Best Wishes to the Members of the Class of 2018

Year 12 students finished formal classes this week, the end of 12 years of primary and secondary education. The occasion was marked today with a breakfast, farewell College assembly and Mass of thanksgiving at St Andrew’s Parish Church. We extend our prayers and best wishes to all Year 12 students who prepare for the final school assessments which commence in the second week of the term break. We wish all students and staff a well-deserved holiday. Students in Years 7-11 return to school on Tuesday, 9th October. The College office will be open from 9.00am-3.00pm during the school holidays. The Office will be closed on Monday, 8th October for staff professional development.

Excellent NAPLAN Results After the successful introduction of NAPLAN online, the results of the Year 7 and 9 NAPLAN have been released. NAPLAN reports will be forwarded to parents in the coming weeks. Whilst we recognise that NAPLAN is only a snapshot of student performance and we place far more emphasis on student learning and achievement in our school courses, it is useful to provide a brief overview of results. The Year 7 results are similar to previous years with Writing significantly above the Australian average and Reading, Grammar and Punctuation, Spelling and Numeracy results are at or almost the Australian average. The Year 9 results are impressive. In comparing the Year 9 results with their 2016 Year 7 performance, there have been significant improvements in all areas. These include:

- It is the first time the College has achieved results above the Australian average in all five areas of the NAPLAN.

- The increase in the percentage of students in the top 20% of students for Australia featuring: o Reading has improved from 13% of students in Year 7 2016 to 18% of students in

Year 9 this year.

o Writing has improved from 20% in Year 7 to 30% in Year 9. o Grammar and Punctuation has improved from 19% in Year 7 to 25% in Year 9. o Numeracy has improved from 13% in Year 7 to 20% in Year 9.

- The significant reduction of the number of students in the lowest 20% of Australian students has improved.

o Reading has reduced to 9% of students in Year 9 from 18% of students in Year 7, 2016.

o Writing has reduced to 7% in Year 9 from 15% in Year 7. o Grammar and Punctuation has reduced to 14% in Year 9 from 21% in Year 7. o Numeracy has reduced to 13% in Year 9 from 26% in Year 7.

- The number of students achieving the Reading, Writing and Numeracy standard for the Year 12 Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) has continued to improve. This year 38% of our Year 9 students attained the standard an all aspects. This compares favourably to 35% attaining the standard last year, 17% in 2016, 29% in 2015 and 21% in 2014.

Students who have not attained the WACE standard will undertake the Online Literacy and Numeracy Assessment (OLNA) from Year 10 to demonstrate reaching the standard. This improvement reflects the continued effort of students to improve their academic performance with the dedication of our teachers to assist the students, with the support of parents and family members at home.

Campus Ministry & Harmony Day Assembly

On Tuesday, 18th September we commenced our Harmony Day celebration with an assembly. Some students spoke in their native tongue wishing us a ‘Happy Harmony Day’. Miss Harrison’s and Mr Bonarrigo’s LOTE classes said the Hail Mary in French and the sign of the cross in Japanese. Since 1999, more than 70,000 Harmony Day events have been held across Australia. Harmony Day is a day to celebrate Australia’s multiculturalism, based on the successful integration of migrants into our community. Australia is one of the most successful multicultural countries in the world and we should celebrate this and work to maintain it. Harmony Day is about inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all Australians, regardless of cultural or linguistic background, united by a set of core Australian values. To celebrate Harmony Day students wore cultural dress or colours representing sporting teams, or countries of origin which made for a very colourful celebration. This culminated in the traditional staff v students soccer match at lunchtime with the students emerging victorious. Brother Ollie and Beppie from Wheelchairs for Kids were invited to speak at the assembly and were presented with a cheque for $2,500 for their wonderful work at the Wheelchairs for Kids program. Pictured above are some of the many students who have assisted at the workshop at Wheelchairs for Kids. Along with the cheque presented to Brother Ollie, students’ gold coin donations on the day raised a further amount of just over $1000.

Irene’s Service Learning Program is a critical part of our Catholic College, helping those less fortunate than ourselves is our duty and privilege. In the words of St Mary McKillop “never see a need without doing something about it.” Our vision is to help our community live meaningful, selfless and spiritual lives and in 2018 this has been what the service program has strived to model and inspire. At our Campus Ministry Assembly, students spoke of some of the main activities and community relationships generated through Irene’s Service Learning Program.

• On Tuesday and Friday mornings students have attended Breakfast Club at Merriwa Primary School, where student and teacher volunteers provide breakfast items to children who would otherwise miss out on a good meal to start the day.

• Another successful event was the City to Surf Fun Run in August. Many students assisted in setting up and looking after the marathon runners.

• A group of students volunteer their time after school on Mondays, attending the Merriwa MercyCare’s Homework Club, assisting primary school students with their homework, reading books and spelling.

• This term, Care Groups generously donated food, toiletries, bedding and clothing items for our Winter Appeal, sent to ShopFront, who assist over 24,000 struggling individuals and families.

• On Tuesday and Thursday mornings, Year 9 students participate in Brighton’s Reading Program, assisting and getting to know young children with their reading development in what is a very enjoyable engagement between our schools.

• The RAAFA Aged Care Home Visits by students involves us sharing time, conversation, games and activities with the residents. Our visits consistently brighten up everyone’s day and it is an incredible privilege to visit the RAAFA residence.

• Students in Year 9 Childcare class have been sewing snuggly baby wraps to donate to The Tiny Sparks Charity, who care for high-risk pregnancies and babies born sick or premature. Tiny Sparks distributes Neonatal Unit care packs to hospitals throughout WA.

Future opportunities to get involved in Irene’s Service activities include:

• Dressed by Vinnies Day - Students will be invited to come to school on the day we launch our 2018 Christmas Appeal, dressed in clothes bought from the St Vinnies Op Shops.

• St Vincent De Paul’s Christmas Hamper Appeal - each Care Group will make a Christmas Hamper to help a family in need at Christmas.

• People Who Care and the College are joining forces - more information will follow on how students can be involved.

• The College is involved in helping set up the Cancer Foundation’s ‘Relay for Life’ on the 21st October.

Irene’s Service Journals are due on the following dates: Year 10 & 11 students 12th October Year 7, 8 & 9 students 2nd November Students who have not completed the hours will return to the College to finish their service hours before Christmas. Students must check the daily notices for information on how to complete service hours. Students can also choose to assist at their own community charities and groups. Year 9 Hunger Banquet Year 9 students participated in a Hunger Banquet during their Social Science classes this week after investigating issues of food security in their studies of Geography. A hunger banquet is about something that we all love – food. Food security to be exact. Can you believe that in 2018, one in nine people still go hungry every day? And it’s not because the world doesn’t produce enough for everyone to eat.

Hunger banquets are a fun, thought-provoking and interactive project for students to learn about:

• The causes of global hunger. • How local actions can have a global impact. • The role we all can play in helping ensure everyone has enough to eat.

Students are given a first-hand experience of the inequalities inherent in our food system; students are divided into groups representing high, middle and low-income regions of the globe and receive a lunch experience they’ll never forget. Our high-income groups received pizza, our middle-income groups received vegetarian wraps and our low-income groups had lettuce and rice. The inequality in how these were distributed in class made the point about food security. Mrs Adele Baker Head of Social Science

Men in Business Excursion

Selected students from Years 9 and 10 were privileged to hear three of Perth’s young, successful businessmen speak about their personal and professional journeys. The common message across the talks given by all four businessmen were that hard work and learning to work with different kinds people, were essential to success in the workplace. Our students were set the challenge of developing a new business idea to support young people through failure. They then pitched their idea to over 100 students and business people from across Perth, with Thomas Berard and John Bone stealing the show with their excellent business plan and engaging presentation. Mr Stuart Whelan Science Teacher

Creations Exhibition: People’s Choice Award Winner Students, parents and staff had to opportunity to vote for their favourite work during last week’s opening night of the Creations Exhibition. Year 12 student, Scott Wickens’ mixed media work Reality was voted the crowd favourite and has earnt him a $30 JB HI-FI Gift Voucher. This work demonstrates stunning detail and tone with pencil, and communicates a concept everybody can relate to - using technology to escape. We congratulate Scott on his fantastic win. Mrs Amy Richardson Head of Visual Arts

ACC Athletics After completing a long season of Athletics training and carnivals, we competed in the ACC Athletics Carnival on Friday, 14th September. Our team consisted of over 100 students representing the College in various track and field events. Team spirit was fantastic throughout the day and by the end of the Carnival our efforts were rewarded as the Senior Boys won their division and shield, and Josh Smith was named Under 16 Boys Age Champion. Thank you to our athletes and staff who attended training sessions and carnivals, as well as the many parents who came along to training as coaches and assisted at the carnivals and took photos during the season. Next year we look to improve our standing amongst the other Colleges and continue to build on our strong team culture.

Rugby Our boys finished the Rugby season with an impressive 49-0 win over Mater Dei College last week. It was a fantastic way to finish what was a relatively short season where they showed significant improvement, week by week.

Our boys were the benchmark of commitment and dedication to their team this year, and we hope next year we can challenge again in the Northern Schools Rugby Tournament. Thank you to the boys and their parents for their continued support and Coach James Trehearn for a great season. Mr Mat Davis Head of Sport

Football West Top 4 Winners Congratulations to Year 7 students Liam Bryden and Trent Scott, and Year 8 student Mason Lyon, who played in the annual Football West Smarter than Smoking Junior League Competition at the weekend.
