Te team has had to over-come a number o physicalchallenges, however.

In the last year, Landor brokea oot and had knee surgery.Despite the injuries, Landor

will be playing libero, a deen-sive specialist, at the tourna-ment because o her speed.Tomson broke a wrist playing

volleyball and was hospitalized

with pneumonia.Neither player has stoppedworking hard.

It gives them a wheel toget better and stay younger,

Carlsen said.Te team motto is: You dont

stop playing because you growold; you grow old because youstop playing.

For Carlsen, taking on a lead-ership role is nothing new.

While working as a physi-cal education teacher, shestarted the frst womens sportsprograms in the schools inunkhannock, Pa., where sheand her husband, Ray, wereliving.

When she sees somethingthat needs to be done, she goesahead and does it, said RayCarlsen, who also will be at theSenior Olympics, playing in themens 70-plus division this year.

Blaze Carlsen has had coach-ing help rom Carol Ward, whoplays on the Heat, a team inthe 50-55 age division that wongold at the last Senior Olym-pics. Ward said Lightning team

members are dedicated andenthusiastic.

Te team practices Mon-day and Wednesday morningsor two hours each and plays

Wednesday nights.For 65-year-old Mickey

Smith, the teams youngestplayer by a ew months, thatmeans she must make tworound-trips Wednesdays romher home in Chicago. For herthough, the Senior Olympics isold hat; this is her seventh sincebecoming eligible when sheturned 50.

For team member SylviaNolan, the teams departure orStanord University was spe-

cial in another way. She and herhusband were celebrating their55th anniversary.
