NEWSLETTERWeek 1 Term 4 2019

FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Welcome back to our final Term for 2019. I hope that you were able to enjoy some refreshing time with yourchildren in the school break. We have had a very settled start. This week we have had a small group ofteachers from our sister school, Hope School, in Indonesia, visiting us. Teachers have been hosting them in theevenings and they have enjoyed participating our in daily school events. It has also been wonderful to showthem around some of the sights of Adelaide. I look forward to seeing how this experience helps to change theirperspective of what a school could look like and how education is a process that is so much more thanschooling.
We have some upcoming events for you to mark in your calendar. Our Year 3 students have a sleepover on the24th of October. This is a wonderful way to prepare our students for future school camps as it gives them theopportunity to safely stay away from home overnight. It is also a lot of fun to spend time with their classmatesand teachers doing some different activities and building relationships together. On Tuesday 5th November wehave our Mini Olympics for Reception and Year 1 students. On Tuesday 12th November we hold our iPadInformation Night for our families with Year 5 students for 2020. The Temple Orientation for our Year 6 studentswho are moving there for Year 7 is on Thursday 21st November. Our visiting Dental Clinic is here between the21st October and the 1st November. Please return the appropriate paperwork for your child if you would like toparticipate.
Some other important events to mention as we approach the end of the year include our Junior Primary concert(Reception to Year 2), “Faith, Hope and Love,” on Wednesday 27th November. This will have a matinee andevening performance with tickets available later this term. These tickets are free and ensure that all familiescan attend. We will give you plenty of notice for when these tickets will become available. The Primarystudents (Year 3 - Year 6), will present an exhibition called “Brilliance”. This exhibition will showcase students’passions and interests showing that they are created in God's image. We launched a 7 week challenge onWednesday with all of the Primary students together to begin our thinking. The challenge will provide 2 lessonseach Wednesday afternoon to create a product that allows each child to shine brightly. We want to build uponthe skills they are learning to allow each student to explore, experience and discover how we each have beencreated differently and can contribute to creating something to show others. The word brilliance also impliesexcellence, inspiration, inventiveness and wisdom. We believe that as we allow students the opportunity tomake decisions, express ideas, give and receive feedback and work to create a product, they learn more aboutthemselves and others. We believe that they each will shine in different ways and we will support this process. We have encouraged students to start by thinking about what they are interested in and who they might like towork with, reminding them that sometimes it is better to work with people who help us to be more productive or
people who have skills we can learn from or that we can share. Although we like to spend time with our friends, others with the skills that we need may be a wiser choice.
I facilitated the launch session this week and was so encouraged by the cross year level conversations, themature listening from all students and the way that they began their initial prototypes. This activity stretchedus as we worked as a whole group to learn together and to build more foundational skills. There is plenty ofwork to be done but it was an excellent start. The Brilliance Exhibition will be held on Wednesday 4th Decemberso please keep this date free. I am looking forward to showing the Brilliance of our students as they reflect thegoodness of our God in many and varied ways.
I pray that you have a restful weekend.
God bless,
Wendy Matear

DEPUTY'S CORNER
DEPUTY'S CORNER
Welcome back from the school break. I trust you all had a wonderful time with your families.
Term 4 is already shaping up to be a big term with events such as the Year 3 sleep-over in Week 2, MiniOlympics in Week 4, and an SRC Disco in Week 5, not to mention the Year 6 Temple Orientation, the JPChristmas Concert and the Brilliance Exhibition later this term! With so much going on it is so important to keepimportant healthy living skills such as a regular bed time, good nutritious food and plenty of water and sensibleclothing for the changeable weather. We want to end the year off well and in full health!
Summer Uniform
It is Term 4, therefore it is Summer Uniform. Please ensure your child is coming to school in the correctSummer Uniform, including the correct socks, shoes, and hat. PE uniform can only be worn on the PE days. Ifyou are unsure about what the uniform requirements are, please refer to your child’s school diary, pages 13 –15. Please encourage your child to make great choices to leave all jewellery at home. The accepted accessoryshould be a single wristwatch. If you are in doubt and have questions, please see your child’s teacher.
eSafety Parent and Carers from eSafety Commissioner
There are many of our students who are either already accessing social media sites or would dearly love to. However, many of the sites our students wish to use often come with an age limit of 13+. I found some tipsfrom the eSafety Commissioner (www.esafety.gov.au) that might help you make some wise decisions with yourchild.
When are they ready for social media accounts?
Both the physical age of your child and their level of maturity and resilience can affect their ability to havepositive experiences on social media.
Each social media site and app has its own criteria for minimum age requirements. Most require users to be atleast 13 years of age before they can register, although some sites are created especially for children under 13.
Key questions to help determine your child’s readiness for social media
We suggest considering these questions to determine whether your child is ready for social media.
Is your child able to withstand negative online experiences?Does your child understand the importance of protecting their personal information?Does your child understand how privacy settings for social media work?Does your child understand what is safe to share online?Does your child know how to report cyberbullying and other kinds of abusive content? Is your child willing to let you establish clear rules and supervise their social media activity?
Each question is expanded on the website with useful links for parents to follow. It is a site well worth visitingshould you and your child be considering using social media. It is worth remembering that often social mediasites for 13+ year olds require a level maturity to be able to cope with the above mentioned points. Your childmight not yet be ready for Facebook, Instagram, Tik.Tok, Snap Chat etc. It is not a ‘no’ forever, it is just a ‘notyet’.
I wish you a very successful term with your child.
God bless you,
Deb Clifford

For Miss Fitzharris and I, it was a pleasure to coach this group of girls. The team, led by captain Taylor, showedmarked improvement throughout the day. Although the team suffered losses in their first 2 games they did notlet this dampen their enthusiasm. By game 3 things began to click and the team started to find the back of theopposition’s net whilst keeping things more secure at the back. After the 2 initial losses the girls went on to wintheir remaining 4 games convincingly, netting 15 goals and conceding only 3. Each player made valuablecontributions during the tournament and, as coaches, we were proud of the way that the girls competed on theday.

It was a privilege to coach these boys this year. The team comprised of players with varying degrees ofexperience, including players who had never played a competitive game to those who play weekly at club level.
It was fantastic to see the players with experience share their knowledge and understanding of the game withtheir peers. Our captain, William and vice-captain Rick, did a fantastic job of leading their team mates, reflecting on games and giving meaningful feedback that led to improvement in the team’s performancethroughout the day. Each player made valuable contributions during the day and I am proud of the way that theboys conducted themselves and represented our school at the carnival.
