebrate the ’Travelife Giving Month‘
This was the second blood donation campaign organised by the Vadoo team and 40 units of blood were collected.
In addition to that, the resort’s football team donated 7,500 MYR
(JVM Boli Cup Runners-Up Cash Prize) to the “Thalassemia Fund”.
Learning and Career Development
The Resort is committed to creating an environment for staff to achieve their career aspirations while nurturing a team of competent and motivated professionals. In recognition of our sustainability initiatives, the resort was awarded with the prestigious Travelife Gold Certification in 2016, which has been maintained in the fiscal year under consideration.
