H elpful H oliday T ipsSenior Sergeant Kevin RayMontgomery County Sheriff’s Office

As Christmas and New Year’s approach, your local Sheriff’s Office offers some helpful tips for a safe holiday season. We also wish to stress the importance of doing your part to protect yourself by not presenting opportunities for criminals to ruin your holiday.

Wherever possible, additional officers will be on high-visibility patrol around shopping areas, banks, and the like. They will also be available to provide escorts when requested.

A particular problem this time of year is theft from automobiles and residential burglaries. These are the most preventable crimes. If citizens remove the opportunity, the crime is less likely to occur, and some types cannot occur at all.

At Home:

• Make sure to keep doors and windows locked.• Turn on outside lights at night.• Report persons or vehicles roaming your

neighborhood, day or night, so police may check them. They may be simply looking at Christmas lights, or they may be “casing” houses to burglarize.

• Place your tree where the gifts will be less visible from outside. Thieves like window-shopping through your windows.

• After Christmas, don’t put the empty boxes out on the curb. This makes it easy for burglars to decide which houses to burglarize (e.g., new computers, TVs, electronics, video games). Break down boxes and put them in the trash, making sure to save all paperwork. Also, remember many electronic devices require original boxes for warranty repair.

• Immediately make an inventory listing the model and serial numbers of new items (and old ones if you haven’t already) and engrave personal markings on them.

If Leaving Home (On a trip or just for a little while):

• Make it look like you are still there.• If you have an alarm system – use it!• Timers on exterior lights, interior lights, and TVs will

help make it look like you are home. Don’t leave an answering machine message saying you are gone; in fact, turning it off would be better. If you have the call forwarding option on your phone, use that.

4 January 2015 Lake Windcrest

• Double check locks on all doors and windows, including second floors and garages. The doors should have dead-bolts; key locks for windows are also available.

• Have a trusted neighbor pick up mail, papers, and ads, put out your trash can, and park in your driveway. Give them emergency and cell numbers to reach you.

• Call the Sheriff’s Office to request a periodic residence check (Vacation Watch) while you are away.

• When you return, look around outside first. If you see any evidence of a break-in, do not go inside. Go to a neighbor’s house and call police. The burglars could still be inside.

• Have packages delivered to a location that can accept it right then. Packages on doorsteps are easy targets and often disappear.

While Shopping or Going Out:

• Secure valuables out of sight in your trunk, but be aware that many cars now have fold-down seats or a remote trunk release inside the car. These conveniences make your trunk vulnerable to thieves willing to break a window.

• If you are at a mall or a shopping center, periodically go to the car and lock away purchases so they will not “disappear” when you put them down trying on clothes or at the food court.

• Safeguard your purse, wallet, bank cards, and personal information. Identity thieves thrive in this environment.

• Keep close tabs on your children while shopping. With so many people, it is easy for them to become lost.

• Make sure they know their full name, your full name, address, phone, and your cell or pager number to reach you if you get separated.

• Insist children hold your hand in parking lots. Drivers won’t see them if they run ahead or behind you.

• Be aware of your surroundings going to your car, going into and out of your house, and while at the ATM.

Don’t Drink and Drive

Please have fun with friends and family, but we want you and yours to make it home safely. Have a designated driver or hire a car service. At the end of the day, the money spent will be worth it.

VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH

The Volunteer of the Month for December 2014 is Gerald Hearn. Gerald has worked tirelessly since June assisting in the transition and setup of the LWPOA financial accounts and statements. He worked closely with Treasurer Michele Goldman and Karen Sanchez, PMGH Accounting Representative. We are very fortunate to have someone with Gerald’s knowledge and experience contributing his time on our behalf. He served on the Board as Treasurer for three years and is now the chairperson for the Finance Committee.

Volunteers Make it HappenYour neighbors serving on Association Committees or

the Board provide the much needed manpower to maintain the community as well as to accomplish plans for the future. Those who serve save the Association thousands of dollars each year due to the expertise and guidance they provide. Serve a little, serve a lot — there are a wide variety of skilled and accomplished individuals living in our community, and many of those skills can be matched to a need for assistance. So, if you're interested in helping improve your community or just want to get out and meet neighbors, we would be thrilled to talk to you about the contribution you could make. Contact any member of the Board or call the manager for more information.

Grounds and Amenities Committee

Homeowners are advised that during winter months the landscape contractor scales back to once-a-month ditch mowing. Improvements are under review in Edgewater Park to provide a pathway to the playground as well as tables, benches and trash cans. Shade structures are being evaluated. At the central entrance, the live oaks are to be trimmed and additional plantings and replacements installed.

As directed by the Board, the committee considered the placement of a flag display in the community. The evaluation criteria was to determine if flags add to the aesthetics of the entrances, interfere with driver visibility, present potential liability to the association due to proximity to a major highway, are placed in a manner to safely allow for homeowner participation in commemorative events, and offer an opportunity for homeowners to memorialize veterans and other first responders. The committee concluded that placement of flagpoles at the entrances interferes with the design of the monuments and presents a safety hazard, in addition to being in the ROW versus association property. The committee recommends placement of a flag display in the Boat Launch Area and/or the Edgewater Park. Both areas have parking and space for activities held to memorialize national events. A brick

Architectural Control Committee ACC approval is required prior to making any

improvements. ACC Guidelines and Request Forms are available on the LakeWindcrestPOA.com website Architectural Review tab. There is no deadline for submission. ACC is now online and decisions are made within a 30-day period following submission and/or receipt of all required supporting documentation. Property Owners are notified via email regarding status. Submit to: ARC Department of PMG via email at [email protected] or via mail or delivery to the PMGH Office, ARC Department, 11000 Corporate Centre, Suite 150, Houston, TX 77041. wall or inscribed pavers with the names of veterans within the neighborhood or family members we would like to honor would enhance the overall display along with landscaping and benches. The area would be a focal point upon which to bring the community together. The upcoming community survey will gauge the interest in having a flag display. The Board will then consider the committee’s recommendation.

Flag Giveaway ContestThis month's flag winners are Perry and

Sandy Thomas. They have lived in LW since 1999 and love the neighborhood as much as they love America. When asked what the flag meant to them, Sandy replied, "It's all about our freedom." Perry has come in second a couple of times and finally won. Ironically, this photo was taken on November 22, the 51st anniversary of the JFK assassination. Perry is a huge JFK buff, and is an expert on the day that changed America forever. Coincidently, the question they answered to win the flag was What historical military day in December 1941 changed the world forever? The answer, of course, is the bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7. Please remember, 2,403 Americans were killed and 1,178 others were wounded that day so we can enjoy every day our feet hit the floor. Here's next month's question: Every fold of our American flag has significance. Be the first LW homeowner to tell me what the first fold symbolizes and you will win one of our famous, non-raveling flags, along with a pole and mount. To contact me to win the flag, see my ad in this newsletter.

real estate Market reportAs 2014 winds down, here’s an update on how Lake

Windcrest has performed. As of November 24, 2014, 31 homes have sold this year for an average price of $139.18 per square foot. Eighteen of those homes had a pool, and sold at a premium of $145.31 per square foot. Five others are pending; sale stats are not available yet. All 31 homes were on the market for only 73 days. Additionally, homes in Lake Windcrest bring offers of 98% of their asking price.

Lake Windcrest is a great place to live, especially with the projected growth for Montgomery County. Over a million people are projected to live in the county by 2040. That's only good news for our real estate investment. Houston is adding 100,000 jobs per year. With the influx of Exxon/Mobil employees starting January 1, and other large employers like Anadarko, Southwestern Energy and United/Continental, Lake Windcrest will continue to have a strong real estate market.

Gardening in JanuaryBy: Walt Crowder

Color Plants: Cool temperatures and some occasional rainfall generally reduce the need to water the gardens heavily this month. Monitor the rainfall amounts. The flower beds with annual color plants are the ones that will dry out the fastest. Just remember to water as needed – keep the soil moist.

Don’t forget about the plants in containers. Keep them moist all the way to the bottom of the root ball.

Pest problems are relatively few this month. However, you’d better keep an eye out for aphids if the weather is mild.

Turf: Areas of bare soil will wash away during heavy winter rains. Here’s an idea: Loosen the soil and scatter ryegrass seeds over the area. Ryegrass will stabilize the soil and prevent erosion.

Perennials: Want to see what a perennial will look like in a different location in your landscape? Now would be a good time to move it.

Prune or cut back and remove old, dead upper portions of dormant perennials. “Dead stuff” makes the garden unattractive.

Roses: Late December through early February is the best time to plant new rose bushes or transplant existing roses. To move a bush to a new location, prune it back appropriately, dig up as much of the roots as possible, and plant immediately. Caution: don’t allow the roots to dry out.

Shrubs: Shrubs are as dormant this month as they will get. The weather is generally cool and moist. That makes it an ideal time to transplant.

A few suggestions to think about while transplanting: It is best to not plant immediately after a rain since soil is heavy, difficult to dig, and can become too compacted. Also, it is best to not plant immediately before a hard freeze that dips into the teens.

This is an excellent time to apply horticultural oil spray to shrubs that are prone to scale. These include camellias, hollies, magnolias, euonymus, privets, and cleyera.

Trees: January is an excellent month to plant trees. Deciduous trees are leafless at this time of the year. Their dormancy makes this a great time to get them into the ground.

Happy, Happy New Year 2015!
