Help BetH Israel lIgHt tHe Way By President Meg Mandel

One aspect of Beth Israel of which I am most proud is our commitment to make membership accessible to everyone. Whether it is young families just starting out, senior citizens living on fixed incomes, or those who have fallen on difficult times, we work hard to find ways to help people belong. Despite our desire to keep our doors open to all, making this a reality becomes more challenging each year.

Like many synagogues across the country, Beth Israel is faced with the worrisome national trend of declining synagogue membership. As is the case with so many synagogues, membership dues account for only a portion of temple revenue. At Beth Israel, dues account for only 37% of our budgeted revenue, and 48% of our members receive dues subsidies. Last year alone, we invested more than $750,000 to subsidize memberships for many in the Beth Israel family.

The numbers paint a clear picture that additional financial support is critical to bridge the gap. One of the ways we have been able to offset the expense of the much needed subsidies is through Beth Israel’s Light the

By Rabbi Michael Berk

Our world became a bit of a darker place last summer with the suicide of Robin Williams. It really shook us to the core. This was America’s clown. He brought joy and laughter and light into our lives. How could he be gone? How sad it is that one who made us so happy was himself so sad. He could lift us from the depths, but not himself. I have such a hard time understanding the dark cloud of sadness and mental anguish and

despair and utter hopelessness that leads someone to end it all.

And then I remembered something that happened when I was 18-years-old. Something that’s difficult to talk about. Our family had travelled to Phoenix to celebrate my mother’s aunt and uncle’s 50th wedding anniversary. Ever since my mother and father moved to California to start a business and a family after WWII my mother was lonely and sorely missed her big loving family in St. Paul. The family celebration was actually painful for her. She became sad. I remember the long drive home and my mom saying some odd things in the car that caught my attention. Later that night, as we were watching television, I noticed my mom writing something that looked like a letter. I managed a glance and figured out quickly what was going on. My mother was planning to kill herself that night and she was writing a suicide note. I somehow got my father’s attention and we stopped her.

There is mental illness in my family. And I bet there is in many of yours as well. My message today is quite simple: we need to be more open about talking about mental illness. There used to be a shame associated with cancer. People didn’t want to use the word. But we got over it. People can talk about cancer. But that’s not the case with mental illness. We still are afraid to talk about it.

Way Annual Fund. Each of you has already received a letter asking for your participation in this year’s Light the Way Annual Fund campaign. If you have already made your gift, thank you. If you have not donated yet, you still have time. Our goal this year is to reach 100% participation by Beth Israel members.

Every gift counts, and every gift makes a difference—whether it is $36 or $3,600 or $36,000. By making a contribution, each of us sends a clear message that we care about our members and we are committed to the health and vibrancy of Beth Israel. This year, we are making it easier than ever to make your gift. On Sunday, December 7, we will hold our first “Light the Way-a-thon”. Beth Israel volunteers will gather together for a phone-a-thon to make calls to our members to talk about Light the Way gifts. We look forward to talking to you, so please be sure to take our call on December 7.

As I said in my remarks during the High Holy Days, each and every one of us at Beth Israel matters, and each of us can do something to support our community. A gift to the Light the Way Annual Fund speaks volumes about the importance of every Beth Israel member, and it is one of the many ways each of us can make an impact on our community. Each of us can show our commitment to caring for one another and strengthening Beth Israel by making a gift to the Light the Way Annual Fund.

...every one of us at Beth Israel matters, and each of us can do something to support our community.

“If we truly intend for our synagogues...to be places of healing, then mental health needs to become part of our larger conversation.”A colleague of mine, Rabbi Jeffrey Salkin, wrote that Robin Williams’ death [should] prompt us to seriously confront how we, as a Jewish community, deal with mental illness. It’s not only depression. It’s also bi-polar disorder, and schizophrenia and PTSD – not to mention the entire range of addictions.”

Rabbi Salkin then speaks of those in the biblical story who show signs of mental illness; the likes of Moses, King Saul, King David and Elijah. He talks about Jews in history who were given to bouts of inner darkness and depression, like Theodor Herzel and Moshe Dayan. And, finally, he writes, there is the history of depression in secular Jewish culture, from Kafka to Woody Allen. And he continues: “For

Q Do you like California better

than Vermont? Do you miss snow?

A I loved Vermont, but there’s a lot to love

about California too. Especially the beach and the avocados. And I don’t miss snow. But I do miss fall, and apple cider donuts, and my friends.

Q Do you have any pets?

A I don’t have any pets, but someday I would

like to own two very big dogs.

Q What is your favorite

Jewish hol iday?

A My favorite Jewish holiday is Purim. I love

everything about it. I love that it’s really the story of how the least powerful person in the Jewish community (Esther, a poor, orphan Jewish girl living in a majority non-Jewish society) made the biggest difference. I also love that God never makes an appearance, and that it’s about redemption despite God’s apparent absence in the world; the notion that we, ourselves, can play a role in creating the world we pray for.

Q What’s your favorite

beach to surf?

A My favorite beach to surf is probably

Cardiff, when the waves aren’t too big.

Rabbi Gerson: So how are you feeling about this [Bar Mitzvah] process?Bar Mitzvah Boy: (a surfer): It’s cool. But what I really want is to go surfing with you.His Dad: First finish learning your Torah portion and then we’ll talk surfing.

Jr. Kindergartener: Rabbi Jordie, can you talk to God on top of a mountain?Rabbi Gerson: Yes. But it’s even better than that. You can talk to God anywhere! Anytime!Entire Class of 25 Four-Year-Olds: HI GOD!!! HEY GOD!!! HOW ARE YOU?! HIIIIIII!!!

Rabbi Gerson: If you could say thank you to God in your own words and write just one thank you prayer, what would you thank God for?First Grade Student: Bacon. Because it is the best food EVER.Rabbi Gerson: (speechless)

Q Did you like Hebrew School

when you were a kid?

A No. I hated Hebrew school, and was even

kicked out once for asking too many questions. (And I was the rabbi’s daughter!) That’s why I try to make my classes fun, interesting and relevant (I hope!).

My husband Mitch and I are as fond of our Point Loma/Ocean Beach neighborhood as we are of our Beth Israel community, so we thought it was time we brought the two together to celebrate the New Year. In October, we hosted a Break the Fast potluck for Beth Israel congregants living in the 92106/92107 zip codes.

We were quite pleased with the response at the end of such a long day. It was a beautiful evening and we were joined, under the stars by more than

40 guests; 25 adults and 16 kids. With help from Beth Israel on the membership list and email addresses, the event was surprisingly easy to coordinate. We issued an Evite, cleaned the house and asked everyone

to bring a dish to share. We provided a couple of main courses and beverages.

Our guests included old friends like Kelly and Andy Greene, Maureen and Scott Glaser, Jackie and Charlie Mann, Nicole and John Sieger and Karen Gruenberg and their kids, new friends like neighbors two streets over Seekey Cacciatore and Cory Briggs, Tali and Mark Tuchin, Michele Melden and

Ben Nieberg and their three children, choir family Annette and Ben Vollrath and their four children and new San Diegans and brand new Beth Israel members Maria and Alex Genin.

Of course, the food was incredible – the delicious cupcake noodle raisin kugels (Grandma Greene’s old family recipe) were a big hit. Ashkenazi staples like smoked salmon and Israeli cucumber and tomato salad were among the favorites. The desserts – including Seekey’s homemade Key Lime pie and Beth Schulefand’s delicious fruit salad – were to die for.

After dinner, we relaxed outside on the deck. Each

family spoke a bit about the importance of Judaism in their lives and their history as members of Beth Israel. It was a very enlightening conversation and a wonderful way to learn more about our neighbors – many of whom we met for the very first time.

The highlight of the evening was a surprise visit by

Rabbi Cantor Bernstein. The kids were so happy to see her that they stopped their ping pong game to greet her with big hugs! Another highlight was how much the kids enjoyed being together. In fact everyone enjoyed being together so much that we agreed that this is the first of what we hope will be a long tradition of Point Loma/Ocean Beach gatherings for Temple members.

at [email protected], or (858) 279.2740.

This year the Jewish Community Foundation rolled out a brand new program called the Jewish Teen Foundation. The program is geared toward San Diego Jewish high school teens that are interested in making a difference in their community through philanthropic giving. This year-long program helps to develop leadership skills and concepts in strategic philanthropy. Teens will be taken through the philanthropic process, learn about the inner workings of nonprofit organizations and ultimately decide which organizations to support

through meaningful and significant grantmaking. Most importantly, the teens will participate in a series of discussions on how Jewish values can guide and inform their decisions and provide perspective on how to prioritize giving.

Through a competitive application and interview process, 28 teens were selected to become Program Officers for the Jewish Teen Foundation. They represent 16 different high schools and eight different synagogues.

We are pleased to announce that the following teens have been selected from Beth Israel to be a part of this program:

Samantha Leitner Rebecca Siegler Ethan Stern Ellis Emma Voit

The 2014-2015 Jewish Teen Foundation has decided to embrace the Jewish value of B’tzelem Elohim to help guide their decision-making. As such, they are committed to understanding and strategically funding organizations that actively work toward securing human rights for women and children. There will be a community presentation by the Jewish Teen Foundation on May 20, 2015.

Executive Committee and Finance/Budget Committee of the Board, and a member of the Endowment Campaign Cabinet. He was also co-chairman of Beth Israel’s Strategic Planning Committee.

Mitch and his family have been members of Beth Israel since 1990 and are active in various Jewish and civic organizations. In 2006, Mitch co-founded and serves as Senior Managing Director of Pathfinder Partners, LLC, a leading real estate private equity firm headquartered in San Diego.

Mitch began his career as a corporate executive for Anheuser-Busch, Inc., spent five years as a partner with a boutique investment banking/venture capital firm and several years as a partner in a national management consulting

firm. He also founded and served as CEO of several businesses. Mitch earned a B.S. with honors in finance from the University of Missouri, Columbia, and an M.B.A. with the highest honors from the Graziadio School of Business and Management at Pepperdine University. He speaks frequently at real estate conferences, writes regularly for national real estate and finance publications and is widely quoted in the news media. Mitch and his wife, Elizabeth, live in Point Loma with their children, Jacob, 19, who was a member of the Madrichim program and a member of the 2011 confirmation class and is now a Sophomore at U.C. Davis and a counselor at Camp Hess Kramer, and Rebecca, 14, who became a Bat Mitzvah at Beth Israel in 2013 and is a member of the Madrichim program and the San Diego Jewish Community Foundation’s Teen Philanthropy Program.

Temple President Meg Mandel says “Mitch has demonstrated outstanding leadership and a strong commitment to Beth Israel. He has a clear vision to strengthen and sustain the temple which will position us well for the future.”

all these reasons, and more, it is long past time for American Jews to start lifting the veil of secrecy, shame and stigma that presently covers our approach to mental illness. If we truly intend for our synagogues and other institutions to be places of healing, then mental health needs to become part of our larger conversation.”

That is why our Caring Community, under the leadership of our committee co-chairs Susan Levy and Elizabeth Siegler and staff liaison Bethany Ratner has begun turning its attention to issues of mental health this coming year. We began with a visit at the end of October by Rabbi Richard Address, who has done the most work getting the Reform Movement and our synagogues focused on this important issue.

Rabbi Salkin concluded his thoughts with this: “The best memorial that we could erect for Robin Williams? A Jewish community that takes his struggle, and the struggle of so many, seriously.” Let’s start building that memorial here at Beth Israel.

This year we are commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights movement which was actively and bravely supported by our national reform movement as well as rabbis and congregations throughout the United States. No one knows more than the Jewish people the impact of being deprived of civil rights and no one takes more seriously the responsibility to do Tikkun Olam/Repair of the World. What can be learned from that historic Civil Rights Movement that still applies to our lives today? Whether we witnessed the Jim Crow laws of segregation in the South or are horrified by acts of intolerance, bias and bullying

in the present, it is incumbent upon us to ensure that the past is not a familiar echo of the present.

History of Jews in the Civil Rights MovementMany Jewish Americans went to Mississippi in 1964 to fight for civil rights in what became known as the “Freedom Summer.” Others helped register African American voters in various southern states. In June 1964, two Jews, Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner, were murdered with one African-American, James Chaney, after entering Mississippi to register black voters.

Much of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and 1965 Voting Rights Act were written in the building that is home to the Reform Movement’s Religious Action Center, which has long been a hub of civil rights activity. Several early presidents of the NAACP were Jews. Rabbi David Saperstein, the RAC’s Director for more than three decades, has served as the sole white member of the National Board of the NAACP.

Civil Rights Lessons from Our TraditionConsider the parallels between the Israelite’s struggle for freedom and the struggle of African Americans. First, there are common elements of

South, whites enslaved Africans and then created “Jim Crow” measures aimed at keeping blacks out of mainstream society, such as grandfather clauses, segregated education, literacy tests (often with different standards for whites and blacks), and poll taxes. There is also a direct parallel between Moses’ assertion of rights for the Israelites, and civil rights leaders’ assertion of rights for African Americans in the 1960s. Pharaoh responds to Moses by rebuking him and making life harder for the Jews by increasing their workload. Likewise, southern whites responded to black claims of equality by making their life more difficult and threatening and assaulting civil rights leaders with violence.

Commemorationg the 50th AnniversaryOn this milestone 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Reform Jewish community joins advocates nationwide in paying tribute to a generation of activists whose struggles more than five decades ago changed our nation for the better.

No one knows more than the Jewish people the impact of being deprived of civil rights

enslavement, the desire for liberty, the role and importance of leadership within the community, the tendency within the ruling class to resist the forces of social change, and the ultimate triumph of justice. In Shemot, Exodus, Pharaoh places heavy burdens on Bnei Yisrael, the Children of Israel, that included heavy taxes and the killing of newborn males, in addition to enslaving the Hebrews so that they could not use their numbers to overthrow the status quo. Latkes are traditionally served for Hanukkah because they are cooked in oil (to commemorate the vial of oil lasting for 8 days). However, since they are pareve when served without sour cream, they are also a perfect accompaniment to a beef or chicken entrée. For an elegant appetizer, prepare as small rounds and top with sour cream and caviar.Makes 2 to 4 dozen depending on size

Ingredients: 6–8 large thin-skinned potatoes, California long whites or Yukon Gold3 eggs, beaten well1 tablespoon salt1/2 teaspoon freshly ground pepper1/2 cup matzah meal or cracker meal1 large onion, cut into 8 piecesOil for fryingApplesauce (optional)Sour cream (optional)

Directions: 1. Grate the raw potatoes using the large

grating disk on a processor or the largest holes on a grater if doing it by hand. Place the grated potato in a colander, rinse with cold water. Set aside to drain.

2. Combine eggs, salt, pepper, and matzah meal or cracker meal in a 3-quart bowl. Mix thoroughly.

3. Change to the cutting blade on your processor. Add the onions to the work bowl. Pulse on and off 5 times. Add 1/4 of the grated potatoes to the onion and pulse on and off to make a coarse paste. Add to the egg mixture and stir to combine.

4. Add the drained potatoes to the bowl and mix thoroughly, using a large spoon or your hands.

5. Heat a large frying pan or large skillet for 20 seconds. Add enough oil to cover the pan to a depth of 1/4 inch and heat for an additional 10 seconds. Drop mounds of potato mixture into the pan. Fry on both sides until golden. Drain the fried latkes on a platter covered with crumpled paper towels. Serve with applesauce and sour cream.
