President’s MessageSteve Commander | 702.304.1768 | [email protected]

High Holy Days are fast approaching. The information packet was already sent out. It includes information on the four days of Temple services, Book of Remembrance, Break-Fast, Flowers, Yiskor and more. Kindly complete all the appropriate forms and return them as soon as possible. Let’s all celebrate and bring in the new year of 5779 together .

Cantor Jonathan Friedmann has been a tremendous asset to our wonderful Temple over the past several years. Many congregants have talked with me about retaining the Cantor for next year. Based on your recommendations and my conversations with our wonderful Cantor, he has agreed to return next year and continue his marvelous work.

The Jewish Geography event held last month was a tremendous success. Many congregants met members from their prior neighborhoods and reminisced about the good old days. Thanks to all participants and Laura Sussman for her leadership in the event.

Board of Director member Eli Cyngiser informed the BOD about his plans for another Jewish History event in the upcoming months. The past two events were very insightful via the enlightenment of Rabbis Brooks and Shanowitz and attended by numerous congregants. Detail will be available soon.

I am very glad that our Temple has great services twice a month as well as offer YOU, our congregation, many other diversified activities, events and functions for your enjoyment and pleasure.

A chairperson for our 2019 Nominating Committee was named at our June 22nd Temple service. I believe his years with BKB, time as a BOD member and newsletter editor made Sandy Leff the correct person to lead this very important group. It will require his extensive knowledge of our Temple, past history, present status and the foresight to see the future in order to truly benefit BKB. Sandy will develop a first class committee to ensure that BKB will have the right team in place to make 2019 a terrific year. With that said, your assistance is needed in this endeavor. Kindly apply for a specific BOD position you would like to work in to benefit BKB. As stated at Temple services the Board of Directors is our key leadership team. Being on the Board of Directors is an honor and as well as a major responsibility to our entire congregation. It means you are willing and able do what is necessary to accomplish all that is needed for the benefit of our extraordinary Temple. Kindly contact Sandy Leff to apply. His information is: phone 702-804-6870 or [email protected]

A new song book has been designed and is expected to be available shortly for our upcoming Temple services. Thanks for the time and effort put forth in this endeavor by Arlene Goodman, Sandy Leff, Cantor Friedmann. Choir Director Tim Cooper and your President.

Membership dues invoices for July1 - December 31, 2018, were sent to congregants who are current members whose membership will expire on June 30, 2018.They reflect a half year’s dues. Commencing on January 1, 2019, all our members will be on a calendar year for future dues notices

A suggestion was received about having a BKB picnic with all the necessary goodies sometime in early October. Kindly let me know if you would like to assist with this happy event.

We are also looking forward to a glorious Hanukah event in December. It is expected to be at the Suncoast with a vast variety of exciting marvelous surprises for all attendees. Expenditure approval will take place at the next board meeting.

A meeting was held with a qualified individual to discuss the annual BKB audit. The proposed cost for the audit would be $40/hour. The audit is expected to take less than ten hours to complete. The BOD needs to approve the audit and the expenditure.

Most importantly, thank you all for being a member of BKB. YOU are of the upmost importance to our esteemed Temple.

Sincerely,Steve Commander, BKB President

The Star-Spangled Banner | Cantor Dr. Jonathan FriedmannSoldiers at Baltimore’s Fort McHenry raised an American flag to celebrate a crucial victory over British forces during the War of 1812. The sight of those “broad stripes and bright stars” inspired Francis Scott Key to write a poem that eventually became the United States national anthem.

Key gave the poem to his brother-in-law, Judge Joseph H. Nicholson, who noticed that the words fit with a popular melody, “The Anacreontic Song,” attributed to English composer John Stafford Smith. It had been the official song of the Anacreontic Society, an 18th-century drinking club for amateur musicians in London. The song was a tribute to the club’s namesake: the ancient Greek poet Anacreon, who was renowned for his drinking songs and odes to love. Try singing the lyrics to the melody we now know as “The Star-Spangled Banner”:

To Anacreon in Heav’n, where he sat in full Glee,A few Sons of Harmony sent a Petition,

That he their Inspirer and Patron would be;When this answer arriv’d from the Jolly Old Grecian

“Voice, Fiddle, and Flute,no longer be mute,

I’ll lend you my Name and inspire you to boot,And, besides I’ll instruct you, like me, to intwine

The Myrtle of Venus with Bacchus’s Vine.”

The practice of putting new words to an existing melody—known as contrafaction—is common in Jewish life. Hassidic Jews in Eastern Europe believed that God was the author of all melodies, and that each melody had a holy spark that could be returned to its divine source. Every tune was up for grabs for Hassidic devotion: a Cossak dance, a Central European waltz, a folk tune, a klezmer ditty, a Polish military march, a Russian drinking song—you name it. These secular and often non-Jewish tunes could be spiritually redeemed and used for prayerful purposes by being sung as a niggun—either with new religious lyrics or with nonsense syllables, like “ai dai dai.”

A story of this musical transformation involves Shneur Zalman of Lyadi (1745–1813), the first Chabad rebbe, and a street musician. During a stroll one afternoon, the rebbe came across an organ grinder singing a beautiful song. The rebbe tossed some coins into the musician’s hat and requested that he sing the song over and over. The rebbe listened intently, following every phrase and reflecting on every tone. After a while, he began singing the tune, replacing its words with repeated vocables and infusing it with fervor and joy. Upon hearing the rebbe’s performance, the organ grinder forgot the song, for it had been cleansed and refashioned for sacred use.

This is exactly what happened with “The Anacreontic Song.” The new words of Francis Scott Key gave new meaning to the melody, and new significance to our national symbol: the red, white, and blue flag of stars and stripes. Nobody remembers the melody as an English drinking song. It has been cleansed and refashioned as a sacred song of our nation.

As President of The BKB Men’s Club I want to thank all the wonderful speakers that contributed to making the first half of 2018 the success it was. Our June speaker was Capt. Tom Miller of the Nevada Civil Air Patrol. He was introduced by Men’s Club member Barry Goldman, who himself is a member of the NV, CAP.

The Men’s Club will be dark in July and August.

We reopen in September, at The Durango Hills Country Club on the second Sunday, the 9th, with our own Rabbi Brooks speaking to us on Jewish Law.

The Board of The Men’s Club wants to wish everyone a good summer and looks forward to seeing all of you in September.

Tisha B’AvFive misfortunes befell our people on the nine of Av. Our people were forbidden to enter the promised land. The temple was destroyed the first and second time, The City of Bethar was captured and the city of Jerusalem was ploughed. We mourn, pray and the restrictions are the same as on Yom Kippur. For example: no food, no bathing, no shaving, and no engaging in sexual relations is permitted on the day of Tisha B’Av.
