ANNOUNCEMENTS Pastor Mike

OFFERTORY PRAYER Great and generous God, our lives are surrounded by things that steal our lives, inflict and destroy us. The tithes and offering we share with you this day are a way of keeping us focused not on the things that would take life away but will renew our lives: hope, love, compassion, empathy. We pray in the holy name of Jesus the Messiah. Amen.

In Walk Humbly today’s devotional writer writes Losing and Winning, an important life lesson a young daughter taught her mother. Consider helping someone succeed today by giving to the Society of St. Andrew, a nationwide ministry focused on caring for actual physical hunger. Every $3 provides 20 meals of nutritious, fresh food for the hungry.

Monday, March 15th:

Billy and Carolyn Davis. Billy continues to have cortisone shots in his hips and gel in his knees through the VA in Hampton. Prayers for strengthening and better movement in his walking. Carolyn has her COVID shots and Billy will get his second one soon. They have full custody of their 11-yr.-old great-granddaughters Alexis Davis and Sabrina Davis (twins) who are 5th graders at Achilles. Prayers for Alexis and Sabrina in these tender years and for Billy and Carolyn as they raise them.

Scriptures: Psalm 16:1,2, 5-11; Philippians 2:12-18; Matthew 22:35-40.

Wednesday, March 17th:

Rick and Gerri Wilson. Rick has pulmonary sarcoidosis and is waiting on some test results on his left lung: he has seen an oncologist who has said it’s not cancer. It may be chemical exposure from his tours in the Middle East. They are blessed with great neighbors and friends and that Rick is working. Prayers for patience, a good report, and improved physical health.

Scriptures: Psalm 59: 16-17; Psalm 105:1-9; Mark 7:31-37.

FOCUSED PRAYER Preferred time 7-9am or 7-9pm, wherever you are

CONGRATULATIONS, RUDY---Beginning on Monday, March 15th one of Rudy Shackelford’s

musical compositions will be featured on the following website: brassquintetforum.com. It will then be on the site’s main menu for six weeks and remain accessible to site visitors for the foreseeable future. The composition, titled INFOLIATIONS, was commissioned by the Annapolis (MD) Brass Quintet, who performed the world première on 21 February 1988. The website will have a photo of the composer (seated at Bethany’s sanctuary organ) together with a biographical sketch and program notes about the music. Best of all, the score and parts (i.e., sheet music) will be archived in perpetuity at the world-renowned Oberlin (OH) Conservatory of Music, available for research and future performances.

The Bethany Bible Buddies (Also Known As: "3B's") and the Youth Group (AKA: "Uth ") will meet after worship on Sunday, March 21st in the Fellowship Hall. Please bring your smile and your Bible!

THANK YOU NOTES

Life changes after you lose a kidney, but the love of Bethany Church members continues. Thank you all for the phone calls, cards, food, prayers, and the love I feel from all. God is good all the time! –Jeannie Harrell

A big thank you to all of Bethany for your prayers, the wonderful cards and delicious food. I am doing very well. I have some energy back and the brain fog has left. Thank you again for your wonderful care. Bethany is a caring and serving church. Love to all of you, Dawn Cluts

Memorial Giving/Financial Secretary update: In our ministry of memorial giving, the financial secretary makes a list of givers so that the grieving family can acknowledge the gift. This has been delayed. We continue to try to fill the position of financial secretary. Thank you for your patience. We thank Bernard Robins for his many wonderful years of service: he is

officially "retired" 😉 ! In this in-between time, please direct any questions you have about memorial giving to Adel in the church office and she/I will route your question to someone who can help you. Again, thank you for your patience. - Pastor Mike

Note on Music for Lent

Our Lenten Voluntary this morning is one of Johann Sebastian Bach’s most profoundly

spiritual compositions, his magisterial setting of the Agnus Dei. Derived from John 1:29 and

added to the Catholic Mass in the 7th century for the rite of Holy Communion, the text consists

of three acclamations:

Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis.

Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis.

Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona nobis pacem.

(Lamb of God, who takes away the world’s sins, have mercy on us.

Lamb of God, who takes away the world’s sins, grant us peace.)

Bach’s setting of the Agnus Dei is based on the melody of the Protestant chorale (or hymn)

O Lamm Gottes, unschuldig (“O Lamb of God, Pure, Spotless,” 1542). Bach composed three

variations corresponding to three stanzas of the hymn. The third variation features some

powerfully graphic tone-painting. For example, to portray the verse “Our sins Thou did bear for

us,” Bach makes the printed notes outline the three crosses on Golgotha:

This type of symbolism, which cannot really be heard, is sometimes called “eye music”!

Quite evident to the ear, however, is the dissonant harmony Bach employs to create a mood of

intense anguish at the penultimate line, “Else hell had triumphed o’er us.”” But this painful

impression is quickly dissolved by a burst of musical sunlight at the last line, “Give us Thy peace

grant to us, O Jesus!” Here, as Dr. Albert Schweitzer remarks, “O Lamm Gottes concludes with

an ascending cadence as if the heavenly messengers — after bringing the prayed for peace —

were returning to their own kingdom.”

--Rudy Shackelford

Nominations and Leadership Development (NOM) Meets as needed. Identifies, nominates, develops, deploys, evaluates and monitors non-paid spiritual leadership for our ministries and committees. Care is given that all committees and ministries reflect inclusivity, diversity, and participation and representation of all generations. Retiring members of this committee are eligible to return after one year. Questions? Please call Pastor Mike, Judy Burner, or the chairperson of the committee.
