PASTOR’S PERSPECTIVE

Fear, quite often, limits our willingness to confidently live out our Christian witnessing. Fear

contributes to our unwillingness to engage elements of life that are important to our faith journey. Fear quite often takes people away from necessary action in proclaiming the gospel. Fear often perpetuates destructive behaviors, limiting potential for individual growth and growth in our relationships. The theme song for the movie The Rose sung by Bette Midler has a great phrase that addresses the ultimate consequence of living a fear driven life. “It’s the soul afraid of dying that never learns to live.” Have you ever noticed how fear tends to magnify the gravity of a given situation? Fear tends to make mountains out of molehills. I remember when I was young and would stay too late at a friend’s house and I would have to walk home alone in the dark. In my mind every noise was a horrible monster waiting to get me and every car contained people who wanted to hurt me. Although I only had to go a half of a block, in my mind it seemed like miles. Fear tends to be a magnifier. I would like you to consider what you are afraid of. What fear is holding you in bondage? What fear is limiting your life? What fear is stopping you from witnessing? What fear has limited your freedom in God’s kingdom? In Luke 12:32-35 Jesus speaks to our fear. Jesus’ asserts that fear drives us to do things that are not constructive for our faith walk. The phrase, do not be afraid, was used often by Jesus, angels, and God to open doors of conversation by reducing the anxiety in the hearts of those gathered. The anxiety Jesus addressed pertained to earthly things, monetary worth and daily needs. Those gathered were fretting about food, clothing, shelter, and even nonessential things in their lives. They had fallen into fear and had begun exhibiting behaviors that showed their unwillingness to trust God’s grace. Jesus meets fear with faith. Verse 32 reads “Do not be afraid little flock, for it is your father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.” This is a gentle call to live unbridled by fears that are preventing you from fully experiencing God’s kingdom. To receive, one has to let go. Jesus reminds us in verse 34, “where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” The opposite of faith is not doubt, but indifference. Former South African President Nelson Mandela sums this up nicely in his inaugural address in 1994. “You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It is not just in some of us, it is in everyone. And as we let our light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our fears, our presence automatically liberates others.” Jesus draws us away from our fears and back to the bare necessities of life. In verse 35 Jesus says, “Be dressed for action and have your lamps lit.” The first call is to be dressed for action. Confidence in Jesus allows us to approach the world differently. Confidence in Jesus, embedded in our hearts, radiates out into the lives of others. The second call is to have your lamps lit, to draw upon God’s word as your light. I encourage you to read the Bible daily. Making confident decisions, as Christians, is dependent upon seeing the world through the lens of faith. Daily scripture reading allows us to see the world, as God would have us see it, not as we would like to see it or as others would like us to see it. “Do not be afraid.” Meet your fears with faith, let your light shine, and live in the confidence of God’s love. Amen.

A TIME OF GIVING Thank you so much for your continued support and giving to the ministries at Bethany Lutheran during these difficult times. Giving has been good even with our current crisis. As the Covid-19 crisis continues we are seeing people in need financially coming to us for assistance. Even though we can’t gather, many of our expenses continue. Our giving to date through July 26 is $171,358 to continue our ministry and mission goals and expand our outreach to those in need, we will have to give $44,167 from August 1 through September 30. One way to accomplish this is through electronic giving. Bette and I find it very helpful to accomplish giving of our “first fruits”. To do this, go to bethanyiowafalls.net and click on the “On-Line Giving” button or you can fill out the form below and send it to the church. Thank you for your faithful stewardship.

September 2020, LSI Bulletin/Newsletter Article and Story Direct Support Professionals Week

Do you know someone who is a caregiver to a loved one? It is a role that is both demanding and meaningful. During September’s National Direct Support Professionals Week, we celebrate all the ways in which professional caregivers help children and adults achieve their goals and build meaningful lives, especially during the extra challenges surrounding COVID-19 this year.

One-way LSI empowers Iowans is through our Services for People with Disabilities. From 24-hour support to occasional respite care, the LSI team lifts up Iowans with disabilities as they find the confidence and independence they need to thrive. In recent months, our DSPs have been dedicated to the people we are privileged to serve, adding extra safety measures to continue supporting individuals in our 24-hour facilities and providing new activities to keep everyone entertained and busy when leaving the house was not safely an option.

This high-quality care is possible because of you – thank you for lifting up your Iowa neighbors in times of crisis! If you would like to learn more about how you can support crucial programming like LSI’s Services for People with Disabilities, please contact Deb Whitford, LSI director of philanthropy and church relations, at 563-676-2065 or [email protected].

Our Mission: Lutheran Services in Iowa responds to the love of Jesus Christ through compassionate service. LSI is an affiliated social ministry partner of the Iowa congregations of the ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America) and a member of LSA (Lutheran Services in America). We proudly serve people of all ages, abilities, religions, sexes, gender identities, national origins, ethnicities, races, and sexual orientations. Learn more at www.LSIowa.org and www.facebook.com/LSI.iowa.

We are Still Here: LSI’s Services for People with Disabilities

LSI Team Leader Ada works at Harmony House in Muscatine, a 24/7 care facility provided through LSI’s Services for People with Disabilities. The home provides consistent care to five Iowans with intensive disabilities and medical conditions. Ada and her team assist residents with most parts of their day, from movement around the home and hygiene routines to medications and meals.

Because of COVID-19, the residents at Harmony House have not been able to safely see their families or participate in the volunteering or work they love, as some are able to do. But Ada and her team are there to offer a familiar face and structure when everything else feels uncertain. On days when clients feel scared or unsure, Ada and her team provide support and comfort.

Throughout the pandemic, Ada and her team have worked long hours to ensure they follow additional safety precautions, protecting both themselves and the clients they serve.

“We are an essential part of their daily life, regardless of whatever storm lies in front of us. My work is needed for my clients to survive,” Ada says. “But they are essential to me and the other staff. They are the reason we do what we do.”

We will be excited to see everyone drive through on September 13th.

LUTHERAN WORLD RELIEF: LAST CALL FOR SCHOOL SUPPLIES! We have completed 95 school kits! 5 to go to our goal! Thank You for helping us reach our goal! Linda Lehtola

BARNABAS HOUSE UPDATE: It is with grateful hearts that we welcomed our first family to Barnabas House at St. Mark. Callie and Hilary Watkins and their five children were displaced from their home after a house fire on July 29. Through many months of volunteer work, the Barnabas House was ready to go just when it was needed! Please keep the Watkins family in your prayers as they work through this difficult time. They are so grateful to have a home for their family right now. If you’d like to donate food/meals or gift cards, or help in some other way, please contact Bethany Lutheran Church at 641-648-3555. Thank you for your continued support of Barnabas House!

FOOD PANTRY: The Hardin County Emergency Food Pantry provides food, toiletries, hygiene products and other essentials to families and individuals in need in Hardin County. The Food Pantry is supported by community donations, so we need your help. The giving box is in the Fellowship Hall. Thank you for caring.

Property Updates: You may have noticed some changes to our property. We have a new roof because a storm earlier in the year damaged our roof and our insurance company paid for us to replace it. We also added gravel to the west parking lot so that people would have a better place to park when they come to worship. We're asking that if you sit on the west side of the sanctuary that you park in the west parking lot. We are doing this to help with social distancing. It also looks much better than before. We will also be pulling the plants out of the garden between the handicap parking and the portico. If you want any of these plants, please come and get them now. This will help us to maintain the property, so we have a better curb appeal.
