Dear Friends,As August approaches, the chil-dren return to school and the Jewsreturn to Shul! During the sum-mer months many of us escape theheat of Arizona to cooler climates, but it’s always good to come hometo be among friends and family.Debbi and I are now back fromvacation and I return to Beth Elfully refreshed and excited aboutanother active and fulfilling year. I
have just concluded my tenth year as your rabbi and Ilook forward to serving you faithfully for many years tocome.
On August 25 we will have a very busy day at our syna-gogue. Not only does Talmud Torah resume on thatday, but we will also conduct another life saving blooddrive organized by our own Lori Rizzo (please see theenclosed flyer in this echo). Additionally, from 10:15a.m. to noon, we will be conducting High Holy Dayworkshops so that we can all be spiritually and intellec-tually prepared for the upcoming Days of Awe. BlanketBoosters will be knitting and crocheting that morning at9 a.m., and Dr. Janette Silverman, our EducationalDirector, will resume her Genealogy Workshops at 1p.m.
Since Rosh Hashanah begins on Wednesday evening,September 4, we will conduct the Selichot Service, aseries of penitential poems and prayers, on Saturdaynight August 31 (Labor Day weekend). This year we aregoing to start Selichot earlier in order to allow more ofour congregants and friends to attend. We will begin at7:30 p.m by showing a video from the famous sitcomseries “Everybody Loves Raymond,” which will serve asa trigger film for us to discuss the process of repentanceand forgiveness. At approximately 9:00 p.m. I will leadthe Selichot service which should last about 45 minutes. This is probably a good time to inform you that we havesecured a wonderful Hazzan for the upcoming HighHoly Days. Rabbi Avinoam Sharon is a Conservativerabbi who lives in Jerusalem and who is currently a doc-toral fellow at the Jewish Theological Seminary in NewYork City. I have known Avinoam since childhood aswe attended elementary school together. He is a bril-liant rabbi, an attorney, a retired Israeli military officer, and an accomplished, talented Hazzan. I am certainthat he will inspire us all with his voice and his Kavanah(heart and intention).
Finally, August is the very best time to invite your Jewishfriends, relatives, and neighbors to join you at Beth El.Please bring them with you to Shabbat services, to
Arthur LavinskyRabbi
The Rabbi is available for you!In addition to being able to schedule appointmentswith Rabbi Lavinsky throughout the week, he has alsoestablished “drop by” office hours from 8 – 10:30a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Furthermore, if you are in the hospital or anotherinstitution, or if you are unable to leave your home,Rabbi Lavinsky will happily visit you wherever youare. Just call the Rabbi at 602.944.3359, ext 108.
Remember – we’re here to serve you.
Selichot, or to join us for other programs. Remember, there is a reason that you belong to Beth ElCongregation – to be part of a loving and caring com-munity of faith. The very things that bring you to BethEl can also enhance the lives of fellow Jews. Every oneof you can be a goodwill ambassador. Get the word outthat we are a welcoming, open, egalitarian synagoguethat welcomes every possible configuration of the Jewishfamily.
Enjoy the rest of the summer, stay cool, and welcomeback to Shul!
L’Shalom,Rabbi Arthur Lavinsky
P.S.Debbi and I wish to thank everyone for reaching out toour family following the passing of her grandmother,Florence Hollender, of blessed memory.

Act for Good
According to Judaism 101, “a largepart of Jewish law is about treatingpeople with kindness. Jewish law com-mands us to love both Jews andstrangers, to give tzedakah (charity) tothe poor and needy, and not to wronganyone in speech or in business. Infact, acts of kindness are so much apart of Jewish law that the word "mitz-vah" (literally, "commandment") is
informally used to mean any good deed.”*
Act for the Good of Beth El
What does that mean? To me it means putting you, ourmembers, first and you supporting Beth El. I am not justtalking about financial support. Of course, we want andneed your financial support. I am talking about you“Acting for the Good of Beth El” by doing volunteerwork for Beth El. You can be a greeter on Shabbatmorning, work the reception desk, learn to read Torahand Haftorah, help prepare the Kiddush, assist atTalmud Torah or the Preschool or work on one of ourcommittees.
You can Act for the Good of Beth El by attending eventsand fundraisers and asking your friends and family toattend with you. You can Act for the Good of Beth El bytelling friends and family about our Preschool and anyother Beth El activities that might be of interest to non-members.
You Act for the Good of Beth El when you give con-structive suggestions to Board Members.
Act for the Good of Beth El. Contact a Board memberand make suggestions. Call Anne Schafer at602.944.3359, ext. 109 and volunteer. Act for the Goodof Beth El.
Shalom.

Shalom,I write this column to you on a glo-rious summer day – with the tem-perature well above 100 degrees forthe umpteenth day in a row, butI’m excited to soon be heading upnorth to the Seattle area for severaldays of rest and relaxation.
As I reflect on the last year – and tome the year is from one High HolyDay celebration to the next – Ithink about the fact that Beth El is
a critical institution in Central Phoenix. Because I’m an“insider,” I have a greater opportunity to know the waysour congregation touches, changes, challenges, and com-forts our membership. We are the spiritual, intellectual, and social hub for many of you. You have entrusted uswith your children, some of you with your grandchil-dren, your families, your wonderful highs as well as yourpainful lows. I believe we are always ready, whateveryour need is, and I want you to know I consider it anhonor and privilege to be part of the everyday congrega-tional life as well as the glorious Beth El history as Iapproach my seventh anniversary as your ExecutiveDirector.
I feel blessed to work with our incredible volunteers andthe synagogue leadership – who all care about every facetof what goes on here. I feel that part of our success ispossible because of the efforts given every day by ourvolunteers, our staff, our clergy, and our Board ofDirectors – the stewards of the congregation, andagain…my sense is that I am truly blessed and proud ofour congregational family.
It’s unbelievable that the holidays are so early this year, but as Rabbi Lavinsky reminds me on a regular basis, theholidays come at the same time every year. However, based on the secular calendar, Erev Rosh Hashanah ison September 4th, the Wednesday after Labor Day andin my book – that’s early! I know many of you go awayfor the summer months, and may be inclined to stayright where you are for the holidays. I am hopeful thatwhether you have been a part of Beth El for a few weeks,a few months, or for years - that you come home to BethEl. 5774 is almost here. I look forward to spending itwith you in sweetness and great health.
Looking ahead, we’re going to be busy around herepreparing for the holidays. In the meantime, there arequite a few weeks of summer remaining. Be well, andstay cool!

EDUCATION NewsThis summer has been one of delightfulsurprises. It actually began in May duringthe last USY event of the year. Along witha group of our chapter’s members I wentto Camp Alonim for RegionalConvention as I had in May 2012. If youwere a member of USY, you may remem-ber the excitement of greeting old friends. You may also remember the buildingexcitement – who will win the regionalelections, who will receive the manyawards being given out, who is bunking
with whom for the weekend?
USY is wonderful. Far West Regional Convention withover 300 USYers from California, Arizona, Nevada, Utahand New Mexico is fantastic. Many USYers also go toRamah for the summer so kinnusim and Regional give ourUSYers more opportunities to see Camp friends. Thisyear, we arrived late on Friday afternoon. Opening exer-cises had already begun. In fact we arrived barely in timeto change for Shabbat dinner. To my surprise and delight, one of the first awards, the Jackie Saltz award was given toour very own Michael Anthony. The award, named after along-time USCJ volunteer is given to an exceptional USYer.Graduating senior, Michael Anthony, Beth El’s USYPresident is certainly deserving of the award. Our chapteralso received an award for raising over $300 for TikkunOlam.
A few weeks later I had the opportunity to attend theInternational Society of Technology in EducationConference. Scott Wiegand, the Talmud Torah TechConsultant and I were one of ten teams chosen by PELIEto attend the conference. In the weeks leading up to theconference, this year held in San Antonio, I was over-whelmed by the amount of email I was getting from a vari-ety of Special Interest Groups (SIGs) – there were story-tellers, special needs, Arizona teachers and probably tenother SIGs sending me emails and tweets. I really couldn’tfigure out what the big deal was. Then we got to SanAntonio- two of us among over 17,000 other people.Seeing the crowds of participants and the hundreds of ven-dors generated a huge amount of excitement. Over threedays Scott and I had a terrific opportunity to speak withvendors and educators from all over the world about BethEl On-Line. We were looking for material and ideas thatwould make our system easier to use. What we discoveredwas that our project is truly cutting edge – although similarsystems may be in place in post-secondary education, in theK-12 world, no one is doing what we are. We are all usingthe same terminology but not necessarily meaning the samething. It was easy for me to become confused. Words likeblended classroom, synchronous and asynchronous learn-ing were being tossed around. We have blended class-rooms – students and a teacher can be in a physical class-room and another participant can be off-site and virtuallyparticipating. Some others used “blended” to mean a class-
Janette SilvermanEducation &Youth Director
room where different types of technology was beingused at the same time. Obviously, it became clearvery quickly what the differences in meaning were.
I bring the conference up at this time to emphasizethat just because we engage in conversation withfriends and neighbors and use the same words, theydo not always have the same meaning. Beforejumping to conclusions and arguing with yourfriends, make sure that the words you are usingmean the same things. And yes, Scott and I had afantastic time at the conference and learned anawful lot!
USY News
Dear Friends,
I hope everyone has been havinga relaxing summer and has foundsome way to survive in this crazyheat! I can’t wait to hear from allof the students as they return
from camp and, most excitingly, Israel! I remem-ber my first trip to Israel like it was yesterday and Iam eager to hear how their trip to the Holy Landhas impacted their lives.
As we reach August, we get increasingly closer toour first USY event! USY will be going to Wet n’Wild on August 25 and we would LOVE for your7th-12th graders to join us! Please feel free to “like”our group on Facebook (Beth El USY) to stay intouch with us during this upcoming school year. Asalways, feel welcome to contact me with any ques-tions at [email protected].

Preschool NewsIt is with great anticipation and joy that Iwelcome back our children, parents, fam-ilies and staff to Beth El Preschool for the2013-2014 school year. I am delighted tobe returning again as director. Beth El hasbeen my home for the past 14 years and Ilook forward to working alongside knowl-edgeable parents and staff who hold highexpectations for our children. Simply put,our vision is to embrace opportunities, unlock potential, encourage individuality
and inspire excellence.
This year we have some exciting new ventures. We haveopened up a second infant room that will be for our youngerinfants, 6 weeks to crawling, “The Snugglebugs,” and ourother infant room, “The Mazel Tots,” will be for our babiesthat are crawling and taking their first steps. It is our goal tomake an easy transition from home to school or from oneclassroom to the next. We provide a fun and loving environ-ment that nurtures the babies development and their needs.
Our other exciting news is that we are now officially the firstcertified outdoor classroom in Phoenix through the NatureExplore and the Arbor Day Foundation. This year the chil-dren’s daily schedule will include planned activities outsideincorporating their weekly theme. By having an OutdoorClassroom, we are sending out a message that we value theeducation of our children and want to encourage them to dis-cover, inquire, and learn about the environment. We inviteand encourage parents, family and the Beth El community towork in partnership with us and to seize any opportunity forinvolvement and support in the children’s education. Thecommunity is vital to the success and overall growth of ourPreschool.
Please feel free to visit us on our web page at bethel-preschoolphx.com, to learn more about our center and toview pictures of the children and classrooms. You can alsofriend us on Facebook.
Here’s to a fabulous New Year.
